Discrimination power of measures for nonlinearity in a time series

The performance of a number of different measures of nonlinearity in a time series is compared numerically. Their power to distinguish noisy chaotic data from linear stochastic surrogates is determined by Monte Carlo simulation for a number of typical data problems. The main result is that the ratings of the different measures vary from example to example. It seems therefore preferable to use an algorithm with good overall performance, that is, higher order autocorrelations or nonlinear prediction errors.

Classical and quantum decay of one dimensional finite wells with oscillating walls

To study the time decay laws (tdl) of quasibounded hamiltonian systems we have considered two finite potential wells with oscillating walls filled by non interacting particles. We show that the tdl can be qualitatively different for different movement of the oscillating wall at classical level according to the characteristic of trapped periodic orbits. However, the quantum dynamics do not show such differences.

Correlation-Hole Method for Spectra of Superconducting Microwave Billiards

The spectral fluctuation properties of various two- and three-dimensional superconducting billiard systems are investigated by employing the correlation-hole method. It rests on the sensitivity of the spectral Fourier transform to long range correlations and is thus an alternative technique to study chaotic dynamics. First, we apply the method to the eigenfrequencies which are extracted from the measured resonances. Second, we analyze the unfolded raw spectra, including the shape of the resonances. The merit of the method lies in a clear separation of the statistics due to the positions and due to the shape of the resonances. However, we show that statistical fluctuations of the intensities of the resonances have a strong impact on the observable. Therefore, the visibility of the correlation hole is studied as a function of the number of independent statistical variables entering into the intensities. The visibility improves if independent spectra are superimposed.

Spectral Properties of Three-Dimensional Quantum Billiards with a Pointlike Scatterer

We examine the spectral properties of three-dimensional quantum billiards with a single pointlike scatterer inside. It is found that the spectrum shows chaotic (random-matrix-like) characteristics when the inverse of the formal strength $\bar{v}^{-1}$ is within a band whose width increases parabolically as a function of the energy. This implies that the spectrum becomes random-matrix-like at very high energy irrespective to the value of the formal strength. The predictions are confirmed by numerical experiments with a rectangular box. The findings for a pointlike scatterer are applied to the case for a small but finite-size impurity. We clarify the proper procedure for its zero-size limit which involves non-trivial divergence. The previously known results in one and two-dimensional quantum billiards with small impurities inside are also reviewed from the present perspective.

Non-Perturbative Zero Modes in the Kraichnan Model for Turbulent Advection

The anomalous scaling behavior of the n-th order correlation functions ${\cal F}_n$ of the Kraichnan model of turbulent passive scalar advection is believed to be dominated by the homogeneous solutions (zero-modes) of the Kraichnan equation $\hat{\cal B}_n {\cal F}_n=0$. Previous analysis found zero-modes in perturbation theory in a small parameter. We present non-perturbative analysis of the simplest (non-trivial) case of n=3 and compare the results with the perturbative predictions.

Perturbation Theory for the Rosenzweig-Porter Matrix Model

We study an ensemble of random matrices (the Rosenzweig-Porter model) which, in contrast to the standard Gaussian ensemble, is not invariant under changes of basis. We show that a rather complete understanding of its level correlations can be obtained within the standard framework of diagrammatic perturbation theory. The structure of the perturbation expansion allows for an interpretation of the level structure on simple physical grounds, an aspect that is missing in the exact analysis (T. Guhr, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 2258 (1996), T. Guhr and A. Müller-Groeling, cond-mat/9702113).

Berry's conjecture and information theory

It is shown that, by applying a principle of information theory, one obtains Berry's conjecture regarding the high-lying quantal energy eigenstates of classically chaotic systems.

Geometric Interpretation of Chaos in Two-Dimensional Hamiltonian Systems

Time-independent Hamiltonian flows are viewed as geodesic flows in a curved manifold, so that the onset of chaos hinges on properties of the curvature two-form entering into the Jacobi equation. Attention focuses on ensembles of orbit segments evolved in 2-D potentials, examining how various orbital properties correlate with the mean value and dispersion, and k, of the trace K of the curvature. Unlike most analyses, which have attributed chaos to negative curvature, this work exploits the fact that geodesics can be chaotic even if K is everywhere positive, chaos arising as a parameteric instability triggered by regular variations in K along the orbit. For ensembles of fixed energy, with both regular and chaotic segments, simple patterns connect the values of and k for different segments, both with each other and with the short time Lyapunov exponent X. Often, but not always, there is a near one-to- one correlation between and k, a plot of these quantities approximating a simple curve. X varies smoothly along this curve, chaotic segments located furthest from the regular regions tending systematically to have the largest X's. For regular orbits, and k also vary smoothly with ``distance'' from the chaotic phase space regions, as probed, e.g., by the location of the initial condition on a surface of section. Many of these observed properties can be understood qualitatively in terms of a one-dimensional Mathieu equation.

Calculation of eigenvalues of a strongly chaotic system using Gaussian wavepacket dynamics

We apply the approximate dynamics derived from the Gaussian time-dependent variational principle to the Hamiltonian $ \hat H= {1/2}(\hat p_x ^2+ \hat p_y ^2)+ {1/2}\hat x^2\hat y^2$, which is strongly chaotic in the classical limit. We are able to calculate, essentially analytically, low-lying eigenvalues for this system. These approximate eigenvalues agree within a few percent with the numerical results. We believe that this is the first example of the use of TDVP dynamics to compute individual eigenvalues in a non-trivial system and one of the few such computations in a chaotic system by any method. There is a short self-contained discussion on the validity of Gaussian approximations in the paper.

Quantitative study of scars in the boundary section of the stadium billiard

We construct a semiclassically invariant function on the boundary of the billiard, taken as the Poincare section in Birkhoff coordinates, based on periodic orbit information, as an ansatz for the normal derivative of the eigenfunction. Defining an appropriate scalar product on the section, we can compute the scar intensity of a given periodic orbit on an eigensate, as the overlap beetween the constructed function and the normal derivative on the section of the eigenstate. In this way, we are able to investigate how periodic orbits scar the spectrum and how a given eigenstate decompose into scar functions. We use this scheme on the Bunimovich stadium.

Dynamical phase diagram of the dc-driven underdamped Frenkel-Kontorova chain

Multistep dynamical phase transition from the locked to the running state of atoms in response to a dc external force is studied by MD simulations of the generalized Frenkel-Kontorova model in the underdamped limit. We show that the hierarchy of transition recently reported [Braun et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 1295 (1997)] strongly depends on the value of the friction constant. A simple phenomenological explanation for the friction dependence of the various critical forces separating intermediate regimes is given.

Lyapunov exponents from geodesic spread in configuration space

The exact form of the Jacobi -- Levi-Civita (JLC) equation for geodesic spread is here explicitly worked out at arbitrary dimension for the configuration space manifold M_E = {q in R^N | V(q) < E} of a standard Hamiltonian system, equipped with the Jacobi (or kinetic energy) metric g_J. As the Hamiltonian flow corresponds to a geodesic flow on (M_E,g_J), the JLC equation can be used to study the degree of instability of the Hamiltonian flow. It is found that the solutions of the JLC equation are closely resembling the solutions of the standard tangent dynamics equation which is used to compute Lyapunov exponents. Therefore the instability exponents obtained through the JLC equation are in perfect quantitative agreement with usual Lyapunov exponents. This work completes a previous investigation that was limited only to two-degrees of freedom systems.

Solitons and diffusive modes in the noiseless Burgers equation: Stability analysis

The noiseless Burgers equation in one spatial dimension is analyzed from the point of view of a diffusive evolution equation in terms of nonlinear soliton modes and linear diffusive modes. The transient evolution of the profile is interpreted as a gas of right hand solitons connected by ramp solutions with superposed linear diffusive modes. This picture is supported by a linear stability analysis of the soliton mode. The spectrum and phase shift of the diffusive modes are determined. In the presence of the soliton the diffusive modes develop a gap in the spectrum and are phase-shifted in accordance with Levinson's theorem. The spectrum also exhibits a zero-frequency translation or Goldstone mode associated with the broken translational symmetry.

Multiscaling in passive scalar advection as stochastic shape dynamics

The Kraichnan rapid advection model is recast as the stochastic dynamics of tracer trajectories. This framework replaces the random fields with a small set of stochastic ordinary differential equations. Multiscaling of correlation functions arises naturally as a consequence of the geometry described by the evolution of N trajectories. Scaling exponents and scaling structures are interpreted as excited states of the evolution operator. The trajectories become nearly deterministic in high dimensions allowing for perturbation theory in this limit. We calculate perturbatively the anomalous exponent of the third and fourth order correlation functions. The fourth order result agrees with previous calculations.

Synchronization and Maximum Lyapunov Exponents of Cellular Automata

We study the synchronization of totalistic one dimensional cellular automata (CA). The CA with a non zero synchronization threshold exhibit complex non periodic space time patterns and conversely. This synchronization transition is related to directed percolation. We study also the maximum Lyapunov exponent for CA, defined in analogy with continuous dynamical systems as the exponential rate of expansion of the linear map induced by the evolution rule of CA, constructed with the aid of the Boolean derivatives. The synchronization threshold is strongly correlated to the maximum Lyapunov exponent and we propose approximate relations between these quantities. The value of this threshold can be used to parametrize the space time complexity of CA.

On The Three Point Velocity Correlation Functions in 2d Forced Turbulence

We present a simple exact formula for the three point velocity correlation functions in two dimensional turbulence which is valid on all scales and which interpolates between the direct and inverse cascade regimes. As expected, these correlation functions are universal in these extreme regimes. We also discuss the effect of anisotropy and friction.

Frozen spatial chaos induced by boundaries

We show that rather simple but non-trivial boundary conditions could induce the appearance of spatial chaos (that is stationary, stable, but spatially disordered configurations) in extended dynamical systems with very simple dynamics. We exemplify the phenomenon with a nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation in a two-dimensional undulated domain. Concepts from the theory of dynamical systems, and a transverse-single-mode approximation are used to describe the spatially chaotic structures.
