Orbital stability and the quantum atomic spectrum from Stochastic Electrodynamics

High order terms in the electromagnetic multipole development expose a stabilizing mechanism for the atomic orbitals in the presence of the ZPF-background. Boyer and Puthoff set forward the idea that for the Bohr orbits in the hydrogen atom, radiation losses could be compensated by absorption from a background of zero point vacuum fluctuations. This balance is, on average over the orbit, a necessary condition for stationarity of the movement, and imposes a relation on the pair $R_{0}$ (orbital radius), $ω_{0}$ (orbital angular velocity). That relation is simply what we have for long known as angular momentum quantization. Taking into account the stochastic nature of the ZPF, we have to realize that nothing, however, has been said yet on how could this balance be attained on a quasi instantaneous basis, in other words, how could the orbit accommodate the instantaneous excess or defect of energy so as to keep constant the (at least average) values of its parameters ($R_{0}$, $ω_{0}$). Using classical electromagnetism, we explore some high order interactions between realistic particles, exposing a mechanism (a feedback loop between variables) that makes that stability possible. Puthoff's work led necessarily to the quantization of angular momentum: "if stable orbits exist... then their angular momentum must be quantized"; now, too, we are able to do a much stronger statement: "the equations of the system, in the presence of ZPF background, lead necessarily to a discrete set of stable orbits".

A classification scheme of Amino Acids in the Genetic Code by Group Theory

We derive the amino acid assignment to one codon representation (typical 64-dimensional irreducible representation) of the basic classical Lie superalgebra osp(5|2) from biochemical arguments. We motivate the approach of mathematical symmetries to the classification of the building constituents of the biosphere by analogy of its success in particle physics and chemistry. The model enables to calculate polarity and molecular volume of amino acids to a good approximation.

Extended Lorentz code of a superluminal particle

While the OPERA experimental scrutiny is ongoing in the community, in the present article we construct a toy model of {\it extended Lorentz code} (ELC) of the uniform motion, which will be a well established consistent and unique theoretical framework to explain the apparent violations of the standard Lorentz code (SLC), the possible manifestations of which arise in a similar way in all particle sectors. We argue that in the ELC-framework the propagation of the superluminal particle, which implies the modified dispersion relation, could be consistent with causality. Furthermore, in this framework, we give a justification of forbiddance of Vavilov-Cherenkov (VC)-radiation/or analog processes in vacuum. To be consistent with the SN1987A and OPERA data, we identify the neutrinos from SN1987A and the light as so-called {\it 1-th type} particles carrying the {\it individual Lorentz motion code} with the velocity of light $c_{1}\equiv c$ in vacuum as maximum attainable velocity for all the 1-th type particles. Thereby, we treat superluminal muon neutrinos as so-called {\it 2-nd type} particles carrying the individual Lorentz motion code with the velocity $c_{2}$ as maximum attainable velocity for all the 2-nd type particles. For the muon neutrinos mean energy $E_{ν2}=17.5$ GeV, claimed velocity $(v_{ν2}-c)/c= 2.48\times 10^{-5}$, and expected finite rest mass $m_{0}\approx 1eV/c^{2}$, we obtain then $ c_{2}/c\approx 17.5\times 10^{9}$.

Environment-Dependent Fundamental Physical Constants in the Theory of General Inconstancy

A theory of special inconstancy, in which some fundamental physical constants such as the fine-structure and gravitational constants may vary, is proposed in pregeometry. In the special theory of inconstancy, the α-G relation of α=3π/[16ln(4π/5GM_W^2)] between the varying fine-structure and gravitaional constants (where M_W is the charged weak boson mass) is derived from the hypothesis that both of these constants are related to the same fundamental length scale in nature. Furthermore, it leads to the prediction of dot{α}/α=(-0.8\pm2.5)\times10^{-14}yr^{-1} from the most precise limit of dot{G}/G=(-0.6\pm2.0)\times10^{-12}yr^{-1} by Thorsett, which is not only consistent with the recent observation of dot{α}/α=(0.5\pm0.5)\times10^{-14}yr^{-1} by Webb et al. but also feasible for future experimental tests. Also a theory of general inconstancy, in which any fundamental physical constants may vary, is proposed in "more general relativity", by assuming that the space-time is "environment-dependent". In the general theory of inconstancy, the G-Λ relation between the varying gravitational and cosmological constants is derived from the hypothesis that the space-time metric is a function of τ, the "environment-coodinate", in addition to x^μ, the ordinary space-time coodinates. Furthermore, it leads to the prediction of the varying cosmological constant, which is consistent with the present observations. In addition, the latest observation of spatial variation in the fine-structure constant from VLT/UVES of (1.1\pm 0.2)\times 10^{-6}GLyr^{-1} by King et al. is suggested to be taken as a clear evidence for environment-dependent fundamental physical constants

Comment on "Resolution of the Abraham-Minkowski Dilemma"

In a recent Letter by Barnett [S. M. Barnett, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 070401 (2010)], a total-momentum model is proposed for resolution of the Abraham-Minkowski dilemma. In this model, Abraham's and Minkowski's momentums are, respectively, a component of the same total momentum, with the former being the kinetic momentum and the latter the canonical momentum. In this Comment, I would like to indicate that this physical model is not consistent with global momentum-energy conservation law in the principle-of-relativity frame.

Evolution of the CPT Invariance into a Basic Postulate in Physics

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen's paper in 1935 is discussed in parallel with an EPR experiment on $K^0\bar{K}^0$ system in 1998, yielding a strong hint of distinction in both wave-function and operators between particle and antiparticle at the level of quantum mechanics (QM). Then it is proposed that the CPT invariance in particle physics leads naturally to a basic postulate that the (newly defined) space-time inversion (${\bf x}\to -{\bf x},t\to -t$) is equivalent to the transformation between particle and its antiparticle. The evolution of this postulate from nonrelativistic QM via relativistic QM till the quantum field theory is discussed in some detail. The Klein paradox for both Klein-Gordon equation and Dirac equation is also discussed. Keywords: CPT invariance, Antiparticle, Quantum mechanics, Quantum field theory

Special relativity with an arbitrary invariant limiting velocity of a particle

It is shown that a generalized special theory of relativity (GSTR) with an arbitrary limiting velocity of a particle different or equal to the speed of light in vacuum can be constructed from the canonical equation of the 4-dimensional hyperboloid of revolution. In particular, when the limiting velocity equals the speed of light, the special theory of relativity (STR), which corresponds to the equation of the equilateral hyperboloid of revolution, is recovered. The generalized Lorentz transformations for any values of the speed limit for both the time-like and the spice-like regions in the coordinate and momentum spaces and in the general parametric form were obtained. It was established that the inversion of time (energy) axis under the (generalized) Lorentz transformations is forbidden. In the GSTR, the rest mass of a space-like particle is real. Our results strongly suggest that the muon neutrino in the OPERA experiment might most likely be a time-like or a light-like superluminal particle, whose limiting velocity may exceed the speed of light in vacuum, rather than a superluminal space-like particle (tachyon) with a speed limit equal to speed of light for which the rest mass $m=117.1^{+11.0}_{-10.5}$ MeV$/c^{2}$.

Oscillatory Universe, dark energy and general relativity

The concept of oscillatory Universe appears to be realistic and buried in the dynamic dark energy equation of state. We explore its evolutionary history under the frame work of general relativity. We observe that oscillations do not go unnoticed with such an equation of state and that their effects persist later on in cosmic evolution. The `classical' general relativity seems to retain the past history of oscillatory Universe in the form of increasing scale factor as the classical thermodynamics retains this history in the form of increasing cosmological entropy.

de Broglie Wavelength and Frequency of the Scattered Electrons in Compton Effect

The undergraduate courses on modern physics generally consider the particle interpretation of Compton effect. Motivated by a student's solution in an undergraduate examination on modern physics here we consider the wave characteristics of recoiled electrons in the Compton effect. The de Broglie wavelength, wave and clock frequency of the scattered electrons are expressed in terms of the wavelength and the frequency of the incident and the scattered photons respectively using the familiar particle interpretation of the Compton effect, where initially the electron is at rest and its spin is ignored. Both non-relativistic and relativistic cases are considered. Numerical values of de Broglie wavelength, wave and clock frequency of the scattered electron are calculated for an incident photon energy that was used in the original experiment of Compton as a function of the scattering angle of the recoiled electron. Considering the relativistic effects which are however insignificant for the de Broglie wavelength of the recoiled electron under these conditions, the minimum value obtained is in the range of X-rays. The non-relativistic de Broglie wave frequency obtained by neglecting the rest mass of the electron leads to an underestimation of its value. The implications of de Broglie wavelength and clock frequency for Compton scattering experiments are briefly discussed and possible extensions of the obtained mathematical formulations are indicated. The results are useful for understanding the wave-particle duality of the recoiled electron in the context of the Compton effect.

Semi-Empirical Neutrino and Quark Mixing Angle Broken 4-Color Geometric Symmetry

Two semi-empirical ideas are guiding the present research: 1) one neutrino and N color quark triple mixing angles have second physical meaning of vector direction angles in euclidean 3-space, and 2) the difference between neutrino and quark mixing in the SM weak interactions is mostly conditioned by known fundamental difference of these particles by numbers of color degree of freedom. As main physical inference, the elementary particle mixing angles obey a novel phenomenological quark-neutrino (N+1)-color and 3 mixing angle symmetric positive definite quadratic Pythagorean equation in terms of double mixing angles. This equation predicts immediately that two large solar and atmospheric angles must be accompanied by one small not zero theta-13 neutrino angle in convincing agreement with recent new theta-13 experimental data. Benchmark flavor mixing pattern - united bimaximal neutrino and zero quark ones - follows from solutions of the primary equation without free parameters. Agreement with known experimental data follows only when the number of quark colors is equal to the number of particle flavors, N = 3. Together with closely related to the fine structure constant one empirical small parameter, that benchmark pattern determines realistic quark and neutrino mixing angles in good agreement with data and especially accurate for quark Cabibbo and neutrino solar angles. Coming accurate neutrino mixing angle data are important for testing the Pythagorean equation.

Results of Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiments Based on the Consideration of Frameworks

In this paper, we present an analysis of the outcomes of long-baseline neutrino experiments based on the consideration of frameworks. Our analysis suggests that the time difference between the time-of-flights corresponding to the speed of light (in vacuum) and that of the neutrino from a source to a detector is within the range of our predicted time difference assuming that the speed of neutrino follows a Galilean transformation. As the ghostly particles called neutrinos have peculiar properties which are still unresolved, so we propose measurements need to be performed at different times of the day to test any diurnal variations (if possible then any annual variations) due to the movement of the Earth.

A Conceptual Framework for Understanding Faster-Than-Light Neutrinos

Recent experiments have led to the production of neutrinos with transit times indicating the appearance of traveling faster than the speed of light. In this paper, we present a conceptual framework to understand how faster-than-light events involving neutrinos (as indicated by time-of-flight) might occur. We propose that observations of this kind do not violate the special theory of relativity; instead, they only help to provide evidence in support of the general theory of relativity at quantum scales. Given the relativistic effects of the neutrino on its local spacetime environment, the measured time-of-flight at the macroscopic level is attributable to a decrease in the effective path length traversed by the neutrino. Specifically, along preferred directions, we show that the Kerr metric allows for the compression of spacetime; hence, the decreased path length hypothesis is plausible. Furthermore, when the motion of the neutrino is along the preferred direction for spacetime compression, the Kerr metric also predicts strong frame dragging effects near the Planck length. In the region where strong frame dragging occurs, we propose that the microscopic explanation for the path length compression is due to the formation of 'micro-wormholes' near the Planck length.

Quantization makes Relativity Compatible with Superluminal Phenomena

By relativity we show that, although the superluminal motion of classical particles is forbidden, the superluminal transportation of quanta of any massive matter field is possible. Exact theoretical derivation and precise numerical computation are presented. To search the superluminal phenomena is therefore still meaningful.

Relativistic quantum mechanics and relativistic quantum statistics based upon a novel perspective on relativistic transformation

A novel perspective on relativistic transformation recently-proposed provides an insight into the very meaning of the principle of relativity. With this novel perspective and Bell's theorem, we argue that special relativity, instead of quantum theory, should be radically reformulated to resolve inconsistencies between the two theories. A new theory of relativistic quantum mechanics is formulated upon this novel perspective. This new relativistic quantum mechanics is free from such anomalies as the negative probability density, the negative-energy states, Zitterbewegung, and the Klein paradox deep-rooted in the current relativistic quantum mechanics. Moreover, a remarkable result is found that a particle can not be confined within an infinite square well of width less than half of the Compton wavelength. As implications in nuclear physics, there is a lower bound on the size of atomic nucleus. Neither an electron, nor a positron, can be confined inside the nucleus by whatever interaction. Furthermore, we argue that the postulates of non-relativistic quantum statistics fulfill the principle of relativity, as extended to the relativistic realm. A new theory of relativistic quantum statistics is formulated such that the probability distribution functions are the same as the three well-known probability distribution functions in non-relativistic quantum statistics. A relativistic speed distribution of a dilute gas is then derived by the new relativistic quantum statistics and the new relativistic quantum mechanics. This relativistic speed distribution reduces to Maxwell speed distribution in the low temperature region. Yet, this relativistic speed distribution differs remarkably from Jüttner speed distribution in the high temperature region. Also, thermal properties of a dilute gas are studied by the new relativistic quantum statistics.

Neutrinos and $v<c$

The Stueckelberg formulation of a manifestly covariant relativistic classical and quantum mechanics is briefly reviewed and it is shown that in this framework a simple (semiclassical) model exists for the description of neutrino oscillations. The model is shown to be consistent with the field equations and the Lorentz force (developed here without and with spin by canonical methods) for Glashow-Salam-Weinberg type non-Abelian fields interacting with the leptons. We discuss a possible fundamental mechanism, in the context of a relativistic theory of spin for (first quantized) quantum mechanical systems, for CP violation. The model also predicts a possibly small "pull back", i.e., early arrival of a neutrino beam, for which the neutrino motion is almost everywhere within the light cone, a result which may emerge from future long baseline experiments designed to investigate neutrino transit times with significantly higher accuracy than presently available.

Singular states of relativistic fermions in the field of a circularly polarized electromagnetic wave and constant magnetic field

Dirac's equation in the field of a circularly polarized electromagnetic wave and constant magnetic field has exact localized non-stationary solutions. The solutions corresponds relativistic fermions only. Among them singular solutions with energy eigenvalues close to each other are found. The solutions are most practicable and can be separated by means of the phase matching between the momentum of the electromagnetic wave and spinor. Characteristic parameters of the singular states are defined.

Improvement of a provisional solution of the quantum-corrected field equations of d = 11 supergravity on flat R^4 times a compact hyperbolic 7-manifold, and modes that decay along the beam line outside the interaction region at the LHC

A recent provisional solution of the quantum-corrected field equations of d = 11 supergravity on flat R^4 times a compact hyperbolic 7-manifold \bar{H}^7, in the presence of magnetic 4-form fluxes wrapping 4-cycles of \bar{H}^7, is improved by showing that the curvature radius B of \bar{H}^7 and the r.m.s. 4-form flux strength h each have a single stationary point as the field redefinition parameter c is varied. Application of the principle of minimal sensitivity then fixes c in a moderate range such that B and h^{1/3} vary by only 4% and 5% respectively over this range. The new best value of B is 0.28 κ_{11}^{2/9} = 1.2 M_{11}^{-1}. The low-lying bosonic Kaluza-Klein modes of the bulk are studied. The classically massless harmonic 3-form modes of the 3-form gauge field, whose number is estimated as roughly 10^{32} if the intrinsic volume of \bar{H}^7 is ~ 10^{35}, acquire a mass 0.2 A/B from quantum corrections, where the warp factor A is fixed by the boundary conditions at the Horava-Witten (HW) boundary to lie between about 0.7 and 0.9. They have axion-like couplings to the SM gauge bosons. Their lifetimes range from about 10^{-27} seconds to several hours depending on the distance of their centre from the HW boundary, and they can decay along the beam line outside the interaction region at the LHC, with a distribution that shows a power law rather than exponential decrease with distance from the IP. Approximate exclusion limits are obtained from recent LHC data, and discovery prospects at ATLAS and CMS are studied.
