Self-similarity in Spectral Problems and q-special Functions

Similarity symmetries of the factorization chains for one-dimensional differential and finite-difference Schrödinger equations are discussed. Properties of the potentials defined by self-similar reductions of these chains are reviewed. In particular, their algebraic structure, relations to $q$-special functions, infinite soliton systems, supersymmetry, coherent states, orthogonal polynomials, one-dimensional Ising chains and random matrices are outlined.

Resonant Bifurcations

We consider dynamical systems depending on one or more real parameters, and assuming that, for some ``critical'' value of the parameters, the eigenvalues of the linear part are resonant, we discuss the existence -- under suitable hypotheses -- of a general class of bifurcating solutions in correspondence to this resonance. These bifurcating solutions include, as particular cases, the usual stationary and Hopf bifurcations. The main idea is to transform the given dynamical system into normal form (in the sense of Poincaré-Dulac), and to impose that the normalizing transformation is convergent, using the convergence conditions in the form given by A. Bruno. Some specially interesting situations, including the cases of multiple-periodic solutions, and of degenerate eigenvalues in the presence of symmetry, are also discussed with some detail.

The Pfaff lattice, Matrix integrals and a map from Toda to Pfaff

We study the Pfaff lattice, introduced by us in the context of a Lie algebra splitting of gl(infinity) into sp(infinity) and lower-triangular matrices. We establish a set of bilinear identities, which we show to be equivalent to the Pfaff Lattice. In the semi-infinite case, the tau-functions are Pfaffians; interesting examples are the matrix integrals over symmetric matrices (symmetric matrix integrals) and matrix integrals over self-dual quaternionic Hermitean matrices (symplectic matrix integrals). There is a striking parallel of the Pfaff lattice with the Toda lattice, and more so, there is a map from one to the other. In particular, we exhibit two maps, dual to each other, (i) from the the Hermitean matrix integrals to the symmetric matrix integrals, and (ii) from the Hermitean matrix integrals to the symplectic matrix integrals. The map is given by the skew-Borel decomposition of a skew-symmetric operator. We give explicit examples for the classical weights.

Four Dimensional Integrable Theories

There exist many four dimensional integrable theories. They include self-dual gauge and gravity theories, all their extended supersymmetric generalisations, as well the full (non-self-dual) N=3 super Yang-Mills equations. We review the harmonic space formulation of the twistor transform for these theories which yields a method of producing explicit connections and metrics. This formulation uses the concept of harmonic space analyticity which is closely related to that of quaternionic analyticity. (Talk by V. Isospectral Flow and Liouville-Arnold Integration in Loop Algebras

A number of examples of Hamiltonian systems that are integrable by classical means are cast within the framework of isospectral flows in loop algebras. These include: the Neumann oscillator, the cubically nonlinear Schrödinger systems and the sine-Gordon equation. Each system has an associated invariant spectral curve and may be integrated via the Liouville-Arnold technique. The linearizing map is the Abel map to the associated Jacobi variety, which is deduced through separation of variables in hyperellipsoidal coordinates. More generally, a family of moment maps is derived, identifying certain finite dimensional symplectic manifolds with rational coadjoint orbits of loop algebras. Integrable Hamiltonians are obtained by restriction of elements of the ring of spectral invariants to the image of these moment maps. The isospectral property follows from the Adler-Kostant-Symes theorem, and gives rise to invariant spectral curves. {\it Spectral Darboux coordinates} are introduced on rational coadjoint orbits, generalizing the hyperellipsoidal coordinates to higher rank cases. Applying the Liouville-Arnold integration technique, the Liouville generating function is expressed in completely separated form as an abelian integral, implying the Abel map linearization in the general case.

Introduction to Random Matrices

These notes provide an introduction to the theory of random matrices. The central quantity studied is $τ(a)= det(1-K)$ where $K$ is the integral operator with kernel $1/π} {\sinπ(x-y)\over x-y} χ_I(y)$. Here $I=\bigcup_j(a_{2j-1},a_{2j})$ and $χ_I(y)$ is the characteristic function of the set $I$. In the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) the probability that no eigenvalues lie in $I$ is equal to $τ(a)$. Also $τ(a)$ is a tau-function and we present a new simplified derivation of the system of nonlinear completely integrable equations (the $a_j$'s are the independent variables) that were first derived by Jimbo, Miwa, M{ô}ri, and Sato in 1980. In the case of a single interval these equations are reducible to a Painlev{é} V equation. For large $s$ we give an asymptotic formula for $E_2(n;s)$, which is the probability in the GUE that exactly $n$ eigenvalues lie in an interval of length $s$.

Symplectic Integration without Roundoff Error

Most numerical integration algorithms are not designed specifically for Hamiltonian systems and do not respect their characteristic properties, which include the preservation of phase space volume with time. This can lead to spurious damping or excitation. Methods that do preserve all the Hamiltonian properties, i.e., for which the time-forward map is symplectic, are called symplectic integration algorithms or SIAs. Although such integrators are symplectic in theory, they are not symplectic if implemented using finite-precision arithmetic. This paper explains how to eliminate this problem by using ``Lattice SIAs'' and shows that these methods yield significant advantages when the computational error is dominated by roundoff. Using a lattice SIA is equivalent to evolving the exact solution of a problem with a Hamiltonian that is slightly different from the original. Lattice methods are useful for studies of the long-term evolution of Hamiltonian dynamical systems.

Hidden Symmetries of the Principal Chiral Model Unveiled

By relating the two-dimensional U(N) Principal Chiral Model to a simple linear system we obtain a free-field parametrisation of solutions. Obvious symmetry transformations on the free-field data give symmetries of the model. In this way all known `hidden symmetries' and Bäcklund transformations, as well as a host of new symmetries, arise.

Unified Approach to Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz and Finite Size Corrections for Lattice Models and Field Theories

We present a unified approach to the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) for magnetic chains and field theories that includes the finite size (and zero temperature) calculations for lattice BA models. In all cases, the free energy follows by quadratures from the solution of a {\bf single} non-linear integral equation (NLIE). [A system of NLIE appears for nested BA]. We derive the NLIE for: a) the six-vertex model with twisted boundary conditions; b) the XXZ chain in an external magnetic field $h_z$ and c) the sine-Gordon-massive Thirring model (sG-mT) in a periodic box of size $\b \equiv 1/T $ using the light-cone approach. This NLIE is solved by iteration in one regime (high $T$ in the XXZ chain and low $T$ in the sG-mT model). In the opposite (conformal) regime, the leading behaviors are obtained in closed form. Higher corrections can be derived from the Riemann-Hilbert form of the NLIE that we present.

Surface operator content of the A_L face models

A set of fixed boundary weights for both the critical dense and dilute A_L face models is constructed from the known boundary weights of the related loop model. The surface operator content and the conformal partition functions then follow from the results obtained via the Bethe equations.

Spontaneous magnetization of the XXZ Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain

Determinant representations of form factors are used to represent the spontaneous magnetization of the Heisenberg XXZ chain (Delta >1) on the finite lattice as the ratio of two determinants. In the thermodynamic limit (the lattice of infinite length), the Baxter formula is reproduced in the framework of Algebraic Bethe Ansatz. It is shown that the finite size corrections to the Baxter formula are exponentially small.

Form factors of the XXZ Heisenberg spin-1/2 finite chain

Form factors for local spin operators of the XXZ Heisenberg spin-1/2 finite chain are computed. Representation theory of Drinfel'd twists for the sl2 quantum affine algebra in finite dimensional modules is used to calculate scalar products of Bethe states (leading to Gaudin formula) and to solve the quantum inverse problem for local spin operators in the finite XXZ chain. Hence, we obtain the representation of the n-spin correlation functions in terms of expectation values(in ferromagnetic reference state) of the operator entries of the quantum monodromy matrix satisfying Yang-Baxter algebra. This leads to the direct calculation of the form factors of the XXZ Heisenberg spin-1/2 finite chain as determinants of usual functions of the parameters of the model. A two-point correlation function for adjacent sites is also derived using similar techniques.

Evolution equations for quark-gluon distributions in multi-color QCD and open spin chains

We study the scale dependence of the twist-3 quark-gluon parton distributions using the observation that in the multi-color limit the corresponding QCD evolution equations possess an additional integral of motion and turn out to be effectively equivalent to the Schrodinger equation for integrable open Heisenberg spin chain model. We identify the integral of motion of the spin chain as a new quantum number that separates different components of the twist-3 parton distributions. Each component evolves independently and its scale dependence is governed by anomalous dimension given by the energy of the spin magnet. To find the spectrum of the QCD induced open Heisenberg spin magnet we develop the Bethe Ansatz technique based on the Baxter equation. The solutions to the Baxter equation are constructed using different asymptotic methods and their properties are studied in detail. We demonstrate that the obtained solutions provide a good qualitative description of the spectrum of the anomalous dimensions and reveal a number of interesting properties. We show that the few lowest anomalous dimensions are separated from the rest of the spectrum by a finite mass gap and estimate its value.

Chern-Simons Solitons in Quantum Potential

The self-dual Chern-Simons solitons under the influence of the quantum potential are considered. The single-valuedness condition for an arbitrary integer number $N \ge 0$ of solitons leads to quantization of Chern-Simons coupling constant $κ= m {e^{2} \over g}$, and the integer strength of quantum potential $s = 1 - m^{2}$. As we show, the Jackiw-Pi model corresponds to the first member (m = 1) of our hierarchy of the Chern-Simons gauged nonlinear Schrödinger models, admitting self-dual solitons. New type of exponentially localized Chern-Simons solitons for the Bloch electrons near the hyperbolic energy band boundary are found.

Determinants of Airy Operators and Applications to Random Matrices

The purpose of this paper is to describe asymptotic formulas for determinants of certain operators that are analogues of Wiener-Hopf operators. The determinant formulas yield information about the distribution functions for certain random variables that arise in random matrix theory when one rescales at the edge of the spectrum.

Lax pair tensors and integrable spacetimes

The use of Lax pair tensors as a unifying framework for Killing tensors of arbitrary rank is discussed. Some properties of the tensorial Lax pair formulation are stated. A mechanical system with a well-known Lax representation -- the three-particle open Toda lattice -- is geometrized by a suitable canonical transformation. In this way the Toda lattice is realized as the geodesic system of a certain Riemannian geometry. By using different canonical transformations we obtain two inequivalent geometries which both represent the original system. Adding a timelike dimension gives four-dimensional spacetimes which admit two Killing vector fields and are completely integrable.

Algebraic Structure of Discrete Zero Curvature Equations and Master Symmetries of Discrete Evolution Equations

An algebraic structure related to discrete zero curvature equations is established. It is used to give an approach for generating master symmetries of first degree for systems of discrete evolution equations and an answer to why there exist such master symmetries. The key of the theory is to generate nonisospectral flows $(λ_t=λ^l, l\ge0)$ from the discrete spectral problem associated with a given system of discrete evolution equations. Three examples are given.
