Superconductivity at 55 K in iron-based F-doped layered quaternary compound Sm[O1-xFx]FeAs

Here we report the superconductivity in the iron-based oxyarsenide Sm[O1-xFx]FeAs, with the onset resistivity transition temperature at 55.0 K and Meissner transition at 54.6 K. This compound has the same crystal structure as LaOFeAs with shrunk crystal lattices, and becomes the superconductor with the highest critical temperature among all materials besides copper oxides.

Phase Diagram and Quantum Critical Point in Newly Discovered Superconductors: SmO_{1-x}F_xFeAs

The magnetic fluctuations associated with a quantum critical point (QCP) are widely believed to cause the non-Fermi liquid behaviors and unconventional superconductivities, for example, in heavy fermion systems and high temperature cuprate superconductors. Recently, superconductivity has been discovered in iron-based layered compound $LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$ with $T_c$=26 K\cite{yoichi}, and it competes with spin-density-wave (SDW) order\cite{dong}. Neutron diffraction shows a long-rang SDW-type antiferromagnetic (AF) order at $\sim 134$ K in LaOFeAs\cite{cruz,mcguire}. Therefore, a possible QCP and its role in this system are of great interests. Here we report the detailed phase diagram and anomalous transport properties of the new high-Tc superconductors $SmO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$ discovered by us\cite{chenxh}. It is found that superconductivity emerges at $x\sim$0.07, and optimal doping takes place in the $x\sim$0.20 sample with highest $T_c \sim $54 K. While $T_c$ increases monotonically with doping, the SDW order is rapidly suppressed, suggesting a QCP around $x \sim$0.14. As manifestations, a linear temperature dependence of the resistivity shows up at high temperatures in the $x<0.14$ regime, but at low temperatures just above $T_c$ in the $x>0.14$ regime; a drop in carrier density evidenced by a pronounced rise in Hall coefficient are observed, which mimic the high-$T_c$ cuprates. The simultaneous occurrence of order, carrier density change and criticality makes a compelling case for a quantum critical point in this system.

One-electron scattering rate and normal-state linear-$T$ resistivity of the cuprates

Here we use a description of the electronic correlations contained in the Hubbard model on the square-lattice perturbed by very weak three-dimensional uniaxial anisotropy in terms of the residual interactions of charge $c$ fermions and spin-neutral composite two-spinon $s1$ fermions. Excellent quantitative agreement with the anisotropic linear-$ω$ one-electron scattering rate and normal-state linear-$T$ resistivity observed in experiments on hole-doped cuprates with critical concentrations $x_c\approx 0.05$ and $x_*\approx 0.27$ is achieved. Our results provide strong evidence that the normal-state linear-$T$ resistivity is a manifestation of low-temperature scale-invariant physics.

Hidden quantum spin gap state in the static stripe phase of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$

Low energy spin excitations were investigated in the static stripe phase of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals. For x = 1/8 in which long-range static stripe order exists, an energy gap of E_g = 4 meV exists in the excitation spectrum in addition to strong quasi-elastic, incommensurate spin fluctuations associated with the static stripes. When x increases, the spectral weight of the spin fluctuations shifts from the quasi-elastic continuum to the excitation spectrum above E_g. The dynamic correlation length as a function of energy and the temperature evolution of the energy spectrum suggest a phase separation of two distinct magnetic phases in real space.

Superconductivity of powder-in-tube LaO0.9F0.1FeAs wires

We demonstrate that Fe sheathed LaO0.9F0.1FeAs wires with Ti as a buffer layer were successfully fabricated by the powder-in-tube (PIT) method. Comparing to the common two-step vacuum quartz tube synthesis method, the PIT method is more convenient and safe for synthesizing the novel iron-based layered superconductors. Structural analysis by mean of x-ray diffraction shows that the main phase of LaO0.9F0.1FeAs was obtained by this synthesis method. The transition temperature of the LaO0.9F0.1FeAs wire is around 25 K. The micrograph shows a homogeneous microstructure with a grain size of 1-3 micrometers. The results suggest that the PIT process is promising in preparing high-quality iron-based layered superconductor wires.

Comment on "Superinsulator and Quantum Synchronization"

We show that the "theory" of "superinsulating" state presented by V.Vinokur et al (Nature vol. 452, p. 613, 2008) and Fistul et al (Phys. Rev. Lett. vol. 100, 086805, 2008) is essentially incorrect due to a sequence of errors in the theoretical analysis of the standard model of Josephson arrays which properties have been carefully studied and described in the literature. The line of calculations suggested in these articles lead to unphysical results. In particular, the calculations predict a direct current flowing through a capacitor. Moreover, this current may flow even in the absence of voltage - a sort of supercurrent flowing in the "superinsulating" state. We also question that the theoretical model employed in these works, even if treated correctly, is applicable to the analysis of experimental data on homogeneously disordered superconductive films.

Crossover in the local density of states of mesoscopic SNS junctions

Andreev levels deplete energy states above the superconductive gap, which leads to the peculiar nonmonotonous crossover in the local density of states of mesoscopic superconductor/normal-metal/superconductor junctions. This effect is especially pronounced in the case when the normal metal bridge length is small compared to the superconductive coherence length. Remarkable property of the crossover function is that it vanishes not only at the proximity induced gap but also at the superconductive gap. Analytical expressions for the density of states at the both gap edges, as well as general structure of the crossover are discussed.

Spin-resolved spectra of Shiba multiplets from Mn impurities in MgB_2

We study the effect of magnetic Mn ions on the two-band superconductor MgB_2, and compute both the total and spin resolved scanning tunneling spectrum in the vicinity of the magnetic impurity. We show that when the internal structure of the Mn ion's d-shell is taken into account, multiple Shiba states appear in the spectrum. The presence of these multiplets could alter significantly the overall interpretation of local tunneling spectra for a wide range of superconducting hosts and magnetic impurities.

A 57Fe Moessbauer Spectroscopy Study of the 7 K Superconductor LaFePO

A polycrystalline sample of superconducting LaFePO was prepared in a tin flux at 1123 K. The structure was determined from single crystal data (ZrCuSiAs-type, P4/nmm, a = 3.9610(1), c = 8.5158(2) A, Z = 2) and the phase analysis was performed by the Rietveld method. LaFePO is Pauli-paramagnetic and becomes superconducting at 7 K after removing the ferromagnetic impurity phase Fe2P from the sample. 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy measurements at 298, 77, 4.2 and 4 K show single signals at isomer shifts around 0.35 mm/s, subject to weak quadrupole splitting. At 4 K, a symmetric line broadening appears, resulting from a small transferred magnetic hyperfine field of 1.15(1) T and accompanied by an angle of 54.7(5) between Bhf and Vzz, the main component of the electric field gradient tensor.

A possible mechanism of concurring diagonal and off-diagonal long-range order for soft interactions

This paper is a contribution to the theory of coherent crystals. We present arguments claiming that negative minima in the Fourier transform of a soft pair interaction may give rise to the coexistence of diagonal and off-diagonal long-range order at high densities, and that this coexistence may be detectable due to a periodicity seen on the off-diagonal part of the one-body reduced density matrix, without breaking translation invariance. As an illustration, we study the ground state of a homogenous system of bosons in continuous space, from the interaction retaining only the Fourier modes $v(\k)$ belonging to a single nonzero wave number $|\k|=q$. The result is a mean-field model. We prove that for $v(\k)>0$ the ground state is asymptotically fully Bose-condensed, while for $v(\k)<0$ at densities exceeding a multiple of $\hbar^2 q^2/2m|v(\k)|$ it exhibits both Bose-Einstein condensation and diagonal long-range order, and the latter can be seen on both the one- and the two-body density matrix.

Period Doubling in Small Multiply Connected Superconductors

It is shown that for superconductors with circumference $2πR$ approaching BCS coherence length $ξ_0$ minimal period of the response of all thermodynamic quantities to external magnetic field is set by $hc/e$ i.e. twice the corresponding value for the bulk case. This is explained by the dependence of internal energy of Cooper pairs on their center of mass motion which leads, in particular, to a transition offset between different current-carrying states. Explicit calculation of the transition offset is done for the case of s-wave superconducting cylinder with $R \gg ξ_0$ and turns out to be exponentially small. A possible enhancement of the effect for nodal superconductors is suggested. Similar conclusions should also apply to the response of charged or neutral superfluids to rotation.

Magnetic measurements and 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy in oxygen deficient SmFeAsO0.85

Magnetic measurements and 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy studies were performed on oxygen- deficient high temperature superconductor SmFeAsO0.85 with TC=52.4 K. The upper-critical behavior (HC2) values were extracted from the real part of ac measurements. The field dependence of HC2 is consistent with a two band model. Mössbauer spectra below and above TC consist of a singlet and a doublet, which are attributed to Fe ions which have two or one oxygen ions in their close vicinity, respectively. No change is observed in the major (~75%) singlet related to Fe ions surrounded by two oxygen ions. On the other hand, the doublet which senses oxygen vacancies shows a well defined magnetic sextet below TC. This indicates coexistence on a microscopic level of the two mutually exclusive states namely: superconductivity which is confined to the Fe-As layers and magnetism, in the same layers. Alternatively, the hyperfine parameters of the doublet are similar to the reported values of FeAs which orders magnetically at 77 K. Thus the magnetic features observed below TC, may be related to FeAs as an extra phase.

Can doping graphite trigger room temperature superconductivity? Evidence for granular high-temperature superconductivity in water-treated graphite powder

Trying to dope graphite flakes we found that the magnetization of pure, several tens of micrometers grain size graphite powder and after a simple treatment with pure water shows clear and reproducible granular superconducting behavior with a critical temperature above 300K. The observed magnetic characteristics as a function of temperature, magnetic field and time, provide evidence for weakly coupled grains through Josephson interaction, revealing the existence of superconducting vortices.

Interplay between superconductivity and pseudogap state in bilayer cuprate superconductors

The interplay between the superconducting gap and normal-state pseudogap in the bilayer cuprate superconductors is studied based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. It is shown that the charge carrier interaction directly from the interlayer coherent hopping in the kinetic energy by exchanging spin excitations does not provide the contribution to the normal-state pseudogap in the particle-hole channel and superconducting gap in the particle-particle channel, while only the charge carrier interaction directly from the intralayer hopping in the kinetic energy by exchanging spin excitations induces the normal-state pseudogap in the particle-hole channel and superconducting gap in the particle-particle channel, and then the two-gap behavior is a universal feature for the single layer and bilayer cuprate superconductors.

Co-intercalation of Ammonia molecules between FeSe layers in Ba-doped FeSe superconductor

We have synthesized a Ba-doped FeSe superconductor using liquid ammonia, and investigated in detail the structure and composition of the Ba-FeSe phase. In the superconducting phase, both the Tc and the shielding fraction are almost unchanged even if the nominal composition of Ba is varied in the region from 0.3 to 0.7. The optimized Tc is 38.8 K. We have determined the structure of the superconducting phase with X-ray powder diffraction (using synchrotron radiation) and here describe the co-intercalation of Ba and NH3 molecules between the FeSe layers.

Displacement Waves of Oxygen Atoms in Bi,Pb-2223 Lattice of Composites Annealed in Oxygen Reduced (O2+N2) Atmosphere

Annealing of Bi,Pb-2223/Ag composites in (O2+N2) atmosphere at 820-780C is believed to reduce the number of the accompanying phases, to make contacts between crystallites closer and to increase the critical current. The goals of this study were to reveal the changes in the 2223 lattice at annealing in the reduced oxygen atmosphere, to elucidate the reasons of these changes and to discuss their effect on the ceramics superconductivity. After the annealing the transversely-polarized displacement waves of oxygen atoms in [010]2223 direction have been found in the 2223 phase by electron diffraction analysis. These waves could appear due to the lack of oxygen in the 2223 lattice or to the nitrogen penetration in it. As demonstrated by the X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy and nuclear microanalysis, nitrogen does not interact with the 2223 lattice, and the oxygen index decreases to 9.67, which is lower than the stoichiometric. Thus, the atomic displacement waves result from the lack of oxygen in Bi-O bilayers.

Sputtered TiN films for superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators

We present a systematic study of the properties of TiN films by varying the deposition conditions in an ultra-high-vacuum reactive magnetron sputtering chamber. By increasing the deposition pressure from 2 to 9 mTorr while keeping a nearly stoichiometric composition of Ti(1-x)N(x) (x=0.5), the film resistivity increases, the dominant crystal orientation changes from (100) to (111), grain boundaries become clearer, and the strong compressive strain changes to weak tensile strain. The TiN films absorb a high concentration of contaminants including hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen when they are exposed to air after deposition. With the target-substrate distance set to 88 mm the contaminant levels increase from ~0.1% to ~10% as the pressure is increased from 2 to 9 mTorr. The contaminant concentrations also correlate with in-plane distance from the center of the substrate and increase by roughly two orders of magnitude as the target-substrate distance is increased from 88 mm to 266 mm. These contaminants are found to strongly influence the properties of TiN films. For instance, the resistivity of stoichiometric films increases by around a factor of 5 as the oxygen content increases from 0.1% to 11%. These results suggest that the sputtered TiN particle energy is critical in determining the TiN film properties, and that it is important to control this energy to obtain high-quality TiN films. Superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators made from a series of nearly stoichiometric films grown at pressures from 2 mTorr to 7 mTorr show an increase in intrinsic quality factor from ~10^4 to ~10^6 as the magnitude of the compressive strain decreases from nearly 3800 MPa to approximately 150 MPa and the oxygen content increases from 0.1% to 8%. The films with a higher oxygen content exhibit lower loss, but the nonuniformity of the oxygen incorporation hinders the use of sputtered TiN in larger circuits.
