Hyperpolar homogeneous foliations on symmetric spaces of noncompact type - an overview

A foliation F on a Riemannian manifold M is homogeneous if its leaves coincide with the orbits of an isometric action on M. A foliation F is polar if it admits a section, that is, a connected closed totally geodesic submanifold of M which intersects each leaf of F, and intersects orthogonally at each point of intersection. A foliation F is hyperpolar if it admits a flat section. These notes are related to joint work with Jose Carlos Diaz-Ramos and Hiroshi Tamaru about hyperpolar homogeneous foliations on Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type. Apart from the classification result which we proved in arXiv:0807.3517v2 [math.DG], we present here in more detail some relevant material about symmetric spaces of noncompact type, and discuss the classification in more detail for the special case M = SL_{r+1}(R)/SO_{r+1}.

Double solid twistor spaces II: general case

In this paper we investigate Moishezon twistor spaces which have a structure of double covering over a very simple rational threefold. These spaces can be regarded as a direct generalization of the twistor spaces studied by Poon and Kreussler-Kurke to the case of arbitrary signature. In particular, the branch divisor of the double covering is a cut of the rational threefold by a single quartic hypersurface. A defining equation of the hypersurface is determined in an explicit form. We also show that these twistor spaces interpolate LeBrun twistor spaces and the twistor spaces constructed in math.DG/0701278.

Almost CR quaternionic manifolds and their immersibility in HP^n

We apply the general theory of codimension one integrability conditions for $G$-structures developed in arXiv:1306.6817v3 [math.DG] to the case of quaternionic CR geometry. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for an almost CR quaternionic manifold to admit local immersions as an hypersurface of the quaternionic projective space. We construct a deformation of the standard quaternionic contact structure on the quaternionic Heisenberg group which does not admit local immersions in any quaternionic manifold.

D-branes and Azumaya/matrix noncommutative differential geometry,II: Azumaya/matrix supermanifolds and differentiable maps therefrom -- with a view toward dynamical fermionic D-branes in string theory

In this Part II of D(11), we introduce new objects: super-$C^k$-schemes and Azumaya super-$C^k$-manifolds with a fundamental module (or, synonymously, matrix super-$C^k$-manifolds with a fundamental module), and extend the study in D(11.1) ([L-Y3], arXiv:1406.0929 [math.DG]) to define the notion of `differentiable maps from an Azumaya/matrix supermanifold with a fundamental module to a real manifold or supermanifold'. This allows us to introduce the notion of `fermionic D-branes' in two different styles, one parallels Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz fermionic string and the other Green-Schwarz fermionic string. A more detailed discussion on the Higgs mechanism on dynamical D-branes in our setting, taking maps from the D-brane world-volume to the space-time in question and/or sections of the Chan-Paton bundle on the D-brane world-volume as Higgs fields, is also given for the first time in the D-project. Finally note that mathematically string theory begins with the notion of a differentiable map from a string world-sheet (a $2$-manifold) to a target space-time (a real manifold). In comparison to this, D(11.1) and the current D(11.2) together bring us to the same starting point for studying D-branes in string theory as dynamical objects.

D-branes and synthetic/$C^{\infty}$-algebraic symplectic/calibrated geometry, I: Lemma on a finite algebraicness property of smooth maps from Azumaya/matrix manifolds

We lay down an elementary yet fundamental lemma concerning a finite algebraicness property of a smooth map from an Azumaya/matrix manifold with a fundamental module to a smooth manifold. This gives us a starting point to build a synthetic (synonymously, $C^{\infty}$-algebraic) symplectic geometry and calibrated geometry that are both tailored to and guided by D-brane phenomena in string theory and along the line of our previous works D(11.1) (arXiv:1406.0929 [math.DG]) and D(11.2) (arXiv:1412.0771 [hep-th]).

Further studies on the notion of differentiable maps from Azumaya/matrix manifolds, I. The smooth case

In this follow-up of our earlier two works D(11.1) (arXiv:1406.0929 [math.DG]) and D(11.2) (arXiv:1412.0771 [hep-th]) in the D-project, we study further the notion of a `differentiable map from an Azumaya/matrix manifold to a real manifold'. A conjecture is made that the notion of differentiable maps from Azumaya/matrix manifolds as defined in D(11.1) is equivalent to one defined through the contravariant ring-homomorphisms alone. A proof of this conjecture for the smooth (i.e. $C^{\infty}$) case is given in this note. Thus, at least in the smooth case, our setting for D-branes in the realm of differential geometry is completely parallel to that in the realm of algebraic geometry, cf.\ arXiv:0709.1515 [math.AG] and arXiv:0809.2121 [math.AG]. A related conjecture on such maps to ${\Bbb R}^n$, as a $C^k$-manifold, and its proof in the $C^{\infty}$ case is also given. As a by-product, a conjecture on a division lemma in the finitely differentiable case that generalizes the division lemma in the smooth case from Malgrange is given in the end, as well as other comments on the conjectures in the general $C^k$ case. We remark that there are similar conjectures in general and theorems in the smooth case for the fermionic/super generalization of the notion.

On the set of metrics without local limiting Carleman weights

In the paper arXiv:1411.4887 [math.AP] it is shown that the set of Riemannian metrics which do not admit global limiting Carleman weights is open and dense, by studying the conformally invariant Weyl and Cotton tensors. In the paper arXiv:1011.2507 [math.DG] it is shown that the set of Riemannian metrics which do not admit local limiting Carleman weights at any point is residual, showing that it contains the set of metrics for which there are no local conformal diffeomorphisms between any distinct open subsets. This paper is a continuation of arXiv:1411.4887 [math.AP] in order to prove that the set of Riemannian metrics which do not admit local limiting Carleman weights \emph{at any point} is open and dense.

$N=1$ fermionic D3-branes in RNS formulation I. $C^\infty$-Algebrogeometric foundations of $d=4$, $N=1$ supersymmetry, SUSY-rep compatible hybrid connections, and $\widehat{D}$-chiral maps from a $d=4$ $N=1$ Azumaya/matrix superspace

As the necessary background to construct from the aspect of Grothendieck's Algebraic Geometry dynamical fermionic D3-branes along the line of Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz superstrings in string theory, three pieces of the building blocks are given in the current notes: (1) basic $C^\infty$-algebrogeometric foundations of $d=4$, $N=1$ supersymmetry and $d=4$, $N=1$ superspace in physics, with emphasis on the partial $C^\infty$-ring structure on the function ring of the superspace, (2) the notion of SUSY-rep compatible hybrid connections on bundles over the superspace to address connections on the Chan-Paton bundle on the world-volume of a fermionic D3-brane, (3) the notion of $\widehat{D}$-chiral maps $\widehatφ$ from a $d=4$ $N=1$ Azumaya/matrix superspace with a fundamental module with a SUSY-rep compatible hybrid connection $\widehat{\nabla}$ to a complex manifold $Y$ as a model for a dynamical D3-branes moving in a target space(-time). Some test computations related to the construction of a supersymmetric action functional for SUSY-rep compatible $(\widehat{\nabla}, \widehatφ)$ are given in the end, whose further study is the focus of a separate work. The current work is a sequel to D(11.4.1) (arXiv:1709.08927 [math.DG]) and D(11.2) (arXiv:1412.0771 [hep-th]) and is the first step in the supersymmetric generalization, in the case of D3-branes, of the standard action functional for D-branes constructed in D(13.3) (arXiv:1704.03237 [hep-th]).

Physicists' $d=3+1$, $N=1$ superspace-time and supersymmetric QFTs from a tower construction in complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry and a purge-evaluation/index-contracting map

The complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry aspect of a superspace(-time) $\widehat{X}$ in Sec.\,1 of D(14.1) (arXiv:1808.05011 [math.DG]) together with the Spin-Statistics Theorem in Quantum Field Theory, which requires fermionic components of a superfield be anticommuting, lead us to the notion of towered superspace(-time) $\widehat{X}^{\widehat{\boxplus}}$ and the built-in purely even physics sector $X^{\mbox{physics}}$ from $\widehat{X}^{\widehat{\boxplus}}$. We use this to reproduce the $d=3+1$, $N=1$ Wess-Zumino model and the $d=3+1$, $N=1$ supersymmetric $U(1)$ gauge theory with matter --- as in, e.g., Chap.\,V and Chap.\,VI \& part of Chap.\,VII of the classical Supersymmetry \& Supergravity textbook by Julius Wess and Jonathan Bagger --- and, hence, recast physicists' two most basic supersymmetric quantum field theories solidly into the realm of (complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded) $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry. Some traditional differential geometers' ways of understanding supersymmetric quantum field theories are incorporated into the notion of a purge-evaluation/index-contracting map ${\cal P}:C^\infty(X^{\mbox{physics}})\rightarrow C^\infty(\widehat{X})$ in the setting. This completes for the current case a $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry language we sought for in D(14.1), footnote 2, that can directly link to the study of supersymmetry in particle physics. Once generalized to the nonabelian case in all dimensions and extended $N\ge 2$, this prepares us for a fundamental (as opposed to solitonic) description of super D-branes parallel to Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz fundamental superstrings

Ricci flat Calabi's metric is not projectively induced

We show that the Ricci flat Calabi's metrics on holomorphic line bundles over compact Kaehler-Einstein manifolds are not projectively induced. As a byproduct we solve a conjecture addressed in [arXiv:1705.03908v2 [math.DG]] by proving that any multiple of the Eguchi-Hanson metric on the blow-up of C^2 at the origin is not projectively induced.

On Weyl's type theorems and genericity of projective rigidity in sub-Riemannian Geometry

H. Weyl in 1921 demonstrated that for a connected manifold of dimension greater than $1$, if two Riemannian metrics are conformal and have the same geodesics up to a reparametrization, then one metric is a constant scaling of the other one. In the present paper, we investigate the analogous property for sub-Riemannian metrics. In particular, we prove that the analogous statement, called the Weyl projective rigidity, holds either in real analytic category for all sub-Riemannian metrics on distributions with a specific property of their complex abnormal extremals, called minimal order, or in smooth category for all distributions such that all complex abnormal extremals of their nilpotent approximations are of minimal order. This also shows, in real analytic category, the genericity of distributions for which all sub-Riemannian metrics are Weyl projectively rigid and genericity of Weyl projectively rigid sub-Riemannian metrics on a given bracket generating distributions. Finally, this allows us to get analogous genericity results for projective rigidity of sub-Riemannian metrics, i.e.when the only sub-Riemannian metric having the same sub-Riemannian geodesics, up to a reparametrization, with a given one, is a constant scaling of this given one. This is the improvement of our results on the genericity of weaker rigidity properties proved in recent paper arXiv:1801.04257[math.DG].

Grothendieck meeting [Wess & Bagger]: [Supersymmetry and supergravity: IV, V, VI, VII, XXII] (2nd ed.) reconstructed in complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry, I. Construction under trivialization of spinor bundle

Forty-six years after the birth of supersymmetry in 1973 from works of Julius Wess and Bruno Zumino, the standard quantum-field-theorists and particle physicists' language of `superspaces', `supersymmetry', and `supersymmetric action functionals in superspace formulation' as given in Chapters IV, V, VI, VII, XXII of the classic on supersymmetry and supergravity: Julius Wess & Jonathan Bagger: Supersymmetry and Supergravity (2nd ed.), is finally polished, with only minimal mathematical patches added for consistency and accuracy in dealing with nilpotent objects from the Grassmann algebra involved, to a precise setting in the language of complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry. This is completed after the lesson learned from D(14.1) (arXiv:1808.05011 [math.DG]) and the notion of `$d=3+1$, $N=1$ towered superspaces' as complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded $C^\infty$-schemes, their distinguished sectors, and purge-evaluation maps first developed in SUSY(1) (= D(14.1.Supp.1)) (arXiv:1902.06246 [hep-th]) and further polished in the current work. While the construction depends on a choice of a trivialization of the spinor bundle by covariantly constant sections, as long as the transformation law and the induced isomorphism under a change of trivialization of the spinor bundle by covariantly constant sections are understood, any object or structure thus defined or constructed is mathematically well-defined. The construction can be generalized to all other space-time dimensions with simple or extended supersymmetries. This is part of the mathematical foundation required to study fermionic D-branes in the Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz formulation.

An $L^2$-Cheeger Müller theorem on compact manifolds-with-boundary

We generalize a Cheeger-Müller type theorem for flat, unitary bundles on infinite covering spaces over manifolds-with-boundary, proven by Burghelea, Friedlander and Kappeller arXiv:dg-ga/9510010 [math.DG]. Employing recent anomaly results by Brüning, Ma and Zhang, we prove an analogous statement for a general flat bundle that is only required to have a unimodular restriction to the boundary.

Some global results for asymptotically simple spacetimes

The null splitting theorem (proved in math.DG/9909158) is discussed. As an application, a uniqueness theorem for Minkowski space and for de Sitter space associated with the occurrence of null lines (inextendible globally achronal null geodesics) is presented.

Novikov - Shubin signatures, II

This paper continues math.DG/9903140. Here we construct a linking form on the torsion part of middle dimensional extended L^2 homology and cohomology of odd-dimensional manifolds. We give a geometric necessary condition when this linking form is hyperbolic. We compute this linking form in case when the manifold bounds. We introduce and study new numerical invariants of the linking form: the Novikov - Shubin signature and the torsion signature. We compute these invariants explicitly for manifolds with $π_1 = Z$ in terms of the Blanchfield form. We develop a notion of excess for extensions of torsion modules and show how this concept can be used to guarantee vanishing of the torsion signature.

Manifolds of Positive Scalar Curvature and Conformal Cobordism Theory

We study here compact manifolds with positive scalar curvature metrics. We use the relative Yamabe invariant from math.DG/0008138 to define the conformal cobordism relation on the category of such manifolds. We prove that corresponding conformal cobordism groups $\Pos_n^{\conf}(γ)$ are isomorphic to the cobordism groups $\Pos_n(γ)$ defined topologically by S. Stolz. As a corollary we show that the conformal concordance of positive scalar curvature metrics coincides with the standard concordance relation. Our main technical tools came from the analysis and conformal geometry.

Evolution equations for special Lagrangian 3-folds in C^3

This is the third in a series of papers constructing explicit examples of special Lagrangian submanifolds in C^m. The previous paper in the series, math.DG/0008155, defined the idea of evolution data, which includes an (m-1)-submanifold P in R^n, and constructed a family of special Lagrangian m-folds N in C^m, which are swept out by the image of P under a 1-parameter family of linear or affine maps phi_t : R^n -> C^m, satisfying a first-order o.d.e. in t. In this paper we use the same idea to construct special Lagrangian 3-folds in C^3. We find a 1-1 correspondence between sets of evolution data with m=3 and homogeneous symplectic 2-manifolds P. This enables us to write down several interesting sets of evolution data, and so to construct corresponding families of special Lagrangian 3-folds in C^3. Our main results are a number of new families of special Lagrangian 3-folds in C^3, which we write very explicitly in parametric form. Generically these are nonsingular as immersed 3-submanifolds, and diffeomorphic to R^3 or S^1 x R^2. Some of the 3-folds are singular, and we describe their singularities, which we believe are of a new kind. We hope these 3-folds will be helpful in understanding singularities of compact special Lagrangian 3-folds in Calabi-Yau 3-folds. This will be important in resolving the SYZ conjecture in Mirror Symmetry.

Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian surfaces in Hermitian symmetric spaces

This paper is the third of a series on Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian surfaces. We present here the most general theory, valid for any Hermitian symmetric target space. Using well-chosen moving frame formalism, we show that the equations are equivalent to an integrable system, generalizing the C^2 subcase analyzed in the first article (arXiv:math.DG/0009202). This system shares many features with the harmonic map equation of surfaces into symmetric spaces, allowing us to develop a theory close to Dorfmeister, Pedit and Wu's, including for instance a Weierstrass-type representation. Notice that this article encompasses the article mentioned above, although much fewer details will be given on that particular flat case.
