Correlation Functions of Asymmetric Real Matrices

We give a closed form for the correlation functions of ensembles of asymmetric real matrices in terms of the Pfaffian of an antisymmetric matrix formed from a $2 \times 2$ matrix kernel associated to the ensemble. We also derive closed forms for the matrix kernel and correlation functions for Ginibre's real ensemble.

Singular lagrangian systems and variational constrained mechanics on Lie algebroids

The purpose of this paper is describe Lagrangian Mechanics for constrained systems on Lie algebroids, a natural framework which covers a wide range of situations (systems on Lie groups, quotients by the action of a Lie group, standard tangent bundles...). In particular, we are interested in two cases: singular Lagrangian systems and vakonomic mechanics (variational constrained mechanics). Several examples illustrate the interest of these developments.

Graded structure and Hopf structures in parabosonic algebra. An alternative approach to bosonisation

Parabosonic algebra in infinite degrees of freedom is presented as a generalization of the bosonic algebra, from the viewpoints of both physics and mathematics. The notion of super-Hopf algebra is shortly discussed and the super-Hopf algebraic structure of the parabosonic algebra is established (without appealing to its Lie superalgebraic structure). Two possible variants of the parabosonic algebra are presented and their (ordinary) Hopf algebraic structure is estabished: The first is produced by "bosonising" the original super-Hopf algebra, while the second is constructed via a slightly different path.

Representations of Truncated Current Lie Algebras

Let g denote a Lie algebra, and let T(g) denote the tensor product of g with a ring of truncated polynomials. The Lie algebra T(g) is called a truncated current Lie algebra. The highest-weight representation theory of T(g) is developed, and a reducibility criterion for the Verma modules is described.

Blow-up of Electric Fields between Closely Spaced Spherical Perfect Conductors

The electric field increases toward infinity in the narrow region between closely adjacent perfect conductors as they approach each other. Much attention has been devoted to the blow-up estimate, especially in two dimensions, for the practical relevance to high stress concentration in fiber-reinforced elastic composites. In this paper, we establish optimal estimates for the electric field associated with the distance between two spherical conductors in $n-${dimensional spaces for $n \geq 2$}. {The novelty of these estimates is that they explicitly describe the dependency of the blow-up rate on the geometric parameters: the radii of the conductors.}

Quantum decay rates in chaotic scattering

In this article we prove that for a large class of operators, including Schroedinger operators, with hyperbolic classical flows, the smallness of dimension of the trapped set implies that there is a gap between the resonances and the real axis. In other words, the quantum decay rate is bounded from below if the classical repeller is sufficiently filamentary. The higher dimensional statement is given in terms of the topological pressure. Under the same assumptions we also prove a resolvent estimate with a logarithmic loss compared to nontrapping estimates.

Variational methods in relativistic quantum mechanics

This review is devoted to the study of stationary solutions of linear and nonlinear equations from relativistic quantum mechanics, involving the Dirac operator. The solutions are found as critical points of an energy functional. Contrary to the Laplacian appearing in the equations of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, the Dirac operator has a negative continuous spectrum which is not bounded from below. This has two main consequences. First, the energy functional is strongly indefinite. Second, the Euler-Lagrange equations are linear or nonlinear eigenvalue problems with eigenvalues lying in a spectral gap (between the negative and positive continuous spectra). Moreover, since we work in the space domain R^3, the Palais-Smale condition is not satisfied. For these reasons, the problems discussed in this review pose a challenge in the Calculus of Variations. The existence proofs involve sophisticated tools from nonlinear analysis and have required new variational methods which are now applied to other problems.

Spin glasses and Stein's method

We introduce some applications of Stein's method in the high temperature analysis of spin glasses. Stein's method allows the direct analysis of the Gibbs measure without having to create a cavity. Another advantage is that it gives limit theorems with total variation error bounds, although the bounds can be suboptimal. A surprising byproduct of our analysis is a relatively transparent explanation of the Thouless-Anderson-Palmer system of equations. Along the way, we develop Stein's method for mixtures of two Gaussian densities.

Twisted noncommutative equivariant cohomology: Weil and Cartan models

We propose Weil and Cartan models for the equivariant cohomology of noncommutative spaces which carry a covariant action of Drinfel'd twisted symmetries. The construction is suggested by the noncommutative Weil algebra of Alekseev and Meinrenken; we show that one can implement a Drinfel'd twist of their models in order to take into account the noncommutativity of the spaces we are acting on.

Symmetries and Dynamics of Discrete Systems

We consider discrete dynamical systems and lattice models in statistical mechanics from the point of view of their symmetry groups. We describe a C program for symmetry analysis of discrete systems. Among other features, the program constructs and investigates phase portraits of discrete dynamical systems modulo groups of their symmetries, searches dynamical systems possessing specific properties, e.g., reversibility, computes microcanonical partition functions and searches phase transitions in mesoscopic systems. Some computational results and observations are presented. In particular, we explain formation of moving soliton-like structures similar to ``spaceships'' in cellular automata.

Finding gaps in a spectrum

We propose a method for finding gaps in the spectrum of a differential operator. When applied to the one-dimensional Hamiltonian of the quartic oscillator, a simple algebraic algorithm is proposed that, step by step, separates with a remarkable precision all the energies even for a double-well configuration in a tunnelling regime. Our strategy may be refined and generalised to a large class of 1d-problems.

The Heisenberg group and conformal field theory

A mathematical construction of the conformal field theory (CFT) associated to a compact torus, also called the "nonlinear Sigma-model" or "lattice-CFT", is given. Underlying this approach to CFT is a unitary modular functor, the construction of which follows from a "Quantization commutes with reduction"- type of theorem for unitary quantizations of the moduli spaces of holomorphic torus-bundles and actions of loop groups. This theorem in turn is a consequence of general constructions in the category of affine symplectic manifolds and their associated generalized Heisenberg groups.

Dyson's non-intersecting Brownian motions with a few outliers

Consider n non-intersecting particles on the real line (Dyson Brownian motions), all starting from the origin at time=0, and forced to return to x=0 at time=1. For large n, the average mean density of particles has its support, for each 0<t<1, within the interior of an ellipse. The Airy process is defined as the motion of these non-intersecting Brownian motions for large n, but viewed from an arbitrary point on the ellipse with an appropriate space-time rescaling. Assume now a finite number r of these particles are forced to a different target point. Does it affect the Brownian fluctuations along the ellipse for large n? In this paper, we show that no new process appears as long as one considers points on the ellipse, for which the t-coordinate is smaller than the t-coordinate of the point of tangency of the tangent to the curve passing through the target point. At this point of tangency the fluctuations obey a new statistics: the Airy process with r outliers (in short: {\bf r-Airy process}). The log of the transition probability of this new process is given by the Fredholm determinant of a new kernel (extending the Airy kernel) and it satisfies a non-linear PDE in x and the time.

On a possible interpretation of fusion in Stochastic Loewner Evolution

We suggest how to give a physical interpretation of Stochastic Loewner Evolution traces approaching a marked point in the upper half plane. We show that this may be related to the fusion of boundary with bulk fields in Conformal Field Theory by taking a look at the probability of such an event.

A generalization of MacMahon's formula

We generalize the generating formula for plane partitions known as MacMahon's formula as well as its analog for strict plane partitions. We give a 2-parameter generalization of these formulas related to Macdonald's symmetric functions. The formula is especially simple in the Hall-Littlewood case. We also give a bijective proof of the analog of MacMahon's formula for strict plane partitions.
