Aharonov-Bohm-Type Oscillations of Thermopower in a Quantum Dot Ring Geometry

We investigate Aharonov-Bohm-type oscillations of the thermopower of a quantum dot embedded in a ring for the case when the interaction between electrons can be neglected. The thermopower is shown to be strongly flux dependent, and typically the amplitude of oscillations exceeds the background value. It is also shown to be essentially dependent on the phase of the scattering matrix which is determined by the experimental geometry and is not known in the given experiment. Two procedures to compare theory and experiment are proposed.

Voltage-probe and imaginary potential models for dephasing in a chaotic quantum dot

We compare two widely used models for dephasing in a chaotic quantum dot: The introduction of a fictitious voltage probe into the scattering matrix and the addition of an imaginary potential to the Hamiltonian. We identify the limit in which the two models are equivalent and compute the distribution of the conductance in that limit. Our analysis explains why previous treatments of dephasing gave different results. The distribution remains non-Gaussian for strong dephasing if the coupling of the quantum dot to the electron reservoirs is via ballistic single-mode point contacts, but becomes Gaussian if the coupling is via tunneling contacts.

The Magnus force in superfluids and superconductors

The forces on the vortex, transverse to its velocity, are considered. In addition to the superfluid Magnus force from the condensate (superfluid component), there are transverse forces from thermal quasiparticles and external fields violating the translational invariance. The forces between quasiparticles and the vortex originate from interference of quasiparticles with trajectories on the left and on the right from the vortex like similar forces for electrons interacting with the thin magnetic-flux tube (the Aharonov-Bohm effect). These forces are derived in the Born approximation for phonons from the equations of superfluid hydrodynamics, and for BCS quasiparticles from the Bogolyubov-de Gennes equations. The effect of external fields violating translational invariance is analyzed for vortices in the two-dimensional Josephson junction array. The symmetry analysis of the classical equations for the array shows that the total transverse force on the vortex vanishes. Therefore the Hall effect which is linear in the transverse force is absent also. This means that the Magnus force from the superfluid component exactly cancels with the transverse force from the external fields. The results of other approaches are also brought together for discussion.

Quantum and Thermal Depinning of a String from a Linear Defect

The problem of a massive elastic string depinning from a linear defect under the action of a small driving force is considered. To exponential accuracy the decay rate is calculated with the help of the instanton method; then, fluctuations of the quasiclassical solution are taken into account to determine the preexponential factor. The decay rate exhibits a kind of first order transition from quantum tunneling to thermal activation with vanishing crossover region. The model may be applied to describe nucleation in 2-dimensional first order quantum phase transitions.

Theory of the Breakdown of the Quantum Hall Effect

Breakdown of the Quantum Hall Effect at high values of injected current is explained as a consequence of an abrupt formation of a metallic ``river'' percolating from one edge of the sample to the other. Such river is formed when lakes of compressible liquid, where the long-range disorder potential is screened, get connected with each other due to the strong electric field. Our theory predicts critical currents consistent with experiment values and explains various features of the breakdown.

Relaxation of Surface Profiles by Evaporation Dynamics

We present simulations of the relaxation towards equilibrium of one dimensional steps and sinusoidal grooves imprinted on a surface below its roughening transition. We use a generalization of the hypercube stacking model of Forrest and Tang, that allows for temperature dependent next-nearest-neighbor interactions. For the step geometry the results at T=0 agree well with the t^(1/4) prediction of continuum theory for the spreading of the step. In the case of periodic profiles we modify the mobility for the tips of the profile and find the approximate solution of the resulting free boundary problem to be in reasonable agreement with the T=0 simulations.

Long Wavelength Anomalous Diffusion Mode in the 2D XY Dipole Magnet

In 2D XY ferromagnet the dipole force induces a strong interaction between spin-waves in the long-wavelength limit. The major effect of this interaction is the transformation of a propagating spin-wave into a diffusion mode. We study the anomalous dynamics of such diffusion modes. We find that the Janssen-De Dominics functional, which governs this dynamics, approaches the non-Gaussian fixed-point. A spin-wave propagates by an anomalous anisotropic diffusion with the dispersion relation: $iω{\sim}k_{y}^{Δ_y}$ and $iω{\sim}k_{x}^{Δ_x}$, where ${Δ_y}=47/27$ and ${Δ_x}=47/36$. The low-frequency response to the external magnetic field is found.

Magnetic susceptibility of EuTe/PbTe Heisenberg superlattices: experimental and theoretical studies

We report results on the temperature dependence of the susceptibilities of a set of MBE-grown short-period EuTe/PbTe antiferromagnetic superlattices having different EuTe layer thicknesses. In-plane and orthogonal susceptibilities have been measured and display a strong anisotropy at low temperature, confirming the occurrence of a magnetic phase transition in the thicker samples, as seen also in neutron diffraction studies. We suggest that dipolar interactions stabilize antiferromagnetic long-range order in an otherwise isotropic system and we present numerical and analytical results for the low-temperature orthogonal susceptibility.

Density of Neutral Solitons in Weakly Disordered Peierls Chains

We study the effects of weak off-diagonal disorder on Peierls systems with a doubly degenerate ground state. We show that for these systems disorder in the electron hopping amplitudes induces a finite density of solitons in the minimal-energy lattice configuration of a single chain. These disorder-induced dimerization kinks are neutral and have spin 1/2. Using a continuum model for the Peierls chain and treating the lattice classically, we analytically calculate the average free energy and density of kinks. We compare these results to numerical calculations for a discrete model and discuss the implications of the kinks for the optical and magnetic properties of the conjugated polymer trans-polyacetylene.

Fermion loops, loop cancellation and density correlations in two dimensional Fermi systems

We derive explicit results for fermion loops with an arbitrary number of density vertices in two dimensions at zero temperature. The 3-loop is an elementary function of the three external momenta and frequencies, and the N-loop can be expressed as a linear combination of 3-loops with coefficients that are rational functions of momenta and frequencies. We show that the divergencies of single loops for low energy and small momenta cancel each other when loops with permuted external variables are summed. The symmetrized N-loop, i.e. the connected N-point density correlation function of the Fermi gas, does not diverge for low energies and small momenta. In the dynamical limit, where momenta scale to zero at fixed finite energy variables, the symmetrized N-loop vanishes as the (2N-2)-th power of the scale parameter.

Density of Superfluid Helium Droplets

The classical integral cross sections of large superfluid 4He_N droplets and the number of atoms in the droplets (N=10^3-10^4) have been measured in molecular beam scattering experiments. These measurements are found to be in good agreement with the cross sections predicted from density functional calculations of the radial density distributions with a 10-90 % surface thickness of 5.7Å. By using a simple model for the density profile of the droplets a thickness of about 6-8Åis extracted directly from the data.

On the Structure of the Bose-Einstein Condensate Ground State

We construct a macroscopic wave function that describes the Bose-Einstein condensate and weakly excited states, using the su(1,1) structure of the mean-field hamiltonian, and compare this state with the experimental values of second and third order correlation functions.

Thermodynamics of Random Ferromagnetic Antiferromagnetic Spin-1/2 Chains

Using the quantum Monte Carlo Loop algorithm, we calculate the temperature dependence of the uniform susceptibility, the specific heat, the correlation length, the generalized staggered susceptibility and magnetization of a spin-1/2 chain with random antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic couplings, down to very low temperatures. Our data show a consistent scaling behavior in all the quantities and support strongly the conjecture drawn from the approximate real-space renormalization group treatment.A statistical analysis scheme is developed which will be useful for the search of scaling behavior in numerical and experimental data of random spin chains.

Nonlinear acoustic and microwave absorption in disordered semiconductors

Nonlinear hopping absorption of ultrasound and electromagnetic waves in amorphous and doped semiconductors is considered. It is shown that even at low amplitudes of the electric (or acoustic) field the nonlinear corrections to the relaxational absorption appear anomalously large. The physical reason for such behavior is that the nonlinear contribution is dominated by a small group of close impurity pairs having one electron per pair. Since the group is small, it is strongly influenced by the field. An external magnetic field strongly influences the absorption by changing the overlap between the pair components' wave functions. It is important that the influence is substantially different for the linear and nonlinear contributions. This property provides an additional tool to extract nonlinear effects.

Evolution of the Spin Gap Upon Doping a 2-Leg Ladder

The evolution of the spin gap of a 2-leg ladder upon doping depends upon the nature of the lowest triplet excitations in a ladder with two holes. Here we study this evolution using various numerical techniques for a t-t'-J ladder as the next-near-neighbor hopping t' is varied. We find that depending on the value of t', the spin gap can evolve continuously or discontinuously and the lowest triplet state can correspond to a magnon, a bound magnon-hole-pair, or two separate quasi-particles. Previous experimental results on the superconducting two-leg ladder Sr12Ca2Cu24O41 are discussed.

Surface critical exponents at a uniaxial Lifshitz point

Using Monte Carlo techniques, the surface critical behaviour of three-dimensional semi-infinite ANNNI models with different surface orientations with respect to the axis of competing interactions is investigated. Special attention is thereby paid to the surface criticality at the bulk uniaxial Lifshitz point encountered in this model. The presented Monte Carlo results show that the mean-field description of semi-infinite ANNNI models is qualitatively correct. Lifshitz point surface critical exponents at the ordinary transition are found to depend on the surface orientation. At the special transition point, however, no clear dependency of the critical exponents on the surface orientation is revealed. The values of the surface critical exponents presented in this study are the first estimates available beyond mean-field theory.

Surface-reconstructed Icosahedral Structures for Lead Clusters

We describe a new family of icosahedral structures for lead clusters. In general, structures in this family contain a Mackay icosahedral core with a reconstructed two-shell outer-layer. This family includes the anti-Mackay icosahedra, which have have a Mackay icosahedral core but with most of the surface atoms in hexagonal close-packed positions. Using a many-body glue potential for lead, we identify two icosahedral structures in this family which have the lowest energies of any known structure in the size range from 900 to 15000 lead atoms. We show that these structures are stabilized by a feature of the many-body glue part of the interatomic potential.

Resonance shift effects in apertureless scanning near-field optical microscopy

We develop a theory to study apertureless scanning near-field optical microscopy which takes into account retardation, higher multipoles of the tip, and the multiple scattering between the tip and the surface. We focus on metallic systems and discuss the implication of the formation of tip-induced surface plasmon modes in the tip-surface system. We discuss the effects associated with the shift in energy of those modes as a function of the tip-surface distance. Both the local field and the scattering cross section are enhanced when the tip approaches the surface, but there is no general correspondence between the two enhancements.
