A general learning algorithm for solving optimization problems and its application to the spin glass problem

We propose a general learning algorithm for solving optimization problems, based on a simple strategy of trial and adaptation. The algorithm maintains a probability distribution of possible solutions (configurations), which is updated continuously in the learning process. As the probability distribution evolves, better and better solutions are shown to emerge. The performance of the algorithm is illustrated by the application to the problem of finding the ground state of the Ising spin glass. A simple theoretical understanding of the algorithm is also presented.

A solvable model of the evolutionary loop

A model for the evolution of a finite population in a rugged fitness landscape is introduced and solved. The population is trapped in an evolutionary loop, alternating periods of stasis to periods in which it performs adaptive walks. The dependence of the average rarity of the population (a quantity related to the fitness of the most adapted individual) and of the duration of stases on population size and mutation rate is calculated.

Entropy and typical properties of Nash equilibria in two-player games

We use techniques from the statistical mechanics of disordered systems to analyse the properties of Nash equilibria of bimatrix games with large random payoff matrices. By means of an annealed bound, we calculate their number and analyse the properties of typical Nash equilibria, which are exponentially dominant in number. We find that a randomly chosen equilibrium realizes almost always equal payoffs to either player. This value and the fraction of strategies played at an equilibrium point are calculated as a function of the correlation between the two payoff matrices. The picture is complemented by the calculation of the properties of Nash equilibria in pure strategies.

Evolution dynamics in terraced NK landscapes

We study populations of agents evolving in fitness landscapes constructed according to the rules of a modified NK model with a tunable amount of neutral paths. In the `punctuated equilibrium' regime evolutionary events are identified as jumps in the mean population fitness, and the statistics of these jumps in an ensemble of independently evolving populations is analyzed. We show that, for a wide range of landscapes parameters, the number of events in time t is Poisson distributed, with the time parameter replaced by the logarithm of time. This simple log-Poisson statistics likewise describes the number n of records in any sequence of t independently generated random numbers. The implications of this behavior for evolution dynamics are discussed.

Collective Intelligence for Control of Distributed Dynamical Systems

We consider the El Farol bar problem, also known as the minority game (W. B. Arthur, ``The American Economic Review'', 84(2): 406--411 (1994), D. Challet and Y.C. Zhang, ``Physica A'', 256:514 (1998)). We view it as an instance of the general problem of how to configure the nodal elements of a distributed dynamical system so that they do not ``work at cross purposes'', in that their collective dynamics avoids frustration and thereby achieves a provided global goal. We summarize a mathematical theory for such configuration applicable when (as in the bar problem) the global goal can be expressed as minimizing a global energy function and the nodes can be expressed as minimizers of local free energy functions. We show that a system designed with that theory performs nearly optimally for the bar problem.

A self-similar model for shear flows in dense granular materials

We propose a model to describe the quasistatic shearing of dry granular materials, which notably captures the differences in velocity profiles recently observed in 2 and 3-D Couette flow experiments. In our scheme, the steady-state flow is due to the intermittent motion of particle clusters moving together with the wall. The motion of a cluster is associated with the transient formation of a fracture inside the sheared pack. The model is based on the existence of a persistence length for the fractures, which imposes a self-similar structure on the clusters. Through a probabilistic approach, we can evaluate the rate of appearance of a cluster of a given size and obtain a prediction for the average velocity profiles. We also predict the existence of large stress fluctuations at the moving wall, which characteristics are in good agreement with experimental data.

Spatial holeburning effects in the amplified spontaneous emission spectra of the non-lasing supermode in semiconductor laser arrays

The amplified spontaneous emission spectrum of the light field in the non-lasing supermode of two coupled semiconductor lasers is analyzed using linearized Langevin equations. It is shown that the interference betweeen the laser mode and the fluctuating light field in the non-lasing mode causes spatial holeburning. This effect introduces a phase sensitive coupling between the laser field and the fluctuations in the non-lasing mode. For high laser fields, this coupling splits the spectrum of the non-lasing mode into a triplet consisting of two relaxation oscillation sidebands which are in phase with the laser light and a center line at the lasing frequency with a phase shift of pi half relative to the laser light. As the laser intensity is increased close to threshold, the spectrum shows a continuous transition from the single amplified spontaneous emission line at the frequency of the laser mode to the triplet structure. An analytical expression for this transition is derived and typical features are discussed.

Spontaneous emission spectrum of the non-lasing supermodes in semiconductor laser arrays

It is shown that the interference between spontaneous emission into the non-lasing supermode and the laser field of a semiconductor laser array causes spatial holeburning which couples the dynamics of the spontaneous emission with the laser field. In particular, phase locking between the spontaneous emission and the lasing mode leads to the formation of a spectral triplet composed of in-phase relaxation oscillation sidebands and an out-of-phase line at the lasing frequency.

Statistical-thermodynamical foundations of anomalous diffusion

It is shown that Tsallis' generalized statistics provides a natural frame for the statistical-thermodynamical description of anomalous diffusion. Within this generalized theory, a maximum-entropy formalism makes it possible to derive a mathematical formulation for the mechanisms that underly Levy-like superdiffusion, and for solving the nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation.
