Secants of Abelian Varieties, Theta functions, and Soliton Equations

This paper is a survey on relations between secant identities and soliton equations and applications of soliton equations to problems of algebraic geometry, i.e., the Riemann-Schottky problem and its analogues. A short introduction into the analytic theory of theta functions is also given.

The Igusa modular forms and ``the simplest'' Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras

We find automorphic corrections for the Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras with the simplest generalized Cartan matrices of rank 3: A_{1,0} = 2 0 -1 0 2 -2 -1 -2 2 and A_{1,I} = 2 -2 -1 -2 2 -1 -1 -1 2 For A_{1,0} this correction is given by the Igusa Sp_4(Z)-modular form χ_{35} of weight 35, and for A_{1,I} by a Siege modular form of weight 30 with respect to a 2-congruence subgroup. We find infinite product or sum expansions for these forms. Our method of construction of χ_{35} leads to the direct construction of Siegel modular forms by infinite product expansions, whose divisors are the Humbert surfaces with fixed discriminants. Existence of these forms was proved by van der Geer in 1982 using some geometrical consideration. We announce a list of all hyperbolic symmetric generalized Cartan matrices A of rank 3 such that A has elliptic or parabolic type, A has a lattice Weyl vector, and A contains the affine submatrix \tilde{A}_1.

Exact Random Walk Distributions using Noncommutative Geometry

Using the results obtained by the non commutative geometry techniques applied to the Harper equation, we derive the areas distribution of random walks of length $ N $ on a two-dimensional square lattice for large $ N $, taking into account finite size contributions.

Floppy Curves with Applications to Real Algebraic Curves

We show how one may sometimes perform singular ambient surgery on the complex locus of a real algebraic curve and obtain what we call a floppy curve. A floppy curve is a certain kind of singular surface in CP(2), more general than the complex locus of a real nodal curve. We derive analogs for floppy curves of known restrictions on real nodal curves. In particular we derive analogs of Fielder's congruence for certain nonsingular curves and Viro's inequalities for nodal curves which generalize those of Arnold and Petrovskii for nonsingular curves. We also obtain a determinant condition for certain curves which are extremal with respect to some of these equalities. One may prohibit certain schemes for real algebraic curves by prohibiting the floppy curves which result from singular ambient surgery. In this way, we give a new proof of Shustin's prohibition of the scheme $1<2\coprod 1<18>>$ for a real algebraic curve of degree eight.

Skew Schubert functions and the Pieri formula for flag manifolds

We show the equivalence of the Pieri formula for flag manifolds and certain identities among the structure constants, giving new proofs of both the Pieri formula and of these identities. A key step is the association of a symmetric function to a finite poset with labeled Hasse diagram satisfying a symmetry condition. This gives a unified definition of skew Schur functions, Stanley symmetric function, and skew Schubert functions (defined here). We also use algebraic geometry to show the coefficient of a monomial in a Schubert polynomial counts certain chains in the Bruhat order, obtaining a new combinatorial construction of Schubert polynomials.

Alexander Invariants of Complex Hyperplane Arrangements

Let A be an arrangement of complex hyperplanes. The fundamental group of the complement of A is determined by a braid monodromy homomorphism from a finitely generated free group to the pure braid group. Using the Gassner representation of the pure braid group, we find an explicit presentation for the Alexander invariant of A. From this presentation, we obtain combinatorial lower bounds for the ranks of the Chen groups of A. We also provide a combinatorial criterion for when these lower bounds are attained.

Chern classes for singular hypersurfaces

We prove a simple formula for MacPherson's Chern class of hypersurfaces in nonsingular varieties. The result highlights the relation between MacPherson's class and other definitions of homology Chern classes of singular varieties, such as Mather's Chern class and a class introduced by W. Fulton.

Solving N=2 SYM by Reflection Symmetry of Quantum Vacua

The recently rigorously proved nonperturbative relation between u and the prepotential, underlying N=2 SYM with gauge group SU(2), implies both the reflection symmetry $\overline{u(τ)}=u(-\barτ)$ and $u(τ+1)=-u(τ)$ which hold exactly. The relation also implies that $τ$ is the inverse of the uniformizing coordinate u of the moduli space of quantum vacua. In this context, the above quantum symmetries are the key points to determine the structure of the moduli space. It turns out that the functions a(u) and a_D(u), which we derive from first principles, actually coincide with the solution proposed by Seiberg and Witten. We also consider some relevant generalizations.

Nonperturbative Relations in N=2 SUSY Yang-Mills and WDVV equation

We find the nonperturbative relation between $\langle {\rm tr} ϕ^2 \rangle$, $\langle {\rm tr} ϕ^3\rangle$ the prepotential ${\cal F}$ and the vevs $\langle ϕ_i\rangle$ in $N=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with gauge group $SU(3)$. Nonlinear differential equations for ${\cal F}$ including the Witten -- Dijkgraaf -- Verlinde -- Verlinde equation are obtained. This indicates that $N=2$ SYM theories are essentially topological field theories and that should be seen as low-energy limit of some topological string theory. Furthermore, we construct relevant modular invariant quantities, derive canonical relations between the periods and investigate the structure of the beta function by giving its explicit form in the moduli coordinates. In doing this we discuss the uniformization problem for the quantum moduli space. The method we propose can be generalized to $N=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with higher rank gauge groups.

Modular Invariance and Structure of the Exact Wilsonian Action of N=2 SYM

We construct modular invariants on the moduli space of quantum vacua of N=2 SYM with gauge group SU(2). We also introduce a nonchiral function K which is expressed in terms of the Seiberg-Witten and Poincare' metrics. It turns out that K has all the expected properties of the next to leading term in the Wilsonian effective action whose modular properties are considered in the framework of the dimensional regularization.

Representations of Composite Braids and Invariants for Mutant Knots and Links in Chern-Simons Field Theories

We show that any of the new knot invariants obtained from Chern-Simons theory based on an arbitrary non-abelian gauge group do not distinguish isotopically inequivalent mutant knots and links. In an attempt to distinguish these knots and links, we study Murakami (symmetrized version) $r$-strand composite braids. Salient features of the theory of such composite braids are presented. Representations of generators for these braids are obtained by exploiting properties of Hilbert spaces associated with the correlators of Wess-Zumino conformal field theories. The $r$-composite invariants for the knots are given by the sum of elementary Chern-Simons invariants associated with the irreducible representations in the product of $r$ representations (allowed by the fusion rules of the corresponding Wess-Zumino conformal field theory) placed on the $r$ individual strands of the composite braid. On the other hand, composite invariants for links are given by a weighted sum of elementary multicoloured Chern-Simons invariants. Some mutant links can be distinguished through the composite invariants, but mutant knots do not share this property. The results, though developed in detail within the framework of $SU(2)$ Chern-Simons theory are valid for any other non-abelian gauge group.

Dual Polyhedra, Mirror Symmetry and Landau-Ginzburg Orbifolds

New geometrical features of the Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds are presented, for models with a typical type of superpotential. We show the one-to-one correspondence between some of the $(a,c)$ states with $U(1)$ charges $(-1,1)$ and the integral points on the dual polyhedra, which are useful tools for the construction of mirror manifolds. Relying on toric geometry, these states are shown to correspond to the $(1,1)$ forms coming from blowing-up processes. In terms of the above identification, it can be checked that the monomial-divisor mirror map for Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds, proposed by the author, is equivalent to that mirror map for Calabi-Yau manifolds obtained by the mathematicians.

Spin-Flavour Symmetry and Contractions Towards Classical Space-Time Symmetry

A classification scheme of hadrons is proposed on the basis of the division algebra H of quaternions and an appropriate geometry. This scheme suggests strongly to understand flavour symmetry in another manner than from standard symmetry schemes. In our approach, we do not start from `exact' symmetry groups like SU(2) \times SU(2) chiral symmetry and impose various symmetry breaking mechanisms which collide with theorems wellknown from quantum field theory. On the contrary, the approximate symmetry properties of the hadron spectrum at low energies, usually classified by `appropriately' broken compact flavour groups, emerge very naturally as a low energy reduction of the noncompact (dynamical) symmetry group Sl(2,H). This quaternionic approach not only avoids most of the wellknown conceptual problems of Chiral Dynamics but it also allows for a general treatment of relativistic flavour symmetries as well as it yields a direct connection towards classical relativistic symmetry.

Schubert polynomials, the Bruhat order, and the geometry of flag manifolds

We illuminate the relation between the Bruhat order on the symmetric group and structure constants (Littlewood-Richardson coefficients) for the cohomology of the flag manifold in terms of its basis of Schubert classes. Equivalently, the structure constants for the ring of polynomials in variables $x_1,x_2,...$ in terms of its basis of Schubert polynomials. We use combinatorial, algebraic, and geometric methods, notably a study of intersections of Schubert varieties and maps between flag manifolds. We establish a number of new identities among these structure constants. This leads to formulas for some of these constants and new results on the enumeration of chains in the Bruhat order. A new graded partial order on the symmetric group which contains Young's lattice arises from these investigations. We also derive formulas for certain specializations of Schubert polynomials.

PU(2) monopoles. II: Top-level Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces and Witten's conjecture in low degrees

In this article we complete the proof---for a broad class of four-manifolds---of Witten's conjecture that the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series coincide, at least through terms of degree less than or equal to c-2, where c is a linear combination of the Euler characteristic and signature of the four-manifold. This article is a revision of sections 4--7 of an earlier version, while a revision of sections 1--3 of that earlier version now appear in a separate companion article (math.DG/0007190). Here, we use our computations of Chern classes for the virtual normal bundles for the Seiberg-Witten strata from the companion article (math.DG/0007190), a comparison of all the orientations, and the PU(2) monopole cobordism to compute pairings with the links of level-zero Seiberg-Witten moduli subspaces of the moduli space of PU(2) monopoles. These calculations then allow us to compute low-degree Donaldson invariants in terms of Seiberg-Witten invariants and provide a partial verification of Witten's conjecture.

On the Deligne--Beilinson cohomology sheaves

We are showing that the Deligne--Beilinson cohomology sheaves ${\cal H}^{q+1}({\bf Z}(q)_{\cal D})$ are torsion free by assuming Kato's conjectures hold true for function fields. This result is `effective' for $q=2$; in this case, by dealing with `arithmetic properties' of the presheaves of mixed Hodge structures defined by singular cohomology, we are able to give a cohomological characterization of the Albanese kernel for surfaces with $p_g=0$.

Sheaves on Toric Varieties for Physics

In this paper we give an inherently toric description of a special class of sheaves (known as equivariant sheaves) over toric varieties, due in part to A. A. Klyachko. We apply this technology to heterotic compactifications, in particular to the (0,2) models of Distler, Kachru, and also discuss how knowledge of equivariant sheaves can be used to reconstruct information about an entire moduli space of sheaves. Many results relevant to heterotic compactifications previously known only to mathematicians are collected here -- for example, results concerning whether the restriction of a stable sheaf to a Calabi-Yau hypersurface remains stable are stated. We also describe substructure in the Kahler cone, in which moduli spaces of sheaves are independent of Kahler class only within any one subcone. We study F theory compactifications in light of this fact, and also discuss how it can be seen in the context of equivariant sheaves on toric varieties. Finally we briefly speculate on the application of these results to (0,2) mirror symmetry.
