Universal electric-field-driven resistive transition in narrow-gap Mott insulators

One of today's most exciting research frontier and challenge in condensed matter physics is known as Mottronics, whose goal is to incorporate strong correlation effects into the realm of electronics. In fact, taming the Mott insulator-to-metal transition (IMT), which is driven by strong electronic correlation effects, holds the promise of a commutation speed set by a quantum transition, and with negligible power dissipation. In this context, one possible route to control the Mott transition is to electrostatically dope the systems using strong dielectrics, in FET-like devices. Another possibility is through resistive switching, that is, to induce the insulator-to-metal transition by strong electric pulsing. This action brings the correlated system far from equilibrium, rendering the exact treatment of the problem a difficult challenge. Here, we show that existing theoretical predictions of the off-equilibrium manybody problem err by orders of magnitudes, when compared to experiments that we performed on three prototypical narrow gap Mott systems V2-xCrxO3, NiS2-xSex and GaTa4Se8, and which also demonstrate a striking universality of this Mott resistive transition (MRT). We then introduce and numerically study a model based on key theoretically known physical features of the Mott phenomenon in the Hubbard model. We find that our model predictions are in very good agreement with the observed universal MRT and with a non-trivial timedelay electric pulsing experiment, which we also report. Our study demonstrates that the MRT can be associated to a dynamically directed avalanche.

Bandgap Controlling of the Oxygen-Vacancy-Induced Two-Dimensional Electron Gas in SrTiO3

We report very large bandgap enhancement in SrTiO3 (STO) films (fabricated by pulsed laser deposition below 800 °C), which can be up to 20% greater than the bulk value, depending on the deposition temperature. The origin is comprehensively investigated and finally attributed to Sr/Ti antisite point defects, supported by density functional theory calculations. More importantly, the bandgap enhancement can be utilized to tailor the electronic and magnetic phases of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in STO-based interface systems. For example, the oxygen-vacancy-induced 2DEG (2DEG-V) at the interface between amorphous LaAlO3 and STO films is more localized and the ferromagnetic order in the STO-film-based 2DEG-V can be clearly seen from low-temperature magnetotransport measurements. This opens an attractive path to tailor electronic, magnetic and optical properties of STO-based oxide interface systems under intensive focus in the oxide electronics community. Meanwhile, our study provides key insight into the origin of the fundamental issue that STO films are difficult to be doped into the fully metallic state by oxygen vacancies.

Oxygen deficiency induced suppression of JT-distortion and stabilization of chargeordering in La0.2Sr0.8MnO3-d

Structural phase transition studies employing low-temperature transmission electron microscopy, and low-temperature x-ray diffraction have been carried out on nearly stoichiometric (δ=0.01) and off-stoichiometric (δ=0.12) versions of La0.2Sr0.8MnO3-δ manganite. The nearly stoichiometric La0.2Sr0.8MnO3-δ under goes a cubic to Jahn-Teller distorted C-type antiferromagnetic tetragonal phase-transition at 260K. For off-stoichiometric La0.2Sr0.8MnO3-δ the Jahn-Teller distorted tetragonal phase transition gets totally suppressed and the basic perovskite lattice remains cubic but shows a charge ordered phase. Stabilization of charge ordered phase in the absence of cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion has been attributed to coulomb-repulsion and Hunds coupling energy. The off-stoichiometric sample shows characteristically different physical properties. This has been realized through transport, magnetic and calorimetric measurements. A smooth crossover from variable range hopping transport to power-law dependence of resistivity (ρ) on temperature (T) i.e. ρ=C.T-α has been realized. This has been attributed to multistep inelastic tunneling through channels involving localized states around oxygen vacancy sites.

Bulk Rashba spin splitting and Dirac surface state in $p$-type (Bi$_{0.9}$Sb$_{0.1})_2$Se$_3$ single crystal

We report bulk Rashba spin splitting (RSS) and associated Dirac surface state in (Bi$_{0.9}$Sb$_{0.1})_2$Se$_3$, exhibiting dominant $p$-type conductivity. We argue from the synchrotron diffraction studies that origin of the bulk RSS is due to a structural transition to a non-centrosymmetric $R3m$ phase below $\sim$ 30 K. The Shubnikov-de Haas Van (SdH) oscillations observed in the magnetoresistance curves at low temperature and the Landau level fan diagram, as obtained from these oscillations, confirm the presence of nontrivial Dirac surface state. The magnetization data at low temperature exhibit substantial orbital magnetization consistent with the bulk RSS. The existance of both the bulk RSS and Dirac surface states are confirmed by first principles density functional theory calculations. Coexistence of orbital magnetism, bulk RSS, and Dirac surface state is unique for $p$-type (Bi$_{0.9}$Sb$_{0.1})_2$Se$_3$, making it an ideal candidate for spintronic applications.

Hubbard-corrected DFT energy functionals: the LDA+U description of correlated systems

The aim of this review article is to assess the descriptive capabilities of the Hubbard-rooted LDA+U method and to clarify the conditions under which it can be expected to be most predictive. The paper illustrates the theoretical foundation of LDA+U and prototypical applications to the study of correlated materials, discusses the most relevant approximations used in its formulation, and makes a comparison with other approaches also developed for similar purposes. Open "issues" of the method are also discussed, including the calculation of the electronic couplings (the Hubbard U), the precise expression of the corrective functional and the possibility to use LDA+U for other classes of materials. The second part of the article presents recent extensions to the method and illustrates the significant improvements they have obtained in the description of several classes of different systems. The conclusive section finally discusses possible future developments of LDA+U to further enlarge its predictive power and its range of applicability.

Spin-Chain Incipient Magnetocaloric Effect and Rare-Earth Controlled Switching in the Haldane-Chain System, R2BaNiO5

We have experimentally investigated the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of a prototype spin-frustrated one-dimensional spin-chain system, the famous Haldane-chain system, R2BaNiO5 (R = Nd, Gd, Er, Dy). The significant MCE is observed far above long-range ordering, even in the paramagnetic region, which is attributed to the change in magnetic entropy due to short-range spin correlation arising from (low-dimensional) magnetic frustration. Such a spin-chain incipient MCE above long-range ordering is rarely reported. Interestingly, multiple magnetocaloric switching from conventional to inverse MCE (and vice versa) are observed below long-range magnetic ordering, as a function of temperature and magnetic field, for the R = Nd, Dy, and Er members. However, such MCE switching is absent in the Gd member, which is an S-state atom (orbital moment L = 0). Our systematic investigation of this series demonstrates that the interplay between crystal-electric field (CEF), strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and rare earth anisotropy of R-ions play an important role in spin reorientation, leading to multiple MCE switching due to intriguing changes in magnetic and lattice entropy. The maximum change of entropy for Er, Gd, Dy and Nd is 7.8, 6.8, 4.0 and 1.0 J Kg-1 K-1 respectively. Our study presents a pathway for tuning MCE switching and the MCE effect over large temperature regions in d-f coupled spin-frustrated and spin-chain oxide systems.

Magnetic Catalysis: A Review

We give an overview of the magnetic catalysis phenomenon. In the framework of quantum field theory, magnetic catalysis is broadly defined as an enhancement of dynamical symmetry breaking by an external magnetic field. We start from a brief discussion of spontaneous symmetry breaking and the role of a magnetic field in its a dynamics. This is followed by a detailed presentation of the essential features of the phenomenon. In particular, we emphasize that the dimensional reduction plays a profound role in the pairing dynamics in a magnetic field. Using the general nature of underlying physics and its robustness with respect to interaction types and model content, we argue that magnetic catalysis is a universal and model-independent phenomenon. In support of this claim, we show how magnetic catalysis is realized in various models with short-range and long-range interactions. We argue that the general nature of the phenomenon implies a wide range of potential applications: from certain types of solid state systems to models in cosmology, particle and nuclear physics. We finish the review with general remarks about magnetic catalysis and an outlook for future research.

Quantum Renormalization Group and Holography

Quantum renormalization group scheme provides a microscopic understanding of holography through a general mapping between the beta functions of underlying quantum field theories and the holographic actions in the bulk. We show that the Einstein gravity emerges as a long wavelength holographic description for a matrix field theory which has no other operator with finite scaling dimension except for the energy-momentum tensor. We also point out that holographic actions for general large N matrix field theories respect the inversion symmetry along the radial direction in the bulk if the beta functions of single-trace operators are gradient flows with respect to the target space metric set by the beta functions of double-trace operators.

Conductivity of Strongly Coupled Striped Superconductor

We study the conductivity of a strongly coupled striped superconductor using gauge/gravity duality (holography). The study is done analytically, in the large modulation regime. We show that the optical conductivity is inhomogeneous but isotropic at low temperatures. Near but below the critical temperature, we calculate the conductivity analytically at small frequency ω, and find it to be both inhomogeneous and anisotropic. The anisotropy is imaginary and scales like 1/ω. We also calculate analytically the speed of the second sound and the thermodynamic susceptibility.

Holographic entanglement entropy in imbalanced superconductors

We study the behavior of holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) for imbalanced holographic superconductors. We employ a numerical approach to consider the robust case of fully back-reacted gravity system. The hairy black hole solution is found by using our numerical scheme. Then it is used to compute the HEE for the superconducting case. The cases we study show that in presence of a mismatch between two chemical potentials, below the critical temperature, superconducting phase has a lower HEE in comparison to the AdS-Reissner-Nordstrom black hole phase. Interestingly, the effects of chemical imbalance are different in the contexts of black hole and superconducting phases. For black hole, HEE increases with increasing imbalance parameter while it behaves oppositely for the superconducting phase. The implications of these results are discussed.

Thermodynamics, gravitational anomalies and cones

By studying the Euclidean partition function on a cone, we argue that pure and mixed gravitational anomalies generate a "Casimir momentum" which manifests itself as parity violating coefficients in the hydrodynamic stress tensor and charge current. The coefficients generated by these anomalies enter at a lower order in the hydrodynamic gradient expansion than would be naively expected. In 1+1 dimensions, the gravitational anomaly affects coefficients at zeroth order in the gradient expansion. The mixed anomaly in 3+1 dimensions controls the value of coefficients at first order in the gradient expansion.

Lifshitz Field Theories at Non-Zero Temperature, Hydrodynamics and Gravity

We consider a covariant formulation of field theories with Lifshitz scaling, and analyze the energy-momentum tensor and the scale symmetry Ward identity. We derive the equation of state and the ideal Lifshitz hydrodynamics in agreement with arXiv:1304.7481, where they were determined by using thermodynamics and symmetry properties. We construct the charged ideal Lifshitz hydrodynamics in the generating functional framework as well as in the gravitational holographic dual description. At the first viscous order, an analysis of the entropy current reveals two additional transport coefficients (one dissipative and one dissipationless) compared to the neutral case, contributing to the charge current and to the asymmetric part of the energy-momentum tensor.

Three-Dimensional Superconformal Field Theory on Conic Space as Hologram of Charged Topological Black Hole

We construct three-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric conformal field theories on conic spaces. Built upon the fact that the partition function depends solely on the Reeb vector of the Killing vector, we propose that holographic dual of these theories are four-dimensional, supersymmetric charged topological black holes. With the supersymmetry localization technique, we study conserved supercharges, free energy, and Renyi entropy. At planar large N limit, we demonstrate perfect agreement between the superconformal field theories and the supersymmetric charged topological black holes.

Holographic Geometries of one-dimensional gapped quantum systems from Tensor Network States

We investigate a recent conjecture connecting the AdS/CFT correspondence and entanglement renormalization tensor network states (MERA). The proposal interprets the tensor connectivity of the MERA states associated to quantum many body systems at criticality, in terms of a dual holographic geometry which accounts for the qualitative aspects of the entanglement and the correlations in these systems. In this work, some generic features of the entanglement entropy and the two point functions in the ground state of one dimensional gapped systems are considered through a tensor network state. The tensor network is builded up as an hybrid composed by a finite number of MERA layers and a matrix product state (MPS) acting as a cap layer. Using the holographic formula for the entanglement entropy, here it is shown that an asymptotically AdS metric can be associated to the hybrid MERA-MPS state. The metric is defined by a function that manages the growth of the minimal surfaces near the capped region of the geometry. Namely, it is shown how the behaviour of the entanglement entropy and the two point correlators in the tensor network, remains consistent with a geometric computation which only depends on this function. From these observations, an explicit connection between the entanglement structure of the tensor network and the function which defines the geometry is provided.

Monopole Operators in $U(1)$ Chern-Simons-Matter Theories

We study monopole operators at the infrared fixed points of $U(1)$ Chern-Simons-matter theories (QED$_3$, scalar QED$_3$, ${\cal N} =1$ SQED$_3$, and ${\cal N} = 2$ SQED$_3$) with $N$ matter flavors and Chern-Simons level $k$. We work in the limit where both $N$ and $k$ are taken to be large with $κ= k/N$ fixed. In this limit, we extract information about the low-lying spectrum of monopole operators from evaluating the $S^2 \times S^1$ partition function in the sector where the $S^2$ is threaded by magnetic flux $4 πq$. At leading order in $N$, we find a large number of monopole operators with equal scaling dimensions and a wide range of spins and flavor symmetry irreducible representations. In two simple cases, we deduce how the degeneracy in the scaling dimensions is broken by the $1/N$ corrections. For QED$_3$ at $κ=0$, we provide conformal bootstrap evidence that this near-degeneracy is in fact maintained to small values of $N$. For ${\cal N} = 2$ SQED$_3$, we find that the lowest dimension monopole operator is generically non-BPS.

Thermal Mass and Plasmino for Strongly Interacting Fermions

We investigate fermion self energy problem in the strongly coupled dense medium in holographic approach. By working out bottom up models as well as top down ones we showed that vanishing thermal mass and non-existence of temperature generated plasmino mode is the universal feature of the strongly interacting fermion system. We identified that the dual of the bulk Rashiba effect, which was recently found by the Herzog et.al, is the presence of the plasmino mode generated by the density.

Hydrodynamics of cold holographic matter

We show that at any temperature, the low-energy (with respect to the chemical potential) collective excitations of the transverse components of the energy-momentum tensor and the global U(1) current in the field theory dual to the planar RN-AdS4 black hole are simply those of hydrodynamics. That is, hydrodynamics is applicable even at energy scales much greater than the temperature. It is applicable even at zero temperature. Specifically, we find that there is always a diffusion mode with diffusion constant proportional to the ratio of entropy density to energy density. At low temperatures, the leading order momentum and temperature dependences of the dispersion relation of this mode are controlled by the dimension of an operator in the thermal CFT1 dual to the near-horizon Schwarzschild-AdS2 geometry.
