Electron and Phonon Thermal Waves in Semiconductors: an Application to Photothermal Effects

The electron and phonon temperature distribution function are calculated in semiconductors. We solved the coupled one-dimensional heat-diffussion equations in the linear approximation in which the physical parameters on the sample are independent of the temperature. We also consider the heat flux at the surface of the semiconductor as a boundary condition for each electron and phonon systems instead of using a fixed temperature. From this, we obtain an expression for electron and phonon temperature respectively. The characterization of the thermal waves properties is duscussed and some practical procedures for this purpose provide us information about the electron and phonon thermal parameters.

Low Temperature Viscosity in Elongated Ferrofluids

We have studied the relaxation and transport properties of a ferrofluid in an elongational flow. These properties are influenced by the bistable nature of the potential energy. Bistability comes from the irrotational character of the flow together with the symmetry of the dipoles. Additionally, the presence of a constant magnetic field destroys the symmetry of the potential energy magnetizing the system. We have shown that at a moderate temperature, compared to the height of the energy barrier, the viscosity decreases with respect to the value it would have if the potential were stable. This phenomenon is known as the 'negative viscosity' effect. Thermal motion induces jumps of the magnetic moment between the two stable states of the system leading to the aforementioned lowered dissipation effect.

Thermodynamics of Finite Quantum Systems: Application to Spin Magnetism II

We extend our study of thermodynamics of a Kubo particle to temperatures smaller than the interlevel spacing. We obtain the distribution functions of spin susceptibility and heat capacity for Poisson and Wigner-Dyson level statistics. We evaluate the line shape of the Knight shift due to spin effects both in a single particle and for the ensemble average and compare it with orbital and spin-orbit contributions.

Nonequilibrium Dynamics and Aging in the Three--Dimensional Ising Spin Glass Model

The low temperature dynamics of the three dimensional Ising spin glass in zero field with a discrete bond distribution is investigated via MC simulations. The thermoremanent magnetization is found to decay algebraically and the temperature dependent exponents agree very well with the experimentally determined values. The nonequilibrium autocorrelation function $C(t,t_w)$ shows a crossover at the waiting (or {\em aging}) time $t_w$ from algebraic {\em quasi-equilibrium} decay for times $t$$\ll$$t_w$ to another, faster algebraic decay for $t$$\gg$$t_w$ with an exponent similar to one for the remanent magnetization.

Yang-Baxter equation in spin chains with long range interactions

We consider the $ su(n) $ spin chains with long range interactions and the spin generalization of the Calogero-Sutherland models. We show that their properties derive from a transfer matrix obeying the Yang-Baxter equation. We obtain the expression of the conserved quantities and we diagonalize them.

Transitions In Spectral Statistics

We present long range statistical properties of a recently introduced unitary random matrix ensemble, whose short range correlations were found to describe a transition from Wigner to Poisson type as a function of a single parameter.

Surface crossover exponent for branched polymers in two dimensions

Transfer-matrix methods on finite-width strips with free boundary conditions are applied to lattice site animals, which provide a model for randomly branched polymers in a good solvent. By assigning a distinct fugacity to sites along the strip edges, critical properties at the special (adsorption) and ordinary transitions are assessed. The crossover exponent at the adsorption point is estimated as $ϕ= 0.505 \pm 0.015$, consistent with recent predictions that $ϕ= 1/2$ exactly for all space dimensionalities.

Surface Magnetisation and Surface Correlations in Aperiodic Ising Models

We consider the surface critical behaviour of diagonally layered Ising models on the square lattice where the inter-layer couplings follow some aperiodic sequence. The surface magnetisation is analytically evaluated from a simple formula derived by the diagonal transfer matrix method, while the surface spin-spin correlations are obtained numerically by a recursion method, based on the star-triangle transformation. The surface critical behaviour of different aperiodic Ising models are found in accordance with the corresponding relevance-irrelevance criterion. For marginal sequences the critical exponents are continuously varying with the strength of aperiodicity and generally the systems follow anisotropic scaling at the critical point.

Directed percolation near a wall

Series expansion methods are used to study directed bond percolation clusters on the square lattice whose lateral growth is restricted by a wall parallel to the growth direction. The percolation threshold $p_c$ is found to be the same as that for the bulk. However the values of the critical exponents for the percolation probability and mean cluster size are quite different from those for the bulk and are estimated by $β_1 = 0.7338 \pm 0.0001$ and $γ_1 = 1.8207 \pm 0.0004$ respectively. On the other hand the exponent $Δ_1=β_1 +γ_1$ characterising the scale of the cluster size distribution is found to be unchanged by the presence of the wall. The parallel connectedness length, which is the scale for the cluster length distribution, has an exponent which we estimate to be $ν_{1\parallel} = 1.7337 \pm 0.0004$ and is also unchanged. The exponent $τ_1$ of the mean cluster length is related to $β_1$ and $ν_{1\parallel}$ by the scaling relation $ν_{1\parallel} = β_1 + τ_1$ and using the above estimates yields $τ_1 = 1$ to within the accuracy of our results. We conjecture that this value of $τ_1$ is exact and further support for the conjecture is provided by the direct series expansion estimate $τ_1= 1.0002 \pm 0.0003$.

Macroscopic Quantum Phase Interference in Antiferromagnetic Particles

The tunnel splitting in biaxial antiferromagnetic particles is studied with a magnetic field applied along the hard anisotropy axis. We observe the oscillation of tunnel splitting as a function of the magnetic field due to the quantum phase interference of two tunneling paths of opposite windings. The oscillation is similar to the recent experimental result with Fe}$_8$\textrm{\ molecular clusters.}

Charge-Spin Separation and the Spectral Properties of Luttinger Liquids

We compute the spectral function rho(q,omega) of the one- dimensional Luttinger model. We discuss the distinct influences of charge-spin separation and of the anomalous dimensions of the fermion operators and their evolution with correlation strength. Charge-spin separation shows up in finite spectral weight at frequencies between v_sigma * q and v_rho * q where v_rho and v_sigma are the velocities of charge and spin fluctuations while spectral weight above v_rho * q and below -v_rho * q is generated by the hybridization of the Fermi surface at +/-k_F by interactions. There are nonuniversal power-law singularities at these special frequencies. We discuss the consistency of recent photoemission experiments on low-dimensional conductors with a Luttinger liquid picture which then would suggest very strong long- range interactions. It is pointed out that many-particle correlation functions in principle exhibit similar singularities but they probe different and complementary aspects of the Fermi surface interactions.

Inward and Outward Integral Equations and the KKR Method for Photons

In the case of electromagnetic waves it is necessary to distinguish between inward and outward on-shell integral equations. Both kinds of equation are derived. A correct implementation of the photonic KKR method then requires the inward equations and it follows directly from them. A derivation of the KKR method from a variational principle is also outlined. Rather surprisingly, the variational KKR method cannot be entirely written in terms of surface integrals unless permeabilities are piecewise constant. Both kinds of photonic KKR method use the standard structure constants of the electronic KKR method and hence allow for a direct numerical application. As a by-product, matching rules are obtained for derivatives of fields on different sides of the discontinuity of permeabilities. Key words: The Maxwell equations, photonic band gap calculations

Absence of charge backscattering in the nonequilibrium current of normal-superconductor structures

We study the nonequilibrium transport properties of a normal-superconductor-normal structure, focussing on the effect of adding an impurity in the superconducting region. Current conservation requires the superfluid velocity to be nonzero, causing a distortion of the quasiparticle dispersion relation within the superconductor. For weakly reflecting interfaces we find a regime of intermediate voltages in which Andreev transmission is the only permitted mechanism for quasiparticles to enter the superconductor. Impurities in the superconductor can only cause Andreev reflection of these quasiparticles and thus cannot degrade the current. At higher voltages, a state of gapless superconductivity develops which is sensitive to the presence of impurities.

Two-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnet on a plaquette lattice

We consider a simplified model of the magnetic structure of the two-dimensional compound $CaV_4O_9$ in terms of interacting square plaquettes of spins with two distinct antiferromagnetic exchange constants. We analyze the competition between two types of singlet ground states and the Neel ordered one in terms of respectively, numerical cluster expansion and nonlinear spin wave theory. The resulting phase diagram agrees well with known Quantum Monte Carlo results and suggests a first order transition between ordered and singlet ground states as a function of the exchange constants.

Broken rotation symmetry in the fractional quantum Hall system

We demonstrate that the two-dimensonal electron system in a strong perpendicular magnetic field has stable states which break rotational but not translational symmetry. The Laughlin fluid becomes unstable to these states in quantum wells whose thickness exceeds a critical value which depends on the electron density. The order parameter at 1/3 reduced density resembles that of a nematic liquid crystal, in that a residual two-fold rotation axis is present in the low symmetry phase. At filling factors 1/5 and 1/7, there are states with four- and six-fold axes, as well. We discuss the experimental detection of these phases.

Low Temperature Magnetic Properties of the Double Exchange Model

We study the {\it ferromagnetic} (FM) Kondo lattice model in the strong coupling limit (double exchange (DE) model). The DE mechanism proposed by Zener to explain ferromagnetism has unexpected properties when there is more than one itinerant electron. We find that, in general, the many-body ground state of the DE model is {\it not} globally FM ordered (except for special filled-shell cases). Also, the low energy excitations of this model are distinct from spin wave excitations in usual Heisenberg ferromagnets, which will result in unusual dynamic magnetic properties.

The Structure of Barium in the hcp Phase Under High Pressure

Recent experimental results on two hcp phases of barium under high pressure show interesting variation of the lattice parameters. They are here interpreted in terms of electronic structure calculation by using the LMTO method and generalized pseudopotential theory (GPT) with a NFE-TBB approach. In phase II the dramatic drop in c/a is an instability analogous to that in the group II metals but with the transfer of s to d electrons playing a crucial role in Ba. Meanwhile in phase V, the instability decrease a lot due to the core repulsion at very high pressure. PACS numbers: 62.50+p, 61.66Bi, 71.15.Ap, 71.15Hx, 71.15La

New Evidence for ``Confined Coherence'' in Weakly Coupled Luttinger Liquids

On the basis of a calculation of the exact interliquid hopping rate and an approximate single particle Green's function, we present new evidence for the existence of a phase of relevant but incoherent inter-Luttinger liquid transport. This phase of ``confined coherence'' occurs when the Luttinger liquid exponent alpha satisfies alpha_c<alpha<1/2. We argue that alpha_c is strictly bounded above by 1/4, and is probably substantially smaller, especially in spin-charge separated Luttinger liquids. We also discuss connections with the work of others.
