Distinguished three-qubit 'magicity' via automorphisms of the split Cayley hexagon

Disregarding the identity, the remaining 63 elements of the generalized three-qubit Pauli group are found to contain 12096 distinct copies of Mermin's magic pentagram. Remarkably, 12096 is also the number of automorphisms of the smallest split Cayley hexagon. We give a few solid arguments showing that this may not be a mere coincidence. These arguments are mainly tied to the structure of certain types of geometric hyperplanes of the hexagon. It is further demonstrated that also an (18_{2}, 12_{3})-type of magic configurations, recently proposed by Waegell and Aravind (J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 45 (2012) 405301), seems to be intricately linked with automorphisms of the hexagon. Finally, the entanglement properties exhibited by edges of both pentagrams and these particular Waegell-Aravind configurations are addressed.

Sturm-Liouville operators with measure-valued coefficients

We give a comprehensive treatment of Sturm-Liouville operators with measure-valued coefficients including, a full discussion of self-adjoint extensions and boundary conditions, resolvents, and Weyl-Titchmarsh theory. We avoid previous technical restrictions and, at the same time, extend all results to a larger class of operators. Our operators include classical Sturm-Liouville operators, Lax operators arising in the treatment of the Camassa-Holm equation, Jacobi operators, and Sturm-Liouville operators on time scales as special cases.

Zeroes of Gaussian Analytic Functions with Translation-Invariant Distribution

We study zeroes of Gaussian analytic functions in a strip in the complex plane, with translation-invariant distribution. We prove that the a limiting horizontal mean counting-measure of the zeroes exists almost surely, and that it is non-random if and only if the spectral measure is continuous (or degenerate). In this case, the mean zero-counting measure is computed in terms of the spectral measure. We compare the behavior with Gaussian analytic function with symmetry around the real axis. These results extend a work by Norbert Wiener.

Comment on "Geometrothermodynamics of a Charged Black Hole of String Theory"

We comment on the conclusions found by Larrañaga and Mojica regarding the consistency of the Geoemtrothermodynamics programme to describe the critical behaviour of a Gibbons-Maeda-Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger charged black hole. We argue that making the appropriate choice of metric for the thermodynamic phase space and, most importantly, considering the homogeneity of the thermodynamic potential we obtain consistent results for such a black hole.

Analytic Continuation of the Doubly-periodic Barnes Zeta Function

The aim of this work is to study the analytic continuation of the doubly-periodic Barnes zeta function. By using a suitable complex integral representation as a starting point we find the meromorphic extension of the doubly periodic Barnes zeta function to the entire complex plane in terms of a real integral containing the Hurwitz zeta function and the first Jacobi theta function. These allow us to explicitly give expressions for the derivative at all non-positive integer points.

Transition from resonances to surface waves in pi^+-p elastic scattering

In this article we study resonances and surface waves in $π^+$--p scattering. We focus on the sequence whose spin-parity values are given by $J^p = {3/2}^+,{7/2}^+, {11/2}^+, {15/2}^+,{19/2}^+$. A widely-held belief takes for granted that this sequence can be connected by a moving pole in the complex angular momentum (CAM) plane, which gives rise to a linear trajectory of the form $J = α_0+α' m^2$, $α'\sim 1/(\mathrm{GeV})^2$, which is the standard expression of the Regge pole trajectory. But the phenomenology shows that only the first few resonances lie on a trajectory of this type. For higher $J^p$ this rule is violated and is substituted by the relation $J\sim kR$, where $k$ is the pion--nucleon c.m.s.-momentum, and $R\sim 1$ fm. In this article we prove: (a) Starting from a non-relativistic model of the proton, regarded as composed by three quarks confined by harmonic potentials, we prove that the first three members of this $π^+$-p resonance sequence can be associated with a vibrational spectrum of the proton generated by an algebra $Sp(3,R)$. Accordingly, these first three members of the sequence can be described by Regge poles and lie on a standard linear trajectory. (b) At higher energies the amplitudes are dominated by diffractive scattering, and the creeping waves play a dominant role. They can be described by a second class of poles, which can be called Sommerfeld's poles, and lie on a line nearly parallel to the imaginary axis of the CAM-plane. (c) The Sommerfeld pole which is closest to the real axis of the CAM-plane is dominant at large angles, and describes in a proper way the backward diffractive peak in both the following cases: at fixed $k$, as a function of the scattering angle, and at fixed scattering angle $θ=π$, as a function of $k$. (d) The evolution of this pole, as a function of $k$, is given in first approximation by $J\simeq kR$.

Discrete Accidental Symmetry for a Particle in a Constant Magnetic Field on a Torus

A classical particle in a constant magnetic field undergoes cyclotron motion on a circular orbit. At the quantum level, the fact that all classical orbits are closed gives rise to degeneracies in the spectrum. It is well-known that the spectrum of a charged particle in a constant magnetic field consists of infinitely degenerate Landau levels. Just as for the $1/r$ and $r^2$ potentials, one thus expects some hidden accidental symmetry, in this case with infinite-dimensional representations. Indeed, the position of the center of the cyclotron circle plays the role of a Runge-Lenz vector. After identifying the corresponding accidental symmetry algebra, we re-analyze the system in a finite periodic volume. Interestingly, similar to the quantum mechanical breaking of CP invariance due to the $θ$-vacuum angle in non-Abelian gauge theories, quantum effects due to two self-adjoint extension parameters $θ_x$ and $θ_y$ explicitly break the continuous translation invariance of the classical theory. This reduces the symmetry to a discrete magnetic translation group and leads to finite degeneracy. Similar to a particle moving on a cone, a particle in a constant magnetic field shows a very peculiar realization of accidental symmetry in quantum mechanics.

On a family of (1+1)-dimensional scalar field theory models: kinks, stability, one-loop mass shifts

In this paper we construct a one-parametric family of (1+1)-dimensional one-component scalar field theory models supporting kinks. Inspired by the sine-Gordon and $ϕ^4$ models, we look at all possible extensions such that the kink second-order fluctuation operators are Schrödinger differential operators with Pöschl-Teller potential wells. In this situation, the associated spectral problem is solvable and therefore we shall succeed in analyzing the kink stability completely and in computing the one-loop quantum correction to the kink mass exactly. When the parameter is a natural number, the family becomes the hierarchy for which the potential wells are reflectionless, the two first levels of the hierarchy being the sine-Gordon and $ϕ^4$ models.

Information storage capacity of discrete spin systems

Understanding the limits imposed on information storage capacity of physical systems is a problem of fundamental and practical importance which bridges physics and information science. There is a well-known upper bound on the amount of information that can be stored reliably in a given volume of discrete spin systems which are supported by gapped local Hamiltonians. However, all the previously known systems were far below this theoretical bound, and it remained open whether there exists a gapped spin system that saturates this bound. Here, we present a construction of spin systems which saturate this theoretical limit asymptotically by borrowing an idea from fractal properties arising in the Sierpinski triangle. Our construction provides not only the best classical error-correcting code which is physically realizable as the energy ground space of gapped frustration-free Hamiltonians, but also a new research avenue for correlated spin phases with fractal spin configurations.

Non-intrusive Low-Rank Separated Approximation of High-Dimensional Stochastic Models

This work proposes a sampling-based (non-intrusive) approach within the context of low-rank separated representations to tackle the issue of curse-of-dimensionality associated with the solution of models, e.g., PDEs/ODEs, with high-dimensional random inputs. Under some conditions discussed in details, the number of random realizations of the solution, required for a successful approximation, grows linearly with respect to the number of random inputs. The construction of the separated representation is achieved via a regularized alternating least-squares regression, together with an error indicator to estimate model parameters. The computational complexity of such a construction is quadratic in the number of random inputs. The performance of the method is investigated through its application to three numerical examples including two ODE problems with high-dimensional random inputs.

Non-Newtonian characteristics of peristaltic flow of blood in micro-vessels

Of concern in the paper is a generalized theoretical study of the non-Newtonian characteristics of peristaltic flow of blood through micro-vessels, e.g. arterioles. The vessel is considered to be of variable cross-section and blood to be a Herschel-Bulkley type of fluid. The progressive wave front of the peristaltic flow is supposed sinusoidal/straight section dominated (SSD) (expansion/contraction type); Reynolds number is considered to be small with reference to blood flow in the micro-circulatory system. The equations that govern the non-Newtonian peristaltic flow of blood are considered to be non-linear. The objective of the study has been to examine the effect of amplitude ratio, mean pressure gradient, yield stress and the power law index on the velocity distribution, wall shear stress, streamline pattern and trapping. It is observed that the numerical estimates for the aforesaid quantities in the case of peristaltic transport of the blood in a channel are much different from those for flow in an axisymmetric vessel of circular cross-section. The study further shows that peristaltic pumping, flow velocity and wall shear stress are significantly altered due to the non-uniformity of the cross-sectional radius of blood vessels of the micro-circulatory system. Moreover, the magnitude of the amplitude ratio and the value of the fluid index are important parameters that affect the flow behaviour. Novel features of SSD wave propagation that affect the flow behaviour of blood have also been discussed.

On the linearization of isochronous centre of a modified Emden equation with linear external forcing

In this work, we carry out a detailed study on the linearization of isochronous centre of a modified Emden equation with linear external forcing. We construct inverse integrating factor and time independent first integral for this system through Darboux method. To linearize the isochronous centre we explore a transverse commuting dynamical system and its first integral. With the help of first integrals of the original dynamical system and its transverse commuting system we derive the linearizing transformation and reduce the nonlinear system into linear isochronous one. We also point out certain mathematical structures associated with this dynamical system.

Velocity Polytopes of Periodic Graphs and a No-Go Theorem for Digital Physics

A periodic graph in dimension $d$ is a directed graph with a free action of $\Z^d$ with only finitely many orbits. It can conveniently be represented in terms of an associated finite graph with weights in $\Z^d$, corresponding to a $\Z^d$-bundle with connection. Here we use the weight sums along cycles in this associated graph to construct a certain polytope in $\R^d$, which we regard as a geometrical invariant associated to the periodic graph. It is the unit ball of a norm on $\R^d$ describing the large-scale geometry of the graph. It has a physical interpretation as the set of attainable velocities of a particle on the graph which can hop along one edge per timestep. Since a polytope necessarily has distinguished directions, there is no periodic graph for which this velocity set is isotropic. In the context of classical physics, this can be viewed as a no-go theorem for the emergence of an isotropic space from a discrete structure.

Cardy-Frobenius extension of algebra of cut-and-join operators

Motivated by the algebraic open-closed string models, we introduce and discuss an infinite-dimensional counterpart of the open-closed Hurwitz theory describing branching coverings generated both by the compact oriented surfaces and by the foam surfaces. We manifestly construct the corresponding infinite-dimensional equipped Cardy-Frobenius algebra, with the closed and open sectors are represented by conjugation classes of permutations and the pairs of permutations, i.e. by the algebra of Young diagrams and bipartite graphes respectively.

Monad constructions of omalous bundles

We consider a particular class of holomorphic vector bundles relevant for supersymmetric string theory, called \emph{omalous}, over nonsingular projective varieties. We use monads to construct examples of such bundles over 3-fold hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^{4}$, complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds in $\mathbb{P}^{k}$, blow-ups of $\mathbb{P}^{2}$ at $n$ distinct points, and products $\mathbb{P}^{m}\times\mathbb{P}^{n}$.

Discrete harmonic analysis on a Weyl alcove

We introduce a representation of the double affine Hecke algebra at the critical level q=1 in terms of difference-reflection operators and use it to construct an explicit integrable discrete Laplacian on the Weyl alcove corresponding to an element in the center. The Laplacian in question is to be viewed as an integrable discretization of the conventional Laplace operator on Euclidian space perturbed by a delta-potential supported on the reflection hyperplanes of the affine Weyl group. The Bethe Ansatz method is employed to show that our discrete Laplacian and its commuting integrals are diagonalized by a finite-dimensional basis of periodic Macdonald spherical functions.

An example of unitary equivalence between self-adjoint extensions and their parameters

The spectral problem for self-adjoint extensions is studied using the machinery of boundary triplets. For a class of symmetric operators having Weyl functions of a special type we calculate explicitly the spectral projections in the form of operator-valued integrals. This allows one to give a constructive proof of the fact that, in certain intervals, the resulting self-adjoint extensions are unitarily equivalent to a certain parameterizing operator acting in a smaller space, and one is able to provide an explicit form the associated unitary transform. Applications to differential operators on metric graphs and to direct sums are discussed.

A physical approach to the classification of indecomposable Virasoro representations from the blob algebra

In the context of Conformal Field Theory (CFT), many results can be obtained from the representation theory of the Virasoro algebra. While the interest in Logarithmic CFTs has been growing recently, the Virasoro representations corresponding to these quantum field theories remain dauntingly complicated, thus hindering our understanding of various critical phenomena. We extend in this paper the construction of Read and Saleur (2007), and uncover a deep relationship between the Virasoro algebra and a finite-dimensional algebra characterizing the properties of two-dimensional statistical models, the so-called blob algebra (a proper extension of the Temperley--Lieb algebra). This allows us to explore vast classes of Virasoro representations (projective, tilting, generalized staggered modules, etc.), and to conjecture a classification of all possible indecomposable Virasoro modules (with, in particular, L_0 Jordan cells of arbitrary rank) that may appear in a consistent physical Logarithmic CFT where Virasoro is the maximal local chiral algebra. As by-products, we solve and analyze algebraically quantum-group symmetric XXZ spin chains and sl(2|1) supersymmetric spin chains with extra spins at the boundary, together with the "mirror" spin chain introduced by Martin and Woodcock (2004).
