A note on the coupling of the techni-dilaton to the weak bosons

In this note, we study the coupling of the techni-dilaton to the weak bosons. We consider two cases: (1) The dilaton directly couples to the weak bosons similarly to the SM. (2) The coupling in question is effectively induced only through the techni-fermion loops. In both cases, we find that the coupling is essentially determined by the mass-squared of the weak bosons over the dilaton decay constant.

An upper limit on electron antineutrino mass from Troitsk experiment

An electron antineutrino mass has been measured in tritium beta-decay in the "Troitsk nu-mass" experiment. The setup consists of a windowless gaseous tritium source and an electrostatic electron spectrometer. The whole data set acquired from 1994 to 2004 was reanalysed. A thorough selection of data with the reliable experimental conditions has been performed. We checked every known systematic effect and got the following experimental estimate for neutrino mass squared m_{nu}^{2}=-0.67+/- 2.53 {eV}^{2}. This gives an experimental upper sensitivity limit of m_{nu}<2.2 eV and upper limit estimates m_{nu}<2.12 eV, 95% C.L. for Bayesian statistics and m_{nu}<2.05 eV, 95% C.L. for the Feldman and Cousins approach.

Relativistic descriptions of final-state interactions in neutral-current neutrino-nucleus scattering at MiniBooNE kinematics

The analysis of the recent neutral-current neutrino-nucleus scattering cross sections measured by the MiniBooNE Collaboration requires relativistic theoretical descriptions also accounting for the role of final state interactions. In this work we evaluate differential cross sections with the relativistic distorted-wave impulse-approximation and with the relativistic Green's function model to investigate the sensitivity to final state interactions. The role of the strange-quark content of the nucleon form factors is also discussed.

A new determination of α_s from hadronic τ decays

We present a new framework for the extraction of the strong coupling from hadronic τdecays through finite-energy sum rules. Our focus is on the small, but still significant non-perturbative effects that, in principle, affect both the central value and the systematic error. We employ a quantitative model in order to accommodate violations of quark-hadron duality, and enforce a consistent treatment of the higher-dimensional contributions of the Operator Product Expansion to our sum rules. Using 1998 OPAL data for the non-strange isovector vector and axial-vector spectral functions, we find the n_f=3 values α_s(m_τ^2)=0.307+-0.019 in fixed-order perturbation theory, and 0.322+-0.026 in contour-improved perturbation theory. For comparison, the original OPAL analysis of the same data led to the values 0.324+-0.014 (fixed-order) and 0.348+-0.021 (contour-improved).

Non-Standard Neutrino Interactions at Colliders

Many extensions of the Standard Model lead to non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI), which can affect the interpretation of current and future neutrino data. We explore an alternative approach to the study of these dimension eight four fermion interactions (of coefficient $4 εG_F/\sqrt{2}$), by bringing into play collider data. In models where coefficients of potential dimension six operators are suppressed by cancellations, LEP2 provides interesting bounds on NSI operators ($ε\lsim 10^{-2} - 10^{-3}$). If NSI are contact interactions at LHC energies, they induce an effective interaction $\bar{q} q W^+W^- e_\a^+ e_\b^-$(according to the Equivalence Theorem), to which the LHC at 14 TeV and with 100 fb$^{-1}$ of data has excellent sensitivity ($ε\gsim 3 \times 10^{-3}$).

An Effective Z'

We describe a method to couple Z' gauge bosons to the standard model (SM), without charging the SM fields under the U(1)', but instead through effective higher dimension operators. This method allows complete control over the tree-level couplings of the Z' and does not require altering the structure of any of the SM couplings, nor does it contain anomalies or require introduction of fields in non-standard SM representations. Moreover, such interactions arise from simple renormalizable extensions of the SM - the addition of vector-like matter that mixes with SM fermions when the U(1)' is broken. We apply effective Z' models as explanations of various recent anomalies: the D0 same-sign dimuon asymmetry, the CDF W+di-jet excess and the CDF top forward-backward asymmetry. In the case of the W+di-jet excess we also discuss several complementary analyses that may shed light on the nature of the discrepancy. We consider the possibility of non-Abelian groups, and discuss implications for the phenomenology of dark matter as well.

Measurement of the relative branching ratio of B^0_s to J/psi f_{0}(980) to B_{s}{0} to J/psi phi

We present a measurement of the relative branching fraction, R_{f_{0}/phi}, of B_{s}^{0} to J/ψf_{0}(980), with f_{0}(980) to pi^+ pi^-, to the process B_{s}^{0} to J/psi phi, with phi to K^+K^-. The J/psi f_{0}(980) final state corresponds to a CP-odd eigenstate of B_{s}^{0} that could be of interest in future studies of CP violation. Using approximately 8fb^-1 of data recorded with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, we find R_{f_{0}/phi} = 0.275 +- 0.041(stat) +- 0.061(syst).

Measurement of CP--violating asymmetries in D0 --> pi+ pi- and D0 --> K+K- decays at CDF

We report on a measurement of CP-violating asymmetries (Acp) in the Cabibbo-suppressed D0 --> pi+ pi- and D0 --> K+K- decays reconstructed in a data sample corresponding to 5.9 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab. We use the strong decay D*+ --> D0 pi+ to identify the flavor of the charmed meson at production and exploit CP-conserving strong c-cbar pair-production in p-pbar collisions. High-statistics samples of Cabibbo-favored D0 --> K- p+ decays with and without a D* tag are used to correct for instrumental effects and significantly reduce systematic uncertainties. We measure Acp(D0 --> pi+ pi-) = (+0.22 +- 0.24 (stat) +- 0.11 (syst))% and Acp(D 0 --> K+ K-) = (-0.24 +- 0.22 (stat) +- 0.09 (syst))%, in agreement with CP conservation. These are the most precise determinations from a single experiment to date. Under the assumption of negligible direct CP violation in D0 --> pi+ pi- and D0 --> K+K- decays, the results provide an upper limit to the CP-violating asymmetry in D0 mixing, |Acp^{ind}(D0)|< 0.13% at the 90% confidence level.

Observability of an induced electric dipole moment of the neutron from nonlinear QED

It has been shown recently that a neutron placed in an external quasistatic electric field develops an induced electric dipole moment $\mathbf{p}_{\mathrm{IND}}$ due to quantum fluctuations in the QED vacuum. A feasible experiment which could detect such an effect is proposed and described here. It is shown that the peculiar angular dependence of $\mathbf{p}_{\mathrm{IND}}$ on the orientation of the neutron spin leads to a characteristic asymmetry in polarized neutron scattering by heavy nuclei. This asymmetry can be of the order of $10^{-3}$ for neutrons with epithermal energies. For thermalized neutrons from a hot moderator one still expects experimentally accessible values of the order of $10^{-4}$. The contribution of the induced effect to the neutron scattering length is expected to be only one order of magnitude smaller than that due to the neutron polarizability from its quark substructure. The experimental observation of this scattering asymmetry would be the first ever signal of nonlinearity in electrodynamics due to quantum fluctuations in the QED vacuum.

Limits on Electron Neutrino Disappearance from the KARMEN and LSND electron neutrino - Carbon Cross Section Data

This paper presents a combined analysis of the KARMEN and LSND nu_e-carbon cross section measurements within the context of a search for nu_e disappearance at high Delta m^2. KARMEN and LSND were located at 17.7 m and 29.8 m respectively from the neutrino source, so the consistency of the two measurements, as a function of antineutrino energy, sets strong limits on neutrino oscillations. Most of the allowed region from the nu_e disappearance analysis of the Gallium calibration data is excluded at >95% CL and the best fit point is excluded at 3.6$σ$. Assuming CPT conservation, comparisons are also made to the oscillation analyses of reactor antineutrino data.

Light 2++ and 0++ mesons

The status of light I=0, J^{PC}=2^{++} and 0^{++} mesons is discussed, particularly the separation of n-nbar and s-sbar states. They fall into a simple scheme except for f_2(1810). A case is made that this has been confused with the f_0(1790). It should be possible to check this with existing or forthcoming data.

Probing Quartic Neutral Gauge Boson Couplings using diffractive photon fusion at the LHC

A complete list of operators contributing at the lowest order to Quartic Neutral Gauge Boson Couplings involving photons and Z-bosons, is presented. We show that, for the couplings we consider, the lowest order contribution is from dimension 8 operators in the case when a light Higgs is present and from dimension 6 operators in the higgsless case where electroweak symmetry is non-linearly realized. We also show that these operators are generated by exchange of the Kaluza-Klein partners of the graviton in extra-dimensional models. We then explore the possibility of probing these couplings in the diffractive photon fusion processes pp(γγ\to γγ)pp and pp(γγ\to ZZ)pp at the 14 TeV LHC. We find that the γγγγ-coupling can be probed most sensitively and values as small as 1/(1.8 TeV)^{4} can be measured. For the γγZZ-coupling, values as small as 1/(850 GeV)^{4} and 1/(1.9 TeV)^2 can be probed in the light Higgs and higgsless cases respectively, which is an improvement by orders of magnitude over existing limits.

Form Factors for Lambda_b -> Lambda Transitions in SCET

We present a systematic discussion of Lambda_b -> Lambda transition form factors in the framework of soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). The universal soft form factor, which enters the symmetry relations in the limit of large recoil energy, is calculated from a sum-rule analysis of a suitable SCET correlation function. The same method is applied to derive the leading corrections from hard-collinear gluon exchange at first order in the strong coupling constant. We present numerical estimates for form factors and form-factor ratios and their impact on decay observables in Lambda_b -> Lambda mu^+ mu^- decays.

Positronium oscillations to Mirror World revisited

We present a calculation of the branching ratio of orthopositronium decay into an invisible mode, which is done in the context of Mirror World models, where ordinary positronium can disappear from our world due to oscillation into its mirror twin. In this revision we clarify some formulas and approximations used previously, correct them at some places, add new effects relevant for a feasible experiment and finally perform a combined analysis. We include into consideration various effects due to external magnetic and electric fields, collisions with cavity walls and scattering off gas atoms in the cavity. Oscillations of the Rydberg positroniums are also considered. To perform a numerical estimates in a realistic case we wrote computer code, which can be adopted in any experimental setup. Its work is illustrated with an example of a planned positronium experiment within the AEgIS project.

Dilaton at the LHC

The dilaton, a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson appearing in spontaneous scale symmetry breaking at a TeV scale f, may be found in Higgs boson searches. The dilaton couples to standard model fermions and weak bosons with the same structure as the Higgs boson except for the overall strength. Additionally, the dilaton couples to a Higgs boson pair. The couplings of the dilaton to a gluon pair and a photon pair, appearing at loop level, are largely enhanced compared to the corresponding Higgs couplings. We present regions of the mass and VEV of the dilaton allowed by WW, ZZ, and gammagamma limits from the LHC at 7 TeV with 1.0-2.3 fb-1 integrated luminosity. A scale of f less than 1 TeV is nearly excluded. We discuss how the dilaton chi can be distinguished from the Higgs boson h by observation of the decays chi -> gammagamma and chi -> hh -> (WW)(WW).

Constraints on the interpretation of the superluminal motion of neutrinos at OPERA

Various approaches aim to describe the recent analysis by the OPERA experiment, which indicates that neutrinos travel faster than the speed of light. We demonstrate that any such theoretical or experimental explanation must not destroy the complicated (nonlinear) structure of the proton waveform recovered in the neutrino signal. As one example, consider that only a fraction of the neutrinos travel faster than the speed of light, such as sterile neutrinos. We fit the OPERA data including this fraction as a free variable, assuming that the OPERA result is correct. In our analysis, the best-fit values are 50% of the neutrinos being superluminal and (v-c)/c = 4.5 10^{-5}, where the neutrino velocity increases as the fraction of superluminal neutrinos decreases. The minimal fraction of superluminal neutrinos is found to be 17% (3 sigma), which is constrained by the non-linearity of the proton waveform. This minimal fraction challenges the hypothesis that only sterile neutrinos travel faster than the speed of light. In addition, we demonstrate that an experimental effect introducing a smearing between the proton waveform and neutrino signal, as expected for some systematical errors, is also limited by the shape of the waveform. Finally, we illustrate that even stronger constraints may be obtained from the recent analysis with a short-bunch beam, in spite of the low statistics.

Search for Lorentz invariance and CPT violation with muon antineutrinos in the MINOS Near Detector

We have searched for sidereal variations in the rate of antineutrino interactions in the MINOS Near Detector. Using antineutrinos produced by the NuMI beam, we find no statistically significant sidereal modulation in the rate. When this result is placed in the context of the Standard Model Extension theory we are able to place upper limits on the coefficients defining the theory. These limits are used in combination with the results from an earlier analysis of MINOS neutrino data to further constrain the coefficients.

Search for Higgs Bosons Produced in Association with b-Quarks

We present a search for neutral Higgs bosons decaying into b-bbar, produced in association with b quarks in p-pbar collisions. This process could be observable in supersymmetric models with high values of tan(beta). The event sample corresponds to 2.6/fb of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We search for an enhancement in the mass of the two lead jets in events with three jets identified as coming from b quarks using a displaced vertex algorithm. A data-driven procedure is used to estimate the dijet mass spectrum of the non-resonant multijet background. The contributions of backgrounds and possible signal are determined by a two-dimensional fit of the data, using the dijet mass together with an additional variable which is sensitive to the flavor composition of the three tagged jets. We set mass-dependent limits on sigma(p-pbar-->phi b) X BR(phi-->b-bbar) which are applicable for a narrow scalar particle phi produced in association with b quarks. We also interpret the results as limits on tan(beta) in supersymmetric Higgs models including the effects of the Higgs boson width.
