Ginzburg-Landau equation for steps on creep curve

We consider a model proposed earlier by us for describing a form of plastic instability found in creep experiments . The model consists of three types of dislocations and some transformations between them. The model is known to reproduce a number of experimentally observed features. The mechanism for the phenomenon has been shown to be Hopf bifurcation with respect to physically relevant drive parameters. Here, we present a mathematical analysis of adiabatically eliminating the fast mode and obtaining a Ginzburg-Landau equation for the slow modes associated with the steps on creep curve. The transition to the instability region is found to be one of subcritical bifurcation over most of the interval of one of the parameters while supercritical bifurcation is found in a narrow mid-range of the parameter. This result is consistent with experiments. The dependence of the amplitude and the period of strain jumps on stress and temperature derived from the Ginzburg-Landau equation are also consistent with experiments. On the basis of detailed numerical solution via power series expansion, we show that high order nonlinearities control a large portion of the subcritical domain.

Modeling noisy time series: Physiological tremor

Empirical time series often contain observational noise. We investigate the effect of this noise on the estimated parameters of models fitted to the data. For data of physiological tremor, i.e. a small amplitude oscillation of the outstretched hand of healthy subjects, we compare the results for a linear model that explicitly includes additional observational noise to one that ignores this noise. We discuss problems and possible solutions for nonlinear deterministic as well as nonlinear stochastic processes. Especially we discuss the state space model applicable for modeling noisy stochastic systems and Bock's algorithm capable for modeling noisy deterministic systems.

Synchronization of chaotic systems driven by identical noise

An analysis of transition from chaotic to nonchaotic behavior and synchronization in an ensemble of systems driven by identical random forces is presented. The synchronization phenomenon is investigated in the ensemble of particles moving with friction in the time-dependent potential and driven by the identical noise. The threshold values of the parameters for transition from chaotic to nonchaotic behavior are obtained and dependencies of the Lyapunov exponents and power spectral density of the current of the ensemble of particles on the nonlinearity of the systems and intensity of the driven force are analyzed.

Lyapunov Exponents for the Intermittent Transition to Chaos

The dependence of the Lyapunov exponent on the closeness parameter, $ε$, in tangent bifurcation systems is investigated. We study and illustrate two averaging procedures for defining Lyapunov exponents in such systems. First, we develop theoretical expressions for an isolated tangency channel in which the Lyapunov exponent is defined on single channel passes. Numerical simulations were done to compare theory to measurement across a range of $ε$ values. Next, as an illustration of defining the Lyapunov exponent on many channel passes, a simulation of the intermittent transition in the logistic map is described. The modified theory for the channels is explained and a simple model for the gate entrance rates is constructed. An important correction due to the discrete nature of the iterative flow is identified and incorporated in an improved model. Realistic fits to the data were made for the Lyapunov exponents from the logistic gate and from the full simulation. A number of additional corrections which could improve the treatment of the gates are identified and briefly discussed.

Nonlinear projective filtering in a data stream

We introduce a modified algorithm to perform nonlinear filtering of a time series by locally linear phase space projections. Unlike previous implementations, the algorithm can be used not only for a posteriori processing but includes the possibility to perform real time filtering in a data stream. The data base that represents the phase space structure generated by the data is updated dynamically. This also allows filtering of non-stationary signals and dynamic parameter adjustment. We discuss exemplary applications, including the real time extraction of the fetal electrocardiogram from abdominal recordings.

Spiral Waves in Media with Complex Excitable Dynamics

The structure of spiral waves is investigated in super-excitable reaction-diffusion systems where the local dynamics exhibits multi-looped phase space trajectories. It is shown that such systems support stable spiral waves with broken symmetry and complex temporal dynamics. The main structural features of such waves, synchronization defect lines, are demonstrated to be similar to those of spiral waves in systems with complex-oscillatory dynamics.

Spatiotemporal Chaos, Localized Structures and Synchronization in the Vector Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation

We study the spatiotemporal dynamics, in one and two spatial dimensions, of two complex fields which are the two components of a vector field satisfying a vector form of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. We find synchronization and generalized synchronization of the spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics. The two kinds of synchronization can coexist simultaneously in different regions of the space, and they are mediated by localized structures. A quantitative characterization of the degree of synchronization is given in terms of mutual information measures.

Cluster dynamics in systems with constant mean field coupling

A procedure to predict the occurrence of periodic clusters in a system of globally coupled maps displaying a constant mean field is presented. The method employs the analogy between a system of globally coupled maps and a single map driven by a constant force. By obtaining the asymptotic orbits of the driven map, an associated coupling function can be constructed. This function allows to establish a direct connection between both systems. Some applications are shown.

Density Fluctuations in Traffic Flow

Density fluctuations in traffic current are studied by computer simulations using the deterministic coupled map lattice model on a closed single-lane circuit. By calculating a power spectral density of temporal density fluctuations at a local section, we find a power-law behavior, $\sim 1/f^{1.8}$, on the frequency $f$, in non-congested flow phase. The distribution of the headway distance $h$ also shows the power law like $\sim 1/h^{3.0} $ at the same time. The power law fluctuations are destroyed by the occurence of the traffic jam.

Dripping Faucet Dynamics Clarified by an Improved Mass-Spring Model

An improved mass-spring model for a dripping faucet is presented. The model is constructed based on the numerical results which we recently obtained from fluid dynamical calculations. Both the fluid dynamical calculations and the present mass-spring model exhibit a variety of complex behavior including transition to chaos in good agreement with experiments. Further, the mass-spring model reveals fundamental dynamics inherent in the dripping faucet system.

Renormalization group equations and integrability in Hamiltonian systems

We investigate Hamiltonian systems with two degrees of freedom by using renormalization group method. We show that the original Hamiltonian systems and the renormalization group equations are integrable if the renormalization group equations are Hamiltonian systems up to the second leading order of a small parameter.

Numerical simulations on Szilard's engine and information erasure

We present a computational model for Szilard's engine and the information discarding process. Taking advantage of a fact that the one is essentially the reversed cycle of the other, we can discuss the both by employing the same model. Through numerical simulations we calculate the work extracted by the engine and the heat generation in the information discarding process. It is found that these quantities depend on some realistic ingredients, which means that the work done by the engine is no longer canceled by the heat generation in the information erasure.

The Intersection Angles between N-Dimensional Stable and Unstable Manifolds in 2N-Dimensional Symplectic Mappings

We asymptotically compute the intersection angles between N-dimensional stable and unstable manifolds in 2N-dimensional symplectic mappings. There exist particular 1-dimensional stable and unstable sub-manifolds which experience exponentially small splitting of separatrix in our models. We show that the angle between the sub-manifolds is exponentially small with respect to the perturbation parameter $ε$, and the other angles are $O(ε^2)$.

A New Type of Irregular Motion in a Class of Game Dynamics Systems

A new type of asymptotic behavior in a game dynamics system is discovered. The system exhibits behavior which combines chaotic motion and attraction to heteroclinic cycles; the trajectory visits several unstable stationary states repeatedly with an irregular order, and the typical length of the stay near the steady states grows exponentially with the number of visits. The dynamics underlying this irregular motion is analyzed by introducing a dynamically rescaled time variable, and its relation to the low-dimensional chaotic dynamics is thus uncovered. The relation of this irregular motion with a strange type of instability of heteroclinic cycles is also examined.

Slow Relaxation at Critical Point of Second Order Phase Transition in a Highly Chaotic Hamiltonian System

Temporal evolutions toward thermal equilibria are numerically investigated in a Hamiltonian system with many degrees of freedom which has second order phase transition. Relaxation processes are studied through local order parameter, and slow relaxations of power type are observed at the critical energy of phase transition for some initial conditions. Numerical results are compared with results of a phenomenological theory of statistical mechanics. At the critical energy, the maximum Lyapunov exponent takes the largest value. Temporal evolutions and probability distributions of local Lyapunov exponents show that the system is highly chaotic rather than weakly chaotic at the critical energy. Consequently theories for perturbed systems may not be applied to the system at the critical energy in order to explain the slow relaxation of power type.

The Renormalization-Group Method Applied to Asymptotic Analysis of Vector Fields

The renormalization group method of Goldenfeld, Oono and their collaborators is applied to asymptotic analysis of vector fields. The method is formulated on the basis of the theory of envelopes, as was done for scalar fields. This formulation actually completes the discussion of the previous work for scalar equations. It is shown in a generic way that the method applied to equations with a bifurcation leads to the Landau-Stuart and the (time-dependent) Ginzburg-Landau equations. It is confirmed that this method is actually a powerful theory for the reduction of the dynamics as the reductive perturbation method is. Some examples for ordinary diferential equations, such as the forced Duffing, the Lotka-Volterra and the Lorenz equations, are worked out in this method: The time evolution of the solution of the Lotka-Volterra equation is explicitly given, while the center manifolds of the Lorenz equation are constructed in a simple way in the RG method.
