Braided fusion categories, gravitational anomalies, and the mathematical framework for topological orders in any dimensions

Gravitational anomalies can be realized on the boundary of topologically ordered states in one higher dimension and are described by topological orders in one higher dimension. In this paper, we try to develop a general theory for both topological order and gravitational anomaly in any dimensions. (1) We introduce the notion of BF category to describe the braiding and fusion properties of topological excitations that can be point-like, string-like, etc. A subset of BF categories -- closed BF categories -- classify topological orders in any dimensions, while generic BF categories classify (potentially) anomalous topological orders that can appear at a boundary of a gapped quantum liquid in one higher dimension. (2) We introduce topological path integral based on tensor network to realize those topological orders. (3) Bosonic topological orders have an important topological invariant: the vector bundles of the degenerate ground states over the moduli spaces of closed spaces with different metrics. They may fully characterize topological orders. (4) We conjecture that a topological order has a gappable boundary iff the above mentioned vector bundles are flat. (5) We find a holographic phenomenon that every topological order with a gappable boundary can be uniquely determined by the knowledge of the boundary. As a consequence, BF categories in different dimensions form a (monoid) cochain complex, that reveals the structure and relation of topological orders and gravitational anomalies in different dimensions. We also studied the simplest kind of bosonic topological orders that have no non-trivial topological excitations. We find that this kind of topological orders form a $\mathbb{Z}$ class in 2+1D (with gapless edge), a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ class in 4+1D (with gappable boundary), and a $\mathbb{Z}\oplus \mathbb{Z}$ class in 6+1D (with gapless boundary).

Spin Order by Quantum Frustration in Triangular Lattice Mott Insulator NaCrO2 : A Neutron Scattering Study

We report high resolution neutron scattering measurements on the triangular lattice Mott insulator Na$_x$CrO$_2$ ($x$=1) which has recently been shown to exhibit an unusually broad fluctuating crossover regime extending far below the onset of spin freezing ($T_c\sim$41K). Our results show that below some crossover temperature ($T\sim0.75T_c$) a small incommensuration develops which helps resolve the spin frustration and drives three-dimensional magnetic order supporting coherent spin wave modes. This incommensuration assisted dimensional crossover suggests that inter-layer frustration is responsible for stabilizing the rare 2D correlated phase above 0.75$T_c$. In contrast to the host compound of 2D cobaltate superconductor such as Na$_x$CoO$_2$ ($ξ_c>50$Å), no magnetic long-range order is observed down to 1.5K ($ξ_c<16$Å).

Nature of itineracy in CoV$_2$O$_4$: A first principles study

Inspired by recent experiments, we have theoretically explored the nature of itineracy in CoV$_2$O$_4$ under pressure and investigated, using first principles density functional theory calculations, if it has any magnetic and orbital ordering. Our calculations indicate that there could be two possible routes to obtain the experimentally observed pressure induced metallicity in this system. One is the spin-orbit interaction coupled with Coulomb correlation which can take the system from a semiconducting state at ambient pressure to a metallic state under high pressure. The other mechanism, as indicated by our GGA+U calculations, is based on the presence of two types of electrons in the system: localized and itinerant. An effective Falicov-Kimball model could then possibly explain the observed insulator to metal transition. Comparison of the two scenarios with existing experimental observations leads us to believe that the second scenario offers a better explanation for the mechanism of insulator to metal transition in CoV$_2$O$_4$ under pressure.

Effect of carrier concentration on magnetism and magnetic order in the pyrochlore iridates

We present resistivity, magnetization, and zero field muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) data for the pyrochlore iridate materials Nd$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ ($x = 0, 0.06$, and $0.10$) and Sm$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. While Nd$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (Nd227) is weakly conducting, Sm$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (Sm227) has slowly diverging resistivity at low temperature. Nd227 and Sm227 exhibit magnetic anomalies at $T_{M} = 105 K$ and $137 K$, respectively. However, zero-field $μ$SR measurements show that long-range magnetic order of the Ir$^{4+}$ sublattice sets in at much lower temperatures ($T_{LRO} \sim 8 K$ for Nd227 and $70 K$ for Sm227); both materials show heavily damped muon precession with a characteristic frequency near 9 MHz. The magnetic anomaly at $T_{M}$ in Nd227 is not significantly affected by the introduction of hole carriers by Ca-substitution in the conducting Nd$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ samples, but the muon precession is fully suppressed for both.

A Neutron Scattering Study of the H-T Phase Diagram of the Bond Frustrated ZnCr2S4

Detailed neutron scattering measurements on the bond frustrated magnet ZnCr2S4 reveal a rich H-T phase diagram. The field dependence of the two subsequent antiferromagnetic transitions follows closely that of recently reported structural instabilities, providing further evidence for spin driven Jahn-Teller physics. The incommensurate helical ordered phase below TN1 = 15.5 K exhibits gapless spin wave excitations, whereas a spin wave gap (about 2 meV) opens below TN2 = 8 K as the system undergoes a first-order transition to a commensurate collinear ordered phase. The spin wave gap is closed by a strong magnetic field.

Phase coexistence and interrupted 1st order transition in magnetic shape memory alloys

Current theoretical studies on structural and magnetic properties of functional Ni-Mn-Z (Z = Ga, In, Sn) Heusler alloys address the origin of the structural transition from the austenite to martensite, and also address the dominant contribution to the latent heat associated with this magneto-structural transition. This should help understand the origin of kinetic arrest of 1st order magnetic transitions.

The effect of strain on the thawing of the hidden state and other transitions in 1T-TaS2

We investigate the effect of 2-dimensional (in-plane) strain on the critical transition temperature TH from the photoexcited hidden state in 1T-TaS$_2$ thin films on different substrates. We also measure the effect of in-plane strain on the transition temperature $T_{c2}$ between the nearly commensurate charge-density wave state and the commensurate state near 200 K. In each case, the strain is caused by the differential contraction of the sample and the substrate, and ranges from 0.5 % compressive strain (CaF$_2$) to 2 % tensile strain (sapphire). Strain appears to have an opposite effect on the H state and the NC-C state transitions. TH shows a large and negative strain coefficient of dT$_H$/de = - 8900+/-500 K, while $T_{c2}$ is not strongly affected by tensile strain and shows a positive coefficient for compressive strain, which is opposite to the effect observed for hydrostatic pressure.

Stability and magnetization curve of spin-nematic phase slightly below saturation field

We discuss the magnetization process slightly below the saturation field in frustrated magnets. A condensation of bound magnons on the spin-polarized state induces either a spin nematic phase or a state with phase separation. The (effective) interaction between the bound magnon pairs not only is crucial to the stability of the nematic phase, but also determines the slope of the magnetization curve near saturation. We generally derive the expression of this interaction by using the perturbative scattering theory. By applying the method to coupled zigzag chains LiCuVO4, we find the positive pair-pair interaction implying the stability of the spin nematic phase. We also point out that the magnetization curve of LiCuVO4 is almost vertical (i.e. very large dM/dH) near the saturation exhibiting one-dimensional feature despite non-negligible interchain couplings.

Chiral skyrmion states in non-centrosymmetric magnets

Chiral skyrmion states exist in non - centrosymmetric magnetic crystals as a consequence of the asymmetric exchange Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions that destroy the homogeneous magnetic state and generally lead to twisted incommensurate magnetic spin-structures. Recently, skyrmion lattices and free skyrmions in magnetic layers of the chiral helimagnets with the noncentrosymmetric cubic B20 crystal structure have been observed. The stabilization of these states and their transformation properties impressively illustrate the theoretically predicted solitonic nature of these chiral two-dimensionally localized spin-states. This paper is mainly devoted to numerically rigorous solutions of hexagonal skyrmion lattices for cubic helimagnets. It justifies and extends previous approximate solutions that used a circular cell approximation (CCA) for the calculation of the free energy of skyrmion lattices. The theoretical results of the present paper provide a comprehensive description of skyrmion lattice evolution in an applied magnetic field and/or in the presence of uniaxial, cubic, and exchange anisotropy. The low-temperature phenomenological theory with fixed modulus of magnetization, M=const, is applied to the magnetic states in chiral magnets.

Spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking on a fully polarized frustrated magnet at finite temperature

Frustration can introduce more-than-two minima in a spin dispersion relation even in a fully polarized magnet under high magnetic field. We generally discuss, on the fully polarized phase, the possibility of the chiral symmetry breaking where the number of magnons pumped by finite temperature deviates to one side of minima. We study this phase by constructing the Ginzburg-Landau energy which is controlled by the external magnetic field and interactions between magnons near the dispersion minima. This chirality breaking phase accompanies, not a magnetization perpendicular to the external field, but the vector chirality $S_m \times S_n$. We also discuss the possibility of the chirality breaking phase on LiCuVO4 slightly above the saturation field.

Fractional excitations in one-dimensional fermionic superfluids

We study the soliton modes carrying fractional quantum numbers in one-dimensional superfluids. In the $s$-wave pairing superfluid with the phase of the order parameter twisted by opposite angles $\pm φ/2$ at the two ends there is an emergent complex $Z_2$ soliton mode carrying fractional spin number $φ/(2π)$ if there is only one pairing branch. We demonstrate that in finite systems of length $L$, the spin density for one pairing branch in the presence of a single soliton mode consists of two terms, a localized spin density profile carrying fractional quantum number $φ/(2π)$, and a uniform background $-φ/(2πL)$. The latter one vanishes in the thermodynamic limit leaving a single soliton mode carrying fractional excitation, however it is essential to keep the total quantum number conserved in finite systems. This analysis is also applicable to other systems with fractional quantum numbers, thus provides a mechanism to understand the compatibility of the emergence of fractional charges with the integral quantization of charges in a finite system. For the $p$-wave pairing superfluid with the chemical potential interpolating between the strong and weak pairing phases, the $Z_2$ soliton is associated with a Majorana zero mode. By introducing the dimension density, we argue that the Majorana zero mode may be understood as an object with 1/2 dimension of the single particle Hilbert space. We conjecture a connection of the dimension density of one-dimensional solitons with the quantum dimension of topological excitations.

Quantum phase transition and destruction of Kondo effect in pressurized SmB6

SmB6 is a promising candidate material that promises to elucidate the connection between strong correlations and topological electronic states, which is a major challenge in condensed matter physics. The electron correlations are responsible for the development of multiple gaps in SmB6, whose elucidation is sorely needed. Here we do so by studying the evolutions of the gaps and other corresponding behaviors under pressure. Our measurements of the valence, Hall effect and electrical resistivity clearly identify the gap which is associated with the bulk Kondo hybridization and, moreover, uncover a pressure-induced quantum phase transition from the putative topological Kondo insulating state to a Fermi-liquid state at ~4 GPa. We provide the evidences for the transition by a jump of inverse Hall coefficient, a diverging tendency of the electron-electron scattering coefficient and, thereby, a destruction of the Kondo entanglement in the ground state. These effects take place in a mixed-valence background. Our results raise the new prospect for studying topological electronic states in quantum critical materials settings.

Domain imaging across the magneto-structural phase transition in Fe$_{1+y}$Te

The investigation of the magnetic phase transitions in the parent compounds of Fe-based superconductors is regarded essential for an understanding of the pairing mechanism in the related superconducting compounds. Even though the chemical and electronic properties of these materials are often strongly inhomogeneous on a nanometer length scale, studies of the magnetic phase transitions using spatially resolved experimental techniques are still scarce. Here, we present a real space spin-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy investigation of the surface of Fe$_{1+y}$Te single crystals with different excess Fe content, $y$, which are continuously driven through the magnetic phase transition. For Fe$_{1.08}$Te, the transition into the low-temperature monoclinic commensurate antiferromagnetic phase is accompanied by the sudden emergence of ordering into four rotational domains with different orientations of the monoclinic lattice and of the antiferromagnetic order, showing how structural and magnetic order are intertwined. In the low-temperature phase of Fe$_{1.12}$Te one type of the domain boundaries disappears, and the transition into the paramagnetic phase gets rather broad, which is assigned to the formation of a mixture of orthorhombic and monoclinic phases.

Reply to the comment of P. Lipavsky

The critics of P. Lipavsky on the derivation of conservation laws including gradient corrections is refuted since his counterexample is based on a mathematical error. Instead, the derived conservation laws for density, momentum and energy remain valid even without using the objected relation. Only for the entropy local terms are missing which vanish under integration.

Mesonic excited states of magnetic monopoles in quantum spin ice

Spin ice magnetic monopoles are fractionalized emergent excitations in a class of frustrated magnets called spin ices. The classical spin ice model has an extensive number of ground state spin configurations, whereas magnetic monopoles can be thought of as the endpoints of string operators applied to these ground states. Introducing quantum fluctuations into the model induces monopoles with dynamics, which would normally lift the degeneracy of the two-monopole energy level at the linear order of the perturbation. Contrary to this expectation, we find that quantum fluctuations in the form of a locally transverse field term partially preserve the extensive degeneracy of the monopole pairs up to the much weaker splitting of the background monopole-free spin ice configurations. Each of these approximately degenerate excited states, termed mesons, can be represented as a bound monopole-antimonopole pair delocalized in a classical spin ice background.

Tensor networks as path integral geometry

In the context of a quantum critical spin chain whose low energy physics corresponds to a conformal field theory (CFT), it was recently demonstrated [A. Milsted G. Vidal, arXiv:1805.12524] that certain classes of tensor networks used for numerically describing the ground state of the spin chain can also be used to implement (discrete, approximate versions of) conformal transformations on the lattice. In the continuum, the same conformal transformations can be implemented through a CFT path integral on some curved spacetime. Based on this observation, in this paper we propose to interpret the tensor networks themselves as a path integrals on curved spacetime. This perspective assigns (a discrete, approximate version of) a geometry to the tensor network, namely that of the underlying curved spacetime.

Topological solid phase in a quantum dimer model

We present an example for the phase transition between a topological non-trivial solid phase and a trivial solid phase in the quantum dimer model(QDM) on triangular lattice. Such a transition is beyond the Landau's paradigm of phase transition. We have characterized such a transition with the topological entanglement entropy(TEE) of the system, which is found to change from $γ=\ln 2$ in the topological solid phase to zero in the trivial solid phase, through a pronounced peak around the transition point. We also calculated the correlation function of the vison excitation in the QDM and find that the vison condensate develops right at the topological transition point. These results imply that the topological order and the related fractionalized excitation can coexist with conventional symmetry breaking order.
