Finite-Dimensional Representations of the Quantum Superalgebra U$_{q}$[gl(2/2)]: II. Nontypical representations at generic $q$

The construction approach proposed in the previous paper Ref. 1 allows us there and in the present paper to construct at generic deformation parameter $q$ all finite--dimensional representations of the quantum Lie superalgebra $U_{q}[gl(2/2)]$. The finite--dimensional $U_{q}[gl(2/2)]$-modules $W^{q}$ constructed in Ref. 1 are either irreducible or indecomposible. If a module $W^{q}$ is indecomposible, i.e. when the condition (4.41) in Ref. 1 does not hold, there exists an invariant maximal submodule of $W^{q}$, to say $I_{k}^{q}$, such that the factor-representation in the factor-module $W^{q}/I_{k}^{q}$ is irreducible and called nontypical. Here, in this paper, indecomposible representations and nontypical finite--dimensional representations of the quantum Lie superalgebra $U_{q}[gl(2/2)]$ are considered and classified as their module structures are analized and the matrix elements of all nontypical representations are written down explicitly.

Higher-dimensional Algebra and Topological Quantum Field Theory

The study of topological quantum field theories increasingly relies upon concepts from higher-dimensional algebra such as n-categories and n-vector spaces. We review progress towards a definition of n-category suited for this purpose, and outline a program in which n-dimensional TQFTs are to be described as n-category representations. First we describe a "suspension" operation on n-categories, and hypothesize that the k-fold suspension of a weak n-category stabilizes for k >= n+2. We give evidence for this hypothesis and describe its relation to stable homotopy theory. We then propose a description of n-dimensional unitary extended TQFTs as weak n-functors from the "free stable weak n-category with duals on one object" to the n-category of "n-Hilbert spaces". We conclude by describing n-categorical generalizations of deformation quantization and the quantum double construction.

Topological BF Theories in 3 and 4 Dimensions

In this paper we discuss topological BF theories in 3 and 4 dimensions. Observables are associated to ordinary knots and links (in 3 dimensions) and to 2-knots (in 4 dimensions). The vacuum expectation values of such observables give a wide range of invariants. Here we consider mainly the 3-dimensional case, where these invariants include Alexander polynomials, HOMFLY polynomials and Kontsevich integrals.

Classical and Quantum sl(1|2) Superalgebras, Casimir Operators and Quantum Chain Hamiltonians

We examine the two parameter deformed superalgebra $U_{qs}(sl(1|2))$ and use the results in the construction of quantum chain Hamiltonians. This study is done both in the framework of the Serre presentation and in the $R$-matrix scheme of Faddeev, Reshetikhin and Takhtajan (FRT). We show that there exists an infinite number of Casimir operators, indexed by integers $p > 1$ in the undeformed case and by $p \in Z$ in the deformed case, which obey quadratic relations. The construction of the dual superalgebra of functions on $SL_{qs}(1|2)$ is also given and higher tensor product representations are discussed. Finally, we construct quantum chain Hamiltonians based on the Casimir operators. In the deformed case we find two Hamiltonians which describe deformed $t-J$ models.

Lorentz Transformations as Lie-Poisson Symmetries

We write down the Poisson structure for a relativistic particle where the Lorentz group does not act canonically, but instead as a Poisson-Lie group. In so doing we obtain the classical limit of a particle moving on a noncommutative space possessing $SL_q(2,C)$ invariance. We show that if the standard mass shell constraint is chosen for the Hamiltonian function, then the particle interacts with the space-time. We solve for the trajectory and find that it originates and terminates at singularities.

Path Integration in Two-Dimensional Toplogical Quantum Field Theory

A positive, diffeomorphism-invariant generalized measure on the space of metrics of a two-dimensional smooth manifold is constructed. We use the term generalized measure analogously with the generalized measures of Ashtekar and Lewandowski and of Baez. A family of actions is presented which, when integrated against this measure, give the two-dimensional axiomatic topological quantum field theories, or TQFT's, in terms of which Durhuus and Jonsson decompose every two-dimensional unitary TQFT as a direct sum.

Type-I Quantum Superalgebras, $q$-Supertrace and Two-variable Link Polynomials

A new general eigenvalue formula for the eigenvalues of Casimir invariants, for the type-I quantum superalgebras, is applied to the construction of link polynomials associated with {\em any} finite dimensional unitary irrep for these algebras. This affords a systematic construction of new two-variable link polynomials asociated with any finite dimensional irrep (with a real highest weight) for the type-I quantum superalgebras. In particular infinite families of non-equivalent two-variable link polynomials are determined in fully explicit form.

Recursively minimally-deformed oscillators

A recursive deformation of the boson commutation relation is introduced. Each step consists of a minimal deformation of a commutator $[a,\ad]=f_k(\cdots;\no)$ into $[a,\ad]_{q_{k+1}}=f_k(\cdots;\no)$, where $\cdots$ stands for the set of deformation parameters that $f_k$ depends on, followed by a transformation into the commutator $[a,\ad]=f_{k+1}(\cdots,\, q_{k+1};\no)$ to which the deformed commutator is equivalent within the Fock space. Starting from the harmonic oscillator commutation relation $[a,\ad]=1$ we obtain the Arik-Coon and the Macfarlane-Biedenharn oscillators at the first and second steps, respectively, followed by a sequence of multiparameter generalizations. Several other types of deformed commutation relations related to the treatment of integrable models and to parastatistics are also obtained. The ``generic'' form consists of a linear combination of exponentials of the number operator, and the various recursive families can be classified according to the number of free linear parameters involved, that depends on the form of the initial commutator.

Lie-Poisson Deformation of the Poincaré Algebra

We find a one parameter family of quadratic Poisson structures on ${\bf R}^4\times SL(2,C)$ which satisfies the property {\it a)} that it is preserved under the Lie-Poisson action of the Lorentz group, as well as {\it b)} that it reduces to the standard Poincaré algebra for a particular limiting value of the parameter. (The Lie-Poisson transformations reduce to canonical ones in that limit, which we therefore refer to as the `canonical limit'.) Like with the Poincaré algebra, our deformed Poincaré algebra has two Casimir functions which we associate with `mass' and `spin'. We parametrize the symplectic leaves of ${\bf R}^4\times SL(2,C)$ with space-time coordinates, momenta and spin, thereby obtaining realizations of the deformed algebra for the cases of a spinless and a spinning particle. The formalism can be applied for finding a one parameter family of canonically inequivalent descriptions of the photon.

Maximal Localisation in the Presence of Minimal Uncertainties in Positions and Momenta

Small corrections to the uncertainty relations, with effects in the ultraviolet and/or infrared, have been discussed in the context of string theory and quantum gravity. Such corrections lead to small but finite minimal uncertainties in position and/or momentum measurements. It has been shown that these effects could indeed provide natural cutoffs in quantum field theory. The corresponding underlying quantum theoretical framework includes small `noncommutative geometric' corrections to the canonical commutation relations. In order to study the full implications on the concept of locality it is crucial to find the physical states of then maximal localisation. These states and their properties have been calculated for the case with minimal uncertainties in positions only. Here we extend this treatment, though still in one dimension, to the general situation with minimal uncertainties both in positions and in momenta.

The $W_{1+\infty}(gl_s)$--symmetries of the $S$--component KP hierarchy

Adler, Shiota and van Moerbeke obtained for the KP and Toda lattice hierarchies a formula which translates the action of the vertex operator on tau--functions to an action of a vertex operator of pseudo-differential operators on wave functions. This relates the additional symmetries of the KP and Toda lattice hierarchyto the $W_{1+\infty}$--, respectively $W_{1+\infty}\times W_{1+\infty}$--algebra symmeties. In this paper we generalize the results to the $s$--component KP hierarchy. The vertex operators generate the algebra $W_{1+\infty}(gl_s)$, the matrix version of $W_{1+\infty}$. Since the Toda lattice hierarchy is equivalent to the $2$--component KP hierarchy, the results of this paper uncover in that particular case a much richer structure than the one obtained by Adler, Shiota and van Moerbeke.

A Quantum Analogue of the ${\cal Z}$ Algebra

We define a natural quantum analogue for the ${\cal Z}$ algebra, and which we refer to as the ${\cal Z}_q$ algebra, by modding out the Heisenberg algebra from the quantum affine algebra $U_q(\hat{sl(2)})$ with level $k$. We discuss the representation theory of this ${\cal Z}_q$ algebra. In particular, we exhibit its reduction to a group algebra, and to a tensor product of a group algebra with a quantum Clifford algebra when $k=1$, and $k=2$, and thus, we recover the explicit constructions of $\uq$-standard modules as achieved by Frenkel-Jing and Bernard, respectively. Moreover, for arbitrary nonzero level $k$, we show that the explicit basis for the simplest ${\cal Z}$-generalized Verma module as constructed by Lepowsky and primc is also a basis for its corresponding ${\cal Z}_q$-module, i.e., it is invariant under the q-deformation for generic q. We expect this ${\cal Z}_q$ algebra (associated with $\uq$ at level $k$), to play the role of a dynamical symmetry in the off-critical $ Z_k$ statistical models.

Cabled Wilson Loops in BF Theories

A generating function for cabled Wilson loops in three-dimensional BF theories is defined, and a careful study of its behavior for vanishing cosmological constant is performed. This allows an exhaustive description of the unframed knot invariants coming from the pure BF theory based on SU(2), and in particular, it proves a conjecture relating them to the Alexander-Conway polynomial.

On Curvature in Noncommutative Geometry

A general definition of a bimodule connection in noncommutative geometry has been recently proposed. For a given algebra this definition is compared with the ordinary definition of a connection on a left module over the associated enveloping algebra. The corresponding curvatures are also compared.

Irreducible tensor operators in the regular coaction formalisms of compact quantum group algebras

The defining conditions for the irreducible tensor operators associated with the unitary irreducible corepresentions of compact quantum group algebras are deduced first in both the right and left regular coaction formalisms. In each case it is shown that there are {\em{two}} types of irreducible tensor operator, which may be called `ordinary' and `twisted'. The consistency of the definitions is demonstrated, and various consequences are deduced, including generalizations of the Wigner-Eckart theorem for both the ordinary and twisted operators. Also included are discussions (within the regular coaction formalisms for compact quantum group algebras) of inner-products, basis functions, projection operators, Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, and two types of tensor product of corepresentations. The formulation of quantum homogeneous spaces for compact quantum group algebras is discussed, and the defining conditions for the irreducible tensor operators associated with such quan! tum homogeneous spaces and with the unitary irreducible corepresentions of the compact quantum group algebras are then deduced. There are two versions, which correspond to restrictions of the right and left regular coactions. In each case it is again shown that there are ordinary and twisted irreducible tensor operators. Various consequences are deduced, including the corresponding generalizations of the Wigner-Eckart theorem.

Integration on quantum Euclidean space and sphere in $N$ dimensions

Invariant integrals of functions and forms over $q$ - deformed Euclidean space and spheres in $N$ dimensions are defined and shown to be positive definite, compatible with the star - structure and to satisfy a cyclic property involving the $D$ - matrix of $SO_q(N)$. The definition is more general than the Gaussian integral known so far. Stokes theorem is proved with and without spherical boundary terms, as well as on the sphere.

Braided Geometry of the Conformal Algebra

We show that the action of the special conformal transformations of the usual (undeformed) conformal group is the $q\to 1$ scaling limit of the braided adjoint action or $R$-commutator of $q$-Minkowski space on itself. We also describe the $q$-deformed conformal algebra in $R$-matrix form and its quasi-$*$ structure.
