Atomic Data for Astrophysics. II. New Analytic Fits for Photoionization Cross Sections of Atoms and Ions

We present a complete set of analytic fits to the non-relativistic photoionization cross sections for the ground states of atoms and ions of elements from H through Si, and S, Ar, Ca, and Fe. Near the ionization thresholds, the fits are based on the Opacity Project theoretical cross sections interpolated and smoothed over resonances. At higher energies, the fits reproduce calculated Hartree-Dirac-Slater photoionization cross sections.

UV and X-ray Spectral Lines of FeXXIII Ion for Plasma Diagnostics

We have calculated X-ray and UV spectra of Be-like Fe (FeXXIII) ion in collisional-radiative model including all fine-structure transitions among the 2s^2, 2s2p, 2p^2, 2snl, and 2pnl levels where n=3 and 4, adopting data for the collision strengths by Zhang & Sampson (1992) and by Sampson, Goett, & Clark (1984). Some line intensity ratios can be used for the temperature diagnostics. We show 5 ratios in UV region and 9 ratios in X-ray region as a function of electron temperature and density at 0.3keV < T_e < 10keV and $n_e = 1 - 10^{25} cm^{-3}$. The effect of cascade in these line ratios and in the level population densities are discussed.

Generalized Unruh effect and Lamb shift for atoms on arbitrary stationary trajectories

We study the spontaneous de-excitation and excitation of accelerated atoms on arbitrary stationary trajectories (``generalized Unruh effect''). We consider the effects of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction separately. We show that radiation reaction is generally not altered by stationary acceleration, whereas the contribution of vacuum fluctuations differs for all stationary accelerated trajectories from its inertial value. Spontaneous excitation from the ground state occurs for all { accelerated stationary} trajectories and is therefore the ``normal case''. We furthermore show that the radiative energy shift (``Lamb shift'') of a two-level atom is modified by acceleration for all stationary trajectories. Again only vacuum fluctuations give rise to the shift. Our results are illustrated for the special case of an atom in circular motion, which may be experimentally relevant.

Exact method for locating potential resonances and Regge trajectories

We propose an exact method for locating the zeros of the Jost function for analytic potentials in the complex momentum--plane. We further extend the method to the complex angular--momentum plane to provide the Regge trajectories. It is shown, by using several examples, that highly accurate results for extremely wide as well as for extremely narrow resonances with or without the presence of the Coulomb interaction can be obtained.

The semiclassical resonance spectrum of Hydrogen in a constant magnetic field

We present the first purely semiclassical calculation of the resonance spectrum in the Diamagnetic Kepler problem (DKP), a hydrogen atom in a constant magnetic field with $L_z =0$. The classical system is unbound and completely chaotic for a scaled energy $ε\sim E B^{-2/3}$ larger than a critical value $ε_c >0$. The quantum mechanical resonances can in semiclassical approximation be expressed as the zeros of the semiclassical zeta function, a product over all the periodic orbits of the underlying classical dynamics. Intermittency originating from the asymptotically separable limit of the potential at large electron--nucleus distance causes divergences in the periodic orbit formula. Using a regularisation technique introduced in [G.\ Tanner and D.\ Wintgen, Phys.~Rev.~Lett.~{\bf 75}, 2928 (1995)] together with a modified cycle expansion, we calculate semiclassical resonances, both position and width, which are in good agreement with quantum mechanical results obtained by the method of complex rotation. The method also provides good estimates for the bound state spectrum obtained here from the classical dynamics of a scattering system. A quasi Einstein--Brillouin--Keller (QEBK) quantisation is derived that allows for a description of the spectrum in terms of approximate quantum numbers and yields the correct asymptotic behaviour of the Rydberg--like series converging towards the different Landau thresholds.

ATI as a source for multiply charged ion production in a laser field

A theory for the many-electron multi-photon process is presented. It is shown that after single-electron excitation into some level in the continuum (ATI) an inelastic collision of the excited electron with the parent atomic particle can result in an excitation of the ion. It may be the continuum state excitation giving the doubly charged ion or the discrete state which also greatly enhances the doubly charged ion production. The probability of these phenomena greatly exceeds that of the direct ionization of a single-charged ion. The single-electron ATI makes possible the two-electron process even in the moderate field. The example of two-electron excitations of He atom in a 780 nm laser field with intensity above $\approx 10^{14}$W/cm$^2$ is discussed.

Chaotic features in classical scattering processes between ions and atoms

A numerical study has been done of collisions between protons and hydrogen atoms, treated as classical particles, at low impact velocities. The presence of chaos has been looked for by investigating the processes with standard techniques of the chaotic--scattering theory. The evidence of a sharp transition from nearly regular scattering to fully developed chaos has been found at the lower velocities.

On the absence of bound-state stabilization through short ultra-intense fields

We address the question of whether atomic bound states begin to stabilize in the short ultra-intense field limit. We provide a general theory of ionization probability and investigate its gauge invariance. For a wide range of potentials we find an upper and lower bound by non-perturbative methods, which clearly exclude the possibility that the ultra intense field might have a stabilizing effect on the atom. For short pulses we find almost complete ionization as the field strength increases.

The energy dependence of relativistic nonradiative electron capture

The energy dependence of the nonradiative electron capture cross-section is discussed in the relativistic domain. A simple analytic expression is obtained for inner-shell transitions using second-order perturbation theory. We have confirmed that the leading-order term is found to have the following energy dependence: Q ~ E^{-1}ln^2 E. This is attributed to a combination of kinematic features of the process and retardation effects. Electron capture without change of spin is the dominant transition.

On the Influence of Pulse Shapes on Ionization Probability

We investigate analytical expressions for the upper and lower bounds for the ionization probability through ultra-intense shortly pulsed laser radiation. We take several different pulse shapes into account, including in particular those with a smooth adiabatic turn-on and turn-off. For all situations for which our bounds are applicable we do not find any evidence for bound-state stabilization.

Conditional Hamiltonian and Reset Operator in the Quantum Jump Approach

For the time development of a single system in the quantum jump approach or for quantum trajectories one requires the conditional (reduced) Hamiltonian between jumps and the reset operator after a jump. Explicit expressions for them are derived for a general N-level system by employing the same assumptions as in the usual derivation of the Bloch equations. We discuss a possible minor problem with positivity for these expressions as well as for the corresponding Bloch equations.

2-2 and 2-3 Intercombination Transitions in Be-like Ions

We report here on calculation of probabilities of intercombination transitions $2s^2$ $^1S_0$ - $2s2p$ $^3P_1$, $2s3p$ $^3P_1$ for Be-like ions along the isoelectronic sequence for large range of $Z$. Our results obtained with the $1/Z$ expansion method agree well with experimental data including the recent ones.

Motion and Ionization Equilibrium of Hydrogen Atoms in Superstrong Magnetic Field

We study the effects of finite proton mass on the energy levels of hydrogen atoms moving transverse to a superstrong magnetic field $B$ with generalized pseudomomentum $K_\perp$. Field strengths of order $B\sim 10^{12}$ Gauss are typically found on the surfaces of neutron stars, but we also study the regime $B\go B_{crit}= 4.23\times 10^{13}$ Gauss, where the Landau excitation energy of the proton is large. We adopt two different approaches to the two-body problem in strong magnetic field, and obtain an approximate, but complete solution of the atomic energy as a function of $B$ and $K_\perp$. We show that, for $B>>B_{crit}$, there is an orthogonal set of bound states, which do not have any Landau excitation contribution in their energies. The states with very large $K_\perp$ have small binding energy and small transverse velocity, but are nevertheless distinct from the fully ionized states. The final results for the excitation energies are given in the form of analytical fitting formulae. The generalized Saha equation for the ionization-recombination equilibrium of hydrogen gas in the presence of a superstrong magnetic field is then derived. Although the maximum transverse velocity of a bound atom decreases as $B$ increases, the statistical weight due to transverse motion is actually increased by the strong magnetic field. For astrophysically interesting case of relatively low density and temperature, we obtain analytic approximations for the partition functions. The highly excited bound states have a smaller statistical weight than the fully ionized component.

Hydrogen Molecules In Superstrong Magnetic Field: II. Excitation Levels

We study the energy levels of H$_2$ molecules in a superstrong magnetic field ($B\go 10^{12}$ G), typically found on the surfaces of neutron stars. The interatomic interaction potentials are calculated by a Hartree-Fock method with multi-configurations assuming electrons are in the ground Landau state. Both the aligned configurations and arbitrary orientations of the molecular axis with respect to the magnetic field axis are considered. Different types of molecular excitations are then studied: electronic excitations, aligned (along the magnetic axis) vibrational excitations, transverse vibrational excitations (a constrained rotation of the molecular axis around the magnetic field line). Similar results for the molecular ion H$_2^+$ are also obtained and compared with previous variational calculations. Both numerical results and analytical fitting formulae are given for a wide range of field strengths. In contrast to the zero-field case, it is found that the transverse vibrational excitation energies can be larger than the aligned vibration excitation, and they both can be comparable or larger than the electronic excitations. For $B\go B_{crit}=4.23\times 10^{13}$ G, the Landau energy of proton is appreciable and there is some controversy regarding the dissociation energy of H$_2$. We show that H$_2$ is bound even for $B>>B_{crit}$ and that neither proton has a Landau excitation in the ground molecular state.

QED in Optically Active Media: Enhanced Spontaneous Emission and Chiral Yet Parity Conserving Corrections to the Electron Mass

The electromagnetic field inside an isotropic optically active medium is quantized on the base of Fedorov's model for optical activity. The modified photon propagator is derived. Using this result it is shown that the QED correction to the electron mass contains chiral terms which nevertheless are parity invariant. The spontaneous emission rate of a two-level atom is shown to increase in the medium. The spontaneously emitted radiation is partially polarized.

Electron impact excitation cross sections for allowed transitions in atoms

We present a semiempirical Gaunt factor for widely used Van Regemorter formula [Astrophys. J. 136, 906 (1962)] for the case of allowed transitions in atoms with the LS coupling scheme. Cross sections calculated using this Gaunt factor agree with measured cross sections to within the experimental error.

Quantum state measurement by realistic heterodyne detection

The determination of the quantum properties of a single mode radiation field by heterodyne or double homodyne detection is studied. The realistic case of not fully efficient photodetectors is considered. It is shown that a large amount of quite {\em precise} information is avalaible whereas the completeness of such information is also discussed. Some examples are given and the special case of states expressed as a finite superposition of number states is considered in some detail.
