Chiral Extrapolation of light resonances from Unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory

Both scalar and vector light resonances can be generated from the unitarization of one-loop chiral perturbation theory. This amounts to using in a dispersion relation the chiral expansion, which incorporates the correct QCD quark mass dependence. We can thus predict the quark mass dependence of the poles associated to those light resonances. Our results compare well with some recent lattice results for the rho(770) mass and can be used as a benchmark for future lattice results on the rho(770) or the f0(600) also known as the sigma.

Comment on "Viscous hydrodynamics relaxation time from AdS/CFT correspondence"

This is a comment to hep-th/0703243. The paper determined the relaxation time tau_pi of the shear viscous stress for the N=4 SYM from AdS/CFT correspondence. The purpose of this comment is to point out that the value of tau_pi is 3 times larger than their result if one takes into account an additional term in the hydrodynamic equation.

Atomic Cascade in Muonic and Hadronic Hydrogen Atoms

The atomic cascade in $μ^- p$ and $π^- p$ atoms has been studied with the improved version of the extended cascade model in which new quantum mechanical calculations of the differential and integral cross sections of the elastic scattering, Stark transitions and Coulomb de-excitation have been included for the principal quantum number values $n\le 8$ and the relative energies $E \ge 0.01$ eV. The $X$-ray yields and kinetic energy distributions are compared with the experimental data.

Influence of the hexadecapole deformation on the two neutrino double-$\be ta $ decay

The two neutrino double beta $(β^{-}β^{-})_{2ν}$ decay of $ ^{94,96}$Zr, $^{98,100}$Mo, $^{104}$Ru, $^{110}$Pd, $^{128,130}$Te and $^{150}$Nd nuclei for the $0^{+}\to 0^{+}$ transition is studied in the PHFB model in conjunction with the pairing plus quadrupole-quadrupole plus hexadecapole-hexadecapole effective two-body interaction and the effect of the latter is investigated on the calculation of nuclear transition matrix elements $M_{2ν}$. The reliability of the intrinsic wave functions of parent and daughter nuclei involved in the $(β^{-}β^{-})_{2ν}$ decay of above mentioned nuclei is established by obtaining an overall agreement between a number of theoretically calculated spectroscopic properties, namely the yrast spectra, reduced $B(E2$:$0^{+}\to 2^{+})$ transition probabilities, static quadrupole moments $Q(2^{+})$ and $g$-factors $g(2^{+})$ and the available experimental data. The effect of deformation on $M_{2ν}$ is also investigated to inveterate its inverse relation with nuclear deformation.

A Small Parameter Method for Few-Body Problems

A procedure to solve few-body problems which is based on an expansion over a small parameter is developed. The parameter is the ratio of potential energy to kinetic energy in the subspace of states having not small hyperspherical quantum numbers, K>K_0. Dynamic equations are reduced perturbatively to those in the finite subspace with K \le K_0. The contribution from the subspace with K>K_0 is taken into account in a closed form, i.e. without an expansion over basis functions.

Kaon HBT radii from perfect fluid dynamics using the Buda-Lund model

In this paper we summarize the ellipsoidally symmetric Buda-Lund model's results on HBT radii. We calculate the Bose-Einstein correlation function from the model and derive formulas for the transverse momentum dependence of the correlation radii in the Bertsch-Pratt system of out, side and longitudinal directions. We show a comparison to $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200 GeV$ RHIC PHENIX two-pion correlation data and make prediction on the same observable for different particles.

An analytic study of the tricritical line in the U(Nf)xU(Nf) sigma model

The tricritical line of the first-order chiral phase transition is investigated in the U(Nf)xU(Nf) sigma model by means of the ring improved one-loop finite temperature effective potential. To locate the tricritical line in the space of the coupling constants, we expand the effective potential up to third order in the high temperature expansion, and up to sixth order in the order parameter expansion. In this approximation, the tricritical line can be evaluated to the lowest order of the coupling constants and it follows an analytic relation between the tree-level masses of the scalar bosons. The validity of the high temperature expansion, the order parameter expansion, and the ring improved perturbation is critically examined. This result does not alter if one includes the massless fermions with the small Yukawa couplings.

Whither Nuclear Physics ?

Nuclear Physics has had its ups and downs. However in recent years, bucked up by some new and often puzzling data, it has become a potentially very rich field. We review some of these exciting developments in a few important sectors of nuclear physics. Emphasis shall be on the study of exotic nuclei and the new physics that these nuclei are teaching us.

Spin 1/2 Fermions in the Unitary Limit.II

This report concerns the energy of a zero-temperature many-body system of spin 1/2 fermions in the unitary limit. In a previous report (arXiv:0705.0944) this energy was determined to be xi~0.24 in units of the free gas kinetic energy, appreciably lower than most reports giving ~0.45$. In our calculation the 2-body interaction satisfied exactly the unitary limit i.e. infinite scattering length and effective range r_0=0. In the present report results with r_0>0are shown. A strong dependence on the effective range is found. It is for example found that an increase to r_0=1 fm increases xi to ~ 0.4 close to other reports of xi in the unitary limit. It is concluded that because of the singular character of the unitary limit it is necessary to verify that the interaction actually satisfies unitarity. The calculations done here in a pp-ladder approximation show a resonance in the in-medium interaction close to (and in) the unitary limit. This was already found in the previous work.

Hot QCD equations of state and response functions for quark-gluon plasma

We study the response functions (chromo-electric susceptibilities) of quark-gluon plasma as a function of temperature in the presence of interactions. We consider two equations of state for hot QCD. The first one is fully perturbative, of $O(g^5)$ EOS and, and the second one which is $O[g^6\ln(1/g)+δ]$, incorporates some non-perturbative effects. Following a recent work (Physical Review {\bf C 76}, 054909(2007)), the interaction effects contained in the EOS are encapsulated in terms of effective chemical potentials($\tildeμ$) in the equilibrium distribution functions for the partons.By using them in another recent formulation of the response functions({\tt arXiv:0707.3697}), we determine explicitly the chromo-electric susceptibilities for QCD plasma. We find that it shows large deviations from the ideal behavior. We further study the modification in the heavy quark potential due to the medium effects. In particular, we determine the temperature dependence of the screening lengths by fixing the effective coupling constant $Q$ which appears in the transport equation by comparing the screening in the present formalism with exact lattice QCD results. Finally, we study the dissociation phenomena of heavy quarkonium states such as $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$, and determine the dissociation temperatures. Our results are in good agreement with recent lattice results.

Nuclear constraints on the momenta of inertia of neutron stars

Properties and structure of neutron stars are determined by the equation of state (EOS) of neutron-rich stellar matter. While the collective flow and particle production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions have constrained tightly the EOS of symmetric nuclear matter up to about five times the normal nuclear matter density, the more recent experimental data on isospin-diffusion and isoscaling in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies have constrained considerably the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy at subsaturation densities. Although there are still many uncertainties and challenges to pin down completely the EOS of neutron-rich nuclear matter, the heavy-ion reaction experiments in terrestrial laboratories have limited the EOS of neutron-rich nuclear matter in a range much narrower than that spanned by various EOSs currently used in astrophysical studies in the literature. These nuclear physics constraints could thus provide more reliable information about properties of neutron stars. Within well established formalisms using the nuclear constrained EOSs we study the momenta of inertia of neutron stars. We put the special emphasis on the component A of the extremely relativistic double neutron star system PSR J0737-3039. Its moment of inertia is found to be between 1.30 and 1.63 $(\times10^{45}g$ $cm^2)$. Moreover, the transition density at the crust-core boundary is shown to be in the narrow range of $ρ_t=[0.091-0.093](fm^{-3})$.

On the time-modulation of the K-shell electron capture decay of H-like 140Pr58+ ions produced by neutrino-flavour mixing

According to recent experimental data at GSI, the rate of the number of daughter ions 140Ce58+, produced by the nuclear K-shell electron capture (EC) decay of the H-like ion 140Pr58+, is modulated in time with a period T_d = 7.06(8) sec and an amplitude a_(EC) = 0.20(2). We show that this phenomenon can be explained by neutrino-flavour mixing and derive a value for the difference of squared masses Delta m^2_(21) = m^2_2 - m^2_1 = 2.22(3)x10^(-4) eV^2.

Viscous fluid dynamics in Au+Au collisions at RHIC

We have studied the space-time evolution of minimally viscous ($\fracη{s}$=0.08) QGP fluid, undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal motion and arbitrary transverse expansion. Relaxation equations for the shear stress tensor components, derived from the phenomenological Israel-Stewart's theory of dissipative relativistic fluid, are solved simultaneously with the energy-momentum conservation equations. Comparison of evolution of ideal and viscous fluid, both initialized under the similar conditions, e.g. same equilibration time, energy density and velocity profile, indicate that in viscous fluid, energy density or temperature of the fluid evolve slowly than in an ideal fluid. Transverse expansion is also more in viscous evolution. We have also studied particle production in viscous dynamics. Compared to ideal dynamics, in viscous dynamics, particle yield at high $p_T$ is increased. Elliptic flow on the other hand decreases. Minimally viscous QGP fluid, initialized at entropy density $s_{ini}$=110 $fm^{-3}$ at the initial time $τ_i$=0.6 fm, if freeze-out at temperature $T_F$=130 MeV, explains the centrality dependence of $p_T$ spectra of identified particles. Experimental $p_T$ spectra of $π^-$, $K^+$ and protons in 0-5%, 5-10%, 10-20%, 20-30%, 30-40% and 40-50% Au+Au collisions are well reproduced through out the experimental $p_T$ range. This is in contrast to ideal dynamics, where, the spectra are reproduced only up to $p_T\approx$1.5 GeV. Minimally viscous QGP fluid, also explain the elliptic flow in mid-central (10-20%, 16-23%, 20-30%) collisions. The minimum bias elliptic flow is also explained. However, the model under-predict/over-predict the elliptic flow in very central/peripheral collisions.

Parton rescattering effect on the charged hadron forward-backward multiplicity correlation in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt s$=200 GeV

The parton rescattering effect on the charged hadron forward-backward multiplicity correlation in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt s$=200 GeV is studied by a parton and hadron cascade model, PACIAE, based on the PYTHIA model. The calculated multiplicity and pseudorapidity distribution of the final state charged hadron are well compared with experimental data. It turned out that the final state charged hadron pseudorapidity distribution are different from the initial state charged partons. The parton rescattering effect on the charged hadron forward-backward multiplicity correlation increases with increasing parton rescattering strength in the center pseudorapidity region ($|η| <1$). However, this effect becomes weaker in the outer pseudorapidity region ($|η|> 1$).

The Phase Diagram of Strongly-Interacting Matter

A fundamental question of physics is what ultimately happens to matter as it is heated or compressed. In the realm of very high temperature and density the fundamental degrees of freedom of the strong interaction, quarks and gluons, come into play and a transition from matter consisting of confined baryons and mesons to a state with 'liberated' quarks and gluons is expected. The study of the possible phases of strongly-interacting matter is at the focus of many research activities worldwide. In this article we discuss physical aspects of the phase diagram, its relation to the evolution of the early universe as well as the inner core of neutron stars. We also summarize recent progress in the experimental study of hadronic or quark-gluon matter under extreme conditions with ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions.
