Pairing Glue in the Hubbard and t-J Models

The question of whether one should speak of a "pairing glue" in the Hubbard and t-J models is basically a question about the dynamics of the pairing interaction. If the dynamics of the pairing interaction arises from virtual states, whose energies correspond to the Mott gap, and give rise to the exchange coupling J, the interaction is instantaneous on the relative time scales of interest. In this case, while one might speak of an "instantaneous glue", this interaction differs from the traditional picture of a retarded pairing interaction. However, if the energies correspond to the spectrum seen in the dynamic spin susceptibility, then the interaction is retarded and one speaks of a spin-fluctuation glue which mediates the d-wave pairing. Here we present results from numerical studies which provide insight into this question.

Polaronic signatures in the optical properties of Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$

We investigate the temperature and doping dependence of the optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ of Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ in terms of magnetic/lattice polaron formation. We employ dynamical mean-field theory in the context of the Holstein-t-J model where an exact analytical solution is available in the limit of infinite connectivity. We show that the pseudogap features in the optical conductivity of this compound can be associated to the formation of lattice polarons assisted by the magnetic interaction.

Fermi Surface Effect on Lorenz Number of Correlated Metal

We investigate an effect that an ideal Lorenz number $L_{\rm i}$ of correlated metal shows peculiar Fermi surface dependence, which is caused by the onset of a particular channel of Umklapp scattering. We evaluate $L_{\rm i}$ for some simple models and transition metals, and note that $L_{\rm i}$ for Na$_x$CoO$_2$ decreases sensitively as $x$ approaches an Umklapp threshold around $x_c \simeq 0.6$.

Rough edges in quantum transport of Dirac particles

We consider Dirac particles confined to a thin strip, e.g., graphene nanoribbon, with rough edges. The confinement is implemented by a large mass in the Hamiltonian or by imposing boundary conditions directly on the graphene wave-functions. The scattering of a rough edge leads to a transverse channel-mixing and provides crucial limitation to the quantum transport in narrow ribbons. We solve the problem perturbatively and find the edge scattering contribution to the conductivity, which can be measured experimentally. The case of Schroedinger particles in a strip is also addressed, and the comparison between Schroedinger and Dirac transport is made. Anomalies associated with quasi-one dimensionality, such as Van Hove singularities and localization, are discussed. The violation of the Matthiessen rule is pointed out.

Global $SO(3)\times SO(3)\times U(1)$ symmetry of the Hubbard model on bipartite lattices

It is found that for on-site interaction $U\neq 0$ the local $SU(2)\times SU(2) \times U(1)$ gauge symmetry of the Hubbard model on a bipartite lattice with vanishing transfer integral $t=0$ can be lifted to a global $[SU(2)\times SU(2)\times U(1)]/Z_2^2=SO(3)\times SO(3)\times U(1)$ symmetry in the presence of the kinetic-energy hopping term of the Hamiltonian with $t>0$. The generator of the new found hidden independent charge global U(1) symmetry is one half the rotated-electron number of singly-occupied sites operator. It is confirmed elsewhere that our results have important physical consequences concerning the further understanding of the unusual properties of the hole-doped cuprates.

Breakdown of Fermi Liquid Theory in Doped Mott Insulators by Dynamical Spectral Weight Transfer

We show that doped Mott insulators exhibit a collective degree of freedom, not made out of the elemental excitations, because the number of single-particle addition states at low energy per electron per spin is greater than one. The presence of such a collective degree of freedom which is not a consequence of proximity to a phase transition is a consequence of dynamical spectral weight transfer from high to low energies. This physics is captured by the charge $2e$ boson that emerges by explicitly integrating out the high-energy scale in the Hubbard model. The charge $2e$ boson binds to a hole, thereby mediating new charge $e$ states at low energy. It is the presence of such charge $e$ states which have no counterpart in the non-interacting system that provides the general mechanism for the breakdown of Fermi liquid theory in doped Mott insulators. The relationship between the charge $2e$ boson formulation and the standard perturbative treatment is explained.

Raman scattering in a d-wave superconductor - a one gap scenario

Recent Raman scattering data in B_{1g} and B_{2g} geometries in the superconducting state of underdoped cuprates were interpreted as evidence for two distinct energy gaps. We argue that these data can be equally well explained within a one gap scenario if final state interactions are taken into account. In particular, we show that they can account for the differing doping dependences of the Raman peaks in these two geometries.

Nonequilibrium Quantum Breakdown in a Strongly Correlated Electron System

The nonlinear transport properties of the Mott insulator are discussed with focus on the many-body Landau-Zener mechanism. After reviewing basic concepts such as the non-adiabatic geometric phase and the Schwinger mechanism, we study the decay of the insulating groundstate in strong electric fields using the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group. A short comment on the proposed mapping to the quantum walk model is added before discussing the relevance of the theory to experimental results. This article is a draft of a book chapter of the book entitled "Quantum and Semi-classical Percolation & Breakdown" (Lecture Note in Physics, Springer-Verlag), to appear 2008.

Structural, vibrational and quasiparticle properties of the Peierls semiconductor $\rm BaBiO_3$: a hybrid functional and self-consistent GW+vertex-corrections study

$\rm BaBiO_3$ is characterized by a charge disproportionation with half of the Bi atoms possessing a valence 3+ and half a valence 5+. Because of selfinteraction errors, local and semi-local density functionals fail to describe the charge disproportionation quantitatively, yielding a too small structural distortion and no band gap. Using hybrid functionals we obtain a satisfactory description of the structural, electronic, optical, and vibrational properties of $\rm BaBiO_3$. The results obtained using GW (Green's function G and screened Coulomb potential W) based schemes on top of hybrid functionals, including fully selfconsistent GW calculations with vertex corrections in the dielectric screening, qualitatively confirm the HSE picture but a systematic overestimation of the bandgap by about 0.4 eV is observed.

Multi-ferroelectricity in charge ordered LuFe2O4(LuFeO3)n with n=1

Electronic ferroelectricity from charge ordering (CO) is currently a significant issue that has been extensively investigated in the charge/spin frustrated LuFe2O4 system. Chemical substitution and structural layer intercalation have been considered as potentially effective approaches in our recent study, and we herein report on the structural and multi-ferromagnetic properties in the layered series of LuFe2O4(LuFeO3)n (n=0, 1, and 2). Experimental investigations reveal that the (RFeO3)-layer intercalation results in notable changes in ferroelectricity, magnetic properties and CO features. These results demonstrate that further exploration of this series of layered members might prove fruitful.

Pseudogap-driven Hall effect sign reversal

We present a calculation of the Hall coefficient in 2H-TaSe2 and 2H-Cu0.2NbS2 relied on the photoemission data and compare the results to transport observations. The approach, based on the solution of the semiclassical Boltzmann equation in the isotropic tau-approximation yields high-temperature Hall coefficient consistent with the one measured directly. Taking into account the opening of the pseudogap and redistribution of the spectral weight, recently observed in angle resolved photoemission spectra of 2H-TaSe2, allows us to reproduce the temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient including prominent sign change with no adjustable parameters.

Superconductivity in $β$-pyrochlore superconductor KOs$_{2}$O$_{6}$: treatment within strong-coupling Eliashberg theory

We study the influence of the rattling phonons on superconductivity in $β$-pyrochlore KOs$_{2}$O$_{6}$ compound based on the strong-coupling Eliashberg approach. In particular, analyzing the specific heat data we find that the rattling phonon frequency changes discontinuously at the critical temperature of the first order phase transition. Solving the strong-coupling Eliashberg equations with temperature dependent $α^{2}F(ω)$, we investigate the consequence of this first order phase transition for the anomalous temperature dependence of the superconducting gap. We discuss our results in context of the recent experimental data.

Hot Dirac Fermions in Epitaxial Graphene

We investigate the ultrafast relaxation dynamics of hot Dirac fermionic quasiparticles in multilayer epitaxial graphene using ultrafast optical differential transmission spectroscopy. We observe DT spectra which are well described by interband transitions with no electron-hole interaction. Following the initial thermalization and emission of high-energy phonons, the electron cooling is determined by electron-acoustic phonon scattering, found to occur on the time scale of 1 ps for highly doped layers, and 4-11 ps in undoped layers. The spectra also provide strong evidence for the multilayer stucture and doping profile of thermally grown epitaxial graphene on SiC.

Bose Fluids Above Tc

This paper emphasizes that non-linear rotational or diamagnetic susceptibility is characteristic of Bose fluids above their superfluid Tcs. For sufficiently slow rotation or, for superconductors, weak B-fields this amounts to an incompressible response to vorticity. The cause is that there are terms missing in the conventionally accepted model Hamiltonian for quantized vortices in the Bose fluid. The resulting susceptibility can account for recent observations of Chan et al on solid He, and Ong et al on cuprate superconductors.

Superconducting Polarons and Bipolarons

The BCS theory has been extended by us to the strong-coupling regime where carriers are small lattice polarons and bipolarons. Here I review the multi-polaron strong-coupling theory of superconductivity. Attractive electron correlations, prerequisite to any superconductivity, are caused by an almost unretarded electron-phonon interaction sufficient to overcome the direct Coulomb repulsion in this regime. Low energy physics is that of small polarons and bipolarons, which are itinerant quasiparticles existing in the Bloch states at temperatures below the characteristic phonon frequency. I identify the long-range Froehlich electron-phonon interaction with c-axis polarised optical phonons as the most essential for pairing in superconducting cuprates. A number of key observations have been predicted or explained with polarons and bipolarons including unusual isotope effects and upper critical fields, normal state (pseudo)gaps, kinetic properties and diamagnetism, and giant proximity effects. These and some other observations provide strong evidence for a novel state of electronic matter in layered cuprates, which is a charged Bose-liquid of small mobile bipolarons.

One-particle irreducibility with initial correlations

In quantum field theory (QFT), the vacuum expectation value of a normal product of creation and annihilation operators is always zero. This simple property paves the way to the classical treatment of perturbative QFT. This is no longer the case in the presence of initial correlations, that is if the vacuum is replaced by a general state. As a consequence, the combinatorics of correlated systems such as the ones occurring in many-body physics is more complex than that of quantum field theory and the general theory has made very slow progress. Similar observations hold in statistical physics or quantum probability for the perturbation series arising from the study of non Gaussian measures. In this work, an analysis of the Hopf algebraic aspects of quantum field theory is used to derive the structure of Green functions in terms of connected and one-particle irreducible Greeen functions for perturbative QFT in the presence of initial correlations.
