Complex Periodic Orbits and Tunnelling in Chaotic Potentials

We derive a trace formula for the splitting-weighted density of states suitable for chaotic potentials with isolated symmetric wells. This formula is based on complex orbits which tunnel through classically forbidden barriers. The theory is applicable whenever the tunnelling is dominated by isolated orbits, a situation which applies to chaotic systems but also to certain near-integrable ones. It is used to analyse a specific two-dimensional potential with chaotic dynamics. Mean behaviour of the splittings is predicted by an orbit with imaginary action. Oscillations around this mean are obtained from a collection of related orbits whose actions have nonzero real part.

Developed turbulence: From full simulations to full mode reductions

Developed Navier-Stokes turbulence is simulated with varying wavevector mode reductions. The flatness and the skewness of the velocity derivative depend on the degree of mode reduction. They show a crossover towards the value of the full numerical simulation when the viscous subrange starts to be resolved. The intermittency corrections of the scaling exponents of the pth order velocity structure functions seem to depend mainly on the proper resolution of the inertial subrange. Universal scaling properties (i.e., independent of the degree of mode reduction) are found for the relative scaling exponents rho which were recently defined by Benzi et al.

Exponential Divergence and Long Time Relaxation in Chaotic Quantum Dynamics

Phase space representations of the dynamics of the quantal and classical cat map are used to explore quantum--classical correspondence in a K-system: as $\hbar \to 0$, the classical chaotic behavior is shown to emerge smoothly and exactly. The quantum dynamics near the classical limit displays both exponential separation of adjacent distributions and long time relaxation, two characteristic features of classical chaotic motion.

Improved surrogate data for nonlinearity tests

Current tests for nonlinearity compare a time series to the null hypothesis of a Gaussian linear stochastic process. For this restricted null assumption, random surrogates can be constructed which are constrained by the linear properties of the data. We propose a more general null hypothesis allowing for nonlinear rescalings of a Gaussian linear process. We show that such rescalings cannot be accounted for by a simple amplitude adjustment of the surrogates which leads to spurious detection of nonlinearity. An iterative algorithm is proposed to make appropriate surrogates which have the same autocorrelations as the data and the same probability distribution.

Rayleigh-Ritz Calculation of Effective Potential Far From Equilibrium

We demonstrate the utility of a Rayleigh-Ritz scheme recently proposed to compute the nonequilibrium effective potential nonperturbatively in a strong noise regime far from equilibrium. A simple Kramers model of an ionic conductor is used to illustrate the efficiency of the method.

Karhunen-Lo`eve Decomposition of Extensive Chaos

We show that the number of KLD (Karhunen-Lo`eve decomposition) modes D_KLD(f) needed to capture a fraction f of the total variance of an extensively chaotic state scales extensively with subsystem volume V. This allows a correlation length xi_KLD(f) to be defined that is easily calculated from spatially localized data. We show that xi_KLD(f) has a parametric dependence similar to that of the dimension correlation length and demonstrate that this length can be used to characterize high-dimensional inhomogeneous spatiotemporal chaos.

Chaotic hysteresis in an adiabatically oscillating double well

We consider the motion of a damped particle in a potential oscillating slowly between a simple and a double well. The system displays hysteresis effects which can be of periodic or chaotic type. We explain this behaviour by computing an analytic expression of a Poincar'e map.

Vortex Dynamics in Dissipative Systems

We derive the exact equation of motion for a vortex in two- and three- dimensional non-relativistic systems governed by the Ginzburg-Landau equation with complex coefficients. The velocity is given in terms of local gradients of the magnitude and phase of the complex field and is exact also for arbitrarily small inter-vortex distances. The results for vortices in a superfluid or a superconductor are recovered.

The spectral form factor is not self-averaging

The spectral form factor, k(t), is the Fourier transform of the two level correlation function C(x), which is the averaged probability for finding two energy levels spaced x mean level spacings apart. The average is over a piece of the spectrum of width W in the neighborhood of energy E0. An additional ensemble average is traditionally carried out, as in random matrix theory. Recently a theoretical calculation of k(t) for a single system, with an energy average only, found interesting nonuniversal semiclassical effects at times t approximately unity in units of {Planck's constant) /(mean level spacing). This is of great interest if k(t) is self-averaging, i.e, if the properties of a typical member of the ensemble are the same as the ensemble average properties. We here argue that this is not always the case, and that for many important systems an ensemble average is essential to see detailed properties of k(t). In other systems, notably the Riemann zeta function, it is likely possible to see the properties by an analysis of the spectrum.

Quantum Dissipation versus Classical Dissipation for Generalized Brownian Motion

We try to clarify what are the genuine quantal effects that are associated with generalized Brownian Motion (BM). All the quantal effects that are associated with the Zwanzig-Feynman-Vernon-Caldeira-Leggett model are (formally) a solution of the classical Langevin equation. Non-stochastic, genuine quantum mechanical effects, are found for a model that takes into account either the disordered or the chaotic nature of some environment.

Stochastic Resonance in Chaotic Spin-Wave Dynamics

We report the first experimental observation of noise-free stochastic resonance by utilizing the intrinsic chaotic dynamics of the system. To this end we have investigated the effect of an external periodic modulation on intermittent signals observed by high power ferromagnetic resonance in yttrium iron garnet spheres. Both the signal-to-noise ratio and the residence time distributions show the characteristic features of stochastic resonance. The phenomena can be explained by means of a one-dimensional intermittent map. We present analytical results as well as computer simulations.

Quantum chaotic attractor in a dissipative system

A dissipative quantum system is treated here by coupling it with a heat bath of harmonic oscillators. Through quantum Langevin equations and Ehrenfest's theorem, we establish explicitly the quantum Duffing equations with a double-well potential chosen. A quantum noise term appears the only driving force in dynamics. Numerical studies show that the chaotic attractor exists in this system while chaos is certainly forbidden in the classical counterpart.

Novel universal correlations in invariant random-matrix models

We show that eigenvalue correlations in unitary-invariant ensembles of large random matrices adhere to novel universal laws that only depend on a multicriticality of the bulk density of states near the soft edge of the spectrum. Our consideration is based on the previously unknown observation that genuine density of states and n-point correlation function are completely determined by the Dyson's density analytically continued onto the whole real axis.

Diffusion in normal and critical transient chaos

In this paper we investigate deterministic diffusion in systems which are spatially extended in certain directions but are restricted in size and open in other directions, consequently particles can escape. We introduce besides the diffusion coefficient D on the chaotic repeller a coefficient ${\hat D}$ which measures the broadening of the distribution of trajectories during the transient chaotic motion. Both coefficients are explicitly computed for one-dimensional models, and they are found to be different in most cases. We show furthermore that a jump develops in both of the coefficients for most of the initial distributions when we approach the critical borderline where the escape rate equals the Liapunov exponent of a periodic orbit.

Coupled Map Modeling for Cloud Dynamics

A coupled map model for cloud dynamics is proposed, which consists of the successive operations of the physical processes; buoyancy, diffusion, viscosity, adiabatic expansion, fall of a droplet by gravity, descent flow dragged by the falling droplet, and advection. Through extensive simulations, the phases corresponding to stratus, cumulus, stratocumulus and cumulonimbus are found, with the change of the ground temperature and the moisture of the air. They are characterized by order parameters such as the cluster number, perimeter-to-area ratio of a cloud, and Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy.

Symmetry breaking in crossed magnetic and electric fields

We present the first observations of cylindrical symmetry breaking in highly excited diamagnetic hydrogen with a small crossed electric field, and we give a semiclassical interpretation of this effect. As the small perpendicular electric field is added, the recurrence strengths of closed orbits decrease smoothly to a minimum, and revive again. This phenomenon, caused by interference among the electron waves that return to the nucleus, can be computed from the azimuthal dependence of the classical closed orbits.

Quantum mechanical time-delay matrix in chaotic scattering

We calculate the probability distribution of the matrix Q = -i \hbar S^{-1} dS/dE for a chaotic system with scattering matrix S at energy E. The eigenvalues τ_j of Q are the so-called proper delay times, introduced by E. P. Wigner and F. T. Smith to describe the time-dependence of a scattering process. The distribution of the inverse delay times turns out to be given by the Laguerre ensemble from random-matrix theory.

A Dynamical Approach to Temperature

We present a new dynamical approach for measuring the temperature of a Hamiltonian dynamical system in the micro canonical ensemble of thermodynamics. We show that under the hypothesis of ergodicity the temperature can be computed as a time-average of the functional, div(grad H/|grad H|^2), on the energy-surface. Our method not only yields an efficient computational approach for determining the temperature it also provides an intrinsic link between dynamical systems theory and the statistical mechanics of Hamiltonian systems.
