Search for supersymmetry in events with photons, bottom quarks, and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search has been performed for the experimental signature of an isolated photon with high transverse momentum, at least one jet identified as originating from a bottom quark, and high missing transverse momentum. Such a final state may originate from supersymmetric models with gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking in events in which one of a pair of higgsino-like neutralinos decays into a photon and a gravitino while the other decays into a Higgs boson and a gravitino. The search is performed using the full dataset of 7 TeV proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2011, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb-1. A total of 7 candidate events are observed while 7.5 pm 2.2 events are expected from the Standard Model background. The results of the search are interpreted in the context of general gauge mediation to exclude certain regions of a benchmark plane for higgsino-like neutralino production.

Search for long-lived, heavy particles in final states with a muon and multi-track displaced vertex in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Many extensions of the Standard Model posit the existence of heavy particles with long lifetimes. In this Letter, results are presented of a search for such particles, which decay at a significant distance from their production point, using a final state containing charged hadrons and an associated muon. This analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb-1 collected in 2011 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Results are interpreted in the context of R-parity violating supersymmetric scenarios. No events in the signal region are observed and limits are set on the production cross section for supersymmetric particles, multiplied by the square of the branching ratio for a neutralino to decay to charged hadrons and a muon, as a function of the neutralino lifetime. To allow these limits to be used in a variety of models, they are presented for a range of squark and neutralino masses.

Searches for heavy long-lived sleptons and R-Hadrons with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

A search for long-lived particles is performed using a data sample of 4.7 fb-1 from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. No excess is observed above the estimated background and lower limits, at 95% confidence level, are set on the mass of the long-lived particles in different scenarios, based on their possible interactions in the inner detector, the calorimeters and the muon spectrometer. Long-lived staus in gauge-mediated SUSY-breaking models are excluded up to a mass of 300 GeV for tan beta = 5-20. Directly produced long-lived sleptons are excluded up to a mass of 278 GeV. R-hadrons, composites of gluino (stop, sbottom) and light quarks, are excluded up to a mass of 985 GeV (683 GeV, 612 GeV) when using a generic interaction model. Additionally two sets of limits on R-hadrons are obtained that are less sensitive to the interaction model for R-hadrons. One set of limits is obtained using only the inner detector and calorimeter observables, and a second set of limits is obtained based on the inner detector alone.

First Measurement of θ_13 from Delayed Neutron Capture on Hydrogen in the Double Chooz Experiment

The Double Chooz experiment has determined the value of the neutrino oscillation parameter $θ_{13}$ from an analysis of inverse beta decay interactions with neutron capture on hydrogen. This analysis uses a three times larger fiducial volume than the standard Double Chooz assessment, which is restricted to a region doped with gadolinium (Gd), yielding an exposure of 113.1 GW-ton-years. The data sample used in this analysis is distinct from that of the Gd analysis, and the systematic uncertainties are also largely independent, with some exceptions, such as the reactor neutrino flux prediction. A combined rate- and energy-dependent fit finds $\sin^2 2θ_{13}=0.097\pm 0.034(stat.) \pm 0.034 (syst.)$, excluding the no-oscillation hypothesis at 2.0 σ. This result is consistent with previous measurements of $\sin^2 2θ_{13}$.

Revisit to Non-decoupling MSSM

Dipole operator $\bar{s}σ_{μν}F^{μν}b$ requires the helicity flip in the involving quark states thus the breaking of chiral $U(3)_{Q}\times U(3)_{d}$. On the other hand, the $b$-quark mass generation is also a consequence of chiral $U(3)_{Q}\times U(3)_{d}$ symmetry breaking. Therefore, in many models, there might be strong correlation between the $b\to sγ$ and $b$ quark Yukawa coupling. We use non-decoupling MSSM model to illustrate this feature. The light Higgs boson may evade the direct search experiments at LEPII or Tevatron while the 125 GeV Higgs-like boson is identified as the heavy Higgs boson in the spectrum. A light charged Higgs is close to the heavy Higgs boson which is of 125 GeV and its contribution to $b\to s γ$ requires large supersymmetric correction with large PQ and $R$ symmetry breaking. The large supersymmetric contribution at the same time significantly modifies the $b$ quark Yukawa co upling. With combined flavor constraints $B\to X_{s}γ$ and $B_{s}\to μ^{+}μ^{-}$ and direct constraints on Higgs properties, we find best fit scenarios with light stop of $\cal O$(500 GeV), negative $A_{t}$ around -750 GeV and large $μ$-term of 2-3 TeV. In addition, reduction in $b\bar{b}$ partial width may also result in large enhancement of $ττ$ decay branching fraction. Large parameter region in the survival space under all bounds may be further constrained by $H\to ττ$ if no excess of $ττ$ is confirmed at LHC. We only identify a small parameter region with significant $H\to hh$ decay that is consistent with all bounds and reduced $ττ$ decay branching fraction.

Search for heavy resonances in the W/Z-tagged dijet mass spectrum in pp collisions at 7 TeV

A search has been made for massive resonances decaying into a quark and a vector boson, qW or qZ, or a pair of vector bosons, WW, WZ, or ZZ, where each vector boson decays to hadronic final states. This search is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collisions collected in the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2011 at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. For sufficiently heavy resonances the decay products of each vector boson are merged into a single jet, and the event effectively has a dijet topology. The background from QCD dijet events is reduced using recently developed techniques that resolve jet substructure. A 95% CL lower limit is set on the mass of excited quark resonances decaying into qW (qZ) at 2.38 TeV (2.15 TeV) and upper limits on the cross section for resonances decaying to qW, qZ, WW, WZ, or ZZ final states.

Integrating In Dark Matter Astrophysics at Direct Detection Experiments

We study the capabilities of the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, a neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment currently under construction at the Sanford Underground Laboratory, as a light WIMP detector. For a cross section near the current experimental bound, the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR should collect hundreds or even thousands of recoil events. This opens up the possibility of simultaneously determining the physical properties of the dark matter and its local velocity distribution, directly from the data. We analyze this possibility and find that allowing the dark matter velocity distribution to float considerably worsens the WIMP mass determination. This result is traced to a previously unexplored degeneracy between the WIMP mass and the velocity dispersion. We simulate spectra using both isothermal and Via Lactea II velocity distributions and comment on the possible impact of streams. We conclude that knowledge of the dark matter velocity distribution will greatly facilitate the mass and cross section determination for a light WIMP.

NLO tools and the background to $H\rightarrow WW$

A theory input is needed for the estimation of the largest background for the $H\rightarrow WW$ search at the LHC. This is the shape of the $m_{\ell\ell}$ spectrum from continuum $WW$ production. We find this to depend on how NLO matrix elements are merged with parton showers, and we compare the results from a number of different implementations. The results suggest that both the size of the background estimate and its uncertainty may have been underestimated. This conclusion is reinforced by a "Note Added", which comments on the LHC results released on November 14 2012.

Measurement of the differential cross sections for isolated direct photon pair production in $p \bar p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV

We present measurements of direct photon pair production cross sections using 8.5 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron $p \bar p$ collider. The results are presented as differential distributions of the photon pair invariant mass $dσ/dM_{γγ}$, pair transverse momentum $d σ/dp^{γγ}_T$, azimuthal angle between the photons $dσ/dΔϕ_{γγ}$, and polar scattering angle in the Collins-Soper frame $dσ/d|\cos θ^*|$. Measurements are performed for isolated photons with transverse momenta $p^γ_T>18 ~(17)$ GeV for the leading (next-to-leading) photon in $p_T$, pseudorapidities $|η^γ|<0.9$, and a separation in $η-ϕ$ space $Δ\mathcal R_{γγ} > 0.4$. We present comparisons with the predictions from Monte Carlo event generators {\sc diphox} and {\sc resbos} implementing QCD calculations at next-to-leading order, $2γ${\sc nnlo} at next-to-next-to-leading order, and {\sc sherpa} using matrix elements with higher-order real emissions matched to parton shower.

Searches for Higgs bosons in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 and 8 TeV in the context of four-generation and fermiophobic models

Searches are reported for Higgs bosons in the context of either the standard model extended to include a fourth generation of fermions (SM4) with masses of up to 600 GeV or fermiophobic models. For the former, results from three decay modes (tau tau, WW, and ZZ) are combined, whilst for the latter the diphoton decay is exploited. The analysed proton-proton collision data correspond to integrated luminosities of up to 5.1 inverse femtobarns at 7 TeV and up to 5.3 inverse femtobarns at 8 TeV. The observed results exclude the SM4 Higgs boson in the mass range 110-600 GeV at 99% confidence level (CL), and in the mass range 110-560 GeV at 99.9% CL. A fermiophobic Higgs boson is excluded in the mass range 110-147 GeV at 95% CL, and in the range 110-133 GeV at 99% CL. The recently observed boson with a mass near 125 GeV is not consistent with either an SM4 or a fermiophobic Higgs boson.

Production of the X(3872) in charmonia radiative decays

We discuss the possibilities of producing the X(3872), which is assumed to be a D \bar D^* bound state, in radiative decays of charmonia. We argue that the ideal energy regions to observe the X(3872) associated with a photon in e^+e^- annihilations are around the Y(4260) mass and around 4.45 GeV, due to the presence of the S-wave D \bar D_1(2420) and D^* \bar D_1(2420) threshold, respectively. Especially, if the Y(4260) is dominantly a D \bar D_1 molecule and the X(3872) a D \bar D^* molecule, the radiative transition strength will be quite large.

Search for gluino mediated bottom- and top-squark production in multijet final states in pp collisions at 8 TeV

A search for supersymmetry is presented based on events with large missing transverse energy, no isolated electron or muon, and at least three jets with one or more identified as a bottom-quark jet. A simultaneous examination is performed of the numbers of events in exclusive bins of the scalar sum of jet transverse momentum values, missing transverse energy, and bottom-quark jet multiplicity. The sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.4 inverse femtobarns, consists of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2012. The observed numbers of events are found to be consistent with the standard model expectation, which is evaluated with control samples in data. The results are interpreted in the context of two simplified supersymmetric scenarios in which gluino pair production is followed by the decay of each gluino to an undetected lightest supersymmetric particle and either a bottom or top quark-antiquark pair, characteristic of gluino mediated bottom- or top-squark production. Using the production cross section calculated to next-to-leading-order plus next-to-leading-logarithm accuracy, and in the limit of a massless lightest supersymmetric particle, we exclude gluinos with masses below 1170 GeV and 1020 GeV for the two scenarios, respectively.

A Global Fit Determination of Effective $Δm_{31}^2$ from Baseline Dependence of Reactor $\barν_e$ Disappearance

Recently, three reactor neutrino experiments, Daya Bay, Double Chooz and RENO have directly measured the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$. In this paper, another important oscillation parameter, effective $Δm_{31}^2$ (= $Δ\tilde{m}_{31}^2$) is measured using baseline dependence of the reactor neutrino disappearance. A global fit is applied to publicly available data and $Δ\tilde{m}_{31}^2 = 2.95^{+0.42}_{-0.61} \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$, $\sin^22θ_{13} = 0.099^{+0.016}_{-0.012}$ are obtained by setting both parameters free. This result is complementary to $Δtilde{m}_{31}^2$ to be measured by spectrum shape analysis. The measured $Δ\tilde{m}_{31}^2$ is consistent with $Δ\tilde{m}_{32}^2$ measured by $ν_μ$ disappearance in MINOS, T2K and atmospheric neutrino experiments within errors. The minimum $χ^2$ is small, which means the results from the three reactor neutrino experiments are consistent with each other.

Reassessing the importance of the colour-singlet contributions to direct J/psi+W production at the LHC and the Tevatron

We show that the colour-singlet contributions to the hadroproduction of J/psi in association with a W boson are sizable, if not dominant over the colour-octet contributions. They are of two kinds, sg -> J/psi + c + W at alpha^3_S alpha and q q'-bar -> gamma*/Z* W -> J/psi W at order alpha^3. These have not been considered in the literature until now. Our conclusion is that the hadroproduction of a J/psi in association with a W boson cannot be claimed as a clean probe of the colour-octet mechanism. The rate are small even at the LHC and it will be very delicate to disentangle the colour-octet contributions from the sizable colour-singlet ones and from the possibly large double-parton-scattering contributions. During this analysis, we have also noted that, for reactions such as the production of a J/psi by light quark-antiquark fusion, the colour-singlet contribution via an off-shell photon is of the order of the expectation from the colour-octet contribution via an off-shell gluon. This is relevant for inclusive production at low energies close to the threshold. Such an observation also likely extends to other processes naturally involving light-quark annihilation.

Inclusive b-jet production in heavy ion collisions at the LHC

Theoretical and experimental advances in understanding light jet production and modification in Pb+Pb reactions at a center-of-mass energy 2.76 TeV have been a highlight of the LHC heavy ion program. At the same time, the detailed mechanisms of heavy quark energy loss in dense QCD matter are not yet fully understood. With this motivation, we present theoretical predictions for the nuclear-induced attenuation of the differential cross sections for inclusive b-jet production in heavy ion collisions at the LHC for comparison to upcoming data. We find that for transverse momenta pT > 75 GeV both hadronization and mass effects are negligible and this attenuation is comparable to the one observed for light jets. We discuss how the detailed b-jet quenching patterns can be used to gain new insight into the in-medium heavy flavor dynamics.

How well can we guess theoretical uncertainties?

The problem of estimating the effect of missing higher orders in perturbation theory is analyzed with emphasis in the application to Higgs production in gluon-gluon fusion. Well-known mathematical methods for an approximated completion of the perturbative series are applied with the goal to not truncate the series, but complete it in a well-defined way, so as to increase the accuracy - if not the precision - of theoretical predictions. The uncertainty arising from the use of the completion procedure is discussed and a recipe for constructing a corresponding probability distribution function is proposed.

Evidence for the spin-0 nature of the Higgs boson using ATLAS data

Studies of the spin and parity quantum numbers of the Higgs boson are presented, based on proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The Standard Model spin-parity JP = 0+ hypothesis is compared with alternative hypotheses using the Higgs boson decays H->gamma gamma, H -> ZZ -> 4 leptons and H->WW -> l nu l nu, as well as the combination of these channels. The analysed dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.7 fb-1 collected at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. For the H -> ZZ -> 4-lepton decay mode the dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb-1 collected at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is added. The data are compatible with the Standard Model JP = 0+ quantum numbers for the Higgs boson, whereas all alternative hypotheses studied in this letter, namely some specific JP = 0-; 1+; 1-; 2+ models, are excluded at confidence levels above 97.8%. This exclusion holds independently of the assumptions on the coupling strengths to the Standard Model particles and in the case of the JP = 2+ model, of the relative fractions of gluon-fusion and quark-antiquark production of the spin-2 particle. The data thus provide evidence for the spin-0 nature of the Higgs boson, with positive parity being strongly preferred.

Search for a dark photon in the $π^0 \to e^+e^-γ$ decay

The presently world largest data sample of pi0 --> gamma e+e- decays containing nearly 5E5 events was collected using the WASA detector at COSY. A search for a dark photon U produced in the pi0 --> gamma U --> gamma e+e- decay from the pp-->ppπ^0 reaction was carried out. An upper limit on the square of the U-gamma mixing strength parameter epsilon^2 of 5e-6 at 90% CL was obtained for the mass range 20 MeV <M_U< 100 MeV. This result together with other recent experimental limits significantly reduces the M_U vs. ε^2 parameter space preferred by the measured value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment.
