DFT and TDDFT calculation of lead chalcogenide clusters up to (PbX)$_{32}$

A series of the lead chalcogenide clusters PbnXn (X=S,Se; n=4,8,16,32) with structures as fragments of the bulk crystalline lattice are calculated at DFT level with B3LYP functional and ECP basis set. Optical absorption spectra are simulated through the TDDFT method. The results are in consistence with experimental data PbS and PbSe for magic size clusters of this size range.

Analysing the anisotropy in morphological evolution and readjustment effects in cluster-cluster aggregation of AuNPs using Shannon entropy

We have used information theory analogue of entropy, Shannon entropy, for estimating the variations during the isotropic and anisotropic AuNP fractal growth process. We have firstly applied the Shannon entropy on the simulated fractal aggregates obtained from DLA model with noise reduction scheme. In conventional noise reduction scheme used in past, the growth process of identical particles was performed and no effect of the evolving cluster on the incoming particle was considered, hence the noise is reduced in discrete amount and do not account for the noise fluctuations present during the morphological evolution of the fractals. The Shannon entropy is shown to capture the emergence of the anisotropic morphological evolution. The imaging tool was further found to be promising for capturing the readjustment effects during cluster-cluster aggregation.

Dissociative electron attachment to pulsed supersonic O$_2$ jet : Violation of $Σ^{+} \rightleftharpoons Σ^{-}$ selection rule and dependence on carrier gas proportion

The formation of $O^{-}$ and $O_{2}^{-}$ ions via dissociative electron attachment to a pulsed supersonic jet of $O_{2}$ molecules containing weakly bound small van der Waals clusters seeded in a beam of argon is reported. The energy dependence of the $O^{-}$ and $O_{2}^{-}$ yield exhibits three peaks near 7, 11 and 16 eV incident electron energies. The 7 eV peak arises from the $^{2}Π_{u}$ state of $O_{2}^{-}$ whereas, the 11 and 16 eV peaks are ascribed to two distinct resonance states:$ ^{2}Σ_{g}^{+} $ and $^{2}Σ_{u}^{+}$ states of $O_{2}^{-}$, respectively, via a violation of the $Σ^{+} \rightleftharpoons Σ^{-}$ selection rule. The dependence of the cross-section of these two new peaks at $\sim$11 and $\sim$16 eV on the proportion of the carrier gas is also investigated and an optimum proportion has been observed experimentally which gives the lowest temperature of 14.86 K and highest Mach number of 72.31 for the pulsed supersonic jet.

Autoionization dynamics of He nanodroplets resonantly excited by intense XUV laser pulses

The ionization dynamics of helium droplets in a wide size range from 220 to 10^6 He atoms irradiated with intense femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses of 10^9 ÷ 10^{12} W/cm2 power density is investigated in detail by photoelectron spectroscopy. Helium droplets are resonantly excited in the photon energy range from ~ 21 eV (corresponding to the atomic 1s2s state) up to the atomic ionization potential (IP) at ~ 25 eV. A complex evolution of the electron spectra as a function of droplet size and XUV intensity is observed, ranging from atomic-like narrow peaks due to binary autoionization, to an unstructured feature characteristic of electron emission from a nanoplasma. The experimental results are analyzed and interpreted with the help of numerical simulations based on rate equations taking into account various processes such as multi-step ionization, interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD), secondary inelastic collisions, desorption of electronically excited atoms, collective autoionization (CAI) and further relaxation processes.

Time-resolved observation of interatomic Coulombic decay induced by two-photon double excitation of Ne$_{2}$

The hitherto unexplored two-photon doubly-excited states [Ne$^{*}$($2p^{-1}3s$)]$_{2}$ were experimentally identified using the seeded, fully coherent, intense extreme ultraviolet free-electron laser FERMI. These states undergo ultrafast interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) which predominantly produces singly-ionized dimers. In order to obtain the rate of ICD, the resulting yield of Ne$_{2}^{+}$ ions was recorded as a function of delay between the XUV pump and UV probe laser pulses. The extracted lifetimes of the long-lived doubly-excited states, 390 (-130 / +450} fs, and of the short-lived ones, less than 150~fs, are in good agreement with \emph{ab initio} quantum mechanical calculations.

Better force fields start with better data -- A data set of cation dipeptide interactions

We present a data set from a first-principles study of amino-methylated and acetylated (capped) dipeptides of the 20 proteinogenic amino acids - including alternative possible side chain protonation states and their interactions with selected divalent cations (Ca$^{2+}$, Mg$^{2+}$ and Ba$^{2+}$). The data covers 21,909 stationary points on the respective potential-energy surfaces in a wide relative energy range of up to 4 eV (390 kJ/mol). Relevant properties of interest, like partial charges, were derived for the conformers. The motivation was to provide a solid data basis for force field parameterization and further applications like machine learning or benchmarking. In particular the process of creating all this data on the same first-principles footing, i.e. density-functional theory calculations employing the generalized gradient approximation with a van der Waals correction, makes this data suitable for data-driven force field development. To make the data accessible across domain borders and to machines, we formalized the metadata in an ontology.

Universality in Four-Boson Systems

We report recent advances on the study of universal weakly bound four-boson states from the solutions of the Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations with zero-range two-body interactions. In particular, we present the correlation between the energies of successive tetramers between two neighbor Efimov trimers and compare it to recent finite range potential model calculations. We provide further results on the large momentum structure of the tetramer wave function, where the four-body scale, introduced in the regularization procedure of the bound state equations in momentum space, is clearly manifested. The results we are presenting confirm a previous conjecture on a four-body scaling behavior, which is independent of the three-body one. We show that the correlation between the positions of two successive resonant four-boson recombination peaks are consistent with recent data, as well as with recent calculations close to the unitary limit. Systematic deviations suggest the relevance of range corrections.

Effective Field Theory Analysis of Three-Boson Systems at Next-To-Next-To-Leading Order

We use an effective field theory for short-range forces (SREFT) to analyze systems of three identical bosons interacting via a two-body potential that generates a scattering length, $a$, which is large compared to the range of the interaction, $\ell$. The amplitude for the scattering of one boson off a bound state of the other two is computed to next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO) in the $\ell/a$ expansion. At this order, two pieces of three-body data are required as input in order to renormalize the amplitude (for fixed $a$). We apply our results to a model system of three Helium-4 atoms, which are assumed to interact via the TTY potential. We generate N$^2$LO predictions for atom-dimer scattering below the dimer breakup threshold using the bound-state energy of the shallow Helium-4 trimer and the atom-dimer scattering length as our two pieces of three-body input. Based on the convergence pattern of the SREFT expansion, as well as differences in the predictions of two renormalization schemes, we conclude that our N$^2$LO phase- shift predictions will receive higher-order corrections of $< 0.2$%. In contrast, the prediction of SREFT for the binding energy of the "deep" trimer of Helium-4 atoms displays poor convergence.

Molecular Diffusion Replaces Capillary Pumping in Phase-Change Driven Nanopumps

Nano-scale fluid transport has vast applications spanning from water desalination to biotechnology [1,2]. It is possible to pump fluids in nano-conduits using pressure gradients [3], thermal methods [4], electric [5,6] and magnetic fields [7], and with manipulations of surface chemistry and electric fields [8-10]. Inspired by the capillary-driven phase change heat transfer devices, we present a phase-change driven nanopump operating almost isothermally. Meticulous computational experiments on different sized nanopumps revealed efficient operation of the pump despite the reduction in system size that extinguishes capillary pumping by annihilating the liquid meniscus structures. Measuring the density distribution of liquid in cross sections near to the evaporating and condensing liquid-vapor interfaces, we discovered that phase change induced molecular scale mass diffusion mechanism replaces the capillary pumping in the absence of meniscus structures. Therefore, proposed pumps can serve as a part of both nanoelectromechanical (NEMS) and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) with similar working efficiencies, and can be used for continuous gas separation applications.

On the Spectrum of the Many-Body Pauli Projector

Spectrum of the Pauli projector of a quantum many-body system is studied. It is proven that the kern of the complete many-body projector is identical to the kern of the sum of two-body projectors. Since the kern of the many-body Pauli projector defines an allowed subspace of the complete Hilbert space, it is argued that a truncation of the many-body model space following the two-body Pauli projectors is a natural way when solving the Schrödinger equation for the many-body system. These relations clarify a role of the many-body Pauli forces in a multicluster system.

BOUND and FIELD: programs for calculating bound states of interacting pairs of atoms and molecules

The BOUND program calculates the bound states of a complex formed from two interacting particles using coupled-channel methods. It is particularly suitable for the bound states of atom-molecule and molecule-molecule Van der Waals complexes and for the near-threshold bound states that are important in ultracold physics. It uses a basis set for all degrees of freedom except $R$, the separation of the centres of mass of the two particles. The Schrödinger equation is expressed as a set of coupled equations in $R$. Solutions of the coupled equations are propagated outwards from the classically forbidden region at short range and inwards from the classically forbidden region at long range, and matched at a point in the central region. Built-in coupling cases include atom + rigid linear molecule, atom + vibrating diatom, atom + rigid symmetric top, atom + asymmetric or spherical top, rigid diatom + rigid diatom, and rigid diatom + asymmetric top. Both programs provide an interface for plug-in routines to specify coupling cases (Hamiltonians and basis sets) that are not built in. With appropriate plug-in routines, BOUND can take account of the effects of external electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields, locating bound-state energies at fixed values of the fields. The related program FIELD uses the same plug-in routines and locates values of the fields where bound states exist at a specified energy. As a special case, it can locate values of the external field where bound states cross scattering thresholds and produce zero-energy Feshbach resonances. Plug-in routines are supplied to handle the bound states of a pair of alkali-metal atoms with hyperfine structure in an applied magnetic field.

Structure of a low-lying isomer of BOSi$_2$, as a free-space planar cluster, using the Hartree-Fock method plus second order perturbations

The Hartree-Fock (HF) method, supplemented by low-order Moller-Plesset (MP2) perturbation theory, has been utilized to predict the nuclear geometry, assuming planarity, of a low-lying isomer of the free space cluster BOSi$_2$. The planar structure found at equilibrium geometry is shown to be stable against small amplitude molecular vibrations. Finally, some brief comments are made on the possible relevance of the above free-space cluster geometry to the known B-O defects which limit the improvement of minority carrier lifetime in a form of p-type silicon.

Far infrared measurements of absorptions by CH4+CO2 and H2+CO2 mixtures and implications for greenhouse warming on early Mars

We present an experimental study of the absorption, between 40 and 640 cm$^{-1}$, by CO$_2$, CH$_4$ and H$_2$ gases as well as by H$_2$+CO$_2$ and CH$_4$+CO$_2$ mixtures at room temperature. A Fourier transform spectrometer associated to a multi-pass cell, whose optics were adjusted to obtain a 152 m pathlength, were used to record transmission spectra at total pressures up to about 0.98 bar. These measurements provide information concerning the collision-induced absorption (CIA) bands as well as about the wing of the CO$_2$ 15 $μ$m band. Our results for the CIAs of pure gases are, within uncertainties, in agreement with previous determinations, validating our experimental and data analysis procedures. We then consider the CIAs by H$_2$+CO$_2$ and CH$_4$+CO$_2$ and the low frequency wing of the pure CO$_2$ 15 $μ$m band, for which there are, to our knowledge, no previous measurements. We confirm experimentally the theoretical prediction of Wordsworth et al. 2017 that the H$_2$+CO$_2$ and CH$_4$+CO$_2$ CIAs are significantly stronger in the 50-550 cm$^{-1}$ region than those of H$_2$+N$_2$ and CH$_4$+N$_2$, respectively. However, we find that the shape and the strength of these recorded CIAs differ from the aforementioned predictions. For the pure CO$_2$ line-wings, we show that both the $χ$-factor deduced from measurements near 4 $μ$m and a line-mixing model very well describe the observed strongly sub-Lorentzian behavior in the 500-600 cm$^{-1}$ region. These experimental results open renewed perspectives for studies of the past climate of Mars and extrasolar analogues.

Spectroscopic parameters for silacyclopropynylidene, SiC$_2$, from extensive astronomical observations toward CW Leo (IRC +10216) with the Herschel satellite

A molecular line survey has been carried out toward the carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch star CW Leo employing the HIFI instrument on board of the Herschel satellite. Numerous features from 480 GHz to beyond 1100 GHz could be assigned unambiguously to the fairly floppy SiC$_2$ molecule. However, predictions from laboratory data exhibited large deviations from the observed frequencies even after some lower frequency data from this survey were incorporated into a fit. Therefore, we present a combined fit of all available laboratory data together with data from radio-astronomical observations.

Ultrafast dynamics and fragmentation of C60 in intense laser pulses

The radiation-induced fragmentation of the C60 fullerene was investigated by the tight-binding electron-ion dynamics simulations. In intense laser field, the breathing vibrational mode is much more strongly excited than the pentagonal-pinch mode. The fragmentation effect was found more remarkable at long wavelength lambda>800 nm rather than the resonant wavelengths due to the internal laser-induced dipole force, and the production ratio of C and C2 rapidly grows with increasing wavelength. By such fragmentation law, C atoms, C2 dimers or large Cn fragments could be selectively obtained by changing the laser wavelength. And the fragmentation of C60 by two laser pulses like the multi-step atomic photoionization was investigated.

On the optimal basis set for electron dynamics in strong laser fields: The case of molecular ion H$^{+}_2$

A clear understanding of the mechanisms that control the electron dynamics in strong laser field is still a challenge that requires to be interpreted by advanced theory. Development of accurate theoretical and computational methods, able to provide a precise treatment of the fundamental processes generated in the strong field regime, is therefore crucial. A central aspect is the choice of the basis for the wave-function expansion. Accuracy in describing multiphoton processes is strictly related to the intrinsic properties of the basis, such as numerical convergence, computational cost, and representation of the continuum. By explicitly solving the 1D and 3D time-dependent Schrödinger equation for H$^{+}_{2}$ in presence of an intense electric field, we explore the numerical performance of using a real-space grid, a B-spline basis, and a Gaussian basis (improved by optimal Gaussian functions for the continuum). We analyze the performance of the three bases for high-harmonic generation and above-threshold ionization for H$^{+}_{2}$. In particular, for high-harmonic generation, the capability of the basis to reproduce the two-center interference and the hyper-Raman phenomena is investigated.

Characterization of OCS-HCCCCH and N2O-HCCCCH dimers: Theory and experiment

The infrared spectra of the weakly-bound dimers OCS-HCCCCH, in the region of the nu1 fundamental band of OCS (2050 cm-1), and N2O-HCCCCH, in the region of the nu1 fundamental band of N2O (2200 cm-1), were observed in a pulsed supersonic slit jet expansion probed with tunable diode/QCL lasers. Both OCS-HCCCCH and N2O-HCCCCH were found to have planar structure with side-by-side monomer units having nearly parallel axes. These bands have hybrid rotational structure which allows for estimates of the orientation of OCS and N2O in the plane of their respective dimers. Analogous bands for OCS-DCCCCD and N2O-DCCCCD were also observed and found to be consistent with the normal isotopologues. Various levels of ab initio calculations were performed to find stationary points on the potential energy surface, optimized structures and interaction energies. Four stable geometries were found for OCS-HCCCCH and three for N2O-HCCCCH. The rotational parameters at CCSD(T*)-F12c level of theory give results in very good agreement with those obtained from the observed spectra. In both dimers, the experimental structure corresponds to the lowest energy isomer.

Ionization of Ammonia Nanoices With Adsorbed Methanol Molecules

Large ammonia clusters represent a model system of ices which are omnipresent throughout the space. The interaction of ammonia ices with other hydrogen-boding molecules such as methanol or water and their behavior upon an ionization are thus relevant in the astrochemical context. In this study, ammonia clusters (NH3)N with the mean size N ~230 were prepared in molecular beams and passed through a pickup cell in which methanol molecules were adsorbed. At the highest exploited pickup pressures, the average composition of (NH3)N(CH3OH)M clusters was estimated to be N:M ~210:10. On the other hand, the electron ionization of these clusters yielded about 75% of methanol-containing fragments (NH3)n(CH3OH)mH+ compared to 25% contribution of pure ammonia (NH3)nH+ ions. Based on this substantial disproportion, we propose the following ionization mechanism: The prevailing ammonia is ionized in most cases, resulting in NH+4 core solvated most likely with four ammonia molecules, yielding the well-known "magic number" structure (NH3)4NH+4 . The methanol molecules exhibit strong propensity for sticking to the fragment ion. We have also considered mechanisms of intracluster reactions. In most cases, proton transfer between ammonia units take place. The theoretical calculations suggested the proton transfer either from the methyl group or from the hydroxyl group of the ionized methanol molecule to ammonia to be the energetically open channels. However, the experiments with selectively deuterated methanols did not show any evidence for the D+ transfer from the CD3 group. The proton transfer from the hydroxyl group could not be excluded entirely nor confirmed unambiguously by the experiment.
