Phase transitions in the two-dimensional Anisotropic Biquadratic Heisenberg Model

In this paper we study the influence of the single-ion anisotropy in the two-dimensional biquadratic Heisenberg model (ABHM) on the square lattice at zero and finite low temperatures. It is common to represent the bilinear and biquadratic terms by $J_1=J\cosθ$ and $J_2=J\sinθ$, respectively, and it is well documented the many phases present in the model as function of $θ$. However we have adopted a constant value for the bilinear constant ($J_1=1$) and small values of the biquadratic term ($|J_2| D_c$, the excited states are gapped and there is no spin long-range order (LRO) even at zero temperature. Using Schwinger bosonic representation and Self-Consistent Harmonic Approximation (SCHA), we have studied the quantum and thermal phase transitions as a function of the bilinear and biquadratic constants.

Cation-ordered A$'_{1/2}$A$''_{1/2}$B$_2$X$_4$ magnetic spinels as magnetoelectrics

We show that 1:1 ordering of A$'$ and A$''$ cations in A$'_{1/2}$A$''_{1/2}$B$_2$X$_4$ magnetic spinels results in appearance of magnetoelectric properties. Possible value of magnetically induced electric polarization is calculated using the recently proposed microscopic model, which takes into account spin-dependent electric dipole moments of magnetic ions located in noncentrosymmetric crystallographic positions. We build phenomenological models of magnetic phase transitions in cation-ordered spinels, which describe ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic ordering patterns of B cation spins, and calculate the respective magnetoelectric responses. We find that magnetoelectric coefficients diverge at ferromagnetic or weak ferromagnetic phase transitions in ordered spinels.

Crystals, magnetic and electronic properties of a new ThCr2Si2-type BaMn2Bi2 and K-doped compositions

This is a report on the new 122 ternary transition-metal pnictide of BaMn2Bi2, which is crystallized from bismuth flux. BaMn2Bi2 adopts ThCr2Si2-type structure (I4/mmm) with a = 4.4902(3) Å and c = 14.687(1) Å; it is antiferromagnetic with anisotropic magnetic susceptibility and semiconducting with a band gap of Eg = 6 meV. Heat capacity result confirms the insulating ground state in BaMn2Bi2 with the electronic residual Sommerfeld coefficient of γ ~ 0. The high temperature magnetization results show that magnetic ordering temperature is TN ~ 400 K. Hole-doping in BaMn2Bi2 via potassium in Ba1-xKxMn2Bi2 results in metallic behavior for x = 0.10(1), 0.32(1) and 0.36(1). With K-doping, more magnetically anisotropic behavior is observed. Although there is a downturn in electrical resistivity and low-field magnetization data below 4 K in > 30%-doped crystals, there is no sign of zero resistance or diamagnetism. This manuscript is a report on new materials of BaMn2Bi2 and Ba1-xKxMn2Bi2 (0 < x < 0.4). Results from powder X-ray diffraction, anisotropic temperature- and field-dependent magnetization, temperature-and field-dependent electrical resistivity, and heat capacity are presented.

Evolution of Magnetism in the $Na_{3-d}Na_{1-x}Mg_xIr_2O_6$ Series of Honeycomb Iridates

The structural and magnetic properties of a new series of iridium-based honeycomb lattices with the formula Na3-delta(Na1-xMgx)Ir2O6 (x = 0 to 1) are reported. As x and delta are increased, the honeycomb lattice contracts and the strength of the antiferromagnetic interactions decreases systematically due to a reduction in Ir-O-Ir bond angles. Samples with imperfect stoichiometry exhibit disordered magnetic freezing at temperatures Tf between 3.4 K and 5 K. This glassy magnetism likely arises due to the presence of non-magnetic Ir3+, which are distributed randomly throughout the lattice, with a possible additional contribution from stacking faults. Together, these results demonstrate that chemical defects and non-stoichiometry have a significant effect on the magnetism of compounds in the A2IrO3 materials family.

Anomalous transport with overlap fermions

Anomalous correlators of vector and axial currents which enter the Kubo formulae for the chiral magnetic and the chiral separation conductivities are explicitly calculated for free overlap fermions on the lattice. The results are confronted with continuum calculations in the finite-temperature regularization, and a subtle point of such regularization for chiral magnetic conductivity related to the correct counting of the chiral states is highlighted. In agreement with some previous claims in the literature, we find that in a lattice regularization which respects gauge invariance, the chiral magnetic conductivity vanishes. We point out that the relation of anomalous transport coefficients to axial anomaly is nontrivial due to the non-commutativity of their infrared limit and the Taylor expansion in baryon or chiral chemical potential. In particular, we argue that the vector and axial Ward identities fix the asymptotic behavior of anomalous current-current correlators in the limit of large momenta. Basing on the work of Knecht et al. on the perturbative non-renormalization of the transverse part of the correlator of two vector and one axial currents, we demonstrate that the relation of the anomalous vector-vector correlator to axial anomaly holds perturbatively in massless QCD but might be subject to non-perturbative corrections. Finally, we identify kinematical regimes in which the anomalous transport coefficients can be extracted from lattice measurements.

Stringy holography at finite density

We consider an exactly solvable worldsheet string theory in the background of a black brane with a gauge field flux. Holographically, such a system can be interpreted as a field theory with finite number of degrees of freedom at finite temperature and density. This is to be contrasted with more conventional holographic models which involve gravity in the bulk and possess infinite number of degrees of freedom and mean field critical exponents. We construct closed string vertex operators which holographically represent the U(1) gauge field and the stress energy tensor and compute their two-point functions. At finite temperature and vanishing charge density the low energy excitations are described by hydrodynamics. As the density is raised, the system behaves like a sum of two noninteracting fluids. We find low-energy excitations in the shear and sound channels of each fluid.

Infra-red expansion of entanglement entropy in the Interacting Resonant Level Model

In this paper we develop a method to describe perturbatively the entanglement entropy in a simple impurity model, the interacting resonant level model (IRLM), at low energy (i.e. in the strong coupling regime). We use integrability results or the Kondo model to describe the infra-red fixed point, conformal field theory techniques initially developped by Cardy and Calabrese and a quantization scheme that allows one to compute exactly Renyi entropies at arbitrary order in $1/T_B$ in principle, even when the system size or the temperature is finite. We show that those universal quantities at arbitrary interaction parameter in the strong coupling regime are very well approximated by the same quantities in the free fermion system in the case of attractive Coulomb interaction, whereas a strong dependence on the interaction appears in the case of repulsive interaction.

Monopoles, confinement and charge localization in the t-J model with dilute holes

We present a quantum field theoretic description on the t$-$J model on a square lattice with dilute holes (i.e. near half-filling), based on the compact mutual Chern-Simons gauge theory. We show that, due to the presence of non-perturbative monopole plasma configuration from the antiferromagnetic background, holons (carrying electric charge) are linearly confined and strongly localized even without extrinsic disorder taken into account. Accordingly, the translation symmetry is spontaneously broken at ground state. Such an exotic localization is distinct from Anderson localization and essentially rooted in intrinsic Mott physics of the t$-$J model. Finally, a finite-temperature phase diagram is proposed. The metal-insulator transition observed in in-plane resistivity measurement is identified to a confinement-deconfinement transition from the perspective of gauge theory. The transition is characterized by the order parameter "Polyakov-line".

Universality, exponents and anomaly cancellation in disordered Dirac fermions

Disordered 2D chiral fermions provide an effective description of several materials including graphene and topological insulators. While previous analysis considered delta correlated disorder and no ultraviolet cut-offs, we consider here the effect of short range correlated disorder and the presence of a momentum cut-off, providing a more realistic description of condensed matter models. We show that the density of states is anomalous with a critical exponent function of the disorder and that conductivity is universal only when the ultraviolet cut-off is removed, as consequence of the supersymmetric cancellation of the anomalies.

Exact steady state manifold of a boundary driven spin-1 Lai-Sutherland chain

We present an explicit construction of a family of steady state density matrices for an open integrable spin-1 chain with bilinear and biquadratic interactions, also known as the Lai-Sutherland model, driven far from equilibrium by means of two oppositely polarizing Markovian dissipation channels localized at the boundary. The steady state solution exhibits n+1 fold degeneracy, for a chain of length n, due to existence of (strong) Liouvillian U(1) symmetry. The latter can be exploited to introduce a chemical potential and define a grand canonical nonequilibrium steady state ensemble. The matrix product form of the solution entails an infinitely-dimensional representation of a non-trivial Lie algebra (semidirect product of sl_2 and a non-nilpotent radical) and hints to a novel Yang-Baxter integrability structure.

Holographic Brownian Motion in 1+1 Dimensions

We study the motion of a stochastic string in the background of a BTZ black hole. In the 1+1 dimensional boundary theory this corresponds to a very heavy external particle (e.g, a quark), interacting with the fields of a CFT at finite temperature, and describing Brownian motion. The equations of motion for a string in the BTZ background can be solved exactly. Thus we can use holographic techniques to obtain the Schwinger-Keldysh Green function for the boundary theory for the force acting on the quark. We write down the generalized Langevin equation describing the motion of the external particle and calculate the drag and the thermal mass shift. Interestingly we obtain dissipation even at zero temperature for this 1+1 system. Even so, this does not violate boost (Lorentz) invariance because the drag force on a constant velocity quark continues to be zero. Furthermore since the Green function is exact, it is possible to write down an effective membrane action, and thus a Langevin equation, located at a "stretched horizon" at an arbitrary finite distance from the horizon.

Magnetic order and transitions in the spin-web compound Cu3TeO6

The spin-web compound Cu3TeO6, belongs to an intriguing group of materials where magnetism is governed by 3d9 copper Cu2+ ions. This compound has been sparsely experimentally studied and we here present the first investigation of its local magnetic properties using muon-spin relaxation/rotation (μ+SR). Our results show a clear long-range 3D magnetic order below TN as indicated by clear zero-field (ZF) muon-precessions. At TN = 61.7 K a very sharp transition is observed in the weak transverse-field (wTF) as well as ZF data. Contrary to suggestions by susceptibility measurements and inelastic neutron scattering, we find no evidence for either static or dynamic (on the time-scale of μ+SR) spin-correlations above TN.

Magnetic order and frustrated dynamics in Li(Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1)O2: a study by μ+SR and SQUID magnetometry

Recently, the mixed transition metal oxides of the form Li(Ni1-y-zCoyMnz)O2, have become the center of attention as promising candidates for novel battery material. These materials have also revealed very interesting magnetic properties due to the alternate stacking of planes of metal oxides on a 2D triangular lattice and the Li-layers. The title compound, Li(Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1)O2, has been investigated by both magnetometry and measurements and μ+SR. We find the evolution of localized magnetic moments with decreasing temperature below 70 K. The magnetic ground state (T = 2 K) is, however, shown to be a frustrated system in 3D, followed by a transition into a possible 2D spinglass above 22 K. With further increasing temperature the compound show the presence of remaining correlations with increasing effective dimensionality all the way up to the ferrimagnetic transition at TC = 70 K.

Intermediate valence behavior in CeCo9Si4

The novel ternary compound CeCo$_9$Si$_4$ has been studied by means of specific heat, magnetisation, and transport measurements. Single crystal X-ray Rietveld refinements reveal a fully ordered distribution of Ce, Co and Si atoms with the tetragonal space group I4/mcm isostructural with other RCo9Si4. The smaller lattice constants of CeCo9Si4 in comparison with the trend established by other RCo9Si4 is indicative for intermediate valence of cerium. While RCo9Si4 with R= Pr, .. Tb, and Y show ferromagnetism and LaCo9Si4 is nearly ferromagnetic, CeCo9Si4 remains paramagnetic even in external fields as large as 40 T, though its electronic specific heat coefficient (g~190 mJ/molK^2) is of similar magnitude as that of metamagnetic LaCo9Si4 and weakly ferromagnetic YCo9Si4.

Weak itinerant ferromagnetism in YCo9Si4

Weak itinerant ferromagnetism in YCo9Si4 below about 25 K is studied by means of magnetisation, specific heat, and resistivity measurements. Single crystal X-ray Rietveld refinements at room temperature reveal a fully ordered distribution of Y, Co and Si atoms within the tetragonal space group I4/mcm isostructural with LaCo9Si4. The latter exhibits itinerant electron metamagnetism with an induced moment of about 1 mu_B/f.u. above 6 T, whereas YCo9Si4 exhibits a spontaneous magnetisation M0~12 Am^2/kg at 2 K which corresponds to an ordered moment of about 1.6 mu_B/f.u. indicating weak itinerant ferromagnetism.

Theoretical investigation of TbNi_{5-x}Cu_x optical properties

In this paper we present theoretical investigation of optical conductivity for intermetallic TbNi_{5-x}Cu_x series. In the frame of LSDA+U calculations electronic structure for x=0,1,2 and on top of that optical conductivities were calculated. Disorder effects of Ni for Cu substitution on a level of LSDA+U densities of states (DOS) were taken into account via averaging over all possible Cu ion positions for given doping level x. Gradual suppression and loosing of structure of optical conductivity at 2 eV together with simultaneous intensity growth at 4 eV correspond to increase of Cu and decrease of Ni content. As reported before [Knyazev et al., Optics and Spectroscopy 104, 360 (2008)] plasma frequency has non monotonic doping behaviour with maximum at x=1. This behaviour is explained as competition between lowering of total density of states on the Fermi level N(E_F) and growing of number of carriers. Our theoretical results agree well with variety of recent experiments.

Ferromagnetism and transport properties of the Kondo system Ce4Sb1.5Ge1.5

Ferromagnetic ordering with a small magnetic moment is found below 14 K from SQUID measurements for the compound Ce4Sb1.5Ge1.5. The transport characteristics of a number of Ce4Sb3-xTx (T = Ge, Si, Sn, Pb, Al) systems were measured at room temperature, Ce4Sb1.5Ge1.5 demonstrating the highest Seebeck coefficient. Its transport properties (resistivity, thermal conductivity, thermoelectric power) are experimentally investigated in detail up to low temperatures. The Kondo-lattice behavior of resistivity and its anomaly at the ordering point are found. A comparison with the Wiedemann-Franz law is performed.

Kondo spin liquid in Kondo necklace model: Classical disordered phase versus symmetry-protected topological state

We study possible topological features of Kondo spin liquid phase in terms of the one- and two-dimensional Kondo necklace models within the frame work of quantum O(N) non-liner sigma model (NLSM). In the one-dimensional case, it is found that the bulk properties of the Kodno spin liquid phase are similar to the well-known Haldane phase at strong coupling fixed point. The difference between them mainly comes from their boundaries due to the effect of the topological term. In the two-dimensional case, the system can be mapped onto an O(4)-like NLSM with some O(3) anisotropy. Interestingly, we find that if hedgehog-like point defects are included together with the restoration of the full O(4) symmetry, our model is identical to a kind of SU(2) symmetry-protected topological (SPT) state. Additionally, if the system has the O(5) symmetry instead, the effective NLSM with Wess-Zumino-Witten term is just a description of the surface modes of a three-dimensional SPT state, though such O(5) NLSM could not be a proper description of Kondo spin liquid phase due to its gaplessness. We expect that the discussions might provide useful threads to identify certain microscopic bilayer antiferromagnet models (and related materials), which can support the desirable SPT states.
