A Note on Bimodules and $II_1$-Subfactors

A brief introduction into bimodules of $II_1$-factors is presented. Furthermore a version of the following result due to M. Pimsner and S. Popa is derived: Let $N=M_{-1}\subset M=M_0 \subset M_1 \subset M_2 \subset \ldots$ denote the Jones tower of a $II_1$-factor $N\subset M$ with finite index. Then the factor obtained by the basic construction from the pair $N\subset M_{n-1}$ is equal to $M_{2n-1}$.

$C^*$-Tensor Categories in the Theory of $II_1$-Subfactors

The article contains a detailed description of the connection between finite depth inclusions of $II_1$-subfactors and finite $C^*$-tensor categories (i.e. $C^*$-tensor categories with dimension function for which the number of equivalence classes of irreducible objects is finite). The $(N,N)$-bimodules belonging to a $II_1$-subfactor $N\subset M$ with finite Jones index form a $C^*$-tensor category with dimension function. Conversely, taking an object of a finite $C^*$-tensor category C we construct a subfactor $A\subset R$ of the hyperfinite $II_1$-factor R with finite index and finite depth. For this subfactor we compute the standard invariant and show that the $C^*$-tensor category of the corresponding $(A,A)$-bimodules is equivalent to a subcategory of C. We illustrate the results for the $C^*$-tensor category of the unitary finite dimensional corepresentations of a finite dimensional Hopf-*-algebra.

On the problem of semiinfinite beam oscillation with internal damping

We study the Cauchy problem for the equation of the form $$ \ddot{u}(t) + (åA + B)\dot{u}(t) + (A+G)u(t) = 0,\tag* $$ where $A$, $B$, and $G$ are øs in a Hilbert space $\Cal H$ with $A$ selfadjoint, $σ(A)=[0,\infty)$, $B\ge0$ bounded, and $G$ symmetric and $A$-subordinate in a certain sense. Spectral properties of the correspondent operator pencil $L(λ) := λ^2I + λ(αA + B) + A + G$ are studied, and existence and uniqueness of generalized and classical solutions of the Cauchy problem are proved. Equations of the type (*) include, e.g., an abstract model for the problem of semiinfinite beam oscillations with internal damping.

States of Toeplitz-Cuntz algebras

We characterize the state space of a Toeplitz-Cuntz algebra TO_n in terms of positive operator matrices $Ω$ on Fock space which satisfy sl(Ω) \le Ω, where sl(Ω) is the operator matrix obtained from Ωby taking the trace in the last variable. Essential states correspond to those matrices Ωwhich are slice-invariant. As an application we show that a pure essential product state of the fixed-point algebra for the action of the gauge group has precisely a circle of pure extensions to TO_n.

Two 1935 questions of Mazur about polynomials in Banach spaces: a counter-example

We construct a continuous scalar-valued 2-polynomial, $W$, on the separable Hilbert space $l_2$ and an unbounded set $R\subset l_2$ such that (i) $W$ is bounded on an $ε$-neighbourhood of $R$; (ii) $W$ is unbounded on ${1/2} R$; (iii) consequently, $W$ does not factor through any bounded 1-polynomial on $l_2$ sending $R$ to a bounded set. This answers in the negative two 1935 questions asked by Mazur (problems 55 and 75 in the Scottish Book). The construction is valid both over $\R$ and $\C$. (In finite dimensions the questions were answered in the positive by Auerbach soon after being asked.)

On the index and dilations of completely positive semigroups

It is known that every semigroup of normal completely positive maps $P = {P_t: t\geq 0}$ of $B(H)$, satisfying $P_t(1) = 1$ for every $t\geq 0$, has a minimal dilation to an E_0-semigroup acting on $B(K)$ for some Hilbert space K containing H. The minimal dilation of P is unique up to conjugacy. In a previous paper a numerical index was introduced for semigroups of completely positive maps and it was shown that the index of P agrees with the index of its minimal dilation to an E_0-semigroup. However, no examples were discussed, and no computations were made. In this paper we calculate the index of a unital completely positive semigroup whose generator is a bounded operator $ L: B(H)\to B(H) $ in terms of natrual structures associated with the generator. This includes all unital CP semigroups acting on matrix algebras. We also show that the minimal dilation of the semigroup $P={\exp{tL}: t\geq 0}$ to an \esg\ is is cocycle conjugate to a CAR/CCR flow.

The Brauer Group of a Locally Compact Groupoid

We define the Brauer group $\Br(G)$ of a locally compact groupoid $G$ to be the set of Morita equivalence classes of pairs $(\A,α)$ consisting of an elementary C*-bundle $\A$ over $G^{(0)}$ satisfying Fell's condition and an action $α$ of $G$ on $\A$ by $*$-isomorphisms. When $G$ is the transformation groupoid $X\times H$, then $\Br(G)$ is the equivariant Brauer group $\Br_H(X)$. In addition to proving that $\Br(G)$ is a group, we prove three isomorphism results. First we show that if $G$ and $H$ are equivalent groupoids, then $\Br(G)$ and $\Br(H)$ are isomorphic. This generalizes the result that if $G$ and $H$ are groups acting freely and properly on a space $X$, say $G$ on the left and $H$ on the right then $\Br_G(X/H)$ and $\Br_H(G/ X)$ are isomorphic. Secondly we show that the subgroup $\Br_0(G)$ of $\Br(G)$ consisting of classes $[\A,α]$ with $\A$ having trivial Dixmier-Douady invariant is isomorphic to a quotient $\E(G)$ of the collection $\Tw(G)$ of twists over $G$. Finally we prove that $\Br(G)$ is isomorphic to the inductive limit $\Ext(G,T)$ of the groups $\E(G^X)$ where $X$ varies over all principal $G$ spaces $X$ and $G^X$ is the imprimitivity groupoid associated to $X$.

Deformation Quantization via Fell Bundles

A method for deforming C*-algebras is introduced, which applies to C*-algebras that can be described as the cross-sectional C*-algebra of a Fell bundle. Several well known examples of non-commutative algebras, usually obtained by deforming commutative ones by various methods, are shown to fit our unified perspective of deformation via Fell bundles. Examples are the non-commutative spheres of Matsumoto, the non-commutative lens spaces of Matsumoto and Tomiyama, and the quantum Heisenberg manifolds of Rieffel. In a special case, in which the deformation arises as a result of an action of R^{2d}, assumed to be periodic in the first d variables, we show that we get a strict deformation quantization.

Pseudodifferential calculus on manifolds with corners and groupoids

We build a longitudinally smooth differentiable groupoid associated to any manifold with corners. The pseudodifferential calculus on this groupoid coincides with the pseudodifferential calculus of Melrose (also called b-calculus). We also define an algebra of rapidly decreasing functions on this groupoid; it contains the kernels of the smoothing operators of the (small) b-calculus.

One-parameter representations on C*-algebras

Strongly continuous one-parameter representations on C*-algebras and their extension to the multiplier algebra are investigated. We give also a proof of the Stone theorem on Hilbert C*-modules and look into some related problems.

Green's Functions and Energy Decay on Homogeneous Spaces

We consider a homogeneous space X=(X,d,m) of dimension $ν\geq 1$ and a local regular Dirichlet form in L^{2}(X,m). We prove that if a Poincaré inequality holds on every pseudo-ball B(x,R) of X, with local characteristic constant c_{0}(x) and c_{1}(r), then a Green's function estimate from above and below is obtained. A Saint-Venant-like principle is recovered in terms of the Energy's decay.

Operator space structures and the split property II

A characterization of the split property for an inclusion $N\subset M$ of $W^*$-factors with separable predual is established in terms of the canonical non-commutative $L^2$ embedding considered in \cite{B1,B2} $$ \F_2:a\in N\to \D_{M,\Om}^{1/4}a\Om\in L^2(M,\Om) $$ associated with an arbitrary fixed standard vector $\Om$ for $M$. This characterization follows an analogous characterization related to the canonical non-commutative $L^1$ embedding $$ \F_1:a\in N\to (\cdot\Om,J_{M,\Om}a\Om)\in L^1(M,\Om) $$ also considered in \cite{B1,B2} and studied in \cite{F}. The split property for a Quantum Field Theory is characterized by equivalent conditions relative to the non-commutative embeddings $\F_i$, $i=1,2$, constructed by the modular Hamiltonian of a privileged faithful state such as e.g. the vacuum state. The above characterization would be also useful for theories on a curved space-time where there exists no a-priori privileged state.

Quantum Mechanics and Operator algebras on the Hilbert ball

Cirelli, Manià and Pizzocchero generalized quantum mechanics by Kähler geometry. Furthermore they proved that any unital C$^{*}$-algebra is represented as a function algebra on the set of pure states with a noncommutative $*$-product as an application. The ordinary quantum mechanics is regarded as a dynamical system of the projective Hilbert space ${\cal P}({\cal H})$ of a Hilbert space ${\cal H}$. The space ${\cal P}({\cal H})$ is an infinite dimensional Kähler manifold of positive constant holomorphic sectional curvature. In general, such dynamical system is constructed for a general Kähler manifold of nonzero constant holomorphic sectional curvature $c$. The Hilbert ball $B_{\cal H}$ is defined by the open unit ball in ${\cal H}$ and it is a Kähler manifold with $c<0$. We introduce the quantum mechanics on $B_{\cal H}$. As an application, we show the structure of the noncommutative function algebra on $B_{\cal H}$.

The Laplace Transform Method for Linear Differential Equations of the Fractional Order

The Laplace transform method for solving of a wide class of initial value problems for fractional differential equations is introduced. The method is based on the Laplace transform of the Mittag-Leffler function in two parameters. To extend the proposed method for the case of so-called "sequential" fractional differential equations, the Laplace transform for the ''sequential'' fractional derivative is also obtained. Besides that, tools necessary for testing candidate solutions by direct substitution in corresponding equations are introduced: fractional derivatives of the Mittag-Leffler function and the rule for the fractional differentiation of integrals depending on a parameter. Definition of the fractional Green's function is given and some of its properties, necessary for constructing solutions of initial-value problems for fractional linear differential equations, are presented. Explicit expressions for the fractional Green's function for the special cases of one-, two-, three- and four-term equations are given, as well as the explicit expression for an arbitrary n-term fractional linear ordinary differential equation with constant coefficients. Several examples of solution of various types of fractional differential equations, including fractional diffusion-wave equation. The bibliography (54 items) covers many field of possible application of fractional derivatives.

Partial dynamical systems and C*-algebras generated by partial isometries

A collection of partial isometries whose range and initial projections satisfy a specified set of conditions often gives rise to a partial representation of a group. The C*-algebra generated by the partial isometries is thus a quotient of the universal C*-algebra for partial representations of the group, from which it inherits a crossed product structure, of an abelian C*-algebra by a partial action of the group. Questions of faithfulness of representations, simplicity, and ideal structure of these C*-algebras can then be addressed in a unified manner from within the theory of partial actions. We do this here, focusing on two key properties of partial dynamical systems, namely amenability and topological freeness; they are the essential ingredients of our main results in which we characterize faithful representations, simplicity and the ideal structure of crossed products. As applications we consider three situations involving C*-algebras generated by partial isometries: partial representations of groups, Toeplitz algebras of quasi-lattice ordered groups, and Cuntz-Krieger algebras. These C*-algebras share a crossed product structure which we give here explicitly and which we use to study them in terms of the underlying partial actions.

Quantum Field Theory as a Problem of Resummation (Short guide to using summability methods)

Thesis includes review on the large order behaviour of perturbation theory in quantum mechanical and field theory models; generalization of the Borel summability and strong asymptotic conditions to various (including horn-shaped) regions; discussion of analytic aspects of perturbation theory; examples which demonstrate differences between the Borel summability and generalized one; application to the Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory and to the definition of the operator valued functions. The new summability methods converges in the whole Mittag-Leffeler star of an analytical function and as such is useful for localization of singularities in the complex plane. Their position can be calculated even analytically provided large order behaviour of the Taylor series is known. Method can be implemented numerically as well.
