Magnetic Breakdown in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

We consider magnetic breakdown in twisted bilayer graphene where electrons may hop between semiclassical $k$-space trajectories in different layers. These trajectories within a doubled Brillouin zone constitute a network in which an $S$-matrix at each saddle point is used to model tunneling between different layers. Matching of the semiclassical wavefunctions throughout the network determines the energy spectrum. Semiclassical orbits with energies well below that of the saddle points are Landau levels of the Dirac points in each layer. These continuously evolve into {\it both} electron-like and hole-like levels above the saddle point energy. Possible experimental signatures are discussed.

Enhancing the three-dimensional electronic structure in 1111-type iron arsenide superconductors by H-substitution

The 1111-type iron arsenide hydride CaFe1-xCoxAsH was synthesized by high-pressure solid-state reaction, and its electronic structure and superconducting properties were investigated. Bulk superconductivity was observed at x = 0.07-0.26. A maximum superconducting critical temperature Tcmax of 23 K was observed at x = 0.07. These values are in agreement with those of CaFe1-xCoxAsF. The calculated Fermi surface of CaFeAsH has a small three-dimensional 3D hole pocket around the Gamma point. This is a result of weak covalent bonding between the As 4p and H 1s orbitals. No such covalency exists in CaFeAsF, because the energy level of the F 2p orbital is sufficiently deep to inhibit overlap with the As 4p orbital. The similar superconducting properties of CaFe1-xCoxAsH and CaFe1-xCoxAsF are explained on the nesting scenario. The small 3D hole pocket of CaFe1-xCoxAsH does not significantly contribute to electron excitation. These findings encourage exploration of hydrogen-containing 1111-type iron-based materials with lower anisotropies and higher Tc applicable to superconducting wires and tapes.

Superconductivity in rubidium substituted Ba1-xRbxTi2Sb2O

We report on the synthesis and the physical properties of Ba1-xRbxTi2Sb2O (x < 0.4) by x-ray diffraction, SQUID magnetometery, resistivity and specific heat measurements. Upon hole doping by substituting Ba with Rb, we find superconductivity with a maximum Tc = 5.4 K. Simultaneously, the charge-density-wave (CDW) transition temperature is strongly reduced from T_CDW 55 K in the parent compound BaTi2Sb2O and seems to be suppressed for x > 0.2. The bulk character of the superconducting state for the optimally doped sample (x = 0.2) is confirmed by the occurrence of a well developed discontinuity in the specific heat at Tc, with \DeltaC/Tc = 22 mJ/mol K2, as well as a large Meissner-shielding fraction of approximately 40 %. The lower and the upper critical fields of the optimally doped sample (x = 0.2) are estimated to \mu0Hc1(0) = 3.8 mT and \mu0Hc2(0) = 2.3 T, respectively, indicating that these compounds are strongly type-II superconductors.

Tuning the charge-transfer energy in hole-doped cuprates

Chemical substitution, combined with strain, allows the charge-transfer energy in hole-doped cuprates to be broadly tuned. We theoretically characterize the structural and electronic properties of the family of compounds $R_2$CuO$_2$S$_2$, constructed by sulfur replacement of the apical oxygens and rare earth substitutions in the parent cuprate La$_2$CuO$_4$. Additionally, the enthalpies of formation for possible synthesis pathways are determined.

Momentum-Resolved Electronic Relaxation Dynamics in D-wave Superconductors

Motivated by recent development in time-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES) for d-wave superconductors, we analyze the non-equilibrium relaxation dynamics of the laser pulse excited sample within the scenario of two-temperature model. It is shown that the main features reported in the trARPES technique may be understood within this phenomenological picture. The momentum dependence of the excited quasiparticle density and the relaxation rate is associated with the dynamics of the nodal d-wave superconducting gap, and the fluence dependence of the relaxation rate is related to the recombination process of quasiparticles into Cooper pairs.

Fully Gapped s-wave-like Superconducting State and Electronic Structures in the Ir0.95Pd0.05Te2 Single Crystals with Strong Spin-orbital Coupling

Due to the large spin-orbital coupling in the layered 5d-transition metal chalcogenides compound, the occurrence of superconductivity in Ir2-xPdxTe2 offers a good chance to search for possible topological superconducting states in this system. We did comprehensive studies on the superconducting properties and electronic structures of single crystalline Ir0.95Pd0.05Te2 samples. The superconducting gap size, critical fields and coherence length along different directions were experimentally determined. Macroscopic bulk measurements and microscopic low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy results suggest that Ir0.95Pd0.05Te2 possesses a BCS-like s-wave state. No sign of zero bias conductance peak were found in the vortex core at 0.4K.

Origin of electronic dimers in the spin-density wave phase of Fe-based superconductors

We investigate the emergent impurity-induced states arising from point-like scatterers in the spin-density wave phase of iron-based superconductors within a microscopic five-band model. Independent of the details of the band-structure and disorder potential, it is shown how stable magnetic (pi,pi) unidirectional nematogens are formed locally by the impurities. Interestingly, these nematogens exhibit a dimer structure in the electronic density, are directed along the antiferromagnetic a-axis, and have typical lengths of order 10 lattice constants in excellent agreement with recent scanning tunnelling experiments. These electronic dimers provide a natural explanation of the dopant-induced transport anisotropy found e.g. in the 122 iron pnictides.

Rotational response of superconductors: magneto-rotational isomorphism and rotation-induced vortex lattice

The analysis of nonclassical rotational response of superfluids and superconductors was performed by Onsager (in 1949) \cite{Onsager} and London (in 1950) \cite{London} and crucially advanced by Feynman (in 1955) \cite{Feynman}. It was established that, in thermodynamic limit, neutral superfluids rotate by forming---without any threshold---a vortex lattice. In contrast, the rotation of superconductors at angular frequency ${\bf Ω}$---supported by uniform magnetic field ${\bf B}_L\propto {\bf Ω}$ due to surface currents---is of the rigid-body type (London Law). Here we show that, neglecting the centrifugal effects, the behavior of a rotating superconductor is identical to that of a superconductor placed in a uniform fictitious external magnetic filed $\tilde{\bf H}=- {\bf B}_L$. In particular, the isomorphism immediately implies the existence of two critical rotational frequencies in type-2 superconductors.

Te 5p orbitals bring three-dimensional electronic structure to two-dimensional Ir0.95Pt0.05Te2

We have studied the nature of the three-dimensional multi-band electronic structure in the twodimensional triangular lattice Ir1-xPtxTe2 (x=0.05) superconductor using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and band structure calculation. ARPES results clearly show a cylindrical (almost two-dimensional) Fermi surface around the zone center. Near the zone boundary, the cylindrical Fermi surface is truncated into several pieces in a complicated manner with strong three-dimensionality. The XPS result and the band structure calculation indicate that the strong Te 5p-Te 5p hybridization between the IrTe2 triangular lattice layers is responsible for the three-dimensionality of the Fermi surfaces and the intervening of the Fermi surfaces observed by ARPES.

Skyrmions induced by dissipationless drag in U(1)xU(1) superconductors

Rather generically, multicomponent superconductors and superfluids have intercomponent current-current interaction. We show that in superconductors with substantially strong intercomponent drag interaction, the topological defects which form in external field are characterized by a skyrmionic topological charge. We then demonstrate that they can be distinguished from ordinary vortex matter by a very characteristic magnetization process due to the dipolar nature of inter-skyrmion forces. The results provide an experimental signature to confirm or rule out the formation $p$-wave state with reduced spin stiffness in $p$-wave superconductors.

Unfolding the electronic structure of Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt$_n$As$_8$)

The platinum iron arsenides Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt$_n$As$_8$) are the first Fe based superconductors with metallic spacer layers. Furthermore they display a large variation in their critical temperatures depending on the amount of Pt in their spacer layers: $(n=3,4)$. To gain more insight into the role of the spacer layer the electronic structures of the iron arsenic platenides are represented in the momentum space of the underlying Fe sublattice using a first principles unfolding method. We find that Ca$_{10}$(FeAs)$_{10}$(Pt$_4$As$_8$), contrary to Ca$_{10}$(FeAs)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$), shows a net electron doping and a non-negligible interlayer coupling. Both effects could account for the difference in the critical temperatures.

Exploring of point-contact spectra of Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 in the normal and superconducting state

We present study of derivatives of current-voltage I(V) characteristics of point-contacts (PCs) based on Ba{1-x}Na{x}Fe2As2 (x=0.25) in the normal and superconducting state. The detailed analysis of dV/dI(V) data (also given in Appendix A) shows that the thermal regime, when temperature increases with a voltage at a rate of about 1.8 K/mV, is realized in the investigated PCs at least at high biases V above the superconducting (SC) gap Δ. In this case, specific resistivity ρ(T) in PC core is responsible for a peculiar dV/dI(V) behavior, while a pronounced asymmetry of dV/dI(V) is caused by large value of thermopower in this material. A reproducible zero-bias minima detected on dV/dI(V) at low biases in the range \pm(6--9)mV well below the SC critical temperature T_c could be connected with the manifestation of the SC gap Δ. Evaluation of these Andreev-reflection-like structures on dV/dI(V) points out to the preferred value of 2Δ/kT_c \approx 6. The expected second gap features on dV/dI(V) are hard to resolve unambiguously, likely due to impurity scattering, spatial inhomogeneity and transition to the mentioned thermal regime as the bias further increases. Suggestions are made how to separate spectroscopic features in dV/dI(V) from those caused by the thermal regime.

Tuning between singlet, triplet, and mixed pairing states in an extended Hubbard chain

We study spin-half fermions in a one-dimensional extended Hubbard chain at low filling. We identify three triplet and one singlet pairing channels in the system, which are independently tunable as a function of nearest-neighbor charge and spin interactions. In a large-size system with translational invariance, we derive gap equations for the corresponding pairing gaps and obtain a Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian with its non-trivial topology determined by the interplay of these gaps. In an open-end system with a fixed number of particles, we compute the exact many-body ground state and identify the dominant pairing revealed by the pair density matrix. Both cases show competition between the four pairing states, resulting in broad regions for each of them and relatively narrow regions for mixed-pairing states in the parameter space. Our results enable the possibility of tuning a nanowire between singlet and triplet pairing states without breaking time-reversal or SU(2) symmetry, accompanied by a change in the system's topology.

Superconducting gap with sign reversal between hole pockets in heavily hole-doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2

To gain insight into the unconventional superconductivity of Fe-pnictides with no electron pockets, we measure the thermal conductivity $κ$ and penetration depth $λ$ in the heavily hole-doped regime of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. The residual thermal conductivity $(κ/T)_{T \rightarrow 0\,{\rm K}}$ and $T$-dependence of $λ$ consistently indicate the fully gapped superconductivity at $x=0.76$ and the (line) nodal superconductivity at higher hole concentrations. The magnitudes of $\fracκ{T}\cdot T_c|_{T \rightarrow 0\,{\rm K}}$ and $\frac{dλ}{d(T/T_c)}$ at low temperatures, both of which are determined by the properties of the low-energy excitations, exhibit a highly unusual non-monotonic x-dependence. These results indicate a dramatic change of the nodal characteristics in a narrow doping range, suggesting a doping crossover of the gap function between the s-wave states with and without sign reversal between $Γ$-centered hole pockets.

Competing order in correlated electron systems made simple: Consistent fusion of functional renormalization and mean-field theory

We derive an efficient and unbiased method for computing order parameters in correlated electron systems with competing instabilities. Charge, magnetic and pairing fluctuations above the energy scale of spontaneous symmetry breaking are taken into account by a functional renormalization group flow, while the formation of order below that scale is treated in mean-field theory. The method captures fluctuation driven instabilities such as $d$-wave superconductivity. As a first application we study the competition between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in the ground state of the two-dimensional Hubbard model.

Theory of the electron relaxation in metals excited by an ultrashort optical pump

The theory of the electron relaxation in metals excited by an ultrashort optical pump is developed on the basis of the solution of the linearized kinetic equation. The kinetic equation includes both the electron-electron and the electron-phonon collision integrals. The widely used two temperature model follows from the theory as the limiting case, when the thermalization due to the electronelectron collisions is fast with respect to the electron-phonon relaxation. It is demonstrated that the energy relaxation has two consecutive processes. The first and most important step describes the emission of phonons by the photo-excited electrons. It leads to the relaxation of 90% of the energy before the electrons become thermalized among themselves. The second step describes electronphonon thermalization and may be described by the two temperature model. The second stage is difficult to observe experimentally because it involves the transfer of only a small amount of energy from electrons. Thus the theory explains why the divergence of the relaxation time at low temperatures was never observed experimentally.

Sudden reversal in the pressure dependence of Tc in the iron-based superconductor CsFe2As2: A possible link between inelastic scattering and pairing symmetry

We report a sudden reversal in the pressure dependence of Tc in the iron-based superconductor CsFe2As2, similar to that discovered recently in KFe2As2 [Tafti et al., Nat. Phys. 9, 349 (2013)]. As in KFe2As2, we observe no change in the Hall coefficient at the zero temperature limit, again ruling out a Lifshitz transition across the critical pressure Pc. We interpret the Tc reversal in the two materials as a phase transition from one pairing state to another, tuned by pressure, and investigate what parameters control this transition. Comparing samples of different residual resistivity, we find that a 6-fold increase in impurity scattering does not shift Pc. From a study of X-ray diffraction on KFe2As2 under pressure, we report the pressure dependence of lattice constants and As-Fe-As bond angle. The pressure dependence of these lattice parameters suggests that Pc should be significantly higher in CsFe2As2 than in KFe2As2, but we find on the contrary that Pc is lower in CsFe2As2. Resistivity measurements under pressure reveal a change of regime across Pc, suggesting a possible link between inelastic scattering and pairing symmetry.

Skyrmion spin texture in ferromagnetic semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures

We provide a derivation of a spin Skyrmion number classification for two-dimensional topological superconductors constructed from ferromagnetic and Rashba spin-orbit coupled semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures. We show that in the non-trivial topological phase, characterized by a non-zero Chern number, there is always a topological spin texture in the occupied bands represented by a Skyrmion number. The Skyrmion number has the advantage of being both physically intuitive and directly measurable using spin-sensitive band structure imaging techniques. In addition, we show that the Skyrmion classification can be extended to the equivalent one-dimensional topological superconductors.
