Canonical transformations of the time for the Toda lattice and the Holt system

For the Toda lattice and the Holt system we consider properties of canonical transformations of the extended phase space, which preserve integrability. The separated variables are invariant under change of the time. On the other hand, mapping of the time induces transformations of the action-angles variables and a shift of the generating function of the Bäcklund transformation.

Bi-differential calculi and integrable models

The existence of an infinite set of conserved currents in completely integrable classical models, including chiral and Toda models as well as the KP and self-dual Yang-Mills equations, is traced back to a simple construction of an infinite chain of closed (respectively, covariantly constant) 1-forms in a (gauged) bi-differential calculus. The latter consists of a differential algebra on which two differential maps act. In a gauged bi-differential calculus these maps are extended to flat covariant derivatives.

The complex Toda chains and the simple Lie algebras - solutions and large time asymptotics -- II

We propose a compact and explicit expression for the solutions of the complex Toda chains related to the classical series of simple Lie algebras g. The solutions are parametrized by a minimal set of scattering data for the corresponding Lax matrix. They are expressed as sums over the weight systems of the fundamental representations of g and are explicitly covariant under the corresponding Weyl group action. In deriving these results we start from the Moser formula for the A_r series and obtain the results for the other classical series of Lie algebras by imposing appropriate involutions on the scattering data. Thus we also show how Moser's solution goes into the one of Olshanetsky and Perelomov. The results for the large-time asymptotics of the A_r -CTC solutions are extended to the other classical series B_r - D_r. We exhibit also some `irregular' solutions for the D_{2n+1} algebras whose asymptotic regimes at t ->\pm\infty are qualitatively different. Interesting examples of bounded and periodic solutions are presented and the relations between the solutions for the algebras D_4, B_3 and G_2 $ are analyzed.

Solution of the quantum inverse problem

We derive a formula that expresses the local spin and field operators of fundamental graded models in terms of the elements of the monodromy matrix. This formula is a quantum analogue of the classical inverse scattering transform. It applies to fundamental spin chains, such as the XYZ chain, and to a number of important exactly solvable models of strongly correlated electrons, such as the supersymmetric t-J model or the the EKS model.

phi^4 Kinks - Gradient Flow and Dynamics

The symmetric dynamics of two kinks and one antikink in classical (1+1)-dimensional $ϕ^4$ theory is investigated. Gradient flow is used to construct a collective coordinate model of the system. The relationship between the discrete vibrational mode of a single kink, and the process of kink-antikink pair production is explored.

The Radius of Convergence and the Well-Posedness of the Painlevé Expansions of the Korteweg-deVries equation

In this paper we obtain explicit lower bounds for the radius of convergence of the Painlevé expansions of the Korteweg-de-Vries equation around a movable singularity manifold ${\Cal S}$ in terms of the sup norms of the arbitrary functions involved. We use this estimate to prove the well-posedness of the singular Cauchy problem on ${\Cal S}$ in the form of continuous dependence of the meromorphic solution on the arbitrary data.

Mappings preserving locations of movable poles: a new extension of the truncation method to ordinary differential equations

The truncation method is a collective name for techniques that arise from truncating a Laurent series expansion (with leading term) of generic solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). Despite its utility in finding Backlund transformations and other remarkable properties of integrable PDEs, it has not been generally extended to ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Here we give a new general method that provides such an extension and show how to apply it to the classical nonlinear ODEs called the Painleve equations. Our main new idea is to consider mappings that preserve the locations of a natural subset of the movable poles admitted by the equation. In this way we are able to recover all known fundamental Backlund transformations for the equations considered. We are also able to derive Backlund transformations onto other ODEs in the Painleve classification.

Hypercomplex Integrable Systems

In this paper we study hypercomplex manifolds in four dimensions. Rather than using an approach based on differential forms, we develop a dual approach using vector fields. The condition on these vector fields may then be interpreted as Lax equations, exhibiting the integrability properties of such manifolds. A number of different field equations for such hypercomplex manifolds are derived, one of which is in Cauchy-Kovaleskaya form which enables a formal general solution to be given. Various other properties of the field equations and their solutions are studied, such as their symmetry properties and the associated hierarchy of conservation laws.

On a Shallow Water Wave Equation

In this paper we study a shallow water equation derivable using the Boussinesq approximation, which includes as two special cases, one equation discussed by Ablowitz et. al. [Stud. Appl. Math., 53 (1974) 249--315] and one by Hirota and Satsuma [J. Phys. Soc. Japan}, 40 (1976) 611--612]. A catalogue of classical and nonclassical symmetry reductions, and a Painleve analysis, are given. Of particular interest are families of solutions found containing a rich variety of qualitative behaviours. Indeed we exhibit and plot a wide variety of solutions all of which look like a two-soliton for t>0 but differ radically for t<0. These families arise as nonclassical symmetry reduction solutions and solutions found using the singular manifold method. This example shows that nonclassical symmetries and the singular manifold method do not, in general, yield the same solution set. We also obtain symmetry reductions of the shallow water equation solvable in terms of solutions of the first, third and fifth Painleve equations. We give evidence that the variety of solutions found which exhibit ``nonlinear superposition'' is not an artefact of the equation being linearisable since the equation is solvable by inverse scattering. These solutions have important implications with regard to the numerical analysis for the shallow water equation we study, which would not be able to distinguish the solutions in an initial value problem since an exponentially small change in the initial conditions can result in completely different qualitative behaviours.

Integrable open boundary conditions for XXC models

The XXC models are multistate generalizations of the well known spin 1/2 XXZ model. These integrable models share a common underlying su(2) structure. We derive integrable open boundary conditions for the hierarchy of conserved quantities of the XXC models . Due to lack of crossing unitarity of the R-matrix, we develop specific methods to prove integrability. The symmetry of the spectrum is determined.

Algebro-Geometric Quasi-Periodic Finite-Gap Solutions of the Toda and Kac-van Moerbeke Hierarchies

Combining algebro-geometric methods and factorization techniques for finite difference expressions we provide a complete and self-contained treatment of all real-valued quasi-periodic finite-gap solutions of both the Toda and Kac-van Moerbeke hierarchies. In order to obtain our principal new result, the algebro-geometric finite-gap solutions of the Kac-van Moerbeke hierarchy, we employ particular commutation methods in connection with Miura-type transformations which enable us to transfer whole classes of solutions (such as finite-gap solutions) from the Toda hierarchy to its modified counterpart, the Kac-van Moerbeke hierarchy, and vice versa.

Modified Korteweg-de Vries Hierachies in Multiple-Times Variables and the Solutions of Modified Boussinesq Equations

We study solitary-wave and kink-wave solutions of a modified Boussinesq equation through a multiple-time reductive perturbation method. We use appropriated modified Korteweg-de Vries hierarchies to eliminate secular producing terms in each order of the perturbative scheme. We show that the multiple-time variables needed to obtain a regular perturbative series are completely determined by the associated linear theory in the case of a solitary-wave solution, but requires the knowledge of each order of the perturbative series in the case of a kink-wave solution. These appropriate multiple-time variables allow us to show that the solitary-wave as well as the kink-wave solutions of the modified Botussinesq equation are actually respectively a solitary-wave and a kink-wave satisfying all the equations of suitable modified Korteweg-de Vries hierarchies.

Universal Superpositions of Coherent States and Self-Similar Potentials

A variety of coherent states of the harmonic oscillator is considered. It is formed by a particular superposition of canonical coherent states. In the simplest case, these superpositions are eigenfunctions of the annihilation operator $A=P(d/dx+x)/\sqrt2$, where $P$ is the parity operator. Such $A$ arises naturally in the $q\to -1$ limit for a symmetry operator of a specific self-similar potential obeying the $q$-Weyl algebra, $AA^\dagger-q^2A^\dagger A=1$. Coherent states for this and other reflectionless potentials whose discrete spectra consist of $N$ geometric series are analyzed. In the harmonic oscillator limit the surviving part of these states takes the form of orthonormal superpositions of $N$ canonical coherent states $|ε^kα\rangle$, $k=0, 1, \dots, N-1$, where $ε$ is a primitive $N$th root of unity, $ε^N=1$. A class of $q$-coherent states related to the bilateral $q$-hypergeometric series and Ramanujan type integrals is described. It includes a curious set of coherent states of the free nonrelativistic particle which is interpreted as a $q$-algebraic system without discrete spectrum. A special degenerate form of the symmetry algebras of self-similar potentials is found to provide a natural $q$-analog of the Floquet theory. Some properties of the factorization method, which is used throughout the paper, are discussed from the differential Galois theory point of view.

Matched Pulse Propagation in a Three-Level System

The Bäcklund transformation for the three-level Maxwell-Bloch equation is presented in the matrix potential formalism. By applying the Bäcklund transformation to a constant electric field background, we obtain a general solution for matched pulses (a pair of solitary waves) which can emit or absorb a light velocity solitary pulse but otherwise propagate with their shapes invariant. In the special case, this solution describes a steady state pulse without emission or absorption, and becomes the matched pulse solution recently obtained by Hioe and Grobe. A nonlinear superposition rule is derived from the Bäcklund transformation and used for the explicit construction of two solitons as well as nonabelian breathers. Various new features of these solutions are addressed. In particular, we analyze in detail the scattering of "invertons", a specific pair of different wavelength solitons one of which moving with the velocity of light. Unlike the usual case of soliton scattering, the broader inverton changes its sign through the scattering. Surprisingly, the light velocity inverton receives time advance through the scattering thereby moving faster than light, which however does not violate causality.

Transport and conservation laws

We study the lowest order conservation laws in one-dimensional (1D) integrable quantum many-body models (IQM) as the Heisenberg spin 1/2 chain, the Hubbard and t-J model. We show that the energy current is closely related to the first conservation law in these models and therefore the thermal transport coefficients are anomalous. Using an inequality on the time decay of current correlations we show how the existence of conserved quantities implies a finite charge stiffness (weight of the zero frequency component of the conductivity) and so ideal conductivity at finite temperatures.

Integrabilities of the long range t-J model of twisted boundary condition

The integrability of the one-dimensional long range supersymmetric t-J model has previously been established for both open systems and those closed by periodic boundary conditions through explicit construction of its integrals of motion. Recently the system has been extended to include the effect of magnetic flux, which gives rise to a closed chain with twisted boundary conditions. While the t-J model with twisted boundary conditions has been solved for the ground state and full energy spectrum, proof of its integrability has so far been lacking. In this letter we extend the proof of integrability of the long range supersymmetric t-J model and its SU(m|n) generalization to include the case of twisted boundary conditions.

Shock waves in one-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnets

We use SU(2) coherent state path integral formulation with the stationary phase approximation to investigate, both analytically and numerically, the existence of shock waves in the one- dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnets with anisotropic exchange interaction. As a result we show the existence of shock waves of two types,"bright" and "dark", which can be interpreted as moving magnetic domains.
