Descent for Shimura Varieties

We verify that the descent maps provided by Langlands's Conjugacy Conjecture do satisfy the continuity condition necessary for them to be effective. Thus Langlands's conjecture does imply the existence of canonical models. This replaces an earlier version of the paper --- the proof in this version is simpler, and the exposition more detailed.

A morphism of intersection homology induced by an algebraic map

Let $f:X-->Y$ be a map of algebraic varieties. Barthel, Brasselet, Fieseler, Gabber and Kaup have shown that there exists a homomorphism of intersection homology groups $f^*:IH^*(Y)-->IH^*(X)$ compatible with the induced homomorphism on cohomology. The crucial point in the argument is reduction to the finite characteristic. We give an alternative and short proof of the existence of a homomorphism $f^*$. Our construction is an easy application of the Decomposition Theorem.

Toric Degenerations of Fano Varieties and Constructing Mirror Manifolds

For an arbitrary smooth n-dimensional Fano variety $X$ we introduce the notion of a small toric degeneration. Using small toric degenerations of Fano n-folds $X$, we propose a general method for constructing mirrors of Calabi-Yau complete intersections in $X$. Our mirror construction is based on a generalized monomial-divisor mirror correspondence which can be used for computing Gromov-Witten invariants of rational curves via specializations of GKZ-hypergeometric series.

Convexity Properties of the Moment Mapping Re-examined

Consider a Hamiltonian action of a compact Lie group on a compact symplectic manifold. A theorem of Kirwan's says that the image of the momentum mapping intersects the positive Weyl chamber in a convex polytope. I present a new proof of Kirwan's theorem, which gives explicit information on how the vertices of the polytope come about and on how the shape of the polytope near any point can be read off from infinitesimal data on the manifold. It also applies to some interesting classes of noncompact or singular Hamiltonian spaces, such as cotangent bundles and complex affine varieties.

Modular operads

Modular operads are a special type of operad: in fact, they bear the same relationship to operads that graphs do to trees (i.e. simply connected graphs). One of the basic examples of a modular operad is the collection of Deligne-Mumford-Knudsen moduli spaces $\bar{M}_{g,n}$ of stable pointed algebraic curves; hence the word ``modular.'' In this paper, we introduce various constructions on differential graded modular operads, notably a duality which we call the Feynman transform, which extends Kontsevich's graph complexes. Our main result is the calculation of the Euler characteristic of the Feynman transform of a modular operad, using the theory of symmetric functions: the result is a generalization of Wick's theorem for Gaussian integrals.

Rokhlin Conjecture and Topology of Quotients of Complex Surfaces by Complex Conjugation

Quotients $Y=X/conj$ of complex surfaces by anti-holomorphic involutions $conj\: X\to X$ tend to be completely decomposable when they are simply connected, i.e., split into connected sums, $n CP^2\#m\barCP2$, if $w_2(Y)\ne0$, or into $n(S^2\times S^2)$ if $w_2(Y)=0$. If $X$ is a double branched covering over $CP^2$, this phenomenon is related to unknottedness of Arnold surfaces in $S^4=CP^2/conj$, which was conjectured by V.Rokhlin. The paper contains proof of Rokhlin Conjecture and of decomposability of quotients for plenty of double planes and in certain other cases. This results give, in particular, an elementary proof of Donaldson's result on decomposability of $Y$ for K3 surfaces.

Introduction to Seiberg-Witten's Invariants, Part I: Theory of Spinors

In 1994, Witten has defined a monopole invariant and he has shown the equivalence of this invariant with Donaldson's polynomial using his result in \( \SS \)-duality. This new invariant is very powerful because the gauge group is abelian. By using such an invariant, many new results are found in the smooth, Kähler and even the symplectic categories. However, almost every paper in this topic write the monopole equations in a different way. Therefore is it necessary to clarify the basic idea behind the definition of such an invariant. In this paper we investigate the algebraic structure (Clifford algebra and \(\spinc\) representation ) underlying this invariant and explain the equations explicitly, especially the Kählerian case. Details of the computations are shown explicitly, and some minute mistakes in the existing papers are corrected.

4-Manifolds without Einstein Metrics

It is shown that there are infinitely many compact orientable smooth 4-manifolds which do not admit Einstein metrics, but nevertheless satisfy the strict Hitchin-Thorpe inequality 2 chi > 3 |tau|. The examples in question arise as non-minimal complex algebraic surfaces of general type, and the method of proof stems from Seiberg-Witten theory.

Equivariant Holomorphic Morse Inequalities I: A Heat Kernel Proof

Assume that the circle group acts holomorphically on a compact Kähler manifold with isolated fixed points and that the action can be lifted holomorphically to a holomorphic Hermitian vector bundle. We give a heat kernel proof of the equivariant holomorphic Morse inequalities. We use some techniques developed by Bismut and Lebeau. These inequalities, first obtained by Witten using a different argument, produce bounds on the multiplicities of weights occurring in the twisted Dolbeault cohomologies in terms of the data of the fixed points.

Equivariant Holomorphic Morse Inequalities II: Torus and Non-Abelian Group Actions

We extend the equivariant holomorphic Morse inequalities of circle actions to cases with torus and non-Abelian group actions on holomorphic vector bundles over Kahler manifolds and show the necessity of the Kahler condition. For torus actions, there is a set of inequalities for each choice of action chambers specifying directions in the Lie algebra of the torus. We apply the results to invariant line bundles over toric manifolds. If the group is non-Abelian, there is in addition an action of the Weyl group on the fixed-point set of its maximal torus. The sum over the fixed points can be rearranged into sums over the Weyl group (having incorporated the character of the isotropy representation on the fiber) and over its orbits.

Connectedness of spaces of symplectic embeddings

We prove that the space of symplectic packings of ${\Bbb C}P^2$ by $k$ equal balls is connected for $3\leq k\leq 6$. The proof is based on Gromov-Witten invariants and on the inflation technique due to Lalonde and McDuff.

Gromov-Witten invariants of general symplectic manifolds

We present an approach to Gromov-Witten invariants that works on arbitrary (closed) symplectic manifolds. We avoid genericity arguments and take into account singular curves in the very formulation. The method is by first endowing mapping spaces from (prestable) algebraic curves into the symplectic manifold with the structure of a Banach orbifold and then exhibiting the space of stable $J$-curves (``stable maps'') as zero set of a Fredholm section of a Banach orbibundle over this space. The invariants are constructed by pairing with a homology class on the locally compact topological space of stable $J$-curves that is generated as localized Euler class of the section.

Canonical coordinates and Bergman metrics

In this paper we will discuss local coordinates canonically corresponding to a Kahler metric. We will also discuss and prove the $C^\infty$ convergence of Bergman metrics following Tian's result on $C^2$ convergence of Bergman metrics. At the end, we present an interesting characterization of ample line bundle that could be useful in arithmetic geometry.

Heat kernel and moduli spaces II

In this paper we continue our study on the moduli spaces of flat G-bundles, for any semi-simple Lie group G, over a Riemann surface by using heat kernel and Reidemeister torsion. Formulas for intersection numbers on the moduli spaces over a Riemann surface with several boundary components, over non-orientable Riemann surfaces are obtained. Some general vanishing theorems about characteristic numbers of the moduli spaces are proved. We also extend our method to study Higgs moduli spaces, to introduce invariants for knots and 3-manifolds.

Moduli Spaces of Stable Polygons and Symplectic Structures on $\bar{M}_{0,n}$

In this paper, certain natural and elementary polygonal objects in Euclidean space, {\it the stable polygons}, are introduced, and the novel moduli spaces ${\bfmit M}_{{\bf r}, ε}$ of stable polygons are constructed as complex analytic spaces. Quite unexpectedly, these new moduli spaces are shown to be projective and isomorphic to the moduli space $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$ of the Deligne-Mumford stable curves of genus 0. Further, built into the structures of stable polygons are some natural data leading toward to a family of (classes of) symplectic (Kähler) forms. To some degree, ${\bfmit M}_{{\bf r}, ε}$ may be considered as symplectic counterparts of $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$ and Kapranov's Chow quotient construction of $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$. All these together brings up a new tool to study the Kähler topology of $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$.

Moduli spaces of PU(2)-monopoles

The goal of this article was the S^1-equivariant transversality-problem and the compactification-problem for the moduli spaces of (perturbed) PU(2)-monopoles. A substantially improved version entitled "Moduli spaces of PU(2)-monopoles (revised version)" which gives simpler, clearer proofs of the transversality results, has been published on arxiv in June 99 and appeared in Asian J. Math, see Moduli spaces of PU(2)-Monopoles, Asian J. Math. Vol. 4, No. 2 (2000), 391-436.
