Complete crystal field calculation of Zeeman-hyperfine splittings in europium

Computational crystal-field models have provided consistent models of both electronic and Zeeman-hyperfine structure for several rare earth ions. These techniques have not yet been applied to the Zeeman-hyperfine structure of Eu$^{3+}$ because modeling the structure of the $J=0$ singlet levels in Eu$^{3+}$ requires inclusion of the commonly omitted lattice electric quadrupole and nuclear Zeeman interactions. Here, we include these terms in a computational model to fit the crystal field levels and the Zeeman-hyperfine structure of the $^7F_0$ and $^5D_0$ states in three Eu$^{3+}$ sites: the C$_{4v}$ and C$_{3v}$ sites in CaF$_2$ and the C$_2$ site in EuCl$_3$.6H$_2$O. Close fits are obtained for all three sites which are used to resolve ambiguities in previously published parameters, including quantifying the anomalously large crystal-field-induced state mixing in the C$_{3v}$ site and determining the signs of Zeeman-hyperfine parameters in all three sites. We show that this model allows accurate prediction of properties for Eu$^{3+}$ important for quantum information applications of these ions, such as relative transition strengths. The model could be used to improve crystal field calculations for other non-Kramers singlet states. We also present a spin Hamiltonian formalism without the normal assumption of no $J$ mixing, suitable for other rare earth ion energy levels where this effect is important.

Autler-Townes splitting in a three-dimensional transmon superconducting qubit

We have observed the Autler-Townes doublet in a superconducting Al/AlOx/Al transmon qubit that acts as an artificial atom embedded in a three-dimensional Cu microwave cavity at a temperature of 22 mK. Using pulsed microwave spectroscopy, the three lowest transmon levels are isolated, eliminating unwanted effects of higher qubit modes and cavity modes. The long coherence time (~40 us) of the transmon enables us to observe a clear Autler-Townes splitting at drive amplitudes much smaller than the transmon level anharmonicity (177 MHz). Three-level density matrix simulations with no free parameters provide excellent fits to the data. At maximum separation, the fidelity of a dark state achieved in this experiment is estimated to be 99.6-99.9%.

The Infrared Absorption Band and Vibronic Structure of the Nitrogen-Vacancy Center in Diamond

Negatively-charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV$^-$) color centers in diamond have generated much interest for use in quantum technology. Despite the progress made in developing their applications, many questions about the basic properties of NV$^-$ centers remain unresolved. Understanding these properties can validate theoretical models of NV$^-$, improve their use in applications, and support their development into competitive quantum devices. In particular, knowledge of the phonon modes of the $^1A_1$ electronic state is key for understanding the optical pumping process. Using pump-probe spectroscopy, we measured the phonon sideband of the ${^1}E\rightarrow{^1}A_1$ electronic transition in the NV$^-$ center. From this we calculated the ${^1}E\rightarrow{^1}A_1$ one-phonon absorption spectrum and found it to differ from that of the ${^3}E\rightarrow{^3}A_2$ transition, a result which is not anticipated by previous group-theoretical models of the NV$^-$ electronic states. We identified a high-energy 169 meV localized phonon mode of the $^1A_1$ level.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in an isotopically purified Nd$^{3+}$:YLiF$_4$ crystal

We report the first observation of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an isotopically purified Nd$^{3+}$:YLiF$_4$ crystal. This crystal demonstrates inhomogeneous broadening of optical transitions of about 35 MHz. EIT is observed in a symmetrical $Λ$-like system formed by two hyperfine sublevels of the ground state corresponding to a zero first order Zeeman (ZEFOZ) transition and a hyperfine sublevel of the excited state, which is not coupled to other ground-state sublevels. It is found that transmission of the probe field as a function of the two-photon detuning demonstrates a comb-like structure that can be attributed to superhyperfine coupling between Nd$^{3+}$ ions and fluorine nuclei. The observed structure can be resolved only in the vicinity of the ZEFOZ point where the homogeneous linewidth of the spin transition is sufficiently small. The results pave the way for implementing solid-state quantum memories based on off-resonant Raman interaction without spectral tailoring of optical transitions.

Characterization of ${}^{171}Yb^{3+}\!:\! YVO_4$ for photonic quantum technologies

Rare-earth ions in crystals are a proven solid-state platform for quantum technologies in the ensemble regime and attractive for new opportunities at the single ion level. Among the trivalent rare earths, ${}^{171}\mathrm{Yb}^{3+}$ is unique in that it possesses a single 4f excited-state manifold and is the only paramagnetic isotope with a nuclear spin of 1/2. In this work, we present measurements of the optical and spin properties of $^{171}$Yb$^{3+}$:YVO$_4$ to assess whether this distinct energy level structure can be harnessed for quantum interfaces. The material was found to possess large optical absorption compared to other rare-earth-doped crystals owing to the combination of narrow inhomogeneous broadening and a large transition oscillator strength. In moderate magnetic fields, we measure optical linewidths less than 3 kHz and nuclear spin linewidths less than 50 Hz. We characterize the excited-state hyperfine and Zeeman interactions in this system, which enables the engineering of a $Λ$-system and demonstration of all-optical coherent control over the nuclear spin ensemble. Given these properties, $^{171}$Yb$^{3+}$:YVO$_4$ has significant potential for building quantum interfaces such as ensemble-based memories, microwave-to-optical transducers, and optically addressable single rare-earth-ion spin qubits.

Anyonic statistics of quantum impurities in two dimensions

We demonstrate that identical impurities immersed in a two-dimensional many-particle bath can be viewed as flux-tube-charged-particle composites described by fractional statistics. In particular, we find that the bath manifests itself as an external magnetic flux tube with respect to the impurities, and hence the time-reversal symmetry is broken for the effective Hamiltonian describing the impurities. The emerging flux tube acts as a statistical gauge field after a certain critical coupling. This critical coupling corresponds to the intersection point between the quasiparticle state and the phonon wing, where the angular momentum is transferred from the impurity to the bath. This amounts to a novel configuration with emerging anyons. The proposed setup paves the way to realizing anyons using electrons interacting with superfluid helium or lattice phonons, as well as using atomic impurities in ultracold gases.

Quantum interference effects in an ensemble of $^{229}$Th nuclei interacting with coherent light

As a unique feature, the $^{229}$Th nucleus has an isomeric transition in the vacuum ultraviolet that can be accessed by optical lasers. The interference effects occurring in the interaction between coherent optical light and an ensemble of $^{229}$Th nuclei are investigated theoretically. We consider the scenario of nuclei doped in vacuum ultraviolet-vacuum ultraviolet transparent crystals and take into account the effect of different doping sites and therefore different lattice fields that broaden the nuclear transition width. This effect is shown to come in interplay with interference effects due to the hyperfine splitting of the ground and isomeric nuclear states. We investigate possible experimentally available situations involving two-, three- and four-level schemes of quadrupole sublevels of the ground and isomeric nuclear states coupling to one or two coherent fields. Specific configurations which offer clear signatures of the isomer excitation advantageous for the more precise experimental determination of the transition energy are identified. Furthermore, it is shown that population trapping into the isomeric state can be achieved. This paves the way for further nuclear quantum optics applications with $^{229}$Th such as nuclear coherent control.

An efficient method for evaluating energy-dependent sum rules

Energy-dependent sum rules are useful tools in many fields of physics. In nuclear physics, they typically involve an integration of the response function over the nuclear spectrum with a weight function composed of integer powers of the energy. More complicated weight functions are also encountered, e.g., in nuclear polarization corrections of atomic spectra. Using the Lorentz integral transform method and the Lanczos algorithm, we derive a computationally efficient technique for evaluating such sum rules that avoids the explicit calculation of both the continuum states and the response function itself. Our numerical results for electric dipole sum rules of the Helium-4 nucleus with various energy-dependent weights show rapid convergence with respect to the number of Lanczos steps. This demonstrates the usefulness of the method in a variety of electroweak reactions.

Neutrino Velocity and the Variability of Fundamental Constants

Neutrino speed experiments could be viewed not only as tests of Lorentz invariance but also as measurements of limiting propagation speed for all standard model species below certain depth where no direct metrological information is available. The latter option, hypothetically caused by some chameleon-type background, could be tested in the next installment of the neutrino speed experiments. We also show that that complementary constraints on the same class of models can be obtained with experiments testing clock universality in deep underground/underwater experiments. By considering the explicit QED model with particle-universal modification of propagation speed by a depth-dependent tensor background, we show that in general one should expect larger-than-GR shifts of the clock frequencies and clock non-universality. This can be tested by comparison of the narrow transitions in atomic clocks, which for a generic model could deliver a superior accuracy compared to the neutrino speed experiments.

Light-by-Light Scattering Single-Logarithmic Corrections to Hyperfine Splitting in Muonium

We consider three-loop radiative-recoil corrections to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by the gauge invariant set of diagrams with virtual light-by-light scattering block. These corrections are enhanced by the large logarithms of the electron-muon mass ratio. We present the results of an analytic calculation of the single-logarithmic radiative-recoil corrections of order $α^2(Zα)(m/M)E_F$ to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by these diagrams.

Light-by-Light Scattering Nonlogarithmic Corrections to Hyperfine Splitting in Muonium

We consider three-loop corrections to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by the gauge invariant set of diagrams with virtual light-by-light scattering block. These diagrams produce both recoil and nonrecoil contributions to hyperfine splitting. Recoil corrections are enhanced by large logarithms of the muon-electron mass ratio. Both nonrecoil and logarithmically enhanced radiative-recoil corrections where calculated some time ago. Here we calculate nonlogarithmic radiative-recoil corrections generated by the insertions of the light-by-light scattering block.

Gravitationally enhanced depolarization of ultracold neutrons in magnetic field gradients, and implications for neutron electric dipole moment measurements

Trapped ultracold neutrons (UCN) have for many years been the mainstay of experiments to search for the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron, a critical parameter in constraining scenarios of new physics beyond the Standard Model. Because their energies are so low, UCN preferentially populate the lower region of their physical enclosure, and do not sample uniformly the ambient magnetic field throughout the storage volume. This leads to a substantial increase in the rate of depolarization, as well as to shifts in the measured frequency of the stored neutrons. Consequences for EDM measurements are discussed.

COW test of the weak equivalence principle: A low-energy window to look into the noncommutative structure of space-time?

We construct the quantum mechanical model of the COW experiment assuming that the underlying space time has a granular structure, described by a canonical noncommutative algebra of coordinates $x^μ$. The time-space sector of the algebra is shown to add a mass-dependent contribution to the gravitational acceleration felt by neutron deBrogli waves measured in a COW experiment. This makes time-space noncommutativity a potential candidate for an apparent violation of WEP even if the ratio of the inertial mass $m_{i}$ and gravitational mass $m_{g}$ is a universal constant. The latest experimental result based on COW principle is shown to place an upper-bound several orders of magnitude stronger than the existing one on the time-space noncommutative parameter. We argue that the evidence of NC structure of space-time may be found if the COW-type experiment can be repeated with several particle species.

Scattering properties of dark atoms and molecules

There has been renewed interest in the possibility that dark matter exists in the form of atoms, analogous to those of the visible world. An important input for understanding the cosmological consequences of dark atoms is their self-scattering. Making use of results from atomic physics for the potentials between hydrogen atoms, we compute the low-energy elastic scattering cross sections for dark atoms. We find an intricate dependence upon the ratio of the dark proton to electron mass, allowing for the possibility to "design" low-energy features in the cross section. Dependences upon other parameters, namely the gauge coupling and reduced mass, scale out of the problem by using atomic units. We derive constraints on the parameter space of dark atoms by demanding that their scattering cross section does not exceed bounds from dark matter halo shapes. We discuss the formation of molecular dark hydrogen in the universe, and determine the analogous constraints on the model when the dark matter is predominantly in molecular form.

CKM benchmarks for electron EDM experiments

All current experiments searching for an electron EDM d_e are performed with atoms and diatomic molecules. Motivated by significant recent progress in searches for an EDM-type signal in diatomic molecules with an uncompensated electron spin, we provide an estimate for the expected signal in the Standard Model due to the CKM phase. We find that the main contribution originates from the effective electron-nucleon operator $\bar{e} iγ_5 e \bar{N}N$, induced by a combination of weak and electromagnetic interactions at $O(G_F^2α^2)$, and not by the CKM-induced electron EDM itself. When the resulting atomic P,T-odd mixing is interpreted as an {\it equivalent} electron EDM, this estimate leads to the benchmark $d_e^{equiv}(CKM) \sim 10^{-38}$ ecm.

Constraints on long-range spin-gravity and monopole-dipole couplings of the proton

Results of a search for a long-range monopole-dipole coupling between the mass of the Earth and rubidium (Rb) nuclear spins are reported. The experiment simultaneously measures the spin precession frequencies of overlapping ensembles of $^{85}$Rb and $^{87}$Rb atoms contained within an evacuated, antirelaxation-coated vapor cell. The nuclear structure of the Rb isotopes makes the experiment particularly sensitive to spin-dependent interactions of the proton. The spin-dependent component of the gravitational energy of the proton in the Earth's field is found to be smaller than $3 \times 10^{-18}~{\rm eV}$, improving laboratory constraints on long-range monopole-dipole interactions by over three orders of magnitude.

Electron dynamics controlled via self-interaction

The dynamics of an electron in a strong laser field can be significantly altered by radiation reaction. This usually results in a strongly damped motion, with the electron losing a large fraction of its initial energy. Here we show that the electron dynamics in a bichromatic laser pulse can be indirectly controlled by a comparatively small radiation reaction force through its interplay with the Lorentz force. By changing the relative phase between the two frequency components of the bichromatic laser field, an ultrarelativistic electron bunch colliding head-on with the laser pulse can be deflected in a controlled way, with the deflection angle being independent of the initial electron energy. The effect is predicted to be observable with laser powers and intensities close to those of current state-of-the-art petawatt laser systems.

Accurate solution of the Dirac equation on Lagrange meshes

The Lagrange-mesh method is an approximate variational method taking the form of equations on a grid because of the use of a Gauss quadrature approximation. With a basis of Lagrange functions involving associated Laguerre polynomials related to the Gauss quadrature, the method is applied to the Dirac equation. The potential may possess a $1/r$ singularity. For hydrogenic atoms, numerically exact energies and wave functions are obtained with small numbers $n+1$ of mesh points, where $n$ is the principal quantum number. Numerically exact mean values of powers $-2$ to 3 of the radial coordinate $r$ can also be obtained with $n+2$ mesh points. For the Yukawa potential, a 15-digit agreement with benchmark energies of the literature is obtained with 50 mesh points or less.
