Matter wave propagation above a step potential within the cubic-nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We analyze the matter wave transmission above a step potential within the framework of the cubic-nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We present a comprehensive analysis of the corresponding stationary problem based on an exact second-order nonlinear differential equation for the probability density. The exact solution of the problem in terms of the Jacobi elliptic sn-function is presented and analyzed. Qualitatively distinct types of wave propagation picture are classified depending on the input parameters of the system. Analyzing the 2D space of involved dimensionless parameters, the nonlinearity and the reflecting potential's height/depth given in the units of the chemical potential, we show that the region of the parameters that does not sustain restricted solutions is given by a closed curve consisting of a segment of an elliptic curve and two line intervals. We show that there exists a specific singular point, belonging to the elliptic curve, which causes a jump from one evolution scenario to another one. The position of this point is determined and the peculiarities of the evolution scenarios (oscillatory, non-oscillatory and diverging) for all the allowed regions of involved parameters are described and analyzed in detail.

Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory and the Real-Time Dynamics of Fermi Superfluids

I describe the Time-Dependent Superfluid Local Density Approximation, which is an adiabatic extension of the Density Functional Theory to superfluid Fermi systems and their real-time dynamics. This new theoretical framework has been applied to describe a number of phenomena in cold atomic gases and nuclear collective motion: excitation of the Higgs modes in strongly interacting Fermi superfluids, generation of quantized vortices, crossing and reconnection of vortices, excitation of the superflow at velocities above the critical velocity, excitation of quantum shock waves and domain walls in the collisions of superfluid atomic clouds, excitation of collective states in nuclei.

Dissipation induced macroscopic entanglement in an open optical lattice

We introduce a method for the dissipative preparation of strongly correlated quantum states of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice via localized particle loss. The interplay of dissipation and interactions enables different types of dynamics. This ushers a new line of experimental methods to maintain the coherence of a Bose-Einstein condensate or to deterministically generate macroscopically entangled quantum states.

Dynamic freezing of strongly correlated ultracold bosons

We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of ultracold bosons in an optical lattice with a time dependent hopping amplitude J(t)=J_0 +δJ \cos(ωt) which takes the system from a superfluid phase near the Mott-superfluid transition (J= J_0+δJ) to a Mott phase (J=J_0-δJ) and back through a quantum critical point (J=J_c) and demonstrate dynamic freezing of the boson wavefunction at specific values of ω. At these values, the wavefunction overlap F (defect density P=1-F) approaches unity (zero). We provide a qualitative explanation of the freezing phenomenon, show it's robustness against quantum fluctuations and the presence of a trap, compute residual energy and superfluid order parameter for such dynamics, and suggest experiments to test our theory.

Berry curvature effects in the Bloch oscillations of a quantum particle under a strong (synthetic) magnetic field

We study the magnetic Bloch oscillations performed by a quantum particle moving in a two-dimensional lattice in the presence of a strong (synthetic) magnetic field and a uniform force. An elementary derivation of the Berry curvature effect on the semiclassical trajectory is given as well as an explicit connection to the classical Hall effect in the continuum limit. Perspectives to observe these effects in optical systems using synthetic gauge fields for photons are discussed.

Matter-wave dark solitons and their excitation spectra in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We present three types of dark solitons in quasi-one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates. Among these families, two are always stable, while the third one is only stable sufficiently close to the linear regime. The solitons' excitation spectra reveal the potential existence of a second anomalous mode. While the first such mode describes the soliton oscillatory motion in a parabolic trap, the second, when present, reflects the double well structure of the underlying single-particle spectrum. This novel mode results in moving density stripes in the vicinity of the soliton core, or in an out-of-phase oscillation of the constituent components, with little effect on the nearly stationary striped total density of the composite soliton.

Hawking radiation in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

We consider a simple realization of an event horizon in the flow of a one-dimensional two-component Bose-Einstein condensate. Such a condensate has two types of quasiparticles; In the system we study, one corresponds to density fluctuations and the other to polarization fluctuations. We treat the case where a horizon occurs only for one type of quasiparticles (the polarization ones). We study the one- and two-body signal associated to the analog of spontaneous Hawking radiation and demonstrate by explicit computation that it consists only in the emission of polarization waves. We discuss the experimental consequences of the present results in the domain of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and also for the physics of exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities.

Periodic waves in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive interactions between atoms

We consider periodic waves in miscible two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive nonlinear interactions constants. Exact one-phase solution is found for the case when all these constants are equal to each other (i.e., for Manakov limit). New types of nonlinear polarization waves are considered in detail. The connection of the solutions found with experimentally observed periodic structures in two-component condensates is discussed.

Entanglement in dissipative dynamics of identical particles

Entanglement of identical massive particles recently gained attention, because of its relevance in highly controllable systems, e.g. ultracold gases. It accounts for correlations among modes instead of particles, providing a different paradigm for quantum information. We prove that the entanglement of almost all states rarely vanishes in the presence of noise, and analyse the most relevant noise in ultracold gases: dephasing and particle losses. Furthermore, when the particle number increases, the entanglement decay can turn from exponential into algebraic.

Subrecoil cavity cooling towards degeneracy: A numerical study

We present a detailed numerical analysis of the temperature limit and timescale of cavity cooling of a dilute gas in the quantum regime for particles and light. For a cavity with a linewidth smaller than the recoil frequency efficient cooling towards quantum degeneracy is facilitated by applying a tailored sequence of laser pulses transferring the particles towards lower momenta. Two-particle Monte Carlo wave function simulations reveal strongly improved cooling properties for a ring versus a standing-wave geometry. Distinct quantum correlations and cooling limits for bosons and fermions demonstrate quantum statistical effects. In particular, in ring cavities the photon-mediated long-range interaction favours momentum-space pairing of bosons, while fermion pairs exhibit anti-correlated or uncorrelated momenta. The results are consistent with recent experiments and give encouraging prospects to achieve sufficient conditions for the condensation of a wide class of polarisable particles via cavity cooling.

Polariton condensation with saturable molecules dressed by vibrational modes

Polaritons, mixed light-matter quasiparticles, undergo a transition to a condensed, macroscopically coherent state at low temperatures or high densities. Recent experiments show that coupling light to organic molecules inside a microcavity allows condensation at room temperature. The molecules act as saturable absorbers with transitions dressed by molecular vibrational modes. Motivated by this we calculate the phase diagram and spectrum of a modified Tavis-Cummings model, describing vibrationally dressed two-level systems, coupled to a cavity mode. Coupling to vibrational modes can induce re-entrance, i.e. a normal-condensed-normal sequence with decreasing temperature and can drive the transition first order.

A faster scaling in acceleration-sensitive atom interferometers

Atom interferometers have been used to measure acceleration with at best a $T^2$ scaling in sensitivity as the interferometer time $T$ is increased. This limits the sensitivity to acceleration which is theoretically achievable by these configurations for a given frequency of acceleration. We predict and experimentally measure the acceleration-sensitive phase shift of a large-momentum-transfer atom interferometer based upon Bloch oscillations. Using this novel interferometric scheme we demonstrate an improved scaling of sensitivity which will scale as $T^3$. This enhanced scaling will allow an increase in achievable sensitivity for any given frequency of an oscillatory acceleration signal, which will be of particular use for inertial and navigational sensors, and proposed gravitational wave detectors. A straight forward extension should allow a $T^4$ scaling in acceleration sensitivity.

Steerable optical tweezers for ultracold atom studies

We report on the implementation of an optical tweezer system for controlled transport of ultracold atoms along a narrow, static confinement channel. The tweezer system is based on high-efficiency acousto-optical deflectors and offers two-dimensional control over beam position. This opens up the possibility for tracking the transport channel when shuttling atomic clouds along the guide, forestalling atom spilling. Multiple clouds can be tracked independently by time-shared tweezer beams addressing individual sites in the channel. The deflectors are controlled using a multichannel direct digital synthesizer, which receives instructions on a sub-microsecond time scale from a field-programmable gate array. Using the tweezer system, we demonstrate sequential binary splitting of an ultracold $\rm^{87}Rb$ cloud into $2^5$ clouds.

Unraveling the emergence of quantum state designs in systems with symmetry

Quantum state designs, by enabling an efficient sampling of random quantum states, play a quintessential role in devising and benchmarking various quantum protocols with broad applications ranging from circuit designs to black hole physics. Symmetries, on the other hand, are expected to reduce the randomness of a state. Despite being ubiquitous, the effects of symmetry on quantum state designs remain an outstanding question. The recently introduced projected ensemble framework generates efficient approximate state $t$-designs by hinging on projective measurements and many-body quantum chaos. In this work, we examine the emergence of state designs from the random generator states exhibiting symmetries. Leveraging on translation symmetry, we analytically establish a sufficient condition for the measurement basis leading to the state $t$-designs. Then, by making use of the trace distance measure, we numerically investigate the convergence to the designs. Subsequently, we inspect the violation of the sufficient condition to identify bases that fail to converge. We further demonstrate the emergence of state designs in a physical system by studying the dynamics of a chaotic tilted field Ising chain with translation symmetry. We find faster convergence of the trace distance during the early time evolution in comparison to the cases when the symmetry is broken. To delineate the general applicability of our results, we extend our analysis to other symmetries. We expect our findings to pave the way for further exploration of deep thermalization and equilibration of closed and open quantum many-body systems.

Theory of Bose-Einstein Condensation of Light in a Microcavity

A theory of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of light in a dye microcavity is developed. The photon polarization degeneracy and the interaction between dye molecules and photons in all of the cavity modes are taken into account. The theory goes beyond the grand canonical approximation and allows one to determine the statistical properties of the photon gas for all numbers of dye molecules and photons at all temperatures, thus describing the microscopic, mesoscopic, and macroscopic light BEC from a general perspective. A universal relation between the degrees of second-order coherence for the photon condensate and the polarized photon condensate is obtained. The photon Bose-Einstein condensate can be used as a new source of nonclassical light.

Aspects of Superfluid Cold Atomic Gases in Optical Lattices

We review our studies on Bose and Fermi superfluids of cold atomic gases in optical lattices at zero temperature. Especially, we focus on superfluid Fermi gases along the crossover between the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) states, which enable us to study the Bose and the Fermi superfluids in a unified point of view. We discuss basic static and long-wavelength properties (such as the equation of state, incompressibility, and effective mass), energetic stability, and energy band structures of the superfluid Fermi gases in an optical lattice periodic along one spatial direction. The periodic potential causes pairs of atoms to be strongly bound, and this can affect the static and long-wavelength properties and the stability of the superflow. Regarding the band structure, a peculiar loop structure called "swallowtail" can appear in superfluid Fermi gases and in the Bose case, but the mechanism of emergence in the Fermi case is very different from that in bosonic case. Other quantum phases that the cold atomic gases in optical lattices can show are also briefly discussed based on their roles as quantum simulators of Hubbard models.

Self-consistent approach for Bose-condensed atoms in optical lattices

Bose atoms in optical lattices are considered at low temperatures and weak interactions, when Bose-Einstein condensate is formed. A self-consistent approach, based on the use of a representative statistical ensemble, is employed, ensuring a gapless spectrum of collective excitations and the validity of conservation laws. In order to show that the approach is applicable to both weak and tight binding, the problem is treated in the Bloch as well as in the Wannier representations. Both these ways result in similar expressions that are compared for the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogolubov approximation. A convenient general formula for the superfluid fraction of atoms in an optical lattice is derived.

Energy spectrum and phase diagrams of two-sublattice hard-core boson model

The energy spectrum, spectral density and phase diagrams have been obtained for two-sublattice hard-core boson model in frames of random phase approximation approach. Reconstruction of boson spectrum at the change of temperature, chemical potential and energy difference between local positions in sublattices is studied. The phase diagrams illustrating the regions of existence of a normal phase which can be close to Mott-insulator (MI) or charge-density (CDW) phases as well as the phase with the Bose-Einstein condensate (SF phase) are built.
