KBS 13 -- a Rare Reflection Effect sdB Binary with an M Dwarf Secondary

We report preliminary VRI differential photometric and spectroscopic results for KBS 13, a recently discovered non-eclipsing sdB+dM system. Radial velocity measurements indicate an orbital period of 0.2923 +/- 0.0004 days with a semi-amplitude velocity of 22.82 +/- 0.23 km s-1. This suggests the smallest secondary minimum mass yet found. We discuss the distribution of orbital periods and secondary minimum masses for other similar systems.

Hubble Space Telescope Imaging of the Expanding Nebular Remnant of the 2006 Outburst of RS Ophiuchi

We report {\it Hubble Space Telescope} imaging obtained 155 days and 449 days after the 2006 outburst of RS Ophiuchi. Both epochs show evidence of extended emission, consistent with that seen in earlier radio observations, and a maximum expansion rate of $3200\pm300$ km s$^{-1}$ (in the plane of the sky). The extended structure is consistent with the remnant having a bipolar morphology with an inclination similar to that determined for the binary.

Cosmological interplay between general relativity and particle physics

We clearly formulate and study further a conjecture of effective field theory interaction with gravity in the cosmological context. The conjecture stems from the fact that the melding of quantum theory and gravity typically indicates the presence of an inherent UV cutoff. Taking note of the physical origin of this UV cutoff, that the background metric fluctuations does not allow QFT to operate with a better precision than the background space resolution, we conjecture that the converse statement might also be true. That is, an effective field theory could not perceive the background space with a better precision than it is allowed by its intrinsic UV scale. Some of the subtleties and cosmological implications of this conjecture are explored.

A Global Energetic Model for Microquasars: preliminary results and spectral energy distributions

We present preliminary results and observables from a model of microquasar based on a theoretical framework where stationary, powerful, compact jets are launched and then accelerated from an inner magnetized disk. This model aim at providing a consistent picture of microquasars in all their spectral states. It is composed of an outer standard accretion disk down to a variable transition radius where it changes to a magnetized disk, called the Jet Emitting Disk (JED). The theoretical framework providing the heating, we solve the radiative equilibrium and obtain the JED structure. Our JED solutions are rich, and reproduce the already known scheme where a cold optically-thick and a hot optically-thin solutions bracket a thermally unstable one. We present the model and preliminary results, whith a first attempt at reproducing the observed SED of XTE J1118+480.

Cosmology from very high energy $γ$-rays

In this work we study how the cosmological parameter, the Hubble constant $H_0$, can be constrained by observation of very high energy (VHE) $γ$-rays at the TeV scale. The VHE $γ$-rays experience attenuation by background radiation field through $e^+e^-$ pair production during the propagation in the intergalactic space. This effect is proportional to the distance that the VHE $γ$-rays go through. Therefore the absorption of TeV $γ$-rays can be taken as cosmological distance indicator to constrain the cosmological parameters. Two blazars Mrk 501 and 1ES 1101-232, which have relatively good spectra measurements by the atmospheric Cerenkov telescope, are studied to constrain $H_0$. The mechanism constraining the Hubble constant adopted here is very different from the previous methods such as the observations of type Ia supernovae and the cosmic microwave background. However, at $2σ$ level, our result is consistent with other methods.

Testing the Kochen-Specker theorem with Josephson qubits

We propose an experimental approach to {\it macro}scopically test the Kochen-Specker theorem (KST) with superconducting qubits. This theorem, which has been experimentally tested with single photons or neutrons, concerns the conflict between the contextuality of quantum mechnaics (QM) and the noncontextuality of hidden-variable theories (HVTs). We first show that two Josephson charge qubits can be controllably coupled by using a two-level data bus produced by a Josephson phase qubit. Next, by introducing an approach to perform the expected joint quantum measurements of two separated Josephson qubits, we show that the proposed quantum circuits could demonstrate quantum contextuality by testing the KST at a macroscopic level.

Why do cosmological perturbations look classical to us?

According to the inflationary scenario of cosmology, all structure in the Universe can be traced back to primordial fluctuations during an accelerated (inflationary) phase of the very early Universe. A conceptual problem arises due to the fact that the primordial fluctuations are quantum, while the standard scenario of structure formation deals with classical fluctuations. In this essay we present a concise summary of the physics describing the quantum-to-classical transition. We first discuss the observational indistinguishability between classical and quantum correlation functions in the closed system approach (pragmatic view). We then present the open system approach with environment-induced decoherence. We finally discuss the question of the fluctuations' entropy for which, in principle, the concrete mechanism leading to decoherence possesses observational relevance.

High-energy emission from microqusars

If the jets of microquasars carry a significant power in the form of relativistic hadrons, then gamma rays and neutrinos can be produced by interactions with matter and photon fields either external or internal to the jet. In this paper I present some recent results of calculations of the interaction of hadronic jets with 1) matter of the jet itself, 2) photon fields generated by synchrotron radiation of both protons and electrons, and 3) matter external to the jet (e.g. a clumped wind). I briefly discuss neutrino production in these scenarios and the prospects of detection with new gamma-ray instruments. Finally, I make a few comments on the controversy about the nature of LS I +61 303.

On the nature of HD 207331: a new Delta Scuti variable

While testing a Stromgren spectrophotometer attached to the 1.5-m telescope at the San Pedro Martir observatory, Mexico, a number of A-type stars were observed, one of which, HD 207331, presented clear indications of photometric variability. CCD photometric data acquired soon after, confirmed its variability. In order to determine its pulsation behaviour more accurately, uvby differential photoelectric photometry was carried out for three nights. As a result of the period analysis of the light curves we have found a dominant pulsation mode at 21.1 c/d with an amplitude of 6 mmag. This strongly suggests that HD 207331 is a new Delta Scuti-type pulsating star.

Jet Formation in MHD Simulations

In this talk I review the current status of jet formation in direct numerical simulations of black-hole accretion disks and magnetospheres. I address the following critical questions: What constitutes the jet? What is the launching mechanism? Where is the launching point of the jet? What is the Lorentz factor? What is the opening angle? How is the jet collimated? Just as importantly, I also discuss how dependent the answers to the above questions are on factors such as the initial conditions of the simulation. I end by discussing possible future directions for this research.

GMRT study of X-shaped radio sources

Context. The nature of X-shaped sources is a matter of considerable debate in the literature: it has even been proposed that they provide evidence for black-hole-mergers/spin-reorientation, and therefore constrain the rate of strong gravitational wave events. Aim. To explore the nature of these X-shaped radio galaxies. Method. We conduct a systematic study of a large sample of known and newly discovered X-shaped sources along with a comparison sample. We used the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope with resolution of $\sim6^{\prime\prime}$ to $\sim15^{\prime\prime}$ at 610 MHz and 240 MHz in the dual-frequency mode. Preliminary Result. Based on our careful analysis and estimation of the possible systematic errors, the known X-shaped sources divide into the following three categories: (i) the wings have flatter spectral indices than the active lobes, (ii) the wings and the active lobes have comparable spectral indices, and (iii) the wings have steeper spectral indices than the active lobes. In addition, based on our preliminary analysis, one sample source from our comparison sample shows a spectral index result belonging to category (i). Future. Milliarcsecond scale imaging will be conducted on some of these X-shaped sources to investigate if they are examples of binary AGN systems and thereby understand the nature of these sources.

IAU Planet Definition: Some Confusions and Their Modifications

International Astronomical Union (IAU) has passed the must needed definition of planet in its general assembly held in Prague during August 2006. The definition had to be passed by means of voting. A group of scientists who raised the banner of revolt against the IAU definition has pointed out that the IAU has failed to give an acceptable definition regarding a planet. A brief description of the serious objections found in the definition of planet has been discussed here. In this paper an attempt has also been made to give a new definition of a planet by introducing some modifications to the IAU definition.

Dynamics of a self-gravitating magnetized neutron source

The dynamics of a self-gravitating neutron gas in presence of a magnetic field is being studied taking the equation of state of a magnetized neutron gas obtained in a previous study [2]. We work in a Bianchi I spacetime characterized by a Kasner metric, this metric allow us to take into account the anisotropy that introduces the magnetic field. The set of Einstein-Maxwell field equations for this gas becomes a dynamical system in a 4-dimensional phase space. We get numerical solutions of the system. In particular there is a unique point like solution for different initial conditions. Physically this singular solution may be associated with the collapse of a local volume of neutron material within a neutron star.

Lee Wick Dark Energy

We consider the cosmological application of Lee-Wick theory where a field has a higher derivative kinetic operators. The higher derivative term can be eliminated by introducing a set of auxiliary fields. We investigate the cosmological evolutions of these fields as a candidate of dark energy. This model has the same structure as so called ``quintom' model except the form of potentials and the sign of the slope of the potentials. This model can give the stable late time phantom dominated scaling solution ($ω_{\DE} < -1$) or tracking attractors ($ω_{\DE} = 0$) depending on the choice of the slopes of the potential. In order to be a viable dark energy candidate, the present energy density contrast of dark energy ($Ω_{\DE}^{(0)}$) should be close to an observed value (0.73) at the same time. However, a simple toy model of the theory can not satisfy both $ω_{\DE}^{(0)} \simeq -1$ and $Ω_{\DE}^{(0)} = 0.73$. If we include the self interaction term of Lee Wick field, then we are able to produce the observed values of those quantities. However, in this case we are not be able to have the stable solutions and we need to suffer from the fine tuning of its mass.

IRC-10443: a multi-periodic SRa variable and the nature of long secondary periods in AGB stars

We obtained BVIc photometry of IRC-10443 on 85 different nights distributed over two years, and in addition low resolution absolute spectro- photometry and high resolution Echelle spectroscopy. Our data show that IRC-10443, which was never studied before in any detail, is a SRa variable, characterized by Delta(B)=1.27, Delta(V)=1.14 and Delta(I)=0.70 mag amplitudes and mean values =13.75, =11.33 and =6.18 mag. Two strong periodicities are simultaneously present: a principal one of 85.5 (+/-0.2) days, and a secondary one of 620 (+/-15) days, both sinusoidal in shape, and with semi-amplitudes Delta(V)=0.41 and 0.20 mag, respectively. IRC-10443 turns out to be a M7III star, with a mean heliocentric radial velocity -28 km/s and reddened by E(B-V)=0.87, a third of which of circumstellar origin. The same 0.5 kpc distance is derived from application of the appropriate period-luminosity relations to both the principal and the secondary periods. The long secondary period causes a sinusoidal variation in color of 0.13 mag semi-amplitude in V-Ic, with IRC-10443 being bluest at maximum and reddest at minimum, and with associated changes in effective temperature and radius of 85 K and 6%, respectively. This behavior of colors argues in favor of a pulsation nature for the still mysterious long secondary periods in AGB stars.

New indirect bounds on Lorentz violation in the photon sector

Direct laboratory bounds on the 9 nonbirefringent Lorentz-violating dimensionless parameters of modified-Maxwell theory range from the 10^{-7} level to the 10^{-16} level. The detection of air showers initiated by charged primaries (ultrahigh-energy cosmic-rays) and neutral primaries (TeV gamma-rays) allows us to obtain new indirect bounds ranging from the 10^{-15} level to the 10^{-19} level. Possible physics implications are briefly discussed.

Suzaku Observations of Cyg X-1

We present highlights from a series of four simultaneous Suzaku/RXTE observations of the black hole candidate Cyg X-1. We briefly summarize several key results from our decade long RXTE monitoring campaign. We then comment on challenges of analyzing the Suzaku data, i.e., improving the aspect correction beyond that of the existing tools, and quantitatively assessing pileup. All of our Suzaku observations (one, by design) occurred at or very near orbital phase 0 (superior conjunction), and hence show evolution in color-color diagrams due to X-ray absorption by material from the wind of the secondary. We present simple partial absorption models for this evolution. We then compare the Suzaku and RXTE data, and explicitly divide the Fe line region into narrow and broad components. Both are required for the Suzaku data, and are seen to be consistent with the RXTE data. These Suzaku observations occurred near historically hard, low flux states. We present fits of the broad band spectra with a simple phenomenological broken powerlaw model, as well as a more physically motivated Comptonization model. Whereas the former class of models described nearly all of the RXTE campaign better than any physical model, here the latter model is slightly more successful. The Comptonization model, however, exhibits little evidence for a soft disk component, which formally corresponds to a small, inner disk radius. Whether this is physical, due to unmodeled absorption, or is a calibration issue, remains an open question.
