The Karoubi envelope and Lee's degeneration of Khovanov homology

We give a simple proof of Lee's result from [Adv. Math. 179 (2005) 554-586; arXiv:math.GT/0210213], that the dimension of the Lee variant of the Khovanov homology of a c-component link is 2^c, regardless of the number of crossings. Our method of proof is entirely local and hence we can state a Lee-type theorem for tangles as well as for knots and links. Our main tool is the "Karoubi envelope of the cobordism category", a certain enlargement of the cobordism category which is mild enough so that no information is lost yet strong enough to allow for some simplifications that are otherwise unavailable.

Period three actions on lens spaces

We show that a free period three action on a lens space is standard, i.e. the quotient is homeomorphic to a lens space. This is an extension of the result for period three actions on the three-sphere, arXiv:math.GT/0204077, by the author and J. Hyam Rubinstein.

Generalized Gauss maps and integrals for three-component links: toward higher helicities for magnetic fields and fluid flows, Part 2

We describe a new approach to triple linking invariants and integrals, aiming for a simpler, wider and more natural applicability to the search for higher order helicities of fluid flows and magnetic fields. To each three-component link in Euclidean 3-space, we associate a geometrically natural generalized Gauss map from the 3-torus to the 2-sphere, and show that the pairwise linking numbers and Milnor triple linking number that classify the link up to link homotopy correspond to the Pontryagin invariants that classify its generalized Gauss map up to homotopy. This can be viewed as a natural extension of the familiar fact that the linking number of a two-component link in 3-space is the degree of its associated Gauss map from the 2-torus to the 2-sphere. When the pairwise linking numbers are all zero, we give an integral formula for the triple linking number analogous to the Gauss integral for the pairwise linking numbers, but patterned after J.H.C. Whitehead's integral formula for the Hopf invariant. The integrand in this formula is geometrically natural in the sense that it is invariant under orientation-preserving rigid motions of 3-space, while the integral itself can be viewed as the helicity of a related vector field on the 3-torus. In the first paper of this series [math.GT 1101.3374] we did this for three-component links in the 3-sphere. Komendarczyk has applied this approach in special cases to derive a higher order helicity for magnetic fields whose ordinary helicity is zero, and to obtain from this nonzero lower bounds for the field energy.

R-covered foliations of hyperbolic 3-manifolds

We produce examples of taut foliations of hyperbolic 3-manifolds which are R-covered but not uniform --- ie the leaf space of the universal cover is R, but pairs of leaves are not contained in bounded neighborhoods of each other. This answers in the negative a conjecture of Thurston `Three-manifolds, foliations and circles I' (math.GT/9712268). We further show that these foliations can be chosen to be C^0 close to foliations by closed surfaces. Our construction underscores the importance of the existence of transverse regulating vector fields and cone fields for R-covered foliations. Finally, we discuss the effect of perturbing arbitrary R-covered foliations.

The compression theorem II: directed embeddings

This is the second of three papers about the Compression Theorem. We give proofs of Gromov's theorem on directed embeddings [M Gromov, Partial differential relations, Springer--Verlag (1986); 2.4.5 C'] and of the Normal Deformation Theorem [The compression theorem I; 4.7], arxiv:math.GT/9712235.

Toward a general theory of linking invariants

Let N_1, N_2, M be smooth manifolds with dim N_1 + dim N_2 +1 = dim M$ and let phi_i, for i=1,2, be smooth mappings of N_i to M with Im phi_1 and Im phi_2 disjoint. The classical linking number lk(phi_1,phi_2) is defined only when phi_1*[N_1] = phi_2*[N_2] = 0 in H_*(M). The affine linking invariant alk is a generalization of lk to the case where phi_1*[N_1] or phi_2*[N_2] are not zero-homologous. In arXiv:math.GT/0207219 we constructed the first examples of affine linking invariants of nonzero-homologous spheres in the spherical tangent bundle of a manifold, and showed that alk is intimately related to the causality relation of wave fronts on manifolds. In this paper we develop the general theory. The invariant alk appears to be a universal Vassiliev-Goussarov invariant of order < 2. In the case where phi_1*[N_1] and phi_2*[N_2] are 0 in homology it is a splitting of the classical linking number into a collection of independent invariants. To construct alk we introduce a new pairing mu on the bordism groups of spaces of mappings of N_1 and N_2 into M, not necessarily under the restriction dim N_1 + dim N_2 +1 = dim M. For the zero-dimensional bordism groups, mu can be related to the Hatcher-Quinn invariant. In the case N_1=N_2=S^1, it is related to the Chas-Sullivan string homology super Lie bracket, and to the Goldman Lie bracket of free loops on surfaces.

Connectivity of finite subset spaces of cell complexes

The kth finite subset space of a topological space X is the space exp_k X of non-empty subsets of X of size at most k, topologised as a quotient of X^k. Using results from our earlier paper (math.GT/0210315) on the finite subset spaces of connected graphs we show that the kth finite subset space of a connected cell complex is (k-2)-connected, and (k-1)-connected if in addition the underlying space is simply connected. We expect exp_k X to be (k+m-2)-connected if X is an m-connected cell complex, and reduce proving this to the problem of proving it for finite wedges of (m+1)-spheres. Our results complement a theorem due to Handel that for path-connected Hausdorff X the map on pi_i induced by the inclusion exp_k X --> exp_{2k+1} X is zero for all k and i.

Recipe theorems for polynomial invariants on ribbon graphs with half-edges

We provide recipe theorems for the Bollobàs and Riordan polynomial $\mathcal{R}$ defined on classes of ribbon graphs with half-edges introduced in arXiv:1310.3708[math.GT]. We also define a generalized transition polynomial $Q$ on this new category of ribbon graphs and establish a relationship between $Q$ and $\mathcal{R}$.

Gaboriau's criterion and fixed price one for locally compact groups

Let $G_1$ be a semisimple real Lie group and $G_2$ another locally compact second countable unimodular group. We prove that $G_1 \times G_2$ has fixed price one if $G_1$ has higher rank, or if $G_1$ has rank one and $G_2$ is a $p$-adic split reductive group of rank at least one. As an application we resolve a question of Gaboriau showing $SL(2,\mathbb{Q})$ has fixed price one. Inspired by the very recent work arXiv:2307.01194v1 [math.GT], we employ the method developed by the author and Miklós Abért to show that all essentially free probability measure preserving actions of groups weakly factor onto the Cox process driven by their amenable subgroups. We then show that if an amenable subgroup can be found satisfying a double recurrence property then the Cox process driven by it has cost one.

From Euler to Today: Universal Mathematical Fallibility A Large-Scale Computational Analysis of Errors in ArXiv Papers

We present the results of a large-scale computational analysis of mathematical papers from the ArXiv repository, demonstrating a comprehensive system that not only detects mathematical errors but provides complete referee reports with journal tier recommendations. Our automated analysis system processed over 37,000 papers across multiple mathematical categories, revealing significant error rates and quality distributions. Remarkably, the system identified errors in papers spanning three centuries of mathematics, including works by Leonhard Euler (1707-1783) and Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet (1805-1859), as well as contemporary Fields medalists. In Numerical Analysis (math.NA), we observed an error rate of 9.6\% (2,271 errors in 23,761 papers), while Geometric Topology (math.GT) showed 6.5\% (862 errors in 13,209 papers). Strikingly, Category Theory (math.CT) showed 0\% errors in 93 papers analyzed, with evidence suggesting these results are ``easier'' for automated analysis. Beyond error detection, the system evaluated papers for journal suitability, recommending 0.4\% for top generalist journals, 15.5\% for top field-specific journals, and categorizing the remainder across specialist venues. These findings demonstrate both the universality of mathematical error across all eras and the feasibility of automated comprehensive mathematical peer review at scale. This work demonstrates that the methodology, while applied here to mathematics, is discipline-agnostic and could be readily extended to physics, computer science, and other fields represented in the ArXiv repository.

Torus orbifolds with two fixed points

The main objects of this paper are torus orbifolds that have exactly two fixed points. We study the equivariant topological type of these orbifolds and consider when we can use the results of the paper [DKS] (arXiv:1809.03678) to compute its integral equivariant cohomology, in terms of generators and relations, coming from the corresponding orbifold torus graph.

Virtual Khovanov homology using cobordisms

We extend Bar-Natan's cobordism based categorification of the Jones polynomial to virtual links. Our topological complex allows a direct extension of the classical Khovanov complex ($h=t=0$), the variant of Lee ($h=0,t=1$) and other classical link homologies. We show that our construction allows, over rings of characteristic two, extensions with no classical analogon, e.g. Bar-Natan's $\mathbb{Z}/2$-link homology can be extended in two non-equivalent ways. Our construction is computable in the sense that one can write a computer program to perform calculations, e.g. we have written a Mathematica based program. Moreover, we give a classification of all unoriented TQFTs which can be used to define virtual link homologies from our topological construction. Furthermore, we prove that our extension is combinatorial and has semi-local properties. We use the semi-local properties to prove an application, i.e. we give a discussion of Lee's degeneration of virtual homology.

On the automorphisms group of the asymptotic pants complex of an infinite surface of genus zero

The braided Thompson group $\mathcal B$ is an asymptotic mapping class group of a sphere punctured along the standard Cantor set, endowed with a rigid structure. Inspired from the case of finite type surfaces we consider a Hatcher-Thurston cell complex whose vertices are asymptotically trivial pants decompositions. We prove that the automorphism group $\hat{\mathcal B^{\frac{1}{2}}}$ of this complex is also an asymptotic mapping class group in a weaker sense. Moreover $\hat{\mathcal B^{\frac{1}{2}}}$ is obtained by $\mathcal B$ by first adding new elements called half-twists and further completing it.

Link concordance and generalized doubling operators

We introduce a technique for showing classical knots and links are not slice. As one application we show that the iterated Bing doubles of many algebraically slice knots are not topologically slice. Some of the proofs do not use the existence of the Cheeger-Gromov bound, a deep analytical tool used by Cochran-Teichner. We define generalized doubling operators, of which Bing doubling is an instance, and prove our nontriviality results in this more general context. Our main examples are boundary links that cannot be detected in the algebraic boundary link concordance group.

Classification of the virtually cyclic subgroups of the pure braid groups of the projective plane

We classify the (finite and infinite) virtually cyclic subgroups of the pure braid groups $P_{n}(RP^2)$ of the projective plane. The maximal finite subgroups of $P_{n}(RP^2)$ are isomorphic to the quaternion group of order 8 if $n=3$, and to $\Z_{4}$ if $n\geq 4$. Further, for all $n\geq 3$, up to isomorphism, the following groups are the infinite virtually cyclic subgroups of $P_{n}(RP^2)$: $\Z$, $\Z_{2} \times \Z$ and the amalgamated product $\Z_{4} \ast_{\Z_{2}} \Z_{4}$.

Moments of a length function on the boundary of a hyperbolic manifold

In this paper we will study the statistics of the unit geodesic flow normal to the boundary of a hyperbolic manifold with non-empty totally geodesic boundary. Viewing the time it takes this flow to hit the boundary as a random variable, we derive a formula for its moments in terms of the orthospectrum. The first moment gives the average time for the normal flow acting on the boundary to again reach the boundary, which we connect to Bridgeman's identity (in the surface case), and the zeroth moment recovers Basmajian's identity. Furthermore, we are able to give explicit formulae for the first moment in the surface case as well as for manifolds of odd dimension. In dimension two, the summation terms are dilogarithms. In dimension three, we are able to find the moment generating function for this length function.

Hyperbolicité du graphe des rayons et quasi-morphismes sur un gros groupe modulaire

The mapping class group $Γ$ of the complement of a Cantor set in the plane arises naturally in dynamics. We show that the ray graph, which is the analog of the complex of curves for this surface of infinite type, has infinite diameter and is hyperbolic. We use the action of $Γ$ on this graph to find an explicit non trivial quasimorphism on $Γ$ and to show that this group has infinite dimensional second bounded cohomology. Finally we give an example of a hyperbolic element of $Γ$ with vanishing stable commutator length. This carries out a program proposed by Danny Calegari.
