Cauchy problem for integrable discrete equations on quad-graphs

Initial value problems for the integrable discrete equations on quad-graphs are investigated. A geometric criterion of the well-posedness of such a problem is found. The effects of the interaction of the solutions with the localized defects in the regular square lattice are discussed for the discrete potential KdV and linear wave equations. The examples of kinks and solitons on various quad-graphs, including quasiperiodic tilings, are presented.

Symmetry classification of third-order nonlinear evolution equations. Part I: Semi-simple algebras

We give a complete point-symmetry classification of all third-order evolution equations of the form $u_t=F(t,x,u,u_x, u_{xx})u_{xxx}+G(t,x,u,u_x, u_{xx})$ which admit semi-simple symmetry algebras and extensions of these semi-simple Lie algebras by solvable Lie algebras. The methods we employ are extensions and refinements of previous techniques which have been used in such classifications.

Application of vertex algebras to the structure theory of certain representations over the Virasoro algebra

In this paper we discuss the structure of the tensor product V'_{α,β}\otimes L(c,h) of irreducible module from intermediate series and irreducible highest weight module over the Virasoro algebra. We generalize Zhang's irreducibility criterion, and show that irreducibility depends on the existence of integral roots of a certain polynomial, induced by a singular vector in the Verma module V(c,h). A new type of irreducible Vir-module with infinite-dimensional weight subspaces is found. We show how the existence of intertwining operator for modules over vertex operator algebra yields reducibility of V'_{α,β}\otimes L(c,h) which is a completely new point of view to this problem. As an example, the complete structure of the tensor product with minimal models c=-22/5 and c=1/2 is presented.

Generalization of Levi-Civita regularization in the restricted three-body problem

A family of polynomial coupled function of $n$ degree is proposed, in order to generalize the Levi-Civita regularization method, in the restricted three-body problem. Analytical relationship between polar radii in the physical plane and in the regularized plane are established; similar for polar angles. As a numerical application, trajectories of the test particle using polynomial functions of $2, 3,..., 8$ degree are obtained. For the polynomial of second degree, the Levi-Civita regularization method is found.

D'Alembert sums for vibrating bar with viscous ends

We describe a new method for finding analytic solutions to some initial-boundary problems for partial differential equations with constant coefficients. The method is based on expanding the denominator of the Laplace transformed Green's function of the problem into a convergent geometric series. If the denominator is a linear combination of exponents with real powers one obtains a closed form solution as a sum with finite but time dependent number of terms. We call it a d'Alembert sum. This representation is computationally most effective for small evolution times, but it remains valid even when the system of eigenmodes is incomplete and the eigenmode expansion is unavailable. Moreover, it simplifies in such cases. In vibratory problems d'Alembert sums represent superpositions of original and partially reflected traveling waves. They generalize the d'Alembert type formulas for the wave equation, and reduce to them when original waves can undergo only finitely many reflections in the entire course of evolution. The method is applied to vibrations of a bar with dampers at each end and at some internal point. The results are illustrated by computer simulations and comparisons to modal and FEM solutions.

On the total mass of closed universes

The total mass, the Witten type gauge conditions and the spectral properties of the Sen-Witten and the 3-surface twistor operators in closed universes are investigated. It has been proven that a recently suggested expression ${\tt M}$ for the total mass density of closed universes is vanishing if and only if the spacetime is flat with toroidal spatial topology; it coincides with the first eigenvalue of the Sen-Witten operator; and it is vanishing if and only if Witten's gauge condition admits a non-trivial solution. Here we generalize slightly the result above on the zero-mass configurations: ${\tt M}=0$ if and only if the spacetime is holonomically trivial with toroidal spatial topology. Also, we show that the multiplicity of the eigenvalues of the (square of the) Sen-Witten operator is at least two, and a potentially viable gauge condition is suggested. The monotonicity properties of ${\tt M}$ through the examples of closed Bianchi I and IX cosmological spacetimes are also discussed. A potential spectral characterization of these cosmological spacetimes, in terms of the spectrum of the Riemannian Dirac operator and the Sen-Witten and the 3-surface twistor operators, is also indicated.

Formal features of a General Theoretical Framework for Decoherence in open and closed systems

Two complementary decoherence formalisms, Environment Induced Decoherence (EID) for open systems and Self Induced Decoherence (SID) for close systems are compared under a common General Theoretical Formalism for Decoherence (GTFD). The differences and similarities of EID and SID are studied, e. g. that the main difference is that EID only considers the relevant information of the proper system S and neglects the rest, while SID considers all possible information available from a certain class of measurement instruments and neglects the non available information.

Dynamic Critical Behavior of the Chayes-Machta Algorithm for the Random-Cluster Model. I. Two Dimensions

We study, via Monte Carlo simulation, the dynamic critical behavior of the Chayes-Machta dynamics for the Fortuin-Kasteleyn random-cluster model, which generalizes the Swendsen-Wang dynamics for the q-state Potts ferromagnet to non-integer q \ge 1. We consider spatial dimension d=2 and 1.25 \le q \le 4 in steps of 0.25, on lattices up to 1024^2, and obtain estimates for the dynamic critical exponent z_{CM}. We present evidence that when 1 \le q \lesssim 1.95 the Ossola-Sokal conjecture z_{CM} \ge β/νis violated, though we also present plausible fits compatible with this conjecture. We show that the Li-Sokal bound z_{CM} \ge α/νis close to being sharp over the entire range 1 \le q \le 4, but is probably non-sharp by a power. As a byproduct of our work, we also obtain evidence concerning the corrections to scaling in static observables.

Asymptotics of the mean-field Heisenberg model

We consider the mean-field classical Heisenberg model and obtain detailed information about the total spin of the system by studying the model on a complete graph and sending the number of vertices to infinity. In particular, we obtain Cramer- and Sanov-type large deviations principles for the total spin and the empirical spin distribution and demonstrate a second-order phase transition in the Gibbs measures. We also study the asymptotics of the total spin throughout the phase transition using Stein's method, proving central limit theorems in the sub- and supercritical phases and a nonnormal limit theorem at the critical temperature.

The signed loop approach to the Ising model: foundations and critical point

The signed loop method is a beautiful way to rigorously study the two-dimensional Ising model with no external field. In this paper, we explore the foundations of the method, including details that have so far been neglected or overlooked in the literature. We demonstrate how the method can be applied to the Ising model on the square lattice to derive explicit formal expressions for the free energy density and two-point functions in terms of sums over loops, valid all the way up to the self-dual point. As a corollary, it follows that the self-dual point is critical both for the behaviour of the free energy density, and for the decay of the two-point functions.

The Availability of Logical Operation Induced by Dichotomous Noise for a Nonlinear Bistable System

Instead of a continuous system driven by Gaussian white noise, logical stochastic resonance will be investigated in a nonlinear bistable system with two thresholds driven by dichotomous noise, which shows a phenomenon different from Gaussian white noise. We can realize two parallel logical operations by simply adjusting the values of these two thresholds. Besides, to quantify the reliability of obtaining the correct logic output, we numerically calculate the success probability, and effects of dichotomous noise on the success probability are observed, these observations show that the reliability of realizing logical operation in the bistable system can be improved through optimizing parameters of dichotomous noise.

A nonlinear Landau-Zener formula

We consider a system of two coupled ordinary differential equations which appears as an envelope equation in Bose-Einstein Condensation. This system can be viewed as a nonlinear extension of the celebrated model introduced by Landau and Zener. We show how the nonlinear system may appear from different physical models. We focus our attention on the large time behavior of the solution. We show the existence of a nonlinear scattering operator, which is reminiscent of long range scattering for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, and which can be compared with its linear counterpart.

The inverse problem of pure point diffraction -- examples and open questions

This paper considers some open questions related to the inverse problem of pure point diffraction, in particular, what types of objects may diffract, and which of these may exhibit the same diffraction. Some diverse objects with the same simple lattice diffraction are constructed, including a tempered distribution that is not a measure, and it is shown that there are uncountably many such objects in the diffraction solution class of any pure point diffraction measure with an infinite supporting set.

Metric Properties of the Fuzzy Sphere

The fuzzy sphere, as a quantum metric space, carries a sequence of metrics which we describe in detail. We show that the Bloch coherent states, with these spectral distances, form a sequence of metric spaces that converge to the round sphere in the high-spin limit.

Asymptotic completeness for infraparticles in two-dimensional conformal field theory

We formulate a new concept of asymptotic completeness for two-dimensional massless quantum field theories in the spirit of the theory of particle weights. We show that this concept is more general than the standard particle interpretation based on Buchholz' scattering theory of waves. In particular, it holds in any chiral conformal field theory in an irreducible product representation and in any completely rational conformal field theory. This class contains theories of infraparticles to which the scattering theory of waves does not apply.

From Hurwitz numbers to Kontsevich-Witten tau-function: a connection by Virasoro operators

In this letter,we present our conjecture on the connection between the Kontsevich--Witten and the Hurwitz tau-functions. The conjectural formula connects these two tau-functions by means of the $GL(\infty)$ group element. An important feature of this group element is its simplicity: this is a group element of the Virasoro subalgebra of $gl(\infty)$. If proved, this conjecture would allow to derive the Virasoro constraints for the Hurwitz tau-function, which remain unknown in spite of existence of several matrix model representations, as well as to give an integrable operator description of the Kontsevich--Witten tau-function.

Scattering theory with finite-gap backgrounds: Transformation operators and characteristic properties of scattering data

We develop direct and inverse scattering theory for Jacobi operators (doubly infinite second order difference operators) with steplike coefficients which are asymptotically close to different finite-gap quasi-periodic coefficients on different sides. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the scattering data in the case of perturbations with finite second (or higher) moment.

Bounds of the Pinsker and Fannes Types on the Tsallis Relative Entropy

Pinsker's and Fannes' type bounds on the Tsallis relative entropy are derived. The monotonicity property of the quantum $f$-divergence is used for its estimating from below. For order $α\in(0,1)$, a family of lower bounds of Pinsker type is obtained. For $α>1$ and the commutative case, upper continuity bounds on the relative entropy in terms of the minimal probability in its second argument are derived. Both the lower and upper bounds presented are reformulated for the case of Rényi's entropies. The Fano inequality is extended to Tsallis' entropies for all $α>0$. The deduced bounds on the Tsallis conditional entropy are used for obtaining inequalities of Fannes' type.
