Introduction to homological geometry: part II

Although this article can be read independently, it is a continuation of the introduction to integrable systems aspects of quantum cohomology given in part 1 (math.DG/0104274). In the same elementary style, i.e. assuming basic properties of quantum cohomology and concentrating on the simplest nontrivial examples, the quantum differential equations of Givental are studied in some detail. The solutions are described first as generating functions for certain Gromov-Witten invariants, then as generalizations of hypergeometric functions, as predicted by the Mirror Theorem.

Two-dimensional Finsler metrics of constant curvature

A Riemannian metric is of constant curvature if and only if it is locally projectively flat. There are infinitely many locally projectively flat Finsler metrics of constant curvature, that are special solutions to the Hilbert's Fourth Problem. In this paper, we use the technique in the paper titled "Finsler metrics with K=0 and S=0" (math.DG/0109060) to construct infinitely many Finsler metrics on the 2-sphere with constant curvature K=1 and infinitely many Finsler metrics on the 2-disk with constant curvature K = -1. These metrics are not projectively flat. So far, the classification of Finsler metrics of constant curvature has not been completely done yet. These examples are important to the classification problem.

An asymptotic dimension for metric spaces, and the 0-th Novikov-Shubin invariant

A nonnegative number d_infinity, called asymptotic dimension, is associated with any metric space. Such number detects the asymptotic properties of the space (being zero on bounded metric spaces), fulfills the properties of a dimension, and is invariant under rough isometries. It is then shown that for a class of open manifolds with bounded geometry the asymptotic dimension coincides with the 0-th Novikov-Shubin number alpha_0 defined previously (math.OA/9802015, cf. also math.DG/0110294). Thus the dimensional interpretation of alpha_0 given in the mentioned paper in the framework of noncommutative geometry is established on metrics grounds. Since the asymptotic dimension of a covering manifold coincides with the polynomial growth of its covering group, the stated equality generalises to open manifolds a result by Varopoulos.

An inequality for the h-invariant in instanton Floer theory

In math.DG/9903083 (henceforth referred to as EA) we defined an integer invariant $h(Y)$ for oriented integral homology 3-spheres $Y$ which only depends on the rational homology cobordism class of $Y$ and is additive under connected sums. In this paper we establish lower bounds for $h(Y)$ when $Y$ is the boundary of a smooth, compact, oriented 4-manifold with $b_2^+=1$. As applications, we give an upper bound for how much $h$ changes under -1 surgery on knots in terms of the slice genus of the knot, and compute $h$ for a family of Brieskorn spheres. This paper contains, in revised form, most of the material from v1 of EA that was left out in the final version of that paper. In particular, Theorem 1 of the present paper is virtually the same as Theorem 1 of v1 of EA. The proof is also essentially the same, but the exposition has been improved, with more details.

Reidemeister torsion in Floer-Novikov theory and counting pseudo-holomorphic tori, I

This is the first part of an article in two parts, which builds the foundation of a Floer-theoretic invariant, (I_F). (See math.DG/0505013 for part II). The Floer homology can be trivial in many variants of the Floer theory; it is therefore interesting to consider more refined invariants of the Floer complex. We consider one such instance--the Reidemeister torsion (τ_F) of the Floer-Novikov complex of (possibly non-hamiltonian) symplectomorphisms. (τ_F) turns out NOT to be invariant under hamiltonian isotopies, but this failure may be fixed by introducing certain ``correction term'': We define a Floer-theoretic zeta function (ζ_F), by counting perturbed pseudo-holomorphic tori in a way very similar to the genus 1 Gromov invariant. The main result of this article states that under suitable monotonicity conditions, the product (I_F:=τ_Fζ_F) is invariant under hamiltonian isotopies. In fact, (I_F) is invariant under general symplectic isotopies when the underlying symplectic manifold (M) is monotone. Because the torsion invariant we consider is not a homotopy invariant, the continuation method used in typical invariance proofs of Floer theory does not apply; instead, the detailed bifurcation analysis is worked out. This is the first time such analysis appears in the Floer theory literature in its entirety. Applications of (I_F), and the construction of (I_F) in different versions of Floer theories are discussed in sequels to this article.

Homotopy quantum field theory and the index gerbe

Given a family of Dirac operators with vanishing spectral flow we construct a thin-invariant rank-one field theory in the sense of Turner and Willerton arXiv:math.AT/0201116. Our construction of the field theory generalizes the one of the index gerbe by Lott, arXiv:math.DG/0106177, and it also complements the relation between gerbes and thin-invariant rank-one field theories studied in arXive:math.AT/0201116.

Collapsing and the Differential Form Laplacian : The Case of a Singular Limit Space

In this paper, which is a sequel to math.DG/9902111, we analyze the limit of the p-form Laplacian under a collapse with bounded sectional curvature and bounded diameter to a singular limit space. As applications, we give results about upper and lower bounds on the j-th eigenvalue of the p-form Laplacian, in terms of sectional curvature and diameter.

3-dimensional affine hypersurfaces admitting a pointwise SO(2)- or Z_3-symmetry

In (equi-)affine differential geometry, the most important algebraic invariants are the affine (Blaschke) metric h, the affine shape operator S and the difference tensor K. A hypersurface is said to admit a pointwise symmetry if at every point there exists a linear transformation preserving the affine metric, the affine shape operator and the difference tensor K. The study of submanifolds which admit pointwise isometries was initiated by Bryant (math.DG/0007128). In this paper, we consider the 3-dimensional positive definite hypersurfaces for which at each point the group of symmetries is isomorphic to either Z_3 or SO(2). We classify such hypersurfaces and show how they can be constructed starting from 2-dimensional positive definite affine spheres.

Ricci flow with surgery on three-manifolds

This is a technical paper, which is a continuation of math.DG/0211159. Here we construct Ricci flow with surgeries and verify most of the assertions, made in section 13 of that e-print; the exceptions are (1) the statement that manifolds that can collapse with local lower bound on sectional curvature are graph manifolds - this is deferred to a separate paper, since the proof has nothing to do with the Ricci flow, and (2) the claim on the lower bound for the volume of maximal horns and the smoothness of solutions from some time on, which turned out to be unjustified and, on the other hand, irrelevant for the other conclusions.

Pseudodifferential operators on manifolds with a Lie structure at infinity

Several examples of non-compact manifolds $M_0$ whose geometry at infinity is described by Lie algebras of vector fields $V \subset Γ(TM)$ (on a compactification of $M_0$ to a manifold with corners $M$) were studied by Melrose and his collaborators. In math.DG/0201202 and math.OA/0211305, the geometry of manifolds described by Lie algebras of vector fields -- baptised "manifolds with a Lie structure at infinity" there -- was studied from an axiomatic point of view. In this paper, we define and study the algebra $Ψ_{1,0,\VV}^\infty(M_0)$, which is an algebra of pseudodifferential operators canonically associated to a manifold $M_0$ with the Lie structure at infinity $V \subsetΓ(TM)$. We show that many of the properties of the usual algebra of pseudodifferential operators on a compact manifold extend to $Ψ_{1,0,V}^\infty(M_0)$. We also consider the algebra $\DiffV{*}(M_0)$ of differential operators on $M_0$ generated by $V$ and $\CI(M)$, and show that $Ψ_{1,0,V}^\infty(M_0)$ is a ``microlocalization'' of $\DiffV{*}(M_0)$. Finally, we introduce and study semi-classical and ``suspended'' versions of the algebra $Ψ_{1,0,V}^\infty(M_0)$. Our construction solves a problem posed by Melrose in his talk at the ICM in Kyoto.

Morse theory and higher torsion invariants II

Let p: M -> B be a family of compact manifolds equipped with a unitarily flat vector bundle F -> M. We generalize Igusa's higher Franz-Reidemeister torsion τ(M/B;F) to the case that the fibre-wise cohomology H^*(M/B;F) -> B carries a parallel metric. If moreover M admits a fibre-wise Morse function, we compute the difference of τ(M/B;F) and the higher analytic torsion \Cal T(M/B;F). We also generalise the examples given in math.DG/0111222 .

Finite extinction time for the solutions to the Ricci flow on certain three-manifolds

Let M be a closed oriented three-manifold, whose prime decomposition contains no aspherical factors. We show that for any initial riemannian metric on M the solution to the Ricci flow with surgery, defined in our previous paper math.DG/0303109, becomes extinct in finite time. The proof uses a version of the minimal disk argument from 1999 paper by Richard Hamilton, and a regularization of the curve shortening flow, worked out by Altschuler and Grayson.

Towards a classification of Lorentzian holonomy groups. Part II: Semisimple, non-simple weak-Berger algebras

The holonomy group of an (n+2)-dimensional simply-connected, indecomposable but non-irreducible Lorentzian manifold (M,h) is contained in the parabolic group $(\mathbb{R} \times SO(n))\ltimes \mathbb{R}^n$. The main ingredient of such a holonomy group is the SO(n)--projection $G:=pr_{SO(n)}(Hol_p(M,h))$ and one may ask whether it has to be a Riemannian holonomy group. In this paper we show that this is always the case, completing our results of the first part math.DG/0305139. We draw consequences for the existence of parallel spinors on Lorentzian manifolds.

On the Riemann-Lie algebras and Riemann-Poisson Lie groups

A Riemann-Lie algebra is a Lie algebra $\cal G$ such that its dual ${\cal G}^*$ carries a Riemannian metric compatible (in the sense introduced by th author in C. R. Acad. Paris, t. 333, Série I, (2001) 763-768) with the canonical linear Poisson sructure of ${\cal G}^*$. The notion of Riemann-Lie algebra has its origins in the study, by the author, of Riemann-Poisson manifolds (see Preprint math.DG/0206102 to appear in Differential Geometry and its Applications). In this paper, we show that, for a Lie group $G$, its Lie algebra $\cal G$ carries a structure of Riemann-Lie algebra iff $G$ carries a flat left-invariant Riemannian metric. We use this characterization to construct a huge number of Riemann-Poisson Lie groups (a Riemann-Poisson Lie group is a Poisson Lie group endowed with a left-invariant Riemannian metric compatible with the Poisson structure).

A characterization of semisimple local system by tame pure imaginary pluri-harmonic metric

Let $L$ be a local system on a smooth quasi projective variety over $\cnum$. We see that $L$ is semisimple if and only if there exists a tame pure imaginary pluri-harmonic metric on $L$. Although it is a rather minor refinement of a result of Jost and Zuo, it is significant for the study of harmonic bundles and pure twistor $D$-modules. As one of the application, we show that the semisimplicity of local systems are preserved by the pull back via a morphism of quasi projective varieties. This paper will be included as an appendix to our previous paper, ``Asymptotic behaviour of tame harmonic bundles and an application to pure twistor $D$-modules'', math.DG/0312230. Keywords: Higgs fields, harmonic bundle, semisimple local system.

Hyperkahler analogues of Kahler quotients

Let X be a Kahler manifold that is presented as a Kahler quotient of C^n by the linear action of a compact group G. We define the hyperkahler analogue M of X as a hyperkahler quotient of the cotangent bundle T^*C^n by the induced G-action. Special instances of this construction include hypertoric varieties and quiver varieties. Our aim is to provide a unified treatment of these two previously studied examples, with specific attention to the geometry and topology of the circle action on M that descends from the scalar action on the fibers of the cotangent bundle. We provide a detailed study of this action in the cases where M is a hypertoric variety or a hyperpolygon space. Most of this document consists of material from the papers math.DG/0207012, math.AG/0308218, and math.SG/0310141. Sections 2.2 and 3.5 contain previously unannounced results.

Novikov homology, twisted Alexander polynomials and Thurston cones

We continue the study of the twisted Novikov homology, introduced in our joint paper with H.Goda (arXiv:math.DG/0312374), and its generalizations. The main applications of the developed algebraic techniques are to the topology of 3-manifolds. We show in particular that the twisted Novikov homology of a 3-manifold M of zero Euler characteristic vanishes if and only if the corresponding twisted Alexander polynomial of the fundamental group of M is monic. We discuss the relations between the Thurston norm on 1-cohomology of a three-dimensional manifold and the twisted Novikov homology of this manifold.
