The Chaplygin Gas Equation of State for the Quantized Free Scalar Field on Cosmological Spacetimes

We try to answer the question whether the quantized free scalar field on a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetime is a matter model that can induce a Chaplygin gas equation of state. For this purpose we first describe how one can obtain every possible homogeneous and isotropic Hadamard (HIH) state once any such state is given. We also identify a condition on the scale factor sufficient to entail the existence of a simple HIH state $-$ this state is constructed explicitly and can thence be used as a starting point for constructing all HIH states. Furthermore, we employ these results to show that on an FRW spacetime with non-positive constant scalar curvature there is, with one exception, no Chaplygin gas equation of state compatible with any HIH state. Finally, we argue that the semi-classical Einstein equation and the Chaplygin gas equation of state can presumably not be consistently solved for the quantized free scalar field.

Large Strebel graphs and $(3,2)$ Liouville CFT

2D quantum gravity is the idea that a set of discretized surfaces (called map, a graph on a surface), equipped with a graph measure, converges in the large size limit (large number of faces) to a conformal field theory (CFT), and in the simplest case to the simplest CFT known as pure gravity, also known as the gravity dressed (3,2) minimal model. Here we consider the set of planar Strebel graphs (planar trivalent metric graphs) with fixed perimeter faces, with the measure product of Lebesgue measure of all edge lengths, submitted to the perimeter constraints. We prove that expectation values of a large class of observables indeed converge towards the CFT amplitudes of the (3,2) minimal model.

Extended Riemannian Geometry I: Local Double Field Theory

We present an extended version of Riemannian geometry suitable for the description of current formulations of double field theory (DFT). This framework is based on graded manifolds and it yields extended notions of symmetries, dynamical data and constraints. In special cases, we recover general relativity with and without 1-, 2- and 3-form gauge potentials as well as DFT. We believe that our extended Riemannian geometry helps to clarify the role of various constructions in DFT. For example, it leads to a covariant form of the strong section condition. Furthermore, it should provide a useful step towards global and coordinate invariant descriptions of T- and U-duality invariant field theories.

Parabolic Type Equations and Markov Stochastic Processes on Adeles

In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for new classes of parabolic type pseudodifferential equations over the rings of finite adeles and adeles. We show that the adelic topology is metrizable and give an explicit metric. We find explicit representations of the fundamental solutions (the heat kernels). These fundamental solutions are transition functions of Markov processes which are adelic analogues of the Archimedean Brownian motion. We show that the Cauchy problems for these equations are well-posed and find explicit representations of the evolution semigroup and formulas for the solutions of homogeneous and non-homogeneous equations.

Gauge Transformations, Twisted Poisson Brackets and Hamiltonization of Nonholonomic Systems

In this paper we study the problem of Hamiltonization of nonholonomic systems from a geometric point of view. We use gauge transformations by 2-forms (in the sense of Severa and Weinstein [29]) to construct different almost Poisson structures describing the same nonholonomic system. In the presence of symmetries, we observe that these almost Poisson structures, although gauge related, may have fundamentally different properties after reduction, and that brackets that Hamiltonize the problem may be found within this family. We illustrate this framework with the example of rigid bodies with generalized rolling constraints, including the Chaplygin sphere rolling problem. We also see how twisted Poisson brackets appear naturally in nonholonomic mechanics through these examples.

Construction of the Pauli-Villars-regulated Dirac vacuum in electromagnetic fields

Using the Pauli-Villars regularization and arguments from convex analysis, we construct solutions to the classical time-independent Maxwell equations in Dirac's vacuum, in the presence of small external electromagnetic sources. The vacuum is not an empty space, but rather a quantum fluctuating medium which behaves as a nonlinear polarizable material. Its behavior is described by a Dirac equation involving infinitely many particles. The quantum corrections to the usual Maxwell equations are nonlinear and nonlocal. Even if photons are described by a purely classical electromagnetic field, the resulting vacuum polarization coincides to first order with that of full Quantum Electrodynamics.

On the Rigorous Derivation of the 3D Cubic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation with A Quadratic Trap

We consider the dynamics of the 3D N-body Schrödinger equation in the presence of a quadratic trap. We assume the pair interaction potential is N^{3β-1}V(N^{β}x). We justify the mean-field approximation and offer a rigorous derivation of the 3D cubic NLS with a quadratic trap. We establish the space-time bound conjectured by Klainerman and Machedon [30] for β in (0,2/7] by adapting and simplifying an argument in Chen and Pavlović [7] which solves the problem for β in (0,1/4) in the absence of a trap.

Exact solution of a 2D interacting fermion model

We study an exactly solvable quantum field theory (QFT) model describing interacting fermions in 2+1 dimensions. This model is motivated by physical arguments suggesting that it provides an effective description of spinless fermions on a square lattice with local hopping and density-density interactions if, close to half filling, the system develops a partial energy gap. The necessary regularization of the QFT model is based on this proposed relation to lattice fermions. We use bosonization methods to diagonalize the Hamiltonian and to compute all correlation functions. We also discuss how, after appropriate multiplicative renormalizations, all short- and long distance cutoffs can be removed. In particular, we prove that the renormalized two-point functions have algebraic decay with non-trivial exponents depending on the interaction strengths, which is a hallmark of Luttinger-liquid behavior.

Landauer-Büttiker formula and Schrödinger conjecture

We study the entropy flux in the stationary state of a finite one-dimensional sample S connected at its left and right ends to two infinitely extended reservoirs at distinct temperatures T1, T2 and chemical potentials mu1, mu2. The sample is a free lattice Fermi gas confined to a box [0, L] with energy operator -Δ+ v. The Landauer-Büttiker formula expresses the steady state entropy flux in the coupled system in terms of scattering data. We study the behavior of this steady state entropy flux in the limit L->infinity and relate persistence of transport to norm bounds on the transfer matrices of the limiting half-line Schrödinger operator h. A natural conjecture is that the set of energies at which transport persists in this limit is precisely the essential support of the absolutely continuous spectrum of h. We show that this conjecture is equivalent to the Schrödinger conjecture in spectral theory of one-dimensional Schrödinger operators, thus giving a physically appealing interpretation to the Schrödinger conjecture.

Cylindric versions of specialised Macdonald functions and a deformed Verlinde algebra

We define cylindric generalisations of skew Macdonald functions when one of their parameters is set to zero. We define these functions as weighted sums over cylindric skew tableaux: fixing two integers n>2 and k>0 we shift an ordinary skew diagram of two partitions, viewed as a subset of the two-dimensional integer lattice, by the period vector (n,-k). Imposing a periodicity condition one defines cylindric skew tableaux as a map from the periodically continued skew diagram into the integers. The resulting cylindric Macdonald functions appear in the coproduct of a commutative Frobenius algebra, which is a particular quotient of the spherical Hecke algebra. We realise this Frobenius algebra as a commutative subalgebra in the endomorphisms over a Kirillov-Reshetikhin module of the quantum affine sl(n) algebra. Acting with special elements of this subalgebra, which are noncommutative analogues of Macdonald polynomials, on a highest weight vector, one obtains Lusztig's canonical basis. In the limit q=0, one recovers the sl(n) Verlinde algebra, i.e. the structure constants of the Frobenius algebra become the WZNW fusion coefficients which are known to be dimensions of moduli spaces of generalized theta-functions and multiplicities of tilting modules of quantum groups at roots of unity. Further motivation comes from exactly solvable lattice models in statistical mechanics: the cylindric Macdonald functions arise as partition functions of so-called vertex models obtained from solutions to the quantum Yang-Baxter equation. We show this by stating explicit bijections between cylindric tableaux and lattice configurations of non-intersecting paths. Using the algebraic Bethe ansatz the idempotents of the Frobenius algebra are computed.

Phase transition and level-set percolation for the Gaussian free field

We consider level-set percolation for the Gaussian free field on Z^d, with d bigger or equal to 3, and prove that there is a non-trivial critical level h_* such that for h > h_*, the excursion set above level h does not percolate, and for h < h_*, the excursion set does percolate. It is known from the work of Bricmont-Lebowitz-Maes that h_* is non-negative for all d bigger or equal to 3, and finite, when d=3. We prove here that h_* is finite for all d bigger or equal to 3. In fact, we introduce a second critical parameter h_**, which is bigger or equal to h_*. We show that h_** is finite for all d bigger or equal to 3, and that the connectivity function of the excursion set above level h has stretched exponential decay for all h > h_**. Finally we prove that h_* > 0 in high dimension. It remains open whether h_* and h_** actually coincide, and whether h_* > 0 for all d bigger or equal to 3.

Cosmic censorship of smooth structures

It is observed that on many 4-manifolds there is a unique smooth structure underlying a globally hyperbolic Lorentz metric. For instance, every contractible smooth 4-manifold admitting a globally hyperbolic Lorentz metric is diffeomorphic to the standard $\R^4$. Similarly, a smooth 4-manifold homeomorphic to the product of a closed oriented 3-manifold $N$ and $\R$ and admitting a globally hyperbolic Lorentz metric is in fact diffeomorphic to $N\times \R$. Thus one may speak of a censorship imposed by the global hyperbolicty assumption on the possible smooth structures on $(3+1)$-dimensional spacetimes.

Inhomogeneous Vortex Patterns in Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensates

We consider a 2D rotating Bose gas described by the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) theory and investigate the properties of the ground state of the theory for rotational speeds close to the critical speed for vortex nucleation. While one could expect that the vortex distribution should be homogeneous within the condensate we prove by means of an asymptotic analysis in the strongly interacting (Thomas-Fermi) regime that it is not. More precisely we rigorously derive a formula due to Sheehy and Radzihovsky [Phys. Rev. A 70, 063620(R) (2004)] for the vortex distribution, a consequence of which is that the vortex distribution is strongly inhomogeneous close to the critical speed and gradually homogenizes when the rotation speed is increased. From the mathematical point of view, a novelty of our approach is that we do not use any compactness argument in the proof, but instead provide explicit estimates on the difference between the vorticity measure of the GP ground state and the minimizer of a certain renormalized energy functional.

The geometry of antiferromagnetic spin chains

We construct spin chains that describe relativistic sigma-models in the continuum limit, using symplectic geometry as a main tool. The target space can be an arbitrary complex flag manifold, and we find universal expressions for the metric and theta-term.

How to add a boundary condition

Given a conformal QFT local net of von Neumann algebras B_2 on the two-dimensional Minkowski spacetime with irreducible subnet A\otimes\A, where A is a completely rational net on the left/right light-ray, we show how to consistently add a boundary to B_2: we provide a procedure to construct a Boundary CFT net B of von Neumann algebras on the half-plane x>0, associated with A, and locally isomorphic to B_2. All such locally isomorphic Boundary CFT nets arise in this way. There are only finitely many locally isomorphic Boundary CFT nets and we get them all together. In essence, we show how to directly redefine the C* representation of the restriction of B_2 to the half-plane by means of subfactors and local conformal nets of von Neumann algebras on S^1.

Distinguishing multi-partite states by local measurements

We analyze the distinguishability norm on the states of a multi-partite system, defined by local measurements. Concretely, we show that the norm associated to a tensor product of sufficiently symmetric measurements is essentially equivalent to a multi-partite generalisation of the non-commutative 2-norm (aka Hilbert-Schmidt norm): in comparing the two, the constants of domination depend only on the number of parties but not on the Hilbert spaces dimensions. We discuss implications of this result on the corresponding norms for the class of all measurements implementable by local operations and classical communication (LOCC), and in particular on the leading order optimality of multi-party data hiding schemes.

Asymptotics for products of characteristic polynomials in classical $β$-Ensembles

We study the local properties of eigenvalues for the Hermite (Gaussian), Laguerre (Chiral) and Jacobi $β$-ensembles of $N\times N$ random matrices. More specifically, we calculate scaling limits of the expectation value of products of characteristic polynomials as $N\to\infty$. In the bulk of the spectrum of each $β$-ensemble, the same scaling limit is found to be $e^{p_{1}}{}_1F_{1}$ whose exact expansion in terms of Jack polynomials is well known. The scaling limit at the soft edge of the spectrum for the Hermite and Laguerre $β$-ensembles is shown to be a multivariate Airy function, which is defined as a generalized Kontsevich integral. As corollaries, when $β$ is even, scaling limits of the $k$-point correlation functions for the three ensembles are obtained. The asymptotics of the multivariate Airy function for large and small arguments is also given. All the asymptotic results rely on a generalization of Watson's lemma and the steepest descent method for integrals of Selberg type.

Limits of spiked random matrices I

Given a large, high-dimensional sample from a spiked population, the top sample covariance eigenvalue is known to exhibit a phase transition. We show that the largest eigenvalues have asymptotic distributions near the phase transition in the rank-one spiked real Wishart setting and its general beta analogue, proving a conjecture of Baik, Ben Arous and Péché (2005). We also treat shifted mean Gaussian orthogonal and beta ensembles. Such results are entirely new in the real case; in the complex case we strengthen existing results by providing optimal scaling assumptions. One obtains the known limiting random Schrödinger operator on the half-line, but the boundary condition now depends on the perturbation. We derive several characterizations of the limit laws in which beta appears as a parameter, including a simple linear boundary value problem. This PDE description recovers known explicit formulas at beta=2,4, yielding in particular a new and simple proof of the Painlevé representations for these Tracy-Widom distributions.
