Resolution of simple singularities yielding particle symmetries in a space-time

A finite subgroup of the conformal group SL(2,C) can be related to invariant polynomials on a hypersurface in C^3. The latter then carries a simple singularity, which resolves by a finite iteration of basic cycles of deprojections. The homological intersection graph of this cycles is the Dynkin graph of an ADE Lie group. The deformation of the simple singularity corresponds to ADE symmetry breaking. A 3+1-dimensional topological model of observation is constructed, transforming consistently under SL(2,C), as an evolving 3-dimensional system of world tubes, which connect ``possible points of observation". The existence of an initial singularity for the 4-dimensional space-time is related to its global topological structure. Associating the geometry of ADE singularities to the vertex structure of the topological model puts forward the conjecture on a likewise relation of inner symmetries of elementary particles to local space-time structure.

A zeta function approach to the relation between the numbers of symmetry planes and axes of a polytope

A derivation of the Cesàro-Fedorov relation from the Selberg trace formula on an orbifolded 2-sphere is elaborated and extended to higher dimensions using the known heat-kernel coefficients for manifolds with piecewise-linear boundaries. Several results are obtained that relate the coefficients, $b_i$, in the Shephard-Todd polynomial to the geometry of the fundamental domain. For the 3-sphere we show that $b_4$ is given by the ratio of the volume of the fundamental tetrahedron to its Schläfli reciprocal.

Second N=1 Superanalog of Complex Structure

We found another N=1 odd superanalog of complex structure (the even one is widely used in the theory of super Riemann surfaces). New N=1 superconformal-like transformations are similar to anti-holomorphic ones of nonsupersymmetric complex function theory. They are dual to the ordinary superconformal transformations subject to the Berezinian addition formula presented, noninvertible, highly degenerated and twist parity of the tangent space in the standard basis. They also lead to the ''mixed cocycle condition'' which can be used in building noninvertible objects analogous to super Riemann surfaces. A new parametrization for the superconformal group is presented which allows us to extend it to a semigroup and to unify the description of old and new transformations.

Reflection groups in hyperbolic spaces and the denominator formula for Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebras

This is a continuation of our "Lecture on Kac--Moody Lie algebras of the arithmetic type" \cite{25}. We consider hyperbolic (i.e. signature $(n,1)$) integral symmetric bilinear form $S:M\times M \to {\Bbb Z}$ (i.e. hyperbolic lattice), reflection group $W\subset W(S)$, fundamental polyhedron $\Cal M$ of $W$ and an acceptable (corresponding to twisting coefficients) set $P({\Cal M})\subset M$ of vectors orthogonal to faces of $\Cal M$ (simple roots). One can construct the corresponding Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebra ${\goth g}={\goth g}^{\prime\prime}(A(S,W,P({\Cal M})))$ which is graded by $M$. We show that $\goth g$ has good behavior of imaginary roots, its denominator formula is defined in a natural domain and has good automorphic properties if and only if $\goth g$ has so called {\it restricted arithmetic type}. We show that every finitely generated (i.e. $P({\Cal M})$ is finite) algebra ${\goth g}^{\prime\prime}(A(S,W_1,P({\Cal M}_1)))$ may be embedded to ${\goth g}^{\prime\prime}(A(S,W,P({\Cal M})))$ of the restricted arithmetic type. Thus, Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebras of the restricted arithmetic type is a natural class to study. Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebras of the restricted arithmetic type have the best automorphic properties for the denominator function if they have {\it a lattice Weyl vector $ρ$}. Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebras of the restricted arithmetic type with generalized lattice Weyl vector $ρ$ are called {\it elliptic}

Hodge groups of abelian varieties with purely multiplicative reduction

The main result of the paper is that if $A$ is an abelian variety over a subfield $F$ of ${\bold C}$, and $A$ has purely multiplicative reduction at a discrete valuation of $F$, then the Hodge group of $A$ is semisimple. Further, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the Hodge group to be semisimple. We obtain bounds on certain torsion subgroups for abelian varieties which do not have purely multiplicative reduction at a given discrete valuation, and therefore obtain bounds on torsion for abelian varieties, defined over number fields, whose Hodge groups are not semisimple.

Three-block exceptional collections over Del Pezzo surfaces

We study complete exceptional collections of coherent sheaves over Del Pezzo surfaces, which consist of three blocks such that inside each block all Ext groups between the sheaves are zero. We show that the ranks of all sheaves in such a block are the same and the three ranks corresponding to a complete 3-block exceptional collection satisfy a Markov-type Diophantine equation that is quadratic in each variable. For each Del Pezzo surface, there is a finite number of these equations; the complete list is given. The 3-string braid group acts by mutations on the set of complete 3-block exceptional collections. We describe this action. In particular, any orbit contains a 3-block collection with the sum of ranks that is minimal for the solutions of the corresponding Markov-type equation, and the orbits can be obtained from each other via tensoring by an invertible sheaf and with the action of the Weyl group. This allows us to compute the number of orbits up to twisting.

Secants of Abelian Varieties, Theta functions, and Soliton Equations

This paper is a survey on relations between secant identities and soliton equations and applications of soliton equations to problems of algebraic geometry, i.e., the Riemann-Schottky problem and its analogues. A short introduction into the analytic theory of theta functions is also given.

The Igusa modular forms and ``the simplest'' Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras

We find automorphic corrections for the Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras with the simplest generalized Cartan matrices of rank 3: A_{1,0} = 2 0 -1 0 2 -2 -1 -2 2 and A_{1,I} = 2 -2 -1 -2 2 -1 -1 -1 2 For A_{1,0} this correction is given by the Igusa Sp_4(Z)-modular form χ_{35} of weight 35, and for A_{1,I} by a Siege modular form of weight 30 with respect to a 2-congruence subgroup. We find infinite product or sum expansions for these forms. Our method of construction of χ_{35} leads to the direct construction of Siegel modular forms by infinite product expansions, whose divisors are the Humbert surfaces with fixed discriminants. Existence of these forms was proved by van der Geer in 1982 using some geometrical consideration. We announce a list of all hyperbolic symmetric generalized Cartan matrices A of rank 3 such that A has elliptic or parabolic type, A has a lattice Weyl vector, and A contains the affine submatrix \tilde{A}_1.

Exact Random Walk Distributions using Noncommutative Geometry

Using the results obtained by the non commutative geometry techniques applied to the Harper equation, we derive the areas distribution of random walks of length $ N $ on a two-dimensional square lattice for large $ N $, taking into account finite size contributions.

Floppy Curves with Applications to Real Algebraic Curves

We show how one may sometimes perform singular ambient surgery on the complex locus of a real algebraic curve and obtain what we call a floppy curve. A floppy curve is a certain kind of singular surface in CP(2), more general than the complex locus of a real nodal curve. We derive analogs for floppy curves of known restrictions on real nodal curves. In particular we derive analogs of Fielder's congruence for certain nonsingular curves and Viro's inequalities for nodal curves which generalize those of Arnold and Petrovskii for nonsingular curves. We also obtain a determinant condition for certain curves which are extremal with respect to some of these equalities. One may prohibit certain schemes for real algebraic curves by prohibiting the floppy curves which result from singular ambient surgery. In this way, we give a new proof of Shustin's prohibition of the scheme $1<2\coprod 1<18>>$ for a real algebraic curve of degree eight.

Skew Schubert functions and the Pieri formula for flag manifolds

We show the equivalence of the Pieri formula for flag manifolds and certain identities among the structure constants, giving new proofs of both the Pieri formula and of these identities. A key step is the association of a symmetric function to a finite poset with labeled Hasse diagram satisfying a symmetry condition. This gives a unified definition of skew Schur functions, Stanley symmetric function, and skew Schubert functions (defined here). We also use algebraic geometry to show the coefficient of a monomial in a Schubert polynomial counts certain chains in the Bruhat order, obtaining a new combinatorial construction of Schubert polynomials.

Alexander Invariants of Complex Hyperplane Arrangements

Let A be an arrangement of complex hyperplanes. The fundamental group of the complement of A is determined by a braid monodromy homomorphism from a finitely generated free group to the pure braid group. Using the Gassner representation of the pure braid group, we find an explicit presentation for the Alexander invariant of A. From this presentation, we obtain combinatorial lower bounds for the ranks of the Chen groups of A. We also provide a combinatorial criterion for when these lower bounds are attained.

Chern classes for singular hypersurfaces

We prove a simple formula for MacPherson's Chern class of hypersurfaces in nonsingular varieties. The result highlights the relation between MacPherson's class and other definitions of homology Chern classes of singular varieties, such as Mather's Chern class and a class introduced by W. Fulton.

Solving N=2 SYM by Reflection Symmetry of Quantum Vacua

The recently rigorously proved nonperturbative relation between u and the prepotential, underlying N=2 SYM with gauge group SU(2), implies both the reflection symmetry $\overline{u(τ)}=u(-\barτ)$ and $u(τ+1)=-u(τ)$ which hold exactly. The relation also implies that $τ$ is the inverse of the uniformizing coordinate u of the moduli space of quantum vacua. In this context, the above quantum symmetries are the key points to determine the structure of the moduli space. It turns out that the functions a(u) and a_D(u), which we derive from first principles, actually coincide with the solution proposed by Seiberg and Witten. We also consider some relevant generalizations.

Nonperturbative Relations in N=2 SUSY Yang-Mills and WDVV equation

We find the nonperturbative relation between $\langle {\rm tr} ϕ^2 \rangle$, $\langle {\rm tr} ϕ^3\rangle$ the prepotential ${\cal F}$ and the vevs $\langle ϕ_i\rangle$ in $N=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with gauge group $SU(3)$. Nonlinear differential equations for ${\cal F}$ including the Witten -- Dijkgraaf -- Verlinde -- Verlinde equation are obtained. This indicates that $N=2$ SYM theories are essentially topological field theories and that should be seen as low-energy limit of some topological string theory. Furthermore, we construct relevant modular invariant quantities, derive canonical relations between the periods and investigate the structure of the beta function by giving its explicit form in the moduli coordinates. In doing this we discuss the uniformization problem for the quantum moduli space. The method we propose can be generalized to $N=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with higher rank gauge groups.
