Unusual pressure effects on the superconductivity of indirectly electron-doped (Ba1-xLax)Fe2As2 epitaxial films

Applying an external pressure to indirectly electron-doped 122-type (Ba1-xLax)Fe2As2 epitaxial films enhances the superconducting critical temperature (Tc) up to 30.3 K. Different from the other family compounds, the Tc is enhanced not only in the under-doped region but also in the optimally doped and over-doped regions. Narrowing of the superconducting transition width and an increase in the carrier density take place simultaneously in the whole doping region, except at the heavily over-doped limit. This characteristic is unique to and observed only in (Ba1-xLax)Fe2As2, in which the La doping is stabilized via non-equilibrium growth of the vapor phase epitaxy, among the 122-type iron-based superconductors, AFe2As2 (A = Ba, Sr, and Ca).

Topological pumping in class-D superconducting wires

We study adiabatic pumping at a normal metal/class-D superconductor hybrid interface when superconductivity is induced through the proximity effect in a spin-orbit coupled nanowire in the presence of a tilted Zeeman field. When the induced order parameter in the nanowire is non-uniform, the phase diagram has isolated trivial regions surrounded by topological ones. We show that in this case the pumped charge is quantized in units of the elementary charge $e$ and has a topological nature.

A combined experimental and computational study of the pressure dependence of the vibrational spectrum of solid picene C_22H_14

We present high-quality optical data and density functional perturbation theory calculations for the vibrational spectrum of solid picene (C$_{22}$H$_{14}$) under pressure up to 8 GPa. First-principles calculations reproduce with a remarkable accuracy the pressure effects on both frequency and intensities of the phonon peaks experimentally observed . Through a detailed analysis of the phonon eigenvectors, We use the projection on molecular eigenmodes to unambiguously fit the experimental spectra, resolving complicated spectral structures, in a system with hundreds of phonon modes. With these projections, we can also quantify the loss of molecular character under pressure. Our results indicate that picene, despite a \sim 20 % compression of the unit cell, remains substantially a molecular solid up to 8 GPa, with phonon modes displaying a smooth and uniform hardening with pressure. The Grueneisen parameter of the 1380 cm^{-1} a_1 Raman peak ($γ_p=0.1$) is much lower than the effective value ($γ_d=0.8$) due to K doping. This is an indication that the phonon softening in K doped samples is mainly due to charge transfer and electron-phonon coupling.

The electronic specific heat of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (x=0 to 1.0) from 2K to 380K

Using a high-resolution differential technique we have determined the electronic specific heat coefficient gamma(T) of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 with x=0 to 1.0, at temperatures (T) from 2K to 380K and in magnetic fields H=0 to 13T. In the normal state gamma_n(x,T) increases strongly with x at low temperature, compatible with a mass renormalisation ~12 at x=1, and decreases weakly with x at high temperature. A superconducting transition is seen in all samples from x=0.2 to 1, with transition temperatures and condensation energies peaking sharply at x=0.4. Superconducting coherence lengths xi_{ab}~20Å and xi_c~3Å are estimated from an analysis of Gaussian fluctuations. For many dopings we see features in the H and T-dependences of gamma_s(T,H) in the superconducting state that suggest superconducting gaps in three distinct bands. A broad "knee" and a sharp mean-field-like peak are typical of two coupled gaps. However, several samples show a shoulder above the sharp peak with an abrupt onset at T_{c,s} and a T-dependence gamma_s(T)\propto\sqrt{1-T/T_{c,s}}. We provide strong evidence that the shoulder is not due to doping inhomogeneity and suggest it is a distinct gap with an unconventional T-dependence Delta_s(T)\propto(1-T/T_{c,s})^{0.75} near T_{c,s}. We estimate band fractions and T=0 gaps from 3-band alpha-model fits to our data and compare the x-dependences of the band fractions with spectroscopic studies of the Fermi surface.

Topological and edge state properties of a three-band model for Sr2RuO4

Modeling the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 through a three-orbital tight-binding model we investigate topological properties and edge states assuming chiral p-wave pairing. In concordance with experiments the three Fermi surfaces consist of two electron-like and one hole-like one corresponding to the alpha-, beta- and gamma-band on the level of a two-dimensional system. The quasi-particle spectra and other physical quantities of the superconducting phase are calculated by means of a self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach for a ribbon shaped system. While a full quasiparticle excitation gap is realized in the bulk system, at the edges gapless states appear some of which have linear and others nearly flat dispersion around zero energy. This study shows the interplay between spin-orbit coupling induced spin currents, chiral edge currents and correlation driven surface magnetism. The topological nature of the chiral p-wave state manifests itself in the gamma-band characterized by an integer Chern number. As the gamma-band is close to a Lifshitz transition in Sr2RuO4, changing the sign of the Chern number, the topological nature may be rather fragile.

Enhanced low-energy magnetic excitations via suppression of the itinerancy in Fe0.98-zCuzTe0.5Se0.5

We have performed resistivity and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on three samples of Fe0.98-zCuzTe0.5Se0.5 with z = 0, 0.02, and 0.1. It is found that with increasing Cu doping the sample's resistivity deviates progressively from that of a metal. However, in contrast to expectations that replacing Fe with Cu would suppress the magnetic correlations, the low-energy (no larger than 12 meV) magnetic scattering is enhanced in strength, with greater spectral weight and longer dynamical spin-spin correlation lengths. Such enhancements can be a consequence of either enlarged local moments or a slowing down of the spin fluctuations. In either case, the localization of the conduction states induced by the Cu doping should play a critical role. Our results are not applicable to models that treat 3d transition metal dopants simply as effective electron donors.

Electron doping evolution of the magnetic excitations in BaFe2-xNixAs2

We use inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectroscopy to study the magnetic excitations spectra throughout the Brioullion zone in electron-doped iron pnictide superconductors BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ with $x=0.096,0.15,0.18$. While the $x=0.096$ sample is near optimal superconductivity with $T_c=20$ K and has coexisting static incommensurate magnetic order, the $x=0.15,0.18$ samples are electron-overdoped with reduced $T_c$ of 14 K and 8 K, respectively, and have no static antiferromagnetic (AF) order. In previous INS work on undoped ($x=0$) and electron optimally doped ($x=0.1$) samples, the effect of electron-doping was found to modify spin waves in the parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ below $\sim$100 meV and induce a neutron spin resonance at the commensurate AF ordering wave vector that couples with superconductivity. While the new data collected on the $x=0.096$ sample confirms the overall features of the earlier work, our careful temperature dependent study of the resonance reveals that the resonance suddenly changes its $Q$-width below $T_c$ similar to that of the optimally hole-doped iron pnictides Ba$_{0.67}$K$_{0.33}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. In addition, we establish the dispersion of the resonance and find it to change from commensurate to transversely incommensurate with increasing energy. Upon further electron-doping to overdoped iron pnictides with $x=0.15$ and 0.18, the resonance becomes weaker and transversely incommensurate at all energies, while spin excitations above $\sim$100 meV are still not much affected. Our absolute spin excitation intensity measurements throughout the Brillouin zone for $x=0.096,0.15,0.18$ confirm the notion that the low-energy spin excitation coupling with itinerant electron is important for superconductivity in these materials, even though the high-energy spin excitations are weakly doping dependent.

Weak magnetism and the Mott-state of vanadium in superconducting Sr2VO3FeAs

We report neutron scattering data and DFT calculations of the stoichiometric iron-arsenide superconductor Sr2VO3FeAs. Rietveld refinements of neutron powder patterns confirm the ideal composition without oxygen deficiencies. Experiments with polarized neutrons prove weak magnetic ordering in the V-sublattice of Sr2VO3FeAs at ~ 45 K with a probable propagation vector q = (1/8,1/8,0). The ordered moment of ~ 0.1 muB is too small to remove the V-3d bands from the Fermi level by magnetic exchange splitting, and much smaller than predicted from a recent LDA+U study. By using DFT calculations with a GGA+EECE functional we recover the typical quasi-nested Fermi-surface even without magnetic moment. From this we suggest that the V-atoms are in a Mott-state where the electronic correlations are dominated by on-site Coulomb-repulsion which shifts the V-3d states away from the Fermi energy. Our results are consistent with photoemission data and clearly reveal that Sr2VO3FeAs is a typical iron-arsenide superconductor with quasi-nested hole- and electron-like Fermi surface sheets, and constitutes no new paradigm. We suggest that intrinsic electron-doping through V3+/V4+ mixed valence is responsible for the absence of SDW ordering.

Spatial Inhomogeneity of the Superconducting Gap and Order Parameter in FeSe_{0.4}Te_{0.6}

We have performed a low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study of the iron chalcogenide superconductor FeSe_{0.4}Te_{0.6} with T_{C}~14 K. Spatially resolved measurements of the superconducting gap reveal substantial inhomogeneity on a nanometer length scale. Analysis of the structure of the gap seen in tunneling spectra by comparison with calculated spectra for different superconducting order parameters (s-wave, d-wave, and anisotropic s-wave) yields the best agreement for an order parameter with anisotropic s-wave symmetry with an anisotropy of ~40%. The temperature dependence of the superconducting gap observed in places with large and small gap size indicates that it is indeed the superconducting transition temperature which is inhomogeneous. The temperature dependence of the gap size is substantially larger than would be expected from BCS theory. An analysis of the local gap size in relation with the local chemical composition shows almost no correlation with the local concentration of Se-/Te-atoms at the surface.

Spatially Modulated Electronic Nematicity in the Three-Band Model of Cuprate Superconductors

Charge order in cuprate superconductors is a possible source of anomalous electronic properties in the underdoped regime. Intra-unit cell charge ordering tendencies point to electronic nematic order involving oxygen orbitals. In this context we investigate charge instabilities in the Emery model and calculate the charge susceptibility within diagrammatic perturbation theory. In this approach, the onset of charge order is signalled by a divergence of the susceptibility. Our calculations reveal three different kinds of order: a commensurate ($q=0$) nematic order, and two incommensurate nematic phases with modulation wavevectors that are either axial or oriented along the Brillouin zone diagonal. We examine the nematic phase diagram as a function of the filling, the interaction parameters, and the band structure. We also present results for the excitation spectrum near the nematic instability, and show that a soft nematic mode emerges from the particle-hole continuum at the transition. The Fermi surface reconstructions that accompany the modulated nematic phases are discussed with respect to their relevance for magneto-oscillation and photoemission measurements. The modulated nematic phases that emerge from the three-band Emery model are compared to those found previously in one-band models.

Topological superconducting phase in helical Shiba chains

Recently, it has been suggested that topological superconductivity and Majorana end states can be realized in a chain of magnetic impurities on the surface of an s-wave superconductor when the magnetic moments form a spin helix as a result of the RKKY interaction mediated by the superconducting substrate. Here, we investigate this scenario theoretically by developing a tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes description starting from the Shiba bound states induced by the individual magnetic impurities. While the resulting model Hamiltonian has similarities with the Kitaev model for one-dimensional spinless p-wave superconductors, there are also important differences, most notably the long-range nature of hopping and pairing as well as the complex hopping amplitudes. We use both analytical and numerical approaches to explore the consequences of these differences for the phase diagram and the localization properties of the Majorana end states when the Shiba chain is in a topological superconducting phase.

Coupling of the A_{1g} As-phonon to magnetism in iron pnictides

Charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom are strongly entangled in iron superconductors. A neat consequence of this entanglement is the behavior of the A_{1g} As-phonon resonance in the different polarization symmetries of Raman spectroscopy when undergoing the magneto-structural transition. In this work we show that the observed behavior could be a direct consequence of the coupling of the phonons with the electronic excitations in the anisotropic magnetic state. We discuss this scenario within a five orbital tight-binding model coupled to phonons via the dependence of the Slater-Koster parameters on the As position. We identify two qualitatively different channels of the electron-phonon interaction: a geometrical one related to the Fe-As-Fe angle and another one associated with the modification upon As displacement of the Fe-As energy integrals pdsigma and pdpi. While both mechanisms result in a finite B_{1g} response, the behavior of the phonon intensity in the A_{1g} and B_{1g} Raman polarization geometries is qualitatively different when the coupling is driven by the angle or by the energy integral dependence. We discuss our results in view of the experimental reports.

Majorana Fermions in superconducting wires: effects of long-range hopping, broken time-reversal symmetry and potential landscapes

We present a comprehensive study of two of the most experimentally relevant extensions of Kitaev's spinless model of a 1D p-wave superconductor: those involving (i) longer range hopping and superconductivity and (ii) inhomogeneous potentials. We commence with a pedagogical review of the spinless model and, as a means of characterizing topological phases exhibited by the systems studied here, we introduce bulk topological invariants as well as those derived from an explicit consideration of boundary modes. In time-reversal invariant systems, we find that the longer range hopping leads to topological phases characterized by multiple Majorana modes. In particular, we investigate a spin model, which respects a duality and maps to a fermionic model with multiple Majorana modes; we highlight the connection between these topological phases and the broken symmetry phases in the original spin model. In the presence of time-reversal symmetry breaking terms, we show that the topological phase diagram is characterized by an extended gapless regime. For the case of inhomogeneous potentials, we explore phase diagrams of periodic, quasiperiodic, and disordered systems. We present a detailed mapping between normal state localization properties of such systems and the topological phases of the corresponding superconducting systems. This powerful tool allows us to leverage the analyses of Hofstadter's butterfly and the vast literature on Anderson localization to the question of Majorana modes in superconducting quasiperiodic and disordered systems, respectively. We briefly touch upon the synergistic effects that can be expected in cases where long-range hopping and disorder are both present.

Magnetic orders, excitations, and phase transitions in Fe_1+yTe

We study the magnetic properties of Fe_1+y Te, a parent compound of the iron-based high-temperature superconductors. Motivated by recent neutron scattering experiments, we show that a spin-1 exchange model, supplemented by a single-ion spin anisotropy, accounts well for the experimentally observed low temperature magnetic phase diagram, that exhibits a commensurate bicollinear order at low Fe dopings (y < 0.12) and an incommensurate spin-spiral order at high Fe dopings (y > 0.12). We suggest that the commensurate-incommensurate transition at y = 0.12 is due to the competition between the exchange interaction and the local spin anisotropy. At low Fe dopings, the single-ion spin anisotropy is strong and pins the spins along the easy axis, which, together with the spatially anisotropic exchanges, induces a unusual bicollinear commensurate magnetic order. The low-energy spin-wave excitation is gapped due to the explict breaking of spin-rotational symmetry by the local spin anisotropy. At high Fe dopings, the single-ion anisotropy is weak, and the exchange favors an incommensurate coplanar state. The incommensurate magnetic wavevector averages out the spin anisotropy so that a gapless low-energy spin-wave excitation is obtained. We also analyze the low-energy hydrodynamic model and use it to describe the magneto-structural transition and the static and dynamical spin structure factors across the magnetic ordering transitions.

From Andreev bound states to Majorana fermions in topological wires on superconducting substrates : a story of mutation

We study the proximity effect in a topological nanowire tunnel coupled to an s-wave superconducting substrate. We use a general Green's function approach that allows us to study the evolution of the Andreev bound states in the wire into Majorana fermions. We show that the strength of the tunnel coupling induces a topological transition in which the Majorana fermionic states can be destroyed when the coupling is very strong. Moreover, we provide a phenomenologial study of the effects of disorder in the superconductor on the formation of Majorana fermions. We note a non-trivial effect of a quasiparticle broadening term which can take the wire from a topological into a non-topological phase in certain ranges of parameters. Our results have also direct consequences for a nanowire coupled to an inhomogenous superconductor.

Systematic investigation of the effects of disorder at the lowest order throughout the BCS-BEC crossover

A systematic investigation of the effects of disorder on the BCS-BEC crossover at the lowest order in the impurity potential is presented for the normal phase above the critical temperature Tc. Starting with the t-matrix approach for the clean system, by which pairing correlations between opposite-spin fermions evolve from the weak-coupling (BCS) to the strong-coupling (BEC) limits by increasing the strength of the attractive inter-particle interaction, all possible diagrammatic processes are considered where the effects of a disordered potential are retained in the self-energy at the lowest order. An accurate numerical investigation is carried out for all these diagrammatic terms, to determine which of them are mostly important throughout the BCS-BEC crossover. Explicit calculations for the values of Tc, the chemical potential, and the Tan's contact are carried out. In addition, the effect of disorder on the single-particle spectral function is analyzed, and a correlation is found between an increase of Tc and a widening of the pseudo-gap energy at Tc on the BCS side of unitarity in the presence of disorder, while on the BEC side of unitarity the presence of disorder favors the collapse of the underlying Fermi surface. The present investigation is meant to orient future studies when the effects of disorder will be considered at higher orders, with the purpose of limiting the proliferation of diagrammatic terms in which interaction and disorder are considered simultaneously.

Doping and critical-temperature dependence of the energy gaps in Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 thin films

The dependence of the superconducting gaps in epitaxial Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_2As_2 thin films on the nominal doping x (0.04 \leq x \leq 0.15) was studied by means of point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy. The normalized conductance curves were well fitted by using the 2D Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model with two nodeless, isotropic gaps -- although the possible presence of gap anisotropies cannot be completely excluded. The amplitudes of the two gaps Δ_{S} and Δ_{L} show similar monotonic trends as a function of the local critical temperature T_{c}^{A} (measured in the same point contacts) from 25 K down to 8 K. The dependence of the gaps on x is well correlated to the trend of the critical temperature, i.e. to the shape of the superconducting region in the phase diagram. When analyzed within a simple three-band Eliashberg model, this trend turns out to be compatible with a mechanism of superconducting coupling mediated by spin fluctuations, whose characteristic energy scales with T_{c} according to the empirical law Ω_{0}= 4.65*k_{B}*T_{c}, and with a total electron-boson coupling strength λ_{tot}= 2.22 for x \leq 0.10 (i.e. up to optimal doping) that slightly decreases to λ_{tot}= 1.82 in the overdoped samples (x = 0.15).

Nonlocal transport and heating in superconductors under dual-bias conditions

We report on an experimental and theoretical study of nonlocal transport in superconductor hybrid structures, where two normal-metal leads are attached to a central superconducting wire. As a function of voltage bias applied to both normal-metal electrodes, we find surprisingly large nonlocal conductance signals, almost of the same magnitude as the local conductance. We demonstrate that these signals are the result of strong heating of the superconducting wire, and that under symmetric bias conditions, heating mimics the effect of Cooper pair splitting.
