$SU_q(2)$ Lattice Gauge Theory

We reformulate the Hamiltonian approach to lattice gauge theories such that, at the classical level, the gauge group does not act canonically, but instead as a Poisson-Lie group. At the quantum level, it then gets promoted to a quantum group gauge symmetry. The theory depends on two parameters - the deformation parameter $λ$ and the lattice spacing $a$. We show that the system of Kogut and Susskind is recovered when $λ\rightarrow 0$, while QCD is recovered in the continuum limit (for any $λ$). We thus have the possibility of having a two parameter regularization of QCD.

A rigorous solution of the quantum Einstein equations

We show that the second coefficient of the Conway knot polynomial is annihilated by the Hamiltonian constraint of canonically quantized general relativity in the loop representation. The calculations are carried out in a fully regularized lattice framework. Crucial to the calculation is the explicit form of the skein relations of the second coefficient, which relate it to the Gauss linking number. Contrary to the lengthy formal continuum calculation, the rigorous lattice version can be summarized in a few pictures.

Minimal Length Uncertainty Relation and Ultraviolet Regularisation

Studies in string theory and quantum gravity suggest the existence of a finite lower limit $Δx_0$ to the possible resolution of distances, at the latest on the scale of the Planck length of $10^{-35}m$. Within the framework of the euclidean path integral we explicitly show ultraviolet regularisation in field theory through this short distance structure. Both rotation and translation invariance can be preserved. An example geometry is studied in detail.

Lattice knot theory and quantum gravity in the loop representation

We present an implementation of the loop representation of quantum gravity on a square lattice. Instead of starting from a classical lattice theory, quantizing and introducing loops, we proceed backwards, setting up constraints in the lattice loop representation and showing that they have appropriate (singular) continuum limits and algebras. The diffeomorphism constraint reproduces the classical algebra in the continuum and has as solutions lattice analogues of usual knot invariants. We discuss some of the invariants stemming from Chern--Simons theory in the lattice context, including the issue of framing. We also present a regularization of the Hamiltonian constraint. We show that two knot invariants from Chern--Simons theory are annihilated by the Hamiltonian constraint through the use of their skein relations, including intersections. We also discuss the issue of intersections with kinks. This paper is the first step towards setting up the loop representation in a rigorous, computable setting.

``Sum over Surfaces'' form of Loop Quantum Gravity

We derive a spacetime formulation of quantum general relativity from (hamiltonian) loop quantum gravity. In particular, we study the quantum propagator that evolves the 3-geometry in proper time. We show that the perturbation expansion of this operator is finite and computable order by order. By giving a graphical representation a' la Feynman of this expansion, we find that the theory can be expressed as a sum over topologically inequivalent (branched, colored) 2d surfaces in 4d. The contribution of one surface to the sum is given by the product of one factor per branching point of the surface. Therefore branching points play the role of elementary vertices of the theory. Their value is determined by the matrix elements of the hamiltonian constraint, which are known. The formulation we obtain can be viewed as a continuum version of Reisenberger's simplicial quantum gravity. Also, it has the same structure as the Ooguri-Crane-Yetter 4d topological field theory, with a few key differences that illuminate the relation between quantum gravity and TQFT. Finally, we suggests that certain new terms should be added to the hamiltonian constraint in order to implement a ``crossing'' symmetry related to 4d diffeomorphism invariance.

Exact perturbative solution of the Kondo problem

We explicitly evaluate the infinite series of integrals that appears in the "Anderson-Yuval" reformulation of the anisotropic Kondo problem in terms of a one-dimensional Coulomb gas. We do this by developing a general approach relating the anisotropic Kondo problem of arbitrary spin with the boundary sine-Gordon model, which describes impurity tunneling in a Luttinger liquid and in the fractional quantum Hall effect. The Kondo solution then follows from the exact perturbative solution of the latter model in terms of Jack polynomials.

Nonperturbative Relations in N=2 SUSY Yang-Mills and WDVV equation

We find the nonperturbative relation between $\langle {\rm tr} ϕ^2 \rangle$, $\langle {\rm tr} ϕ^3\rangle$ the prepotential ${\cal F}$ and the vevs $\langle ϕ_i\rangle$ in $N=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with gauge group $SU(3)$. Nonlinear differential equations for ${\cal F}$ including the Witten -- Dijkgraaf -- Verlinde -- Verlinde equation are obtained. This indicates that $N=2$ SYM theories are essentially topological field theories and that should be seen as low-energy limit of some topological string theory. Furthermore, we construct relevant modular invariant quantities, derive canonical relations between the periods and investigate the structure of the beta function by giving its explicit form in the moduli coordinates. In doing this we discuss the uniformization problem for the quantum moduli space. The method we propose can be generalized to $N=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with higher rank gauge groups.

A doubled discretisation of abelian Chern-Simons theory

A new discretisation of a doubled, i.e. BF, version of the pure abelian Chern-Simons theory is presented. It reproduces the continuum expressions for the topological quantities of interest in the theory, namely the partition function and correlation function of Wilson loops. Similarities with free spinor field theory are discussed which are of interest in connection with lattice fermion doubling.

Contractions, Hopf algebra extensions and cov. differential calculus

We re-examine all the contractions related with the ${\cal U}_q(su(2))$ deformed algebra and study the consequences that the contraction process has for their structure. We also show using ${\cal U}_q(su(2))\times{\cal U}(u(1))$ as an example that, as in the undeformed case, the contraction may generate Hopf algebra cohomology. We shall show that most of the different Hopf algebra deformations obtained have a bicrossproduct or a cocycle bicrossproduct structure, for which we shall also give their dual `group' versions. The bicovariant differential calculi on the deformed spaces associated with the contracted algebras and the requirements for their existence are examined as well.

The Kappa-Weyl group and its algebra

The $κ-$Poincare group and its algebra in an arbitrary basis are constructed. The $κ-$de\-formation of the Weyl group and its algebra in any dimensions and in the reference frame in which $g_{00}=0$ are discussed.

Quantum group covariant systems

The meaning of quantum group transformation properties is discussed in some detail by comparing the (co)actions of the quantum group with those of the corresponding Lie group, both of which have the same algebraic (matrix) form of the transformation. Various algebras are considered which are covariant with respect to the quantum (super) groups $SU_q(2),\; SU_q(1, 1),\; SU_q(1|1),\; SU_q(n), \\ SU_q(m|n),\; OSp_q(1|2)$ as well as deformed Minkowski space-time algebras.

The Renormalization Group Method and Quantum Groups: the postman always rings twice

We review some of our recent results concerning the relationship between the Real-Space Renormalization Group method and Quantum Groups. We show this relation by applying real-space RG methods to study two quantum group invariant Hamiltonians, that of the XXZ model and the Ising model in a transverse field (ITF) defined in an open chain with appropriate boundary terms. The quantum group symmetry is preserved under the RG transformation except for the appearence of a quantum group anomalous term which vanishes in the classical case. This is called {\em the quantum group anomaly}. We derive the new qRG equations for the XXZ model and show that the RG-flow diagram obtained in this fashion exhibits the correct line of critical points that the exact model has. In the ITF model the qRG-flow equations coincide with the tensor product decomposition of cyclic irreps of $SU_q(2)$ with $q^4=1$.

Drinfel'd Twist and q-Deforming Maps for Lie Group Covariant Heisenberg Algebras

Any deformation of a Weyl or Clifford algebra can be realized through a change of generators in the undeformed algebra. q-Deformations of Weyl or Clifford algebrae that were covariant under the action of a simple Lie algebra g are characterized by their being covariant under the action of the quantum group $U_q g$. We present a systematic procedure for determining all possible corresponding changes of generators, together with the corresponding realizations of the $U_q g$-action. The intriguing relation between g-invariants and $U_q g$-invariants suggests that these changes of generators might be employed to simplify the dynamics of some g-covariant quantum physical systems.

Geometry of Deformed Boson Algebras

Phase-space realisations of an infinite parameter family of quantum deformations of the boson algebra in which the $q$-- and the $qp$--deformed algebras arise as special cases are studied. Quantum and classical models for the corresponding deformed oscillators are provided. The deformation parameters are identified with coefficients of non-linear terms in the normal forms expansion of a family of classical Hamiltonian systems. These quantum deformations are trivial in the sense that they correspond to non-unitary transformations of the Weyl algebra. They are non-trivial in the sense that the deformed commutators consistently quantise a class of non-canonical classical Poisson structures.

Linear Connections on the Two Parameter Quantum Plane

We apply a recently proposed definition of a linear connection in non commutative geometry based on the natural bimodule structure of the algebra of differential forms to the case of the two-parameter quantum plane. We find that there exists a non trivial family of linear connections only when the two parameters obeys a specific relation.

Differential Calculus on a three-parameter oscillator algebra

Two differential calculi are developped on an algebra generalizing the usual q-oscillator algebra and involving three generators and three parameters. They are shown to be invariant under the same quantum group that is extended to a ten-generator Hopf algebra. We discuss the special case where it reduces to a deformation of the invariance group of the Weyl-Heisenberg algebra for which we prove the existence of a constraint between the values of the parameters.

On the Structure of Monodromy Algebras and Drinfeld Doubles

We give a review and some new relations on the structure of the monodromy algebra (also called loop algebra) associated with a quasitriangular Hopf algebra H. It is shown that as an algebra it coincides with the so-called braided group constructed by S. Majid on the dual of H. Gauge transformations act on monodromy algebras via the coadjoint action. Applying a result of Majid, the resulting crossed product is isomorphic to the Drinfeld double D(H). Hence, under the so-called factorizability condition given by N. Reshetikhin and M. Semenov-Tian- Shansky, both algebras are isomorphic to the algbraic tensor product H\otimes H. It is indicated that in this way the results of Alekseev et al. on lattice current algebras are consistent with the theory of more general Hopf spin chains given by K. Szlachányi and the author. In the Appendix the multi-loop algebras L_m of Alekseev and Schomerus [AS] are identified with braided tensor products of monodromy algebras in the sense of Majid, which leads to an explanation of the ``bosonization formula'' of [AS] representing L_m as H\otimes\dots\otimes H.

8-Vertex Correlation Functions and Twist Covariance of q-KZ Equation

We study the vertex operators $Φ(z)$ associated with standard quantum groups. The element $Z = RR^{t}$ is a "Casimir operator" for quantized Kac-Moody algebras and the quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov (q-KZ) equation is interpreted as the statement $:ZΦ(z): = Φ(z)$. We study the covariance of the q-KZ equation under twisting, first within the category of Hopf algebras, and then in the wider context of quasi Hopf algebras. We obtain the intertwining operators associated with the elliptic R-matrix and calculate the two-point correlation function for the eight-vertex model.
