New examples of indefinite hyper-Kaehler symmetric spaces

Following the approach to pseudo-Riemannian symmetric spaces developed in math.DG/0408249 we exhibit examples of indefinite hyper-Kaehler symmetric spaces with non-abelian holonomy. Moreover, we classify indecomposable hyper-Kaehler symmetric spaces whose metric has signature (4,4n). Such spaces exist if and only if n=0,1,3.

Blowing up Kähler manifolds with constant scalar curvature II

In this paper we continue our study about the existence of Kaehler metrics of constant scalar curvature (Kcsc) on blow ups at points of compact manifolds with Kcsc metrics started in math.DG/0411522. In this second part we deal with the case of base manifolds with holomorphic vector fields and we give sufficient conditions for the position of points to be blown up to preserve the Kcsc property. These results are obtained by a gluing procedure. We give explicit examples of our construction, in particular getting optimal results in the cases of P^n and P^n x M, where M is a Kcsc compact manifold with discrete automorphism group.

Reidemeister Torsion in Floer-Novikov Theory and Counting Pseudo-holomorphic Tori, II

This is the second part of an article in two parts, which builds the foundation of a Floer-theoretic invariant, I_F. (See math.DG/0111313 for part I). Having constructed I_F and outlined a proof of its invariance based on bifurcation analysis in part I, in this part we prove a series of gluing theorems to confirm the bifurcation behavior predicted in part I. These gluing theorems are different from (and much harder than) the more conventional versions in that they deal with broken trajectories or broken orbits connected at degenerate rest points. The issues of orientation and signs are also settled in the last section.

Nilpotent metric Lie algebras of small dimension

In math.DG/0312243 we developed a general classification scheme for metric Lie algebras, i.e. for finite-dimensional Lie algebras equipped with a non-degenerate invariant inner product. Here we determine all nilpotent Lie algebras l with dim l'=2 which are used in this scheme. Furthermore, we classify all nilpotent metric Lie algebras of dimension at most 10.

Special Lagrangians of cohomogeneity one in the resolved conifold

In this paper, which is a natural continuation of our previous paper math.DG/0504557, we describe some special Lagrangians of cohomogeneity one in the resolved conifold. Our main result gives a foliation of the resolved conifold by T^2-invariant special Lagrangians, where the generic leaf is topologically T^2 X R. We also obtain a family of SO(3)-invariant special Lagrangians. These special Lagrangian families in both the deformed and the resolved conifold approach asymptotically the same special Lagrangian cones in the conifold.

Examples of compact minitwistor spaces and their moduli space

In a paper (math.DG/0403528) we obtained explicit examples of Moishezon twistor spaces of some compact self-dual four-manifolds admitting a non-trivial Killing field, and also determined their moduli space. In this note we investigate minitwistor spaces associated to these twistor spaces. We determine their structure, minitwistor lines and also their moduli space, by using a double covering structure of the twistor spaces. In particular, we find that these minitwistor spaces have different properties in many respects, compared to known examples of minitwistor spaces. Especially, we show that the moduli space of the minitwistor spaces is identified with the configuration space of different 4 points on a circle divided by the standard PSL(2, R)-action.

Coplanar constant mean curvature surfaces

We consider constant mean curvature surfaces of finite topology, properly embedded in three-space in the sense of Alexandrov. Such surfaces with three ends and genus zero were constructed and completely classified by the authors in arXiv:math.DG/0102183. Here we extend the arguments to the case of an arbitrary number of ends, under the assumption that the asymptotic axes of the ends lie in a common plane: we construct and classify the entire family of these genus-zero coplanar constant mean curvature surfaces.

Special metrics in $G_2$ geometry

We review a recent series of $G_2$ manifolds constructed via solvable Lie groups obtained in math.DG/0409137. They carry two related distinguished metrics, one negative Einstein and the other in the conformal class of a Ricci-flat metric.

Conformal geometry and 3-plane fields on 6-manifolds

The purpose of this note is to provide yet another example of the link between certain conformal geometries and ordinary differential equations, along the lines of the examples discussed by Nurowski in math.DG/0406400. In this particular case, I consider the equivalence problem for 3-plane fields D on 6-manifolds M that satisfy the nondegeneracy condition that D+[D,D]=TM I give a solution of the equivalence problem for such D (as Tanaka has previously), showing that it defines a so(4,3)-valued Cartan connection on a principal right H-bundle over M where H is the subgroup of SO(4,3) that stabilizes a null 3-plane in R^{4,3}. Along the way, I observe that there is associated to each such D a canonical conformal structure of split type on M, one that depends on two derivatives of the plane field D. I show how the primary curvature tensor of the Cartan connection associated to the equivalence problem for D can be interpreted as the Weyl curvature of the associated conformal structure and, moreover, show that the split conformal structures in dimension~6 that arise in this fashion are exactly the ones whose so(4,4)-valued Cartan connection admits a reduction to a spin(4,3)-connection. I also discuss how this case has features that are analogous to those of Nurowski's examples.

Coassociative K3 fibrations of compact G_2-manifolds

A class of examples of Riemannian metrics with holonomy G_2 on compact 7-manifolds was constructed by the author in arXiv:math.DG/0012189 and later in a joint work with N.-H. Lee in arXiv:0810.0957, using a certain `generalized connected sum' of two asymptotically cylindrical manifolds with holonomy SU(3). We consider, on each of the two initial SU(3)-manifolds, a fibration arising from a Lefschetz pencil of K3 surfaces. The gluing of the two K3 fibrations yields a coassociative fibration of the connected sum G_2-manifold over a 3-dimensional sphere. The singular fibres of this fibration are diffeomorphic to K3 orbifolds with ordinary double points and are parameterized by a Hopf-type link. We believe that these are the first examples of fibrations of compact manifolds of holonomy G_2 by coassociative minimal submanifolds.

Generalized Doubling Constructions for Constant Mean Curvature Hypersurfaces in the (n+1)-Sphere

The (n+1)-sphere contains a simple family of constant mean curvature (CMC) hypersurfaces which are products of lower-dimensional spheres called the generalized Clifford hypersurfaces. This paper demonstrates that new, topologically non-trivial CMC hypersurfaces resembling a pair of neighbouring generalized Clifford tori connected to each other by small catenoidal bridges at a sufficiently symmetric configuration of points can be constructed by perturbative PDE methods. That is, one can create an approximate solution by gluing a rescaled catenoid into the neighbourhood of each point; and then one can show that a perturbation of this approximate hypersurface exists which satisfies the CMC condition. The results of this paper generalize those of the authors in math.DG/0511742.

On the Discrete Spectrum of Generalized Quantum Tubes

In this paper, we study the spectrum of quantum tubes. Under certain intrinsic assumptions of the asymptotically flat submanifold of the Euclidean space, we prove the existence of the ground state of the quantum tube. The work is a generalization of Duclos, Exner and Krejcirik (CMP, 223(1), 13-28, 2001) and ourselves(math.DG/0402252).

Szego projections and new invariants for CR and contact manifolds

In this paper we give a survey of the constructions in math.DG/0510061 of several new invariants for CR and contact manifolds. The latter extend previous constructions of Hirachi and Boutet de Monvel. In addition, we give simple algebro-geometric arguments proving that Hirachi's invariant vanishes on strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds of dimension 4m+1.

On the problem of linearizability of a 3-web

In this paper we study the linearizability problem for 3-webs on a 2-dimensional manifold. With an explicit computation based on the theory developed in the paper "On the linearizability of 3-webs" (Nonlinear analysis 47, (2001) pp. 2643-2654), we examine a 3-web whose linearizability was claimed in the same paper. We show that, contrary to the statement of the papers "On the Blaschke conjecture for 3-webs" (arXiv: math.DG/0411460) and "On linearization of planar three-webs and Blaschke's conjecture", (C.R.Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I. vol. 341. num 3 (2005)), this particular web is linearizable. We compute explicitly the affine deformation tensor and the corresponding flat linear connection adapted to the web which linearizes it.

On a construction of the twistor spaces of Joyce metrics, II

We explicitly construct the twistor spaces of Joyce metrics with torus action that are not treated in Part I (math.DG/0603242). This finishes a construction of all the twistor spaces of Joyce metrics on the connected sum of four complex projective planes.

Surfaces of revolution in the Heisenberg group and the spectral generalization of the Willmore functional

We study the generalization of the Willmore functional for surfaces in the three-Heisenberg group. Its construction is based on the spectral theory of the Dirac operator coming to the Weierstrass representation of surfaces (see math.DG/0503707). By using surfaces of revolution we demonstrate that it resembles the Willmore functional for surfaces in the Euclidean space in many geometrical respects. We also observe the relation of these functionals to the isoperimetric problem.

Cosmological time versus CMC time II: the de Sitter and anti-de Sitter cases

This paper continues the investigation of constant mean curvature (CMC) time functions in maximal globally hyperbolic spatially compact spacetimes of constant sectional curvature, which was started in math.DG/0604486. In that paper, the case of flat spacetimes was considered, and in the present paper, the remaining cases of negative curvature (i.e. anti-de Sitter) spacetimes and postitive curvature (i.e. de Sitter) spacetimes is dealt with. As in the flat case, the existence of CMC time functions is obtained by using the level sets of the cosmological time function as barriers. A major part of the work consists of proving the required curvature estimates for these level sets. The nonzero curvature case presents significant new difficulties, in part due to the fact that the topological structure of nonzero constant curvature spacetimes is much richer than that of the flat spacetimes. Further, the timelike convergence condition fails for de Sitter spacetimes, and hence uniqueness for CMC hypersurfaces fails in general. We characterize those de Sitter spacetimes which admit CMC time functions (which are automatically unique), as well as those which admit CMC foliations but no CMC time function.
