Some aspects of noncommutative differential geometry

We discuss in some generality aspects of noncommutative differential geometry associated with reality conditions and with differential calculi. We then describe the differential calculus based on derivations as generalization of vector fields, and we show its relations with quantum mechanics. Finally we formulate a general theory of connections in this framework.

Berezin-Toeplitz Quantization of compact Kaehler manifolds

Invited lecture at the XIV-th workshop on geometric methods in physics, Bialowieza, Poland, July 9-15, 1995. In this lecture results are reviewed obtained by the author together with Martin Bordemann and Eckhard Meinrenken on the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of compact Kaehler manifolds. Using global Toeplitz operators, approximation results for the quantum operators are shown. From them it follows that the quantum operators have the correct classical limit. A star product deformation of the Poisson algebra is constructed.

Homological Reduction of Constrained Poisson Algebras

The ``classical BRST construction'' as developed by Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky is a homological construction for the reduction of the Poisson algebra $P = C^\infty (W)$ of smooth functions on a Poisson manifold $W$ by the ideal $I$ of functions which vanish on a constraint locus. This ideal is called first class if $I$ is closed under the Poisson bracket; geometers refer to the constraint locus as coisotropic. The physicists' model is crucially a differential Poisson algebra extension of a Poisson algebra $P$; its differential contains a piece which reinvented the Koszul complex for the ideal $I$ and a piece which looks like the Cartan-Chevalley-Eilenberg differential. The present paper is concerned purely with the homological (Poisson) algebraic structures, using the notion of ``model'' from rational homotopy theory and the techniques of homological perturbation theory to establish some of the basic results explaining the mathematical existence of the classical BRST-BFV construction. Although the usual treatment of BFV is basis dependent (individual constraints) and nominally finite dimensional, I take care to avoid assumptions of finite dimensionality and work more invariantly in terms of the ideal. In particular, the techniques are applied to the `irregular' case (the ideal is not generated by a regular sequence of constraints), although the geometric interpretation is less complete.

Noninvertibility and ``Semi-'' Analogs of (Super) Manifolds, Fiber Bundles and Homotopies

Supersymmetry contains initially noninvertible objects, but it is common to deal with the invertible ones only, factorizing former in some extent. We propose to reconsider this ansatz and try to redefine such fundamental notions as supermanifolds, fiber bundles and homotopies using some weakening invertibility conditions. The prefix semi- reflects the fact that the underlying morphisms form corresponding semigroups consisting of a known group part and a new ideal noninvertible part. We found that the absence of invertibility gives us the generalization of the cocycle conditions for transition functions of supermanifolds and fiber bundles in a natural way, which can lead to construction of noninvertible analogs of Čech cocycles. We define semi-homotopies, which can be noninvertible and describe mappings into the semi-supermanifolds introduced.

Deformation quantization of compact Kähler manifolds via Berezin-Toeplitz operators

This talk reports on results on the deformation quantization (star products) and on approximative operator representations for quantizable compact K"ahler manifolds obtained via Berezin-Toeplitz operators. After choosing a holomorphic quantum line bundle the Berezin-Toeplitz operator associated to a differentiable function on the manifold is the operator defined by multiplying global holomorphic sections of the line bundle with this function and projecting the differentiable section back to the subspace of holomorphic sections. The results were obtained in (respectively based on) joint work with M. Bordemann and E. Meinrenken. (Talk at the XXI Int. Coll. on Group Theoretical Methods in Physics, 15-20 July, Goslar, Germany)

Hochschild cohomology and characteristic classes for star-products

We show that the Hochschild cohomology of the algebra obtained by formal deformation quantization on a symplectic manifold is isomorphic to the formal series with coefficients in the de Rham cohomology of the manifold. The cohomology class obtained by differentiating the star-product with respect to the deformation parameter is seen to be closely related to the characteristic class of the quantization. A fundamental role in the analysis is played by ``quantum Liouville operators,'' which rescale the deformation parameter in the same way in which Liouville vector fields scale the Poisson structure (or the units of action). Several examples are given.

Borel Quantization: Kinematics and Dynamics

In this contribution we review results on the kinematics of a quantum system localized on a connected configuration manifold and compatible dynamics for the quantum system including external fields and leading to non-linear Schrödinger equations for pure states.

Riemannian Manifolds with Diagonal Metric. The Lamé and Bourlet Systems

We discuss a Lie algebraic and differential geometry construction of solutions to some multidimensional nonlinear integrable systems describing diagonal metrics on Riemannian manifolds, in particular those of zero and constant curvature. Here some special solutions to the Lamé and Bourlet type equations, determining by n arbitrary functions of one variable are obtained in an explicit form. For the case when the sum of the diagonal elements of the metric is a constant, these solutions are expressed as a product of the Jacobi elliptic functions and are determined by 2n arbitrary constants.

Geometry of Lagrangian First-order Classical Field Theories

We construct a lagrangian geometric formulation for first-order field theories using the canonical structures of first-order jet bundles, which are taken as the phase spaces of the systems in consideration. First of all, we construct all the geometric structures associated with a first-order jet bundle and, using them, we develop the lagrangian formalism, defining the canonical forms associated with a lagrangian density and the density of lagrangian energy, obtaining the {\sl Euler-Lagrange equations} in two equivalent ways: as the result of a variational problem and developing the {\sl jet field formalism} (which is a formulation more similar to the case of mechanical systems). A statement and proof of Noether's theorem is also given, using the latter formalism. Finally, some classical examples are briefly studied.

On the first order operators in bimodules

We analyse the structure of the first order operators in bimodules introduced by A. Connes. We apply this analysis to the theory of connections on bimodules generalizing thereby several proposals.

Phase Space Reduction for Star-Products: An Explicit Construction for CP^n

We derive a closed formula for a star-product on complex projective space and on the domain $SU(n+1)/S(U(1)\times U(n))$ using a completely elementary construction: Starting from the standard star-product of Wick type on $C^{n+1} \setminus \{ 0 \}$ and performing a quantum analogue of Marsden-Weinstein reduction, we can give an easy algebraic description of this star-product. Moreover, going over to a modified star-product on $C^{n+1} \setminus \{ 0 \}$, obtained by an equivalence transformation, this description can be even further simplified, allowing the explicit computation of a closed formula for the star-product on $\CP^n$ which can easily transferred to the domain $SU(n+1)/S(U(1)\times U(n))$.

3-manifolds with(out) metrics of nonpositive curvature

In the context of Thurstons geometrisation program we address the question which compact aspherical 3-manifolds admit Riemannian metrics of nonpositive curvature. We show that non-geometric Haken manifolds generically, but not always, admit such metrics. More precisely, we prove that a Haken manifold with, possibly empty, boundary of zero Euler characteristic admits metrics of nonpositive curvature if the boundary is non-empty or if at least one atoroidal component occurs in its canonical topological decomposition. Our arguments are based on Thurstons Hyperbolisation Theorem. We give examples of closed graph-manifolds with linear gluing graph and arbitrarily many Seifert components which do not admit metrics of nonpositive curvature.

A Simple Geometric Representative for $μ$ of a Point

For $SU(2)$ (or $SO(3)$) Donaldson theory on a 4-manifold $X$, we construct a simple geometric representative for $μ$ of a point. Let $p$ be a generic point in $X$. Then the set $\{ [A] | F_A^-(p) $ is reducible $\}$, with coefficient -1/4 and appropriate orientation, is our desired geometric representative.

Obstruction Results in Quantization Theory

We define the quantization structures for Poisson algebras necessary to generalise Groenewold and Van Hove's result that there is no consistent quantization for the Poisson algebra of Euclidean phase space. Recently a similar obstruction was obtained for the sphere, though surprising enough there is no obstruction to the quantization of the torus. In this paper we want to analyze the circumstances under which such obstructions appear. In this context we review the known results for the Poisson algebras of Euclidean space, the sphere and the torus.

L^2-torsion of hyperbolic manifolds of finite volume

Suppose $\bar{M}$ is a compact connected odd-dimensional manifold with boundary, whose interior $M$ comes with a complete hyperbolic metric of finite volume. We will show that the $L^2$-topological torsion of $\bar{M}$ and the $L^2$-analytic torsion of the Riemannian manifold $M$ are equal. In particular, the $L^2$-topological torsion of $\bar{M}$ is proportional to the hyperbolic volume of $M$, with a constant of proportionality which depends only on the dimension and which is known to be nonzero in dimension 3, 5 and 7. In dimension 3 this proves the conjecture Of Lott and Lueck which gives a complete calculation of the $L^2$-topological torsion of compact $L^2$-acyclic 3-manifolds which admit a geometric torus-decomposition. In an appendix we give a counterexample to an extension of the Cheeger-Mueller theorem to manifolds with boundary: if the metric is not a product near the boundary, in general analytic and topological torsion are not equal, even if the Euler characteristic of the boundary vanishes. Keywords: L^2-torsion, hyperbolic manifolds, 3-manifolds

Higher-order simple Lie algebras

It is shown that the non-trivial cocycles on simple Lie algebras may be used to introduce antisymmetric multibrackets which lead to higher-order Lie algebras, the definition of which is given. Their generalised Jacobi identities turn out to be satisfied by the antisymmetric tensors (or higher-order `structure constants') which characterise the Lie algebra cocycles. This analysis allows us to present a classification of the higher-order simple Lie algebras as well as a constructive procedure for them. Our results are synthesised by the introduction of a single, complete BRST operator associated with each simple algebra.

Twisted N=2 Supersymmetry with Central Charge and Equivariant Cohomology

We present an equivariant extension of the Thom form with respect to a vector field action, in the framework of the Mathai-Quillen formalism. The associated Topological Quantum Field Theories correspond to twisted $N=2$ supersymmetric theories with a central charge. We analyze in detail two different cases: topological sigma models and non-abelian monopoles on four-manifolds.
