Definition of the Dirac Sea in the Presence of External Fields

It is shown that the Dirac sea can be uniquely defined for the Dirac equation with general interaction, if we impose a causality condition on the Dirac sea. We derive an explicit formula for the Dirac sea in terms of a power series in the bosonic potentials. The construction is extended to systems of Dirac seas. If the system contains chiral fermions, the causality condition yields a restriction for the bosonic potentials.

Mathematical Problems of Gauge Quantum Field Theory: A Survey on the Schwinger Model

This extended write-up of a talk gives an introductory survey of mathematical problems of the quantization of gauge systems. Using the Schwinger model as an exactly tractable but nontrivial example which exhibits general features of gauge quantum field theory, I cover the following subjects: The axiomatics of quantum field theory, formulation of quantum field theory in terms of Wightman functions, reconstruction of the state space, the local formulation of gauge theories, indefiniteness of the Wightman functions in general and in the special case of the Schwinger model, the state space of the Schwinger model, special features of the model. New results are contained in the Mathematical Appendix, where I consider in an abstract setting the Pontrjagin space structure of a special class of indefinite inner product spaces - the so called quasi-positive ones. This is motivated by the indefinite inner product space structure appearing in the above context and generalizes results of Morchio and Strocchi [J. Math. Phys. 31 (1990) 1467], and Dubin and Tarski [J. Math. Phys. 7 (1966) 574].

Analytic Continuation of Operators -- operators acting complex s-times -- Applications: from Number Theory and Group Theory to Quantum Field and String Theories

We are used to thinking of an operator acting once, twice, and so on. However, an operator acting integer times can be consistently analytic continued to an operator acting complex times. Applications: (s,r) diagrams and an extension of Fractional Calculus where commutativity of fractional derivatives is preserved, generating integrals and non-standard derivations of theorems in Number Theory, non-integer power series and breaking of Leibniz and Chain rules, pseudo-groups and symmetry deforming models in particle physics and cosmology, non-local effect in analytic continued matrix representations, particle-physics-like scatterings of zeros of analytic continued Bernoulli polynomials (physics/9705021), analytic continuation of operators in QM, QFT and Strings.

A New Approach to Functional Analysis on Graphs, the Connes-Spectral Triple and its Distance Function

Continuing previous work we develop a certain piece of functional analysis on general graphs and use it to create what Connes calls a 'spectral triple', i.e. a Hilbert space structure, a representation of a certain (function) algebra and a socalled 'Dirac operator', encoding part of the geometric/algebraic properties of the graph. We derive in particular an explicit expression for the 'Connes-distance function' and show that it is in general bounded from above by the ordinary distance on graphs (being, typically, strictly smaller(!) than the latter). We exhibit, among other things, the underlying reason for this phenomenon.

Few-Body Quantum Problem in the Boundary-Condition Model

Systems of three and four quantum particles in the boundary-condition model are considered. The Faddeev-Yakubovsky approach is applied to construct the Fredholm-type integral equations for these systems in framework of the Potential theory. The boundary-value problems are formulated for the Faddeev-Yakubovsky components of wave functions.

Implementation of Endomorphisms of the CAR Algebra

The implementation of non-surjective Bogoliubov transformations in Fock states over CAR algebras is investigated. Such a transformation is implementable by a Hilbert space of isometries if and only if the well-known Shale-Stinespring condition is met. In this case, the dimension of the implementing Hilbert space equals the square root of the Watatani index of the associated inclusion of CAR algebras, and both are determined by the Fredholm index of the corresponding one-particle operator. Explicit expressions for the implementing operators are obtained, and the connected components of the semigroup of implementable transformations are described.

Pairing and Quantum Double of Multiplier Hopf Algebras

We define and investigate pairings of multiplier Hopf algebras. It is shown that two dually paired regular multiplier Hopf ($*$-)algebras $A$ and $B$ yield a quantum double multiplier Hopf ($*$-)algebra which is again regular. Integrals on $A$ and $B$ induce an integral on the quantum double. The results generalize pairing and quantum double construction from ordinary Hopf algebras to multiplier Hopf algebras.

Topics in hidden symmetries. III

This short paper being devoted to some aspects of the inverse problem of the representation theory treats several themes, which have their origins in the researches of F.A.Berezin, D.P.Zhelobenko, V.P.Maslov and his group, in context of the author's approach to the setting free of hidden symmetries, which is based on the noncommutative geometry. Relations of the discussed topics to the general ideologies of the translator algebras in representation theory and of the dynamical symmetries or the spectrum--generating algebras in mathematical physics are pointed out. A possibility of quantum field generalizations of the constructions in terms of vertex (QFT--operator) and Zamolodchikov algebras is mentioned.

Topics in hidden symmetries. IV

This note being devoted to some aspects of the inverse problem of representation theory explicates the links between researches on the Sklyanin algebras and the author's (based on the noncommutative geometry) approach to the setting free of hidden symmetries in terms of "the quantization of constants". Namely, the Racah-Wigner algebra for the Sklyanin algebra is constructed. It may be considered as a result of the quantization of constants in the Racah-Wigner algebra for the Lie algebra $sl(2,C)$. The Racah-Wigner algebra for the Sklyanin algebra is an example of the noncommutative weighted shift operator algebras (NWSO-algebras), which generalize the mho-algebras introduced by the author earlier. If the Sklyanin algebra is interpreted as an algebra of anomalous spins then the Racah-Wigner algebra for it may be regarded as an enlargement of the Sklyanin algebra by operators of the anomalous spin-spin interaction (of tensor type).

Jones-Wassermann Subfactors for Disconnected Intervals

We show that the Jones-Wassermann subfactors for disconnected intervals, which are constructed from the representations of loop groups of type $A$, are finite-depth subfactors. The index value and the dual principal graphs of these subfactors are completely determined. The square root of the index value in the case of two disjoint intervals for vacuum representation is the same as the Quantum 3-manifold invariant of type $A$ evaluated on $S^1\times S^2$.

Relativistic Quantization and Improved Equation for a Free Relativistic Particle

Usually the only difference between relativistic quantization and standard one is that the Lagrangian of the system under consideration should be Lorentz invariant. The standard approaches are logically incomplete and produce solutions with unpleasant properties: negative-energy, superluminal propagation etc. We propose a two-projections scheme of (special) relativistic quantization. The first projection defines the quantization procedure (e.g. the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization). The second projection defines a casual structure of the relativistic system (e.g. the operator of multiplication by the characteristic function of the future cone). The two-projections quantization introduces in a natural way the existence of three types of relativistic particles (with $0$, $\frac{1}{2}$, and $1$ spins). Keywords: Quantization, relativity, spin, Dirac equation, Klein-Gordon equation, electron, Segal-Bargmann space, Berezin-Toeplitz quantization. Time of Events in Quantum Theory

We enhance elementary quantum mechanics with three simple postulates that enable us to define time observable. We discuss shortly justification of the new postulates and illustrate the concept with the detailed analysis of a delta function counter.

Point interactions in a strip

We study the behavior of a quantum particle confined to a hard--wall strip of a constant width in which there is a finite number $ N $ of point perturbations. Constructing the resolvent of the corresponding Hamiltonian by means of Krein's formula, we analyze its spectral and scattering properties. The bound state--problem is analogous to that of point interactions in the plane: since a two--dimensional point interaction is never repulsive, there are $ m $ discrete eigenvalues, $ 1\le m\le N $, the lowest of which is nondegenerate. On the other hand, due to the presence of the boundary the point interactions give rise to infinite series of resonances; if the coupling is weak they approach the thresholds of higher transverse modes. We derive also spectral and scattering properties for point perturbations in several related models: a cylindrical surface, both of a finite and infinite heigth, threaded by a magnetic flux, and a straight strip which supports a potential independent of the transverse coordinate. As for strips with an infinite number of point perturbations, we restrict ourselves to the situation when the latter are arranged periodically; we show that in distinction to the case of a point--perturbation array in the plane, the spectrum may exhibit any finite number of gaps. Finally, we study numerically conductance fluctuations in case of random point perturbations.

Singular Traces and Compact Operators. I

We give a necessary and sufficient condition on a positive compact operator $T$ for the existence of a singular trace (i.e. a trace vanishing on the finite rank operators) which takes a finite non-zero value on $T$. This generalizes previous results by Dixmier and Varga. We also give an explicit description of these traces and associated ergodic states on $\ell^\infty(\Bbb N)$ using tools of non standard analysis in an essential way.

Endomorphism Semigroups and Lightlike Translations

Borchers and Wiesbrock have demonstrated certain results concerning the one-parameter semigroups of endomorphisms of von Neumann algebras that appear as lightlike translations in the theory of algebras of local observables. These results are abstracted and analyzed as essentially operator-theoretic. Criteria are then demonstrated for a spatial derivation of a von Neumann algebra to generate a one-parameter semigroup of endomorphisms. All this is combined to establish a von Neumann-algebraic converse to the Borchers-Wiesbrock results. This analysis is then applied to questions of isotony and covariance for local algebras.

Weakly coupled states on branching graphs

We consider a Schrödinger particle on a graph consisting of $\,N\,$ links joined at a single point. Each link supports a real locally integrable potential $\,V_j\,$; the self--adjointness is ensured by the $\,δ\,$ type boundary condition at the vertex. If all the links are semiinfinite and ideally coupled, the potential decays as $\,x^{-1-ε}$ along each of them, is non--repulsive in the mean and weak enough, the corresponding Schrödinger operator has a single negative eigenvalue; we find its asymptotic behavior. We also derive a bound on the number of bound states and explain how the $\,δ\,$ coupling constant may be interpreted in terms of a family of squeezed potentials.

Boundedness and Stability of Impulsively Perturbed Systems in a Banach Space

Consider a linear impulsive equation in a Banach space $$\dot{x}(t)+A(t)x(t) = f(t), ~t \geq 0,$$ $$x(τ_i +0)= B_i x(τ_i -0) + α_i,$$ with $\lim_{i \rightarrow \infty} τ_i = \infty $. Suppose each solution of the corresponding semi-homogeneous equation $$\dot{x}(t)+A(t)x(t) = 0,$$ (2) is bounded for any bounded sequence $\{ α_i \}$. The conditions are determined ensuring (a) the solution of the corresponding homogeneous equation has an exponential estimate; (b) each solution of (1),(2) is bounded on the half-line for any bounded $f$ and bounded sequence $\{ α_i \}$ ; (c) $\lim_{t \rightarrow \infty}x(t)=0$ for any $f, α_i$ tending to zero; (d) exponential estimate of $f$ implies a similar estimate for $x$.
