Detecting and analysing nonstationarity in a time series with nonlinear cross-predictions

We propose an informal test for stationarity in a time series which checks for the compatibility of nonlinear approximations to the dynamics made in different segments of the sequence. The segments are compared directly, rather than via statistical parameters. The approach provides detailed information about episodes with similar dynamics during the measurement period. Thus physically relevant changes in the dynamics can be followed.

Semiclassical spectra from periodic-orbit clusters in a mixed phase space

We determine semiclassical quasienergy spectra from periodic orbits for a system with a mixed phase space, the kicked top. Throughout the transition from integrability to well developed chaos the standard error incurred for the quasienergies is a small percentage of their mean spacing. Such fine accuracy does not even require the angular momentum quantum number $j\propto 1/\hbar$ to be large; it already prevails for $j=1,2,3$. To open the way towards a reliable spectrum the conventional trace formula à la Gutzwiller has to be extended by including (i) ghosts, i.e., complex predecessors of bifurcating orbits and the possibility of Stokes transitions undergone by such complex orbits and (ii) collective contributions of clusters of periodic orbits near bifurcations. Even bifurcations of codimension higher than one must be reckoned with by accounting for the clusters involved through the appropriate diffraction integrals.

Wave Dynamical Chaos in a Superconducting Three-Dimensional Sinai Billiard

Based on very accurate measurements performed on a superconducting microwave resonator shaped like a desymmetrized three-dimensional (3D) Sinai billiard, we investigate for the first time spectral properties of the vectorial Helmholtz, i.e. non-quantum wave equation for a classically totally chaotic and theoretically precisely studied system. We are thereby able to generalize some aspects of quantum chaos and present some results which are consequences of the polarization features of the electromagnetic waves.

Theoretical Model for Faraday Waves with Multiple-Frequency Forcing

A simple generalization of the Swift-Hohenberg equation is proposed as a model for the pattern-forming dynamics of a two-dimensional field with two unstable length scales. The equation is used to study the dynamics of surface waves in a fluid driven by a linear combination of two frequencies. The model exhibits steady-state solutions with two-, four-, six-, and twelve-fold symmetric patterns, similar to the periodic and quasiperiodic patterns observed in recent experiments.

Ultrametric structure of multiscale energy correlations in turbulent models

Ultrametric structure of the energy cascade process in a dynamical model of turbulence is studied. The tree model we use can be viewed as an approximated one-dimensional truncation of the wavelets resolved Navier-Stokes dynamics. Varying the tree connectiveness, the appearance of a scaling transition in the two-points moments of energy dissipation is detected, in agreement with experimental turbulent data.

Diffusion in a Random Velocity Field: Spectral Properties of a Non-Hermitian Fokker-Planck Operator

We study spectral properties of the Fokker-Planck operator that describes particles diffusing in a quenched random velocity field. This random operator is non-Hermitian and has eigenvalues occupying a finite area in the complex plane. We calculate the eigenvalue density and averaged one-particle Green's function, for weak disorder and dimension d>2. We relate our results to the time-evolution of particle density, and compare them with numerical simulations.

Semiclassical Interpretation of the Mass Asymmetry in Nuclear Fission

We give a semiclassical interpretation of the mass asymmetry in the fission of heavy nuclei. Using only a few classical periodic orbits and a cavity model for the nuclear mean field, we reproduce the onset of left-right asymmetric shapes at the fission isomer minimum and the correct topology of the deformation energy surface in the region of the outer fission barrier. We point at the correspondence of the single-particle quantum states responsible for the asymmetry with the leading classical orbits, both lying in similar equatorial planes perpendicular to the symmetry axis of the system.

Invariants for Correlations of Velocity Differences in Turbulent Fields

The phenomenology of the scaling behavior of higher order structure functions of velocity differences across a scale $R$ in turbulence should be built around the irreducible representations of the rotation symmetry group. Every irreducible representation is associated with a scalar function of $R$ which may exhibit different scaling exponents. The common practice of using moments of longitudinal and transverse fluctuations mixes different scalar functions and therefore may mix different scaling exponents. It is shown explicitly how to extract pure scaling exponents for correlations functions of arbitrary orders.

A Refined Similarity Hypothesis for Transverse Structure Functions

We argue on the basis of empirical data that Kolmogorov's refined similarity hypothesis (RSH) needs to be modified for transverse velocity increments, and propose an alternative. In this new form, transverse velocity increments bear the same relation to locally averaged enstrophy (squared vorticity) as longitudinal velocity increments bear in RSH to locally averaged dissipation. We support this hypothesis by analyzing high-resolution numerical simulation data for isotropic turbulence. RSH and its proposed modification for transverse velocity increments (RSHT) appear to represent two independent scaling groups.

Morphological Instabilities in a growing Yeast Colony: Experiment and Theory

We study the growth of colonies of the yeast Pichia membranaefaciens on agarose film. The growth conditions are controlled in a setup where nutrients are supplied through an agarose film suspended over a solution of nutrients. As the thickness of the agarose film is varied, the morphology of the front of the colony changes. The growth of the front is modeled by coupling it to a diffusive field of inhibitory metabolites. Qualitative agreement with experiments suggests that such a coupling is responsible for the observed instability of the front.

Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser--Renormalization-Group Analysis of Stability in Hamiltonian Flows

We study the stability and breakup of invariant tori in Hamiltonian flows using a combination of Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) theory and renormalization-group techniques. We implement the scheme numerically for a family of Hamiltonians quadratic in the actions to analyze the strong coupling regime. We show that the KAM iteration converges up to the critical coupling at which the torus breaks up. Adding a renormalization consisting of a rescaling of phase space and a shift of resonances allows us to determine the critical coupling with higher accuracy. We determine a nontrivial fixed point and its universality properties.

Intermittency Route to Strange Nonchaotic Attractors

Strange nonchaotic attractors (SNA) arise in quasiperiodically driven systems in the neighborhood of a saddle node bifurcation whereby a strange attractor is replaced by a periodic (torus) attractor. This transition is accompanied by Type-I intermittency. The largest nontrivial Lyapunov exponent $Λ$ is a good order-parameter for this route from chaos to SNA to periodic motion: the signature is distinctive and unlike that for other routes to SNA. In particular, $Λ$ changes sharply at the SNA to torus transition, as does the distribution of finite-time or N--step Lyapunov exponents, P(Λ_N).

Exponentially rapid decoherence of quantum chaotic systems

We use a recent result to show that the rate of loss of coherence of a quantum system increases with increasing system phase space structure and that a chaotic quantal system in the semiclassical limit decoheres exponentially with rate $2 λ_2$, where $λ_2$ is a generalized Lyapunov exponent. As a result, for example, the dephasing time for classically chaotic systems goes to infinity logarithmically with the temperature, in accord with recent experimental results.

Towards a two-fluid picture of intermittency in shell models of turbulence

Intermittency in the Gledzer-Okhitani-Yamada (GOY) model of turbulence is explained in terms of collisions of coherent soliton-like structures with a random background issuing from the desintegration of their predecessors. This two-fluid picture is substantiated by the elucidation of local dynamical mechanisms leading to anomalous growth of coherent structures, their detection in true signals involving forcing and dissipation, and an investigation of their statistics.

Burridge-Knopoff Models as Elastic Excitable Media

We construct a model of an excitable medium with elastic rather than the usual diffusive coupling. We explore the dynamics of elastic excitable media, which we find to be dominated by low dimensional structures, including global oscillations, period-doubled pacemakers, and propagating fronts. We suggest that examples of elastic excitable media are to be found in such diverse physical systems as Burridge-Knopoff models of frictional sliding, electronic transmission lines, and active optical waveguides.

Almost-Hermitian Random Matrices: Crossover from Wigner-Dyson to Ginibre eigenvalue statistics

By using the method of orthogonal polynomials we analyze the statistical properties of complex eigenvalues of random matrices describing a crossover from Hermitian matrices characterized by the Wigner- Dyson statistics of real eigenvalues to strongly non-Hermitian ones whose complex eigenvalues were studied by Ginibre. Two-point statistical measures (as e.g. spectral form factor, number variance and small distance behavior of the nearest neighbor distance distribution $p(s)$) are studied in more detail. In particular, we found that the latter function may exhibit unusual behavior $p(s)\propto s^{5/2}$ for some parameter values.

Asymptotics of Universal Probability of Neighboring Level Spacings at the Anderson Transition

The nearest-neighbor level spacing distribution is numerically investigated by directly diagonalizing disordered Anderson Hamiltonians for systems of sizes up to 100 x 100 x 100 lattice sites. The scaling behavior of the level statistics is examined for large spacings near the delocalization-localization transition and the correlation length exponent is found. By using high-precision calculations we conjecture a new interpolation of the critical cumulative probability, which has size-independent asymptotic form \ln I(s) \propto -s^α with α= 1.0 \pm 0.1.

Water temperature dependence of single bubble sonoluminescence

The strong dependence of the intensity of single bubble sonoluminescence (SBSL) on water temperature observed in experiment can be accounted for by the temperature dependence of the material constants of water, most essentially of the viscosity, of the argon solubility in water, and of the vapor pressure. The strong increase of light emission at low water temperatures is due to the possibility of applying higher driving pressures, caused by increased bubble stability. The presented calculations combine the Rayleigh-Plesset equation based hydrodynamical/chemical approach to SBSL and full gas dynamical calculations of the bubble's interior.
