Weyl-Cartan-Weitzenböck gravity through Lagrange multiplier

We consider an extension of the Weyl-Cartan-Weitzenböck (WCW) and teleparallel gravity, in which the Weitzenböck condition of the exact cancellation of curvature and torsion in a Weyl-Cartan geometry is inserted into the gravitational action via a Lagrange multiplier. In the standard metric formulation of the WCW model, the flatness of the space-time is removed by imposing the Weitzenböck condition in the Weyl-Cartan geometry, where the dynamical variables are the space-time metric, the Weyl vector and the torsion tensor, respectively. However, once the Weitzenböck condition is imposed on the Weyl-Cartan space-time, the metric is not dynamical, and the gravitational dynamics and evolution is completely determined by the torsion tensor. We show how to resolve this difficulty, and generalize the WCW model, by imposing the Weitzenböck condition on the action of the gravitational field through a Lagrange multiplier. The gravitational field equations are obtained from the variational principle, and they explicitly depend on the Lagrange multiplier. As a particular model we consider the case of the Riemann-Cartan space-times with zero non-metricity, which mimics the teleparallel theory of gravity. The Newtonian limit of the model is investigated, and a generalized Poisson equation is obtained, with the weak field gravitational potential explicitly depending on the Lagrange multiplier and on the Weyl vector. The cosmological implications of the theory are also studied, and three classes of exact cosmological models are considered.

Geodesic motion in the space-time of a non-compact boson star

We study the geodesic motion of test particles in the space-time of non-compact boson stars. These objects are made of a self-interacting scalar field and -- depending on the scalar field's mass -- can be as dense as neutron stars or even black holes. In contrast to the former these objects do not contain a well-defined surface, while in contrast to the latter the space-time of boson stars is globally regular, can -- however -- only be given numerically. Hence, the geodesic equation also has to be studied numerically. We discuss the possible orbits for massive and massless test particles and classify them according to the particle's energy and angular momentum. The space-time of a boson star approaches the Schwarzschild space-time asymptotically, however deviates strongly from it close to the center of the star. As a consequence, we find additional bound orbits of massive test particles close to the center of the star that are not present in the Schwarzschild case. Our results can be used to make predictions about extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) and we hence compare our results to recent observational data of the stars orbiting Sagittarius A* - the radiosource at the center of our own galaxy.

Structure of neutron, quark and exotic stars in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity

We consider the structure and physical properties of specific classes of neutron, quark and "exoti"' stars in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld (EiBI) gravity. The latter reduces to standard general relativity in vacuum, but presents a different behavior of the gravitational field in the presence of matter. The equilibrium equations for a spherically symmetric configuration (mass continuity and Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff) are derived, and their solutions are obtained numerically for different equations of state of neutron and quark matter. More specifically, stellar models, described by the stiff fluid, radiation-like, polytropic and the bag model quark equations of state are explicitly constructed in both general relativity and EiBI gravity, thus allowing a comparison between the predictions of these two gravitational models. As a general result it turns out that for all the considered equations of state, EiBI gravity stars are more massive than their general relativistic counterparts. Furthermore, an exact solution of the spherically symmetric field equations in EiBI gravity, describing an "exotic" star, with decreasing pressure but increasing energy density, is also obtained. As a possible astrophysical application of the obtained results we suggest that stellar mass black holes, with masses in the range of $3.8M_{\odot}$ and $6M_{\odot}$, respectively, could be in fact EiBI neutron or quark stars.

Dynamical Black Holes in 2+1 Dimensions

We investigate the global structure of a recently discovered simple exact, non-stationary solution of topologically massive and new massive gravity with the asymptotic charges of an undeformed BTZ black hole. We establish the existence of a timelike singularity in the causal structure of the spacetime even in the absence of angular momentum. The dynamical trapping and event horizons are determined and we investigate the evolution of the outer horizon showing that it may increase or decrease with time, depending on the value of the mass parameter. Finally, we test two proposals for dynamical entropy on this solution, one of them depending on the Kodama vector. In addition we show that the Kodama vector leads to the correct entropy for all stationary black holes in 2+1 dimensions.

What wormhole is traversable?: A case of a wormhole supported by a spherical thin shell

We analytically explore the effect of falling matter on a spherically symmetric wormhole supported by a spherical shell composed of exotic matter located at its throat. The falling matter is assumed to be also a thin spherical shell concentric with the shell supporting the wormhole, and its self-gravity is completely taken into account. We treat these spherical thin shells by Israel's formalism of metric junction. When the falling spherical shell goes through the wormhole, it necessarily collides with the shell supporting the wormhole. To treat this collision, we assume the interaction between these shells is only gravity. We show the conditions on the parameters that characterize this model in which the wormhole persists after the spherical shell goes through it.

The Shared Causal Pasts and Futures of Cosmological Events

We derive criteria for whether two cosmological events can have a shared causal past or a shared causal future, assuming a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe with best-fit ΛCDM cosmological parameters from the Planck satellite. We further derive criteria for whether either cosmic event could have been in past causal contact with our own worldline since the time of the hot "big bang", which we take to be the end of early-universe inflation. We find that pairs of objects such as quasars on opposite sides of the sky with redshifts z >= 3.65 have no shared causal past with each other or with our past worldline. More complicated constraints apply if the objects are at different redshifts from each other or appear at some relative angle less than 180 degrees, as seen from Earth. We present examples of observed quasar pairs that satisfy all, some, or none of the criteria for past causal independence. Given dark energy and the recent accelerated expansion, our observable universe has a finite conformal lifetime, and hence a cosmic event horizon at current redshift z = 1.87. We thus constrain whether pairs of cosmic events can signal each other's worldlines before the end of time. Lastly, we generalize the criteria for shared past and future causal domains for FLRW universes with nonzero spatial curvature.

Matter effects on binary neutron star waveforms

Using an extended set of equations of state and a multiple-group multiple-code collaborative effort to generate waveforms, we improve numerical-relativity-based data-analysis estimates of the measurability of matter effects in neutron-star binaries. We vary two parameters of a parameterized piecewise-polytropic equation of state (EOS) to analyze the measurability of EOS properties, via a parameter Λ that characterizes the quadrupole deformability of an isolated neutron star. We find that, to within the accuracy of the simulations, the departure of the waveform from point-particle (or spinless double black-hole binary) inspiral increases monotonically with Λ, and changes in the EOS that did not change Λ are not measurable. We estimate with two methods the minimal and expected measurability of Λ in second- and third- generation gravitational-wave detectors. The first estimate, using numerical waveforms alone, shows two EOS which vary in radius by 1.3km are distinguishable in mergers at 100Mpc. The second estimate relies on the construction of hybrid waveforms by matching to post-Newtonian inspiral, and estimates that the same EOS are distinguishable in mergers at 300Mpc. We calculate systematic errors arising from numerical uncertainties and hybrid construction, and we estimate the frequency at which such effects would interfere with template-based searches.

Quasinormal modes of nearly extremal Kerr spacetimes: spectrum bifurcation and power-law ringdown

We provide an in-depth investigation of quasinormal-mode oscillations of Kerr black holes with nearly extremal angular momenta. We first discuss in greater detail the two distinct types of quasinormal mode frequencies presented in a recent paper (arXiv:1212.3271). One set of modes, that we call "zero-damping modes", has vanishing imaginary part in the extremal limit, and exists for all corotating perturbations (i.e., modes with azimuthal index m being nonnegative). The other set (the "damped modes") retains a finite decay rate even for extremal Kerr black holes, and exists only for a subset of corotating modes. As the angular momentum approaches its extremal value, the frequency spectrum bifurcates into these two distinct branches when both types of modes are present. We discuss the physical reason for the mode branching by developing and using a bound-state formulation for the perturbations of generic Kerr black holes. We also numerically explore the specific case of the fundamental l=2 modes, which have the greatest astrophysical interest. Using the results of these investigations, we compute the quasinormal mode response of a nearly extremal Kerr black hole to perturbations. We show that many superimposed overtones result in a slow power-law decay of the quasinormal ringing at early times, which later gives way to exponential decay. This exceptional early-time power-law decay implies that the ringdown phase is long-lived for black holes with large angular momentum, which could provide a promising strong source for gravitational-wave detectors.

Semiclassical Analysis of Spinfoam Model with a Small Barbero-Immirzi Parameter

We study the semiclassical behavior of Lorentzian Engle-Pereira-Rovelli-Livine (EPRL) spinfoam model, by taking into account of the sum over spins in the large spin regime. The large spin parameter λand small Barbero-Immirzi parameter γare treated as two independent parameters for the asymptotic expansion of spinfoam state-sum (such an idea was firstly pointed out in arXiv:1105.0216). Interestingly, there are two different spin regimes: 1<<γ^{-1}<<λ<<γ^{-2} and λ>γ^{-2}. The model in two spin regimes has dramatically different number of effective degrees of freedom. In 1<<γ^{-1}<<λ<<γ^{-2}, the model produces in the leading order a functional integration of Regge action, which gives the discrete Einstein equation for the leading contribution. There is no restriction of Lorentzian deficit angle in this regime. In the other regime λ>γ^{-2}, only small deficit angle is allowed |Θ_f|<<γ^{-1}λ^{1/2}$ mod 4πZ. When spins go even larger, only zero deficit angle mod 4πZ is allowed asymptotically. In the transition of the two regimes, only the configurations with small deficit angle can contribute, which means one need a large triangulation in order to have oscillatory behavior of the spinfoam amplitude.

Gravitational wave asteroseismology of fast rotating neutron stars with realistic equations of state

In the present paper we study the oscillations of fast rotating neutron stars with realistic equations of state (EoS) within the Cowling approximation. We derive improved empirical relations for gravitational wave asteroseismology with f-modes and for the first time we consider not only quadrupolar oscillations but also modes with higher spherical order (l=|m|=3,4). After performing a systematic comparison with polytropic EoS, it is shown that the empirical relations found in this case approximately also hold for realistic EoS. Even more, we show that these relations will not change significantly even if the Cowling approximation is dropped and the full general relativistic case is considered, although the normalization used here(frequencies and damping times in the nonrotating limit) could differ considerably. We also address the inverse problem, i.e. we investigate in detail what kind of observational data is required in order to determine characteristical neutron star parameters. It is shown that masses, radii and rotation rates can be estimated quite accurately using the derived asteroseismology relations. We also compute the instability window for certain models, i.e. the limiting curve in a T-Ω-plane where the secular Chandrasekhar-Friedman-Schutz(CFS) instability overcomes dissipative effects, and show that some of the modern realistic EoS will lead to a larger instability window compared to all of the polytropic ones presented so far in the literature. Additionally, we calculate the r-mode instability window and compare it with the f-mode-case. The overall results for the instability window suggest that it is vital to take into account oscillations with l=3,4 when considering gravitational wave asteroseismology using the f-mode in rapidly rotating neutron stars, as these modes can become CFS unstable for a much larger range of parameters than pure quadrupolar oscillations.

Note on black hole no hair theorems for massive forms and spin-1/2 fields

We give a proof of the non-perturbative no hair theorems for a massive 2-form field with 3-form field strength for general stationary axisymmetric and static (anti)-de Sitter or asymptotically flat black hole spacetimes with some suitable geometrical properties. The generalization of this result for higher form fields is discussed. Next, we discuss the perturbative no hair theorems for massive spin-1/2 fields for general static backgrounds with electric or magnetic charge. Some generalization of this result for stationary axisymmetric spacetimes are also discussed. All calculations are done in arbitrary spacetime dimensions.

The Layzer-Irvine Equation for Scalar-Tensor Theories: A Test of Modified Gravity N-body Simulations

The Layzer-Irvine equation describes energy conservation for a pressure less fluid interacting though quasi-Newtonian gravity in an expanding Universe. We here derive a Layzer-Irvine equation for scalar field theories where the scalar field is coupled to the matter fields, and show applications of this equation by applying it to N-body simulations of modified gravity theories. There it can be used as both a dynamical test of the accuracy of the solution and the numerical implementation when solving the equation of motion. We also present an equation that can be used as a new static test for an arbitrary matter distribution. This allows us to test the N- body scalar field solver using a matter distribution which resembles what we actually encounter in numerical simulations.

Scalar particle in general inertial and gravitational fields and conformal invariance revisited

The new manifestation of conformal invariance for a massless scalar particle in a Riemannian spacetime of general relativity is found. Conformal transformations conserve the Hamiltonian and wave function in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation. Similarity of manifestations of conformal invariance for massless scalar and Dirac particles is proved. New exact Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonians are derived for both massive and massless scalar particles in a general static spacetime and in a frame rotating in the Kerr field approximated by a spatially isotropic metric. The latter case covers an observer on the ground of the Earth or on a satellite and takes into account the Lense-Thirring effect. High-precision formulas are obtained for an arbitrary spacetime metric. General quantum-mechanical equations of motion are derived. Their classical limit coincides with corresponding classical equations.

Fully renormalized stress tensor correlator in flat space

We present a general procedure to renormalize the stress tensor two-point correlation function on a Minkowski background in position space. The method is shown in detail for the case of a free massive scalar field in the standard Minkowski vacuum state, and explicit expressions are given for the counterterms and finite parts, which are in full accordance with earlier results for the massless case. For the general case in position space, only regularized --- but not renormalized --- results have been obtained previously. After a Fourier transformation to momentum space, we also check agreement with a previous calculation there. We generalize our results to general Hadamard states. Furthermore, the proposed procedure can presumably be generalized to the important case of an inflationary spacetime background, where the transition to momentum space is in general not possible.

Parameter space metric for 3.5 post-Newtonian gravitational-waves from compact binary inspirals

We derive the metric on the parameter space of 3.5 post-Newtonian (3.5PN) stationary phase compact binary inspiral waveforms for a single detector, neglecting spin, eccentricity, and finite-body effects. We demonstrate that this leads to better template placement than the current practice of using the 2PN metric to place 3.5PN templates: The recovered event rate is improved by about 10% at a cost of nearly doubling the number of templates. The cross-correlations between mass parameters are also more accurate, which will result in better coincidence tests.

Rapid growth of superradiant instabilities for charged black holes in a cavity

Confined scalar fields, either by a mass term or by a mirror-like boundary condition, have unstable modes in the background of a Kerr black hole. Assuming a time dependence as $e^{-iωt}$, the growth time-scale of these unstable modes is set by the inverse of the (positive) imaginary part of the frequency, Im$(ω)$, which reaches a maximum value of the order of Im$(ω)M\sim 10^{-5}$, attained for a mirror-like boundary condition, where $M$ is the black hole mass. In this paper we study the minimally coupled Klein-Gordon equation for a charged scalar field in the background of a Reissner-Nordström black hole and show that the unstable modes, due to a mirror-like boundary condition, can grow several orders of magnitude faster than in the rotating case: we have obtained modes with up to Im$(ω)M\sim 0.07$. We provide an understanding, based on an analytic approximation, to why the instability in the charged case has a smaller timescale than in the rotating case. This faster growth, together with the spherical symmetry, makes the charged case a promising model for studies of the fully non-linear development of superradiant instabilities.

Accurate weak lensing of standard candles. I. Flexible cosmological fits

With the availability of thousands of type Ia supernovae in the near future the magnitude scatter induced by lensing will become a major issue as it affects parameter estimation. Current N-body simulations are too time consuming to be integrated in the likelihood analyses used for estimating the cosmological parameters. In this paper we show that in the weak lensing regime a statistical numerical approximation produces accurate results orders of magnitude faster. We write down simple fits to the second, third and fourth central moments of the lensing magnification probability distribution as a function of redshift, of the power spectrum normalization and of the present-day matter density. We also improve upon existing models of lensing variance and show that a shifted lognormal distribution fits well the numerical one. These fits can be easily employed in cosmological likelihood analyses. Moreover, our theoretical predictions make it possible to invert the problem and begin using supernovae lensing to constrain the cosmological parameters.

Chameleon dark matter stars

We consider static, spherically symmetric equilibrium configurations consisting of fermionic dark matter nonminimally coupled to dark energy in the form of a quintessence scalar field. With the scalar field coupling function, the form of which is taken to meet cosmological observations, we estimate the effect of such a nonminimal coupling on the properties of dark matter compact configurations. We show that the masses and sizes of the resulting chameleon dark matter stars are smaller than those of systems with no field present.
