Equivariant Holomorphic Morse Inequalities I: A Heat Kernel Proof

Assume that the circle group acts holomorphically on a compact Kähler manifold with isolated fixed points and that the action can be lifted holomorphically to a holomorphic Hermitian vector bundle. We give a heat kernel proof of the equivariant holomorphic Morse inequalities. We use some techniques developed by Bismut and Lebeau. These inequalities, first obtained by Witten using a different argument, produce bounds on the multiplicities of weights occurring in the twisted Dolbeault cohomologies in terms of the data of the fixed points.

Lagrangian embedding, Maslov indexes and Integer graded symplectic Floer cohomology

We define an integer graded symplectic Floer cohomology and a spectral sequence which are new invariants for monotone Lagrangian sub-manifolds and exact isotopies. Such an integer graded Floer cohomology is an integral lifting of the usual Floer-Oh cohomology with $Z_{\Si (L)}$ grading. As one of applications of the spectral sequence, we offer an affirmative answer to an Audin's question for oriented, embedded, monotone Lagrangian tori, i.e. $\Si (L) = 2$.

Polygon spaces and Grassmannians

We study the moduli spaces of polygons in R^2 and R^3, identifying them with subquotients of 2-Grassmannians using a symplectic version of the Gel'fand-MacPherson correspondence. We show that the bending flows defined by Kapovich-Millson arise as a reduction of the Gel'fand-Cetlin system on the Grassmannian, and with these determine the pentagon and hexagon spaces up to equivariant symplectomorphism. Other than invocation of Delzant's theorem, our proofs are purely polygon-theoretic in nature.

Equivariant torsion of locally symmetric spaces

The equivariant holomorphic torsion of a compact locally symmetric manifold and an automorphism is expressed as a special value of a zeta function built out of geometric data (closed geodesics) of the manifold.

Connectedness of spaces of symplectic embeddings

We prove that the space of symplectic packings of ${\Bbb C}P^2$ by $k$ equal balls is connected for $3\leq k\leq 6$. The proof is based on Gromov-Witten invariants and on the inflation technique due to Lalonde and McDuff.

Supermanifold Forms and Integration. A Dual Theory

We investigate forms on supermanifolds defined as Lagrangians of ``copaths'' (that is, systems of equations, which may or may not specify submanifolds). For this, we consider direct products $M^{n|m}\times\Bbb R^{r|s}$ and study isomorphisms corresponding to simultaneously advancing the number of additional parameters $r|s$ and the number of equations. We define an exteriour differential in terms of variational derivatives w.r.t. a copath and establish its main properties. In the resulting stable picture we obtain infinite complexes $\D:\Om{r}{s}\to\Om{r+1}{s}$ for $M^{n|m}$, where $0 \le s \le m$ and $r$ can be any integer. For $r\ge 0$ a canonical isomorphism with forms constructed as Lagrangians of $r|s$-paths is established. We discover the ``lacking half'' of forms on supermanifolds: $r|s$-forms with $r<0$, previously unknown except for $s=m$. (They have been partly replaced earlier by an augmentation of the ``non-negative'' part of the complexes.) All these results are new. The study of these questions is in progress now.

Non-abelian convexity by symplectic cuts

In this paper we extend the results of Kirwan et alii on convexity properties of the moment map for Hamiltonian group actions, and on the connectedness of the fibers of the moment map, to the case of non-compact orbifolds. Our motivation is twofold. First, the category of orbifolds is important in symplectic geometry because, generically, the symplectic quotient of a symplectic manifold is an orbifold. Second, our proof is conceptually very simple since it reduces the non-abelian case to the abelian case.

The Fermi Flow and its Application to Geometry

We introduce the notion of Fermi flow for hypersurfaces in Riemannian manifolds. It turns out that this is a powerful tool to study the geometry of distance surfaces about a given initial hypersurface. Some of the results in this paper are known in one form or another, however the aim is to demonstrate how they can all be derived by the same method and proved in a very simple manner. In addition we obtain some new results and results that are stronger than those stated in the literature.

Constant scalar curvature metrics with isolated singularities

We extend the results and methods of \cite{MP} to prove the existence of constant positive scalar curvature metrics $g$ which are complete and conformal to the standard metric on $S^N \setminus Λ$, where $Λ$ is a disjoint union of submanifolds of dimensions between 0 and $(N-2)/2$. The existence of solutions with isolated singularities occupies the majority of the paper; their existence was previously established by Schoen \cite{S}, but the proof we give here, based on the techniques of \cite{MP}, is more direct, and provides more information about their geometry. When $Λ$ is discrete we also establish that these solutions are smooth points in the moduli spaces of all such solutions introduced and studied in \cite{MPU1} and \cite{MPU2}

A canonical way to deform a Lagrangian submanifold

We derive some important geometric identities for Lagrangian submanifolds immersed in a Kähler manifold and prove that there exists a canonical way to deform a Lagrangian submanifold by a parabolic flow through a family of Lagrangian submanifolds if the ambient space is a Ricci-flat Calabi-Yau manifold.

Theory of connections on graded principal bundles

The geometry of graded principal bundles is discussed in the framework of graded manifold theory of Kostant-Berezin-Leites. In particular, we prove that a graded principal bundle is globally trivial if and only if it admits a global graded section and, further, that the sheaf of vertical derivations on such a bundle coincides with the graded distribution induced by the action of the structure graded Lie group. This result leads to a natural definition of the graded connection in terms of graded distributions; its relation with Lie superalgebra-valued graded differential forms is also exhibited. Finally, we define the curvature for the graded connection; we prove that the curvature controls the involutivity of the horizontal graded distribution corresponding to the graded connection.

Harmonic two-spheres in compact symmetric spaces, revisited

Uhlenbeck introduced an invariant, the (minimal) uniton number, of harmonic 2-spheres in a Lie group G and proved that when G=SU(n) the uniton number cannot exceed n-1. In this paper, using new methods inspired by Morse Theory, we explain this result and extend it to an arbitrary compact group G. The same methods also yield Weierstrass formulae for these harmonic maps and simple proofs of most of the known classification theorems for harmonic 2-spheres in symmetric spaces.

Lectures on Gromov invariants for symplectic 4-manifolds

These are notes of lectures given at the NATO Summer School, Montreal 1995. Taubes's recent spectacular work setting up a correspondence between $J$-holomorphic curves in symplectic 4-manifolds and solutions of the Seiberg-Witten equations counts $J$-holomorphic curves in a somewhat new way. The "standard" theory concerns itself with moduli spaces of connected curves, and gives rise to Gromov-Witten invariants. However, Taubes's curves arise as zero sets of sections and so need not be connected. These notes are in the main expository. We first discuss the invariants as Taubes defined them, and then discuss some alternatives, showing, for example, a way of dealing with multiply-covered exceptional spheres. We also calculate some examples, in particular finding the Gromov invariant of the fiber class of an elliptic surface by counting $J$-holomorphic curves, rather than going via Seiberg--Witten theory.

Positive paths in the linear symplectic group

A positive path in the linear symplectic group $\Sp(2n)$ is a smooth path which is everywhere tangent to the positive cone. These paths are generated by negative definite (time-dependent) quadratic Hamiltonian functions on Euclidean space. A special case are autonomous positive paths, which are generated by time-independent Hamiltonians, and which all lie in the set $\Uu$ of diagonalizable matrices with eigenvalues on the unit circle. However, as was shown by Krein, the eigenvalues of a general positive path can move off the unit circle. In this paper, we extend Krein's theory: we investigate the general behavior of positive paths which do not encounter the eigenvalue 1, showing, for example, that any such path can be extended to have endpoint with all eigenvalues on the circle. We also show that in the case $2n=4$ there is a close relation between the index of a positive path and the regions of the symplectic group that such a path can cross. Our motivation for studying these paths came from a geometric squeezing problem in symplectic topology. However, they are also of interest in relation to the stability of periodic Hamiltonian systems and in the theory of geodesics in Riemannian geometry.

Smooth classification of Cartan actions of higher rank semisimple Lie groups and their lattices

Let G be a connected semisimple Lie group without compact factors whose real rank is at least 2, and let Γ\subset G be an irreducible lattice. We provide a C^\infty classification for volume-preserving Cartan actions of Γand G. Also, if G has real rank at least 3, we provide a C^\infty classification for volume-preserving, multiplicity free, trellised, Anosov actions on compact manifolds.
