Uniformity of the late points of random walk on Z_n^d for d >= 3

Suppose that $X$ is a simple random walk on $\Z_n^d$ for $d \geq 3$ and, for each $t$, we let $\U(t)$ consist of those $x \in \Z_n^d$ which have not been visited by $X$ by time $t$. Let $\tcov$ be the expected amount of time that it takes for $X$ to visit every site of $\Z_n^d$. We show that there exists $0 < α_0(d) \leq α_1(d) < 1$ and a time $t_* = \tcov(1+o(1))$ as $n \to \infty$ such that the following is true. For $α> α_1(d)$ (resp.\ $α< α_0(d)$), the total variation distance between the law of $\U(αt_*)$ and the law of i.i.d.\ Bernoulli random variables indexed by $\Z_n^d$ with success probability~$n^{-αd}$ tends to~$0$ (resp.\ $1$) as $n \to \infty$. Let $τ_α$ be the first time $t$ that $|\U(t)| = n^{d-αd}$. We also show that the total variation distance between the law of $\U(τ_α)$ and the law of a uniformly chosen set from $\Z_n^d$ with size $n^{d-αd}$ tends to $0$ (resp.\ $1$) for $α> α_1(d)$ (resp.\ $α< α_0(d)$) as $n \to \infty$.

Quantum ordering for quantum geodesic functions of orbifold Riemann surfaces

We determine the explicit quantum ordering for a special class of quantum geodesic functions corresponding to geodesics joining exactly two orbifold points or holes on a non-compact Riemann surface. We discuss some special cases in which these quantum geodesic functions form sub--algebras of some abstract algebras defined by the reflection equation and we extend our results to the quantisation of matrix elements of the Fuchsian group associated to the Riemann surface in Poincaré uniformization. In particular we explore an interesting relation between the deformed $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ and the Zhedanov algebra AW(3).

Agmon-type estimates for a class of jump processes

In the limit epsilon to 0 we analyze the generators H_epsilon of families of reversible jump processes in R^d associated with a class of symmetric non-local Dirichlet-forms and show exponential decay of the eigenfunctions. The exponential rate function is a Finsler distance, given as solution of a certain eikonal equation. Fine results are sensitive to the rate function being C^2 or just Lipschitz. Our estimates are analog to the semi-classical Agmon estimates for differential operators of second order. They generalize and strengthen previous results on the lattice epsilon Z^d. Although our final interest is in the (sub)stochastic jump process, technically this is a pure analysis paper, inspired by PDE techniques.

On the algebraic structure of isotropic generalized elasticity theories

In this paper the algebraic structure of the isotropic nth-order gradient elasticity is investigated. In the classical isotropic elasticity it is well-known that the constitutive relation can be broken down into two uncoupled relations between elementary part of the strain and the stress tensors (deviatoric and spherical). In this paper we demonstrate that this result can not be generalized and since 2nd-order isotropic elasticity there exist couplings between elementary parts of higher-order strain and stress tensors. Therefore, and in certain way, nth-order isotropic elasticity have the same kind of algebraic structure as anisotropic classical elasticity. This structure is investigated in the case of 2nd-order isotropic elasticity, and moduli characterizing the behavior are provided.

Dynamics of small solutions in KdV type equations: decay inside the linearly dominated region

In this paper we prove that all small, uniformly in time $L^1\cap H^1$ bounded solutions to KdV and related perturbations must converge to zero, as time goes to infinity, locally in an increasing-in-time region of space of order $t^{1/2}$ around any compact set in space. This set is included in the linearly dominated dispersive region $x\ll t$. Moreover, we prove this result independently of the well-known supercritical character of KdV scattering. In particular, no standing breather-like nor solitary wave structures exists in this particular regime. For the proof, we make use of well-chosen weighted virial identities. The main new idea employed here with respect to previous results is the fact that the $L^1$ integral is subcritical with respect to the KdV scaling.

ϕ^4 Solitary Waves in a Parabolic Potential: Existence, Stability, and Collisional Dynamics

We explore a ϕ^4 model with an added external parabolic potential term. This term dramatically alters the spectral properties of the system. We identify single and multiple kink solutions and examine their stability features; importantly, all of the stationary structures turn out to be unstable. We complement these with a dynamical study of the evolution of a single kink in the trap, as well as of the scattering of kink and anti-kink solutions of the model. We see that some of the key characteristics of kink-antikink collisions, such as the critical velocity and the multi-bounce windows, are sensitively dependent on the trap strength parameter, as well as the initial displacement of the kink and antikink.

Weyl sums and the Lyapunov exponent for the skew-shift Schrödinger cocycle

We study the one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operator with the skew-shift potential $2λ\cos\left(2π\left(\binom{j}{2} ω+jy+x\right)\right)$. This potential is long conjectured to behave like a random one, i.e., it is expected to produce Anderson localization for arbitrarily small coupling constants $λ>0$. In this paper, we introduce a novel perturbative approach for studying the zero-energy Lyapunov exponent $L(λ)$ at small $λ$. Our main results establish that, to second order in perturbation theory, a natural upper bound on $L(λ)$ is fully consistent with $L(λ)$ being positive and satisfying the usual Figotin-Pastur type asymptotics $L(λ)\sim Cλ^2$ as $λ\to 0$. The analogous quantity behaves completely differently in the Almost-Mathieu model, whose zero-energy Lyapunov exponent vanishes for $λ<1$. The main technical work consists in establishing good lower bounds on the exponential sums (quadratic Weyl sums) that appear in our perturbation series.

Stationary states of the cubic conformal flow on $\mathbb{S}^3$

We consider the resonant system of amplitude equations for the conformally invariant cubic wave equation on the three-sphere. Using the local bifurcation theory, we characterize all stationary states that bifurcate from the first two eigenmodes. Thanks to the variational formulation of the resonant system and energy conservation, we also determine variational characterization and stability of the bifurcating states. For the lowest eigenmode, we obtain two orbitally stable families of the bifurcating stationary states: one is a constrained maximizer of energy and the other one is a constrained minimizer of the energy, where the constraints are due to other conserved quantities of the resonant system. For the second eigenmode, we obtain two constrained minimizers of the energy, which are also orbitally stable in the time evolution. All other bifurcating states are saddle points of energy under these constraints and their stability in the time evolution is unknown.

One-point function estimates for loop-erased random walk in three dimensions

In this work, we consider loop-erased random walk (LERW) in three dimensions and give an asymptotic estimate on the one-point function for LERW and the non-intersection probability of LERW and simple random walk in three dimensions for dyadic scales. These estimates will be crucial to the characterization of the convergence of LERW to its scaling limit in natural parametrization. As a step in the proof, we also obtain a coupling of two pairs of LERW and SRW with different starting points conditioned to avoid each other.

Crystal flex bases and the RUM spectrum

A theory of free spanning sets, free bases and their space group symmetric variants is developed for the first order flex spaces of infinite bar-joint frameworks. Such spanning sets and bases are computed for a range of fundamental crystallographic bar-joint frameworks, including the honeycomb (graphene) framework, the octahedron (perovskite) framework and the 2D and 3D kagome frameworks. It is also shown that the existence of crystal flex bases is closely related to linear structure in the rigid unit mode (RUM) spectrum and a more general geometric flex spectrum.

A Non-Local Quasi-Linear Ground State Representation and Criticality Theory

We study energy functionals associated with non-local quasi-linear Schrödinger operators, and develop a ground state representation. Our main focus is on infinite graphs but we also consider non-local quasi-linear Schrödinger operators in the Euclidean space. Using the representation, we develop a criticality theory for quasi-linear Schrödinger operators on general weighted graphs, and show characterisations for a Hardy inequality to hold true. As an application, we show a Liouville comparison principle on graphs.

Chaos for rescaled measures on Kac's sphere

In this article we study a relatively novel way of constructing chaotic sequences of probability measures supported on Kac's sphere, which are obtained as the law of a vector of $N$ i.i.d. variables after it is rescaled to have unit average energy. We show that, as $N$ increases, this sequence is chaotic in the sense of Kac, with respect to the Wasserstein distance, in $L^1$, in the entropic sense, and in the Fisher information sense. For many of these results, we provide explicit rates of polynomial order in $N$. In the process, we improve a quantitative entropic chaos result of Haurey and Mischler by relaxing the finite moment requirement on the densities from order $6$ to $4+ε$.

A modified Fermi Golden Rule at threshold for 3D magnetic Schrödinger operators

In this paper we consider three-dimensional Schrödinger operators with a simple threshold eigenvalue. We show, under certain assumptions, that when a small magnetic field is introduced, this eigenvalue turns into a resonance in the time-dependent sense. We find the leading term in the asymptotic expansion of the imaginary part of the resonance and discuss the principal differences with respect to resonances induced by weak electric fields obtained previously in the literature.

Inertial motion of incompressible continua

We study the inertial motion of incompressible continua within a geometric and variational framework, extending the classical Arnold-Ebin-Marsden theory from the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of a fixed domain to configuration spaces of deformations with variable image. In the latter case, the lack of a group structure requires proving some results that are instead immediate in the classical setting. We show that the orientation-preserving deformations with suitable regularity constitute a Hilbert manifold and that volume-preserving deformations form a submanifold with tangent vectors that are mapped onto divergence-free vector fields by the Lagrangian-to-Eulerian-picture correspondence. In so doing, we also present the geometric structure corresponding to compressible continua. The kinetic energy of the continuum gives rise to both a Lagrangian action, from which the equations of inertial motion are deduced, and a metric, with geodesics that are identified precisely by inertial motions. While the inertial motion can coincide with a physical one only for incompressible perfect fluids, it can be used to provide a natural parametrization of the configuration manifold for generic continua. We obtain a general result of local-in-time existence of solutions for the geodesic flow equation and we present explicit examples showing that, for the same initial data, the geodesic followed by the continuum in the compressible case can leave the manifold of admissible deformations in finite time, while the corresponding incompressible geodesic exists for all times.

Geometric Potential Resulting from Dirac Quantization

A fundamental problem regarding the Dirac quantization of a free particle on an $N-1$ curved hypersurface embedded in $N$($\geq 2$) flat space is the impossibility to give the same form of the curvature-induced quantum potential, the geometric potential as commonly called, as that given by the Schrödinger equation method where the particle moves in a region confined by a thin-layer sandwiching the surface. We resolve this problem by means of previously proposed scheme that hypothesizes a simultaneous quantization of positions, momenta, and Hamiltonian, among which the operator-ordering-free section is identified and is then found sufficient to lead to the expected form of geometric potential.

Parametric representation of wave propagation in nonuniform media (both in transmission and stop bands)

An analytical approach based on the parametric representation of the wave propagation in nonuniform media was considered. In addition to the previously developed theory of parametric antiresonance describing the field attenuation in stop bands, in the present paper the behaviour of the Bloch wave in a transmission band was investigated. A wide class of exact solutions was found and the correspondence to the quasi-periodic Floquet solutions was shown.

Lie Symmetries, Painlevé analysis and global dynamics for the temporal equation of radiating stars

We study the temporal equation of radiating stars by using three powerful methods for the analysis of nonlinear differential equations. Specifically, we investigate the global dynamics for the given master ordinary differential equation to understand the evolution of solutions for various initial conditions as also to investigate the existence of asymptotic solutions. Moreover, with the application of Lie's theory, we can reduce the order of the master differential equation, while an exact similarity solution is determined. Finally, the master equation possesses the Painlevé property, which means that the analytic solution can be expressed in terms of a Laurent expansion.
