Two-photon laser spectroscopy of antiprotonic helium and the antiproton-to-electron mass ratio

Physical laws are believed to be invariant under the combined transformations of charge, parity and time reversal (CPT symmetry). This implies that an antimatter particle has exactly the same mass and absolute value of charge as its particle counterpart. Metastable antiprotonic helium ($\bar{p}{\rm He}^+$) is a three-body atom consisting of a normal helium nucleus, an electron in its ground state and an antiproton ($\bar{p}$) occupying a Rydberg state with high principal and angular momentum quantum numbers, respectively $n$ and $\ell$, such that $n\sim\ell\sim 38$. These atoms are amenable to precision laser spectroscopy, the results of which can in principle be used to determine the antiproton-to-electron mass ratio and to constrain the equality between the antiproton and proton charges and masses. Here we report two-photon spectroscopy of antiprotonic helium, in which $\bar{p}{\rm ^3He^+}$ and $\bar{p}{\rm ^4He^+}$ isotopes are irradiated by two counter-propagating laser beams. This excites nonlinear, two-photon transitions of the antiproton of the type $(n,\ell)\rightarrow (n-2,\ell-2)$ at deep-ultraviolet wavelengths ($λ$=139.8, 193.0 and 197.0nm), which partly cancel the Doppler broadening of the laser resonance caused by the thermal motion of the atoms. The resulting narrow spectral lines allowed us to measure three transition frequencies with fractional precisions of 2.3-5 parts in $10^9$. By comparing the results with three-body quantum electrodynamics calculations, we derived an antiproton-to-electron mass ratio of 1,836.1526736(23), where the parenthetical error represents one standard deviation. This agrees with the proton-to-electron value known to a similar precision.

Search for Majorana neutrinos with the first two years of EXO-200 data

Many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics suggest that neutrinos should be Majorana-type fermions, but this assumption is difficult to confirm. Observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0νββ$), a spontaneous transition that may occur in several candidate nuclei, would verify the Majorana nature of the neutrino and constrain the absolute scale of the neutrino mass spectrum. Recent searches carried out with $^{76}$Ge (GERDA experiment) and $^{136}$Xe (KamLAND-Zen and EXO-200 experiments) have established the lifetime of this decay to be longer than $10^{25}$ yr, corresponding to a limit on the neutrino mass of 0.2-0.4 eV. Here we report new results from EXO-200 based on 100 kg$\cdot$yr of $^{136}$Xe exposure, representing an almost fourfold increase from our earlier published datasets. We have improved the detector resolution at the $^{136}$Xe double-beta-decay Q-value to $σ$/E = 1.53% and revised the data analysis. The obtained half-life sensitivity is $1.9\cdot10^{25}$ yr, an improvement by a factor of 2.7 compared to previous EXO-200 results. We find no statistically significant evidence for $0νββ$ decay and set a half-life limit of $1.1\cdot10^{25}$ yr at 90% CL. The high sensitivity holds promise for further running of the EXO-200 detector and future $0νββ$ decay searches with nEXO.

Search for eta-mesic Helium with the WASA-at-COSY detector

A search for the 4He-eta bound state via exclusive measurement of the excitation function for the dd->3Heppi- reaction, was performed at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY-Juelich with the WASA-at-COSY detection system. The data were taken during a slow acceleration of the beam from 2.185 GeV/c to 2.400 GeV/c crossing the kinematic threshold for the eta production in the dd -> 4He-eta reaction at 2.336 GeV/c. The corresponding excess energy in the 4He-eta system varied from -51.4 MeV to 22 MeV. The shape of the excitation function for the dd -> 3Heppi- was examined. No signal of the 4He-eta bound state was observed in the excitation function.

Sequential fissions of heavy nuclear systems

In Xe+Sn central collisions from 12 to 20 MeV/A measured with the INDRA 4$π$ multidetector, the three-fragment exit channel occurs with a significant cross section. In this contribution, we show that these fragments arise from two successive binary splittings of a heavy composite system. Strong Coulomb proximity effects are observed in the three-fragment final state. By comparison with Coulomb trajectory calculations, we show that the time scale between the consecutive break-ups decreases with increasing bombarding energy, becoming compatible with quasi-simultaneous multifragmentation above 18 MeV/A.

Search for 2β decay of 116Cd with the help of enriched 116CdWO4 crystal scintillators

Cadmium tungstate crystal scintillators enriched in $^{116}$Cd to 82% ($^{116}$CdWO$_4$, total mass of $\approx$1.2 kg) are used to search for 2$β$ decay of $^{116}$Cd deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the INFN (Italy). The radioactive contamination of the $^{116}$CdWO$_4$ crystals has been studied carefully to reconstruct the background of the detector. The measured half-life of $^{116}$Cd relatively to 2$ν$2$β$ decay is $T^{2\nu2β}_{1/2}$ = [2.8 $\pm$ 0.05(stat.) $\pm$ 0.4(syst.)] $\times$ 10$^{19}$ yr, in agreement with the results of previous experiments. The obtained limit on the 0$ν$2$β$ decay of $^{116}$Cd (considering the data of the last 8696 h run with an advanced background 0.12(2) counts/yr/kg/keV in the energy interval 2.7-2.9 MeV) is $T_{1/2} \ge 1.0 \times 10^{23}$ yr at 90% C.L. The sensitivity of the experiment to the $0\nu2β$ process is $\lim T_{1/2} = 3 \times 10^{23}$ yr at 90% C.L. over 5 years of the measurements and it can be advanced (by further reduction of the background by a factor 3-30) to the level of $\lim T_{1/2} = (0.5-1.5) \times 10^{24}$ yr for the same period of the data taking.

Nuclear charge-exchange excitations in localized covariant density functional theory

The recent progress in the studies of nuclear charge-exchange excitations with localized covariant density functional theory is briefly presented, by taking the fine structure of spin-dipole excitations in 16O as an example. It is shown that the constraints introduced by the Fock terms of the relativistic Hartree-Fock scheme into the particle-hole residual interactions are straightforward and robust.

Feasibility of the Spin-Light Polarimetry Technique for Longitudinally Polarized Electron Beams

A novel polarimeter based on the asymmetry in the spacial distribution of synchrotron radiation will make for a fine addition to the existing Møller and Compton polarimeters. The spin light polarimeter consists of a set of wiggler magnet along the beam that generate synchrotron radiation. The spacial distribution of synchrotron radiation will be measured by ionization chambers. The up-down (below and above the wiggle) spacial asymmetry in the transverse plain is used to quantify the polarization of the beam. As a part of the design process, effects of a realistic wiggler magnetic field and an extended beam size were studied. The perturbation introduced by these effects was found to be negligible. Lastly, a full fledged GEANT-4 simulation was built to study the response of the ionization chamber.

A covariant model for the $γ^\ast N \to N^\ast(1520)$ reaction

We apply the covariant spectator quark model to the study of the electromagnetic structure of the $N^\ast(1520)$ state ($J^{P}= \frac{3}{2}^-$), an important resonance from the second resonance region in both spacelike and timelike regimes. The contributions from the valence quark effects are calculated for the $γ^\ast N \to N^\ast(1520)$ helicity amplitudes. The results are used to parametrize the meson cloud dominant at low $Q^2$.

Measurement of J/$ψ$ production as a function of multiplicity in pp and p-Pb collisions with ALICE

The increase of hard probe production as a function of the charged particle multiplicity in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions is considered to be an interesting observable for the study of multiple parton interactions. In the present work, the correlation between J/$ψ$ production and charged particle multiplicity has been reviewed in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ and 13 TeV and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at mid- and forward rapidities. The J/$ψ$ measurement in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using events triggered by the ALICE electromagnetic calorimeter at midrapidity is discussed in this report, too. An increment of the relative J/$ψ$ yields has been observed as a function of the multiplicity. The results have also been compared to theoretical model predictions.

Off-of-equilibrium effects on Kurtosis Along Strangeness-Neutral Trajectories

The Beam Energy Scan program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is searching for the QCD critical point. The main signal for the critical point is the kurtosis of the distribution of proton yields obtained on an event-by-event basis where one expects a peak at the critical point. However, its exact behavior is still an open question due to out-of-equilibrium effects and uncertainty in the equation of state. Here we use a simplistic hydrodynamic model that enforces strangeness-neutrality, selecting trajectories that pass close to the critical point. We vary the initial conditions to estimate the effect of out-of-equilibrium hydrodynamics on the kurtosis signal.

Jefferson Lab's results on the Q^2-evolution of moments of spin structure functions

We present the recent JLab measurements on moments of spin structure functions at intermediate and low Q^2. The Bjorken sum and Burkhardt-Cottingham sum on the neutron are presented. The later appears to hold. Higher moments (generalized spin polarizabilities and d_2^n) are shown and compared to chiral perturbation theory and lattice QCD respectively.

NEUT Pion Final State Interactions

The pion final state interaction model in NEUT is described. Modifications and tuning of the model are validated against neutrino and non-neutrino (pion scattering and photoproduction) data. A method for evaluating the uncertainties in the model and propagation of systematic errors in a neutrino oscillation experiment is described, using T2K as a specific example.

Removal of long-lived $^{222}$Rn daughters by electropolishing thin layers of stainless steel

Long-lived alpha and beta emitters in the $^{222}$Rn decay chain on detector surfaces may be the limiting background in many experiments attempting to detect dark matter or neutrinoless double-beta decay. Removal of tens of microns of material via electropolishing has been shown to be effective at removing radon daughters implanted into material surfaces. Some applications, however, require the removal of uniform and significantly smaller thicknesses. Here, we demonstrate that electropolishing < 1 $μ$m from stainless-steel plates reduces the contamination efficiently, by a factor > 100. Examination of electropolished wires with a scanning electron microscope confirms that the thickness removed is reproducible and reasonably uniform. Together, these tests demonstrate the effectiveness of removal of radon daughters for a proposed low-radiation, multi-wire proportional chamber (the BetaCage), without compromising the screener's energy resolution. More generally, electropolishing thin layers of stainless steel may effectively remove radon daughters without compromising precision-machined parts.

Strange Quark Contribution to the Nucleon Spin from Electroweak Elastic Scattering Data

The total contribution of strange quarks to the intrinsic spin of the nucleon can be determined from a measurement of the strange-quark contribution to the nucleon's elastic axial form factor. We have studied the strangeness contribution to the elastic vector and axial form factors of the nucleon, using elastic electroweak scattering data. Specifically, we combine elastic $νp$ and $\barν p$ scattering cross section data from the Brookhaven E734 experiment with elastic $ep$ and quasi-elastic $ed$ and $e$-$^4$He scattering parity-violating asymmetry data from the SAMPLE, HAPPEx, G0 and PVA4 experiments. We have not only determined these form factors at individual values of momentum-transfer ($Q^2$), but also have fit the $Q^2$-dependence of these form factors using simple functional forms. We present the results of these fits, along with some expectations of how our knowledge of these form factors can be improved with data from Fermilab experiments.

Weak Interaction Studies with 6He

The 6He nucleus is an ideal candidate to study the weak interaction. To this end we have built a high-intensity source of 6He delivering ~10^10 atoms/s to experiments. Taking full advantage of that available intensity we have performed a high-precision measurement of the 6He half-life that directly probes the axial part of the nuclear Hamiltonian. Currently, we are preparing a measurement of the beta-neutrino angular correlation in 6He beta decay that will allow to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model in the form of tensor currents.
