On the surface of superfluids

Developing on a recent work on localized bubbles of ordinary relativistic fluids, we study the comparatively richer leading order surface physics of relativistic superfluids, coupled to an arbitrary stationary background metric and gauge field in $3+1$ and $2+1$ dimensions. The analysis is performed with the help of a Euclidean effective action in one lower dimension, written in terms of the superfluid Goldstone mode, the shape-field (characterizing the surface of the superfluid bubble) and the background fields. We find new terms in the ideal order constitutive relations of the superfluid surface, in both the parity-even and parity-odd sectors, with the corresponding transport coefficients entirely fixed in terms of the first order bulk transport coefficients. Some bulk transport coefficients even enter and modify the surface thermodynamics. In the process, we also evaluate the stationary first order parity-odd bulk currents in $2+1$ dimensions, which follows from four independent terms in the superfluid effective action in that sector. In the second part of the paper, we extend our analysis to stationary surfaces in $3+1$ dimensional Galilean superfluids via the null reduction of null superfluids in $4+1$ dimensions. The ideal order constitutive relations in the Galilean case also exhibit some new terms similar to their relativistic counterparts. Finally, in the relativistic context, we turn on slow but arbitrary time dependence and answer some of the key questions regarding the time-dependent dynamics of the shape-field using the second law of thermodynamics. A linearized fluctuation analysis in $2+1$ dimensions about a toy equilibrium configuration reveals some new surface modes, including parity-odd ones. Our framework can be easily applied to model more general interfaces between distinct fluid-phases.

Conjecture on the Butterfly Velocity across a Quantum Phase Transition

We study an anisotropic holographic bottom-up model displaying a quantum phase transition (QPT) between a topologically trivial insulator and a non-trivial Weyl semimetal phase. We analyze the properties of quantum chaos in the quantum critical region. We do not find any universal property of the Butterfly velocity across the QPT. In particular it turns out to be either maximized or minimized at the quantum critical point depending on the direction of propagation. We observe that instead of the butterfly velocity, it is the dimensionless information screening length that is always maximized at a quantum critical point. We argue that the null-energy condition (NEC) is the underlying reason for the upper bound, which now is just a simple combination of the number of spatial dimensions and the anisotropic scaling parameter.

Path-Integral Complexity for Perturbed CFTs

In this work, we formulate a path-integral optimization for two dimensional conformal field theories perturbed by relevant operators. We present several evidences how this optimization mechanism works, based on calculations in free field theories as well as general arguments of RG flows in field theories. Our optimization is performed by minimizing the path-integral complexity functional that depends on the metric and also on the relevant couplings. Then, we compute the optimal metric perturbatively and find that it agrees with the time slice of the hyperbolic metric perturbed by a scalar field in the AdS/CFT correspondence. Last but not the least, we estimate contributions to complexity from relevant perturbations.

A study of time reversal symmetry of abelian anyons

We perform a study of time reversal symmetry of abelian anyons $\mathcal{A}$ in 2+1 dimensions, in the spin structure independent cases. We will find the importance of the group $\mathcal{C}$ of time-reversal-symmetric anyons modulo anyons composed from an anyon and its time reversal. Possible choices of local Kramers degeneracy are given by quadratic refinements of the braiding phases of $\mathcal{C}$, and the anomaly is then given by the Arf invariant of the chosen quadratic refinement. We also give a concrete study of the cases when $|\mathcal{A}|$ is odd or $\mathcal{A}=(\mathbb{Z}_2)^N$.

Flavors of entanglement

We employ holography to investigate Liu-Mezei renormalization group monotones in conformal field theories influenced by massive flavor degrees of freedom. We examine the entanglement entropy of a spherical subregion in three holographic field theories - $\mathcal{N}=1$ Klebanov-Witten theory, $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory, and ABJM theory - with fundamental flavor. The gravity dual of massive unquenched flavor is described by dynamical D-branes, and we solve their backreaction in the smeared approximation. We compute entanglement entropy using the Ryu-Takayanagi formula in these backreacted geometries. Our findings indicate that the Liu-Mezei A- and F-functions decrease monotonically to leading order in the number of flavors across all examples. Additionally, we calculate the leading flavor contribution to entanglement entropy using an alternative probe brane method that does not require knowledge of backreaction in the bulk geometries. These results consistently match with backreacted calculations in all cases, assuming omission of a specific IR boundary term stemming from a total derivative.

Monopoles in 2+1-dimensional conformal field theories with global U(1) symmetry

In 2+1-dimensional conformal field theories with a global U(1) symmetry, monopoles can be introduced through a background gauge field that couples to the U(1) conserved current. We use the state-operator correspondence to calculate scaling dimensions of such monopoles. We obtain the next-to-leading term in the 1/N_b expansion of the Wilson-Fisher fixed point in the theory of N_b complex bosons.

Vacuum Instability in Electric Fields via AdS/CFT: Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian and Planckian Thermalization

We analyze vacuum instability of strongly coupled gauge theories in a constant electric field using AdS/CFT correspondence. The model is the N=2 1-flavor supersymmetric large N_c QCD in the strong 't Hooft coupling limit. We calculate the Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian L(E), which encodes the nonlinear response and the quantum decay rate of the vacuum in a background electric field E, from the complex D-brane action in AdS/CFT. We find that the decay rate given by Im L(E) becomes nonzero above a critical electric field set by the confining force between quarks. A large-E expansion of Im L(E) is found to coincide with that of the Schwinger effects in QED, replacing its electron mass by the confining force. Then, the time-dependent response of the system in a strong electric field is solved non-perturbatively, and we observe a universal thermalization at a shortest timescale "Planckian thermalization time" t ~ 1/T ~ E^{-1/2}. Here, T is an effective temperature which quarks feel in the nonequilibrium state with nonzero electric current, calculated in AdS/CFT as a Hawking temperature. Stronger electric fields accelerate the thermalization, and for a realistic value of the electric field in RHIC experiment, we obtain t ~ 1 [fm/c], which is consistent with the believed value.

Recurrence Relations for Finite-Temperature Correlators via AdS$_{2}$/CFT$_{1}$

This note is aimed at presenting a new algebraic approach to momentum-space correlators in conformal field theory. As an illustration we present a new Lie-algebraic method to compute frequency-space two-point functions for charged scalar operators of CFT$_{1}$ dual to AdS$_{2}$ black hole with constant background electric field. Our method is based on the real-time prescription of AdS/CFT correspondence, Euclideanization of AdS$_{2}$ black hole and projective unitary representations of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R}) \oplus \mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})$. We derive novel recurrence relations for Euclidean CFT$_{1}$ two-point functions, which are exactly solvable and completely determine the frequency- and charge-dependences of two-point functions. Wick-rotating back to Lorentzian signature, we obtain retarded and advanced CFT$_{1}$ two-point functions that are consistent with the known results.

The geometry of antiferromagnetic spin chains

We construct spin chains that describe relativistic sigma-models in the continuum limit, using symplectic geometry as a main tool. The target space can be an arbitrary complex flag manifold, and we find universal expressions for the metric and theta-term.

Commuting Pauli Hamiltonians as maps between free modules

We study unfrustrated spin Hamiltonians that consist of commuting tensor products of Pauli matrices. Assuming translation-invariance, a family of Hamiltonians that belong to the same phase of matter is described by a map between modules over the translation-group algebra, so homological methods are applicable. In any dimension every point-like charge appears as a vertex of a fractal operator, and can be isolated with energy barrier at most logarithmic in the separation distance. For a topologically ordered system in three dimensions, there must exist a point-like nontrivial charge. If the ground-state degeneracy is upper bounded by a constant independent of the system size, then the topological charges in three dimensions always appear at the end points of string operators. A connection between the ground state degeneracy and the number of points on an algebraic set is discussed. Tools to handle local Clifford unitary transformations are given.

Population trapping and inversion in ultracold Fermi gases by excitation of the optical lattice - Non-equilibrium Floquet-Keldysh description

A gas of ultracold interacting quantum degenerate Fermions is considered in a three dimensional optical lattice which is externally modulated in the fre- quency and the amplitude. This theoretical study utilizes the Keldysh formalism to account for the system being out of thermodynamical equilibrium. A dynamical mean field theory, extended to non-equilibrium, is presented to calculate characteristic quantities such as the local density of states and the non-equilibrium distribution function. A dynamics Franz-Keldysh splitting is found which accounts for the non-equilibrium modification of the underlying bandstructure. The found characteristic Floquet-fan like bandstructure accounts for the quantized nature of the effect over all frequency space.

Effective interaction in a non-Fermi liquid conductor and spin correlations in under-doped cuprates

The effective interaction between the itinerant spin degrees of freedom in the paramagnetic phases of hole doped quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets is investigated theoretically, based on the single-band t-J model on 1D lattice, at zero temperature. The effective spin-spin interaction for this model in the strong correlation limit, is studied in terms of the generalized spin stiffness constant as a function of doping concentration. The plot of this generalized spin stiffness constant against doping shows a very high value of stiffness in the vicinity of zero doping and a very sharp fall with increase in doping concentration, signifying the rapid decay of original coupling of semi-localized spins in the system. Quite interestingly, this plot also shows a maximum occurring at a finite value of doping, which strongly suggests the tendency of the itinerant spins to couple again in the unconventional paramagnetic phase. As the doping is further increased, this new coupling is also suppressed and the spin response becomes analogous to almost Pauli-like. The last two predictions of ours are quite novel and may be directly tested by independent experiments and computational techniques in future. Our results in general receive good support from other theoretical works and experimental results extracted from the chains of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$.

Magneto-transport and magnetic susceptibility of SmFeAsO1-xFx (x = 0.0 and 0.20)

Bulk polycrystalline samples, SmFeAsO and the iso-structural superconducting SmFeAsO0.80F0.20 are explored through resistivity with temperature under magnetic field ρ(T, H), AC and DC magnetization (M-T), and Specific heat (Cp) measurements. The Resistivity measurement shows superconductivity for x = 0.20 sample with Tc(onset) ~ 51.7K. The upper critical field, [Hc2(0)] is estimated ~3770kOe by Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory. Broadening of superconducting transition in magneto transport is studied through thermally activated flux flow in applied field up to 130 kOe. The flux flow activation energy (U/kB) is estimated ~1215K for 1kOe field. Magnetic measurements exhibited bulk superconductivity with lower critical field (Hc1) of ~1.2kOe at 2K. In normal state, the paramagnetic nature of compound confirms no trace of magnetic impurity which orders ferromagnetically. AC susceptibility measurements have been carried out for SmFeAsO0.80F0.20 sample at various amplitude and frequencies of applied AC drive field. The inter-granular critical current density (Jc) is estimated. Specific heat [Cp(T)] measurement showed an anomaly at around 140K due to the SDW ordering of Fe, followed by another peak at 5K corresponding to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of Sm+3 ions in SmFeAsO compound. Interestingly the change in entropy (marked by the Cp transition height) at 5K for Sm+3 AFM ordering is heavily reduced in case of superconducting SmFeAsO0.80F0.20 sample.

Interplay and competition between superconductivity and charge orderings in the zero-bandwidth limit of the extended Hubbard model with pair hopping and on-site attraction

We present studies of an effective model which is a simple generalization of the standard model of a local pair superconductor with on-site pairing (i.e., the model of hard core bosons on a lattice) to the case of finite pair binding energy. The tight binding Hamiltonian consists of (i) the effective on-site interaction U, (ii) the intersite density-density interactions W between nearest-neighbours, and (iii) the intersite charge exchange term I, determining the hopping of electron pairs between nearest-neighbour sites. In the analysis of the phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties of this model we treat the intersite interactions within the mean-field approximation. Our investigations of the U<0 and W>0 case show that, depending on the values of interaction parameters, the system can exhibit three homogeneous phases: superconducting (SS), charge-ordered (CO) and nonordered (NO) as well as the phase separated SS-CO state.

Cold Rydberg atoms for quantum simulation of exotic condensed matter interactions

Quantum simulators could provide an alternative to numerical simulations for understanding minimal models of condensed matter systems in a controlled way. Typically, cold atom systems are used to simulate e.g. Hubbard models. In this paper, we discuss a range of exotic interactions that can be formed when cold Rydberg atoms are loaded into optical lattices with unconventional geometries; such as long-range electron-phonon interactions and extended Coulomb like interactions. We show how these can lead to proposals for quantum simulators for complex condensed matter systems such as superconductors. Continuous time quantum Monte Carlo is used to compare the proposed schemes with the physics found in traditional condensed matter Hamiltonians for systems such as high temperature superconductors.

QCD as a topologically ordered system

We argue that QCD belongs to a topologically ordered phase similar to many well-known condensed matter systems with a gap such as topological insulators or superconductors. Our arguments are based on an analysis of the so-called "deformed QCD" which is a weakly coupled gauge theory, but nevertheless preserves all the crucial elements of strongly interacting QCD, including confinement, nontrivial $θ$ dependence, degeneracy of the topological sectors, etc. Specifically, we construct the so-called topological "BF" action which reproduces the well known infrared features of the theory such as non-dispersive contribution to the topological susceptibility which can not be associated with any propagating degrees of freedom. Furthermore, we interpret the well known resolution of the celebrated $U(1)_A$ problem where the would be $η'$ Goldstone boson generates its mass as a result of mixing of the Goldstone field with a topological auxiliary field characterizing the system. We then identify the non-propagating auxiliary topological field of the BF formulation in deformed QCD with the Veneziano ghost (which plays the crucial role in resolution of the $U(1)_A$ problem). Finally, we elaborate on relation between "string -net" condensation in topologically ordered condensed matter systems and long range coherent configurations, the "skeletons", studied in QCD lattice simulations.

Information storage capacity of discrete spin systems

Understanding the limits imposed on information storage capacity of physical systems is a problem of fundamental and practical importance which bridges physics and information science. There is a well-known upper bound on the amount of information that can be stored reliably in a given volume of discrete spin systems which are supported by gapped local Hamiltonians. However, all the previously known systems were far below this theoretical bound, and it remained open whether there exists a gapped spin system that saturates this bound. Here, we present a construction of spin systems which saturate this theoretical limit asymptotically by borrowing an idea from fractal properties arising in the Sierpinski triangle. Our construction provides not only the best classical error-correcting code which is physically realizable as the energy ground space of gapped frustration-free Hamiltonians, but also a new research avenue for correlated spin phases with fractal spin configurations.

Magnon Energy Renormalization and Low-Temperature Thermodynamics of O(3) Heisenberg Ferromagnets

We present the perturbation theory for lattice magnon fields of $D$-dimensional O(3) Heisenberg ferromagnet. The effective Hamiltonian for the lattice magnon fields is obtained starting from the effective Lagrangian, with two dominant contributions that describe magnon-magnon interactions identified as a usual gradient term for the unit vector field and a part originating in the Wess-Zumino-Witten term of effective Lagrangian. Feynman diagrams for lattice scalar fields with derivative couplings are introduced, on basis of which we investigate the influence of magnon-magnon interactions on magnon self-energy and ferromagnet free energy. We also comment appearance of spurious terms in the low-temperature series for the free energy by examining magnon-magnon interactions and internal symmetry of the effective Hamiltonian (Lagrangian).
