Searching for Spurious Solar and Sky Lines in the Fermi-LAT Spectrum

We search for a unified instrumental explanation of the spectral features seen near $E_γ=130$ GeV in photons collected by Fermi-LAT from the galactic center and from the Earth's limb. We report for the first time a similar feature in photons originating from the vicinity of the Sun, and examine the instrumental characteristics of this Solar feature. To test an instrumental hypothesis, we identify the range of photon incident angles where most of the peak photons are observed in these three spectral features. An examination of the spectrum of photons from the rest of the sky with this characteristic angular range reveals a hint of a spectral feature near $E_γ=130$ GeV. These results cast further doubt on the dark-matter-annihilation interpretation of the galactic center peak.

A signature-based search for delayed photons in exclusive photon plus missing transverse energy events from $p \bar{p}$ collisions with $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV

We present the first signature-based search for delayed photons using an exclusive photon plus missing transverse energy final state. Events are reconstructed in a data sample from the CDF II detector corresponding to $6.3 \text{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity from $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV proton-antiproton collisions. Candidate events are selected if they contain a photon with an arrival time in the detector larger than expected from a promptly-produced photon. The mean number of events from standard model sources predicted by the data-driven background model based on the photon timing distribution is $286 \pm 24$. A total of 322 events are observed. A $p$-value of 12% is obtained, showing consistency of the data with standard model predictions.

Silicon detector results from the first five-tower run of CDMS II

We report results of a search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with the Si detectors of the CDMS II experiment. This report describes a blind analysis of the first data taken with CDMS II's full complement of detectors in 2006-2007; results from this exposure using the Ge detectors have already been presented. We observed no candidate WIMP-scattering events in an exposure of 55.9 kg-days before analysis cuts, with an expected background of ~1.1 events. The exposure of this analysis is equivalent to 10.3 kg-days over a recoil energy range of 7-100 keV for an ideal Si detector and a WIMP mass of 10 GeV/c2. These data set an upper limit of 1.7x10-41 cm2 on the WIMP-nucleon spin-independent cross section of a 10 GeV/c2 WIMP. These data exclude parameter space for spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering that is relevant to recent searches for low-mass WIMPs.

Search for a light Higgs boson decaying to two gluons or ss-bar in the radiative decays of Y(1S)

We search for the decay Y(1S) -> gamma A0, A0 -> gg or ss-bar, where A0 is the pseudoscalar light Higgs boson predicted by the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model. We use a sample of (17.6 +- 0.3)x 10^6 Y(1S) mesons produced in the BaBar experiment via e+e- -> Y(2S) -> pi+pi-Y(1S). We see no significant signal and set 90%-confidence-level upper limits on the product branching fraction B(Y(1S) -> gamma A0) x B(A0 -> gg or ss-bar) ranging from 10^-6 to 10^-2 for A0 masses in the range 0.5 to 9.0GeV/c^2.

First Measurement of the Muon Anti-Neutrino Double-Differential Charged Current Quasi-Elastic Cross Section

The largest sample ever recorded of $\numub$ charged-current quasi-elastic (CCQE, $\numub + p \to \mup + n$) candidate events is used to produce the minimally model-dependent, flux-integrated double-differential cross section $\frac{d^{2}σ}{dT_μd\uz}$ for $\numub$ incident on mineral oil. This measurement exploits the unprecedented statistics of the MiniBooNE anti-neutrino mode sample and provides the most complete information of this process to date. Also given to facilitate historical comparisons are the flux-unfolded total cross section $σ(E_ν)$ and single-differential cross section $\frac{dσ}{d\qsq}$ on both mineral oil and on carbon by subtracting the $\numub$ CCQE events on hydrogen. The observed cross section is somewhat higher than the predicted cross section from a model assuming independently-acting nucleons in carbon with canonical form factor values. The shape of the data are also discrepant with this model. These results have implications for intra-nuclear processes and can help constrain signal and background processes for future neutrino oscillation measurements.

Measurement of charged-particle event shape variables in sqrt(s) = 7 TeV proton-proton interactions with the ATLAS detector

The measurement of charged-particle event shape variables is presented in inclusive inelastic pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The observables studied are the transverse thrust, thrust minor and transverse sphericity, each defined using the final-state charged particles' momentum components perpendicular to the beam direction. Events with at least six charged particles are selected by a minimum-bias trigger. In addition to the differential distributions, the evolution of each event shape variable as a function of the leading charged particle transverse momentum, charged particle multiplicity and summed transverse momentum is presented. Predictions from several Monte Carlo models show significant deviations from data.

Study of Exclusive B->X_u l nu Decays and Extraction of |V_{ub}| using Full Reconstruction Tagging at the Belle Experiment

We report the results of a study of the exclusive semileptonic decays B->pi0lnu, B->pi+lnu, B->rho0lnu, B->rho+lnu and B->omegalnu, where l represents an electron or a muon. The events are tagged by fully reconstructing a second B meson in the event in a hadronic decay mode. The measured branching fractions are Br(B->pi0lnu) = (0.80 +- 0.08 +- 0.04)x10^-4, Br(B->pi+lnu) = (1.49 +- 0.09 +- 0.07)x10^-4, Br(B->rho0lnu) = (1.83 +- 0.10 +- 0.10)x10^-4, Br(B->rho+lnu) = (3.22 +- 0.27 +- 0.24)x10^-4, and Br(B->omegalnu) =(1.07 +- 0.16 +- 0.07)x10^-4, where the first error is statistical and the second one is systematic. The obtained branching fractions are inclusive of soft photon emission. We also determine the branching fractions as a function of the 4-momentum transfer squared to the leptonic system q^2=(p_l+p_nu)^2, where p_l and p_nu are the lepton and neutrino 4-momenta, respectively. Using the pion modes, a recent LCSR calculation, lattice QCD results and a model-independent description of the hadronic form factor, a value of the CKM matrix element |V_{ub}| = (3.52 +- 0.29)x10^-3 is extracted. For the first time, a charmless state with invariant mass greater than 1 GeV/c^2, which might be dominated by the decay B->f2lnu, is observed. These results are obtained from a 711 1/fb data sample that contains 772 millions BB pairs, collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider.

Precision Measurements of ${\cal B}[ψ(3686) \to π^+π^- J/ψ]$ and ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to l^+l^-]$

Based on $(106.41 \pm 0.86)\times 10^{6}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the branching fractions of $ψ(3686) \to π^+π^- J/ψ$, $J/ψ\to e^+e^- $, and $J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-$ are measured. We obtain ${\cal B}[ψ(3686) \to π^+π^-J/ψ]=(34.98\pm 0.02\pm 0.45)%$, ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to e^+e^-] = (5.983 \pm 0.007 \pm 0.037)%$ and ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-] = (5.973 \pm 0.007 \pm 0.038)%$. The measurement of ${\cal B}[ψ(3686) \to π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ]$ confirms the CLEO-c measurement, and is apparently larger than the others. The measured $J/ψ$ leptonic decay branching fractions agree with previous experiments within one standard deviation. These results lead to ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to l^+l^-] = (5.978 \pm 0.005 \pm 0.040)%$ by averaging over the $e^{+}e^{-}$ and $μ^{+}μ^{-}$ channels and a ratio of ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to e^+e^-] / {\cal B}[J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-] = 1.0017 \pm 0.0017 \pm 0.0033$, which tests $e$-$μ$ universality at the four tenths of a percent level. All the measurements presented in this paper are the most precise in the world to date.

Measurement of the ZZ production cross section and search for the standard model Higgs boson in the four lepton final state in ppbar collisions

We present a measurement of Z boson pair production in ppbar collisions at 1.96 TeV with 9.6 fb-1 to 9.8fb-1 of D0 data. We examine the final states with four electrons, two electrons plus two muons, and four muons. Based on selected data, the measured cross section in the mass region M(Z/gamma*) > 30 GeV is sigma(ppbar to Z/gamma* Z/gamma*)= 1.26 ^{+0.44}_{-0.36} (stat) ^{+0.17}_{-0.15} (syst) +/- 0.08 (lumi) pb; after correcting for the expected ratio of sigma(ppbar to Z/gamma* Z/gamma*) to sigma(ppbar to ZZ), we derive a cross section for ppbar to ZZ production of 1.05 ^{+0.37}_{-0.30} (stat) ^{+0.14}_{-0.12} (syst) +/- 0.06 (lumi) pb. This result is combined with a previous result from the ZZ to two charged leptons plus two neutrinos channel resulting in a combined ppbar to ZZ cross section measurement of 1.32 ^{+0.29}_{-0.25} (stat) +/- 0.12 (syst) +/- 0.04 (lumi)} pb. These measurements are consistent with the standard model expectation of 1.43 \pm 0.10 pb. We extend this analysis to search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson between 115 and 200 GeV. At a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, we expect to set a limit of 43 times the SM expectation at 95% C.L., and set a limit of 42 times the SM expectation at 95% C.L.

Partial wave analysis of $ψ(2S) \to p \bar{p}η$

Using a sample of $1.06 \times 10^{8}$ $ψ(2S)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, the decay $ψ(2S) \to p \bar{p}η$ is studied. A partial wave analysis determines that the intermediate state N(1535) with a mass of $1524\pm5^{+10}_{-4}$ MeV/$c^2$ and a width of $130^{+27+57}_{-24-10}$ MeV/$c^2$ is dominant in the decay; the product branching fraction is determined to be $B(ψ(2S) \to N(1535)\bar{p})\times B(N(1535)\to pη)+c.c. = (5.2\pm0.3^{+3.2}_{-1.2})\times 10^{-5}$. Furthermore, the branching fraction of $ψ(2S) \to ηp \bar{p}$ is measured to be $(6.4\pm0.2\pm0.6)\times 10^{-5}$.

A Search for the Rare Decays B --> pi l+l- and B0 --> eta l+l-

We present the results of a search for the rare flavor-changing neutral-current decays B --> pi l+l- (pi=pi+/-, pi0 and l = e,mu) and B0 --> eta l+l- using a sample of e+e- --> Y(4S) BB decays decays corresponding to 428 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the BABAR detector. No significant signal is observed, and we set an upper limit on the isospin and lepton-flavor averaged branching fraction of BF(B --> pi l+l-) < 7.0 x 10^-8 and a lepton-flavor averaged upper limit of BF(B0 --> eta l+l-) < 9.2 x 10^-8, both at the 90% confidence level. We also report 90% confidence level branching fraction upper limits for the individual modes B+ --> pi+ e+e-, B0 --> pi0 e+e-, B+ --> pi+ mu+mu-, B0 --> pi0 mu+mu-, B0 --> eta e+e-, and B0 --> eta mu+mu-.

Majorana CP-violating phases in neutrino-antineutrino oscillations and other lepton-number-violating processes

If the massive neutrinos are identified to be the Majorana particles via a convincing measurement of the neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay, how to determine the Majorana CP-violating phases in the 3 x 3 lepton flavor mixing matrix U will become a desirable experimental question. The answer to this question is to explore all the possible lepton-number-violating (LNV) processes in which the Majorana phases really matter. In this paper we carry out a systematic study of CP violation in neutrino-antineutrino oscillations, whose CP-conserving parts involve six independent 0νββ-like mass terms _{αβ} and CP-violating parts are associated with nine independent Jarlskog-like parameters V^{ij}_{αβ} (for α, β= e, μ, τand i, j = 1, 2,3). With the help of current neutrino oscillation data, we analyze the sensitivities of | _{αβ}| and V^{ij}_{αβ} to the three CP-violating phases of U, and illustrate the salient features of six independent CP-violating asymmetries between ν_α\to \barν_βand \barν_α\to ν_βoscillations. As a by-product, the effects of the CP-violating phases on the LNV decays of doubly- and singly-charged Higgs bosons are reexamined by taking account of the unsuppressed value of θ_{13}. Such CP-conserving LNV processes can be complementary to the possible measurements of neutrino-antineutrino oscillations in the distant future.

Interplay between new physics in one-loop Higgs couplings and the top-quark Yukawa coupling

After the discovery of a 126 GeV state at the LHC it is imperative to establish whether this particle really is the Higgs boson of the standard model. The early measurements have not yet pinpointed any of the Higgs couplings to fermions, the Yukawa couplings of the standard model. In this paper we study the values of the top-quark-Higgs coupling, $g_{ht\bar{t}}$, that are still allowed by the one-loop couplings of the Higgs to two gluons or two photons. We first assume that both the gluon fusion production of the Higgs and its decay into two photons proceed through loops with standard model particles only, albeit with an arbitrary top-Higgs coupling. We find that the current Higgs data still allows for 20% deviations in $g_{ht\bar{t}}$ from its standard model value. We then investigate the effect of new particles contributing to the effective one-loop couplings. Specifically we consider a color octet electroweak doublet extension of the scalar sector and find that in this case $g_{ht\bar{t}}$ is allowed to deviate by 40% from its standard model value by the current data.

The weak radiative pion vertex in τ^- ->π^-ν_τl^+ l^- decays

We carry out a detailed study of the branching fractions and lepton pair invariant-mass spectrum of τ^- ->π^- ν_τl^+l^- decays (l=e,μ). In addition to the model-independent (QED) contributions, we include the structure-dependent (SD) terms, which encode information on the hadronization of QCD currents. The form factors describing the SD contributions are evaluated by supplementing Chiral Perturbation Theory with the inclusion of the lightest multiplet of spin-one resonances as active degrees of freedom. The Lagrangian couplings have been determined demanding the known QCD short-distance behaviour to the relevant Green functions and associated form factors in the limit where the number of colours goes to infinity. As a result, we predict BR(τ^- ->π^-ν_τe^+e^-)= (1.7^{+1.1}_{-0.3})x10^{-5} and BR(τ^- -> π^-ν_τμ^+μ^-) = [0.03,1.0]x10^{-5}. According to this, the first decay could be measured in the near future, which is not granted for the second one.

Probing Heavy-Light Neutrino Mixing in Left-Right Seesaw Models at the LHC

We show that in TeV-scale left-right (L-R) symmetric seesaw models, there are new dominant contributions to the collider signals of heavy Majorana neutrinos arising from the heavy-light neutrino mixing, which directly probe the seesaw matrix in a certain class of models. We propose a way to distinguish this contribution from the widely discussed one that only probes the Majorana nature of the heavy right-handed neutrinos, by analyzing some simple kinematical variables. We find that in this class of L-R seesaw models the existing LHC data already yield slightly stronger constraints on the heavy-light neutrino mixing than those derived for standard seesaw models, and the improvement will be significant as more data are collected.

$B\to DK^*_{0,2}$ Decays: PQCD analysis to determine CP violation phase angle $γ$

$B^\pm \to (D^0, \bar D^0, D_{CP})K^{*\pm}_{0,2}$ decays are helpful in determining the CP violation angle $γ$, and we analyze these decay processes within the perturbative QCD approach based on $k_T$ factorization. We found that the branching ratio of $B^-\to D^0 K^{*-}_0$ can reach the order of $10^{-4}$, due to the enhancement of nonfactorizable contributions in color-suppressed $D^0$-emission, while the branching ratio of $B^-\to \bar D^0 K^{*-}_0$ is of the order $10^{-5}$. The ratio of decay amplitudes is about 3 times larger than the one in the channel $B^\pm\to D K^\pm$. Large branching ratios provide a good opportunity to observe $ B^\pm \to D K^{*\pm}_2$ on the ongoing and forthcoming experimental facilities and consequently these channels may be of valuable avail in reducing the errors in the CP violation phase angle $γ$. We also explore the possible time-dependent CP asymmetries of $B_s$ decay into a scalar meson to determine the phase angle $γ$.

Same-Sign Dileptons from Colored Scalars in the Flavorful Top-Coloron Model

In this paper we study the phenomenology of color-octet and color-singlet scalars in the flavorful Top-Coloron model. We discuss the relevant production mechanisms at hadron colliders and the dominant decay modes, highlighting the most promising signatures for discovery, and derive bounds on the masses of the new scalars from LHC and Tevatron data. Of particular interest is the case in which color-octet scalars are pair produced and each decay to t cbar or tbar c, leading to a same-sign-dilepton final state. LHC data places a lower limit of 440 GeV on the octet mass in this scenario. The case of an octet lighter than the top, where the octet only decays into jets, has been tested by the Tevatron, which excludes the mass region from 50 to 125 GeV. The 8 TeV LHC is not yet sensitive to the observation of the color-singlet states, which are produced at rates much smaller than the octets. Nevertheless, the color-singlet pseudoscalar can be discovered at the 14 TeV LHC by analyzing the channel where it is produced from the decay of a color-octet vector boson.

Towards two-body strong decay behavior of higher $ρ$ and $ρ_3$ mesons

In this work, we systematically study the two-body strong decay of the $ρ/ρ_3$ states, which are observed and grouped into the $ρ/ρ_3$ meson family. By performing the phenomenological analysis, the underlying properties of these states are obtained and tested. What is more important is that abundant information of their two-body strong decays is predicted, which will be helpful to further and experimentally study these states.
