Interpolation in waveform space: enhancing the accuracy of gravitational waveform families using numerical relativity

Matched-filtering for the identification of compact object mergers in gravitational-wave antenna data involves the comparison of the data stream to a bank of template gravitational waveforms. Typically the template bank is constructed from phenomenological waveform models since these can be evaluated for an arbitrary choice of physical parameters. Recently it has been proposed that singular value decomposition (SVD) can be used to reduce the number of templates required for detection. As we show here, another benefit of SVD is its removal of biases from the phenomenological templates along with a corresponding improvement in their ability to represent waveform signals obtained from numerical relativity (NR) simulations. Using these ideas, we present a method that calibrates a reduced SVD basis of phenomenological waveforms against NR waveforms in order to construct a new waveform approximant with improved accuracy and faithfulness compared to the original phenomenological model. The new waveform family is given numerically through the interpolation of the projection coefficients of NR waveforms expanded onto the reduced basis and provides a generalized scheme for enhancing phenomenological models.

Gauge field localization on the Bloch Brane

We present new results on the localization of gauge fields in thick brane models. The four-dimensional observable universe is considered to be a topological defect which is generated by two scalar fields coupled with gravity embedded in a five-dimensional space-time. Like other thick brane models, the Bloch brane setup is not capable of supporting gauge field localization. In order to circumvent this problem we include the dilaton field and, as a result, obtain normalizable solutions. In addition, by writing the equations of motion as Schroedinger-like equations, we have found new kinds of resonances in the massive spectrum which appear also for heavy modes. This is in sharp contrast to what is commonly found in previous analog studies, where only light modes become resonant. At specific energies, the wave solutions exhibit very high amplitudes within the membrane. The influence of the dilaton coupling and of the internal structure on the resonant modes are also discussed.

Three-Dimensional General-Relativistic Hydrodynamic Simulations of Binary Neutron Star Coalescence and Stellar Collapse with Multipatch Grids

We present a new three-dimensional general-relativistic hydrodynamic evolution scheme coupled to dynamical spacetime evolutions which is capable of efficiently simulating stellar collapse, isolated neutron stars, black hole formation, and binary neutron star coalescence. We make use of a set of adapted curvi-linear grids (multipatches) coupled with flux-conservative cell-centered adaptive mesh refinement. This allows us to significantly enlarge our computational domains while still maintaining high resolution in the gravitational-wave extraction zone, the exterior layers of a star, or the region of mass ejection in merging neutron stars. The fluid is evolved with a high-resolution shock capturing finite volume scheme, while the spacetime geometry is evolved using fourth-order finite differences. We employ a multi-rate Runge-Kutta time integration scheme for efficiency, evolving the fluid with second-order and the spacetime geometry with fourth-order integration, respectively. We validate our code by a number of benchmark problems: a rotating stellar collapse model, an excited neutron star, neutron star collapse to a black hole, and binary neutron star coalescence. The test problems, especially the latter, greatly benefit from higher resolution in the gravitational-wave extraction zone, causally disconnected outer boundaries, and application of Cauchy-characteristic gravitational-wave extraction. We show that we are able to extract convergent gravitational-wave modes up to (l,m)=(6,6). This study paves the way for more realistic and detailed studies of compact objects and stellar collapse in full three dimensions and in large computational domains. The multipatch infrastructure and the improvements to mesh refinement and hydrodynamics codes discussed in this paper will be made available as part of the open-source Einstein Toolkit.

Canonical Angles In A Compact Binary Star System With Spinning Components: Approximative Solution Through Next-To-Leading-Order Spin-Orbit Interaction for Circular Orbits

This publication will deal with an explicit determination of the time evolution of the spin orientation axes and the evolution of the orbital phase in the case of circular orbits under next-to-leading order spin-orbit interactions. We modify the method of Schneider and Cui proposed in ["Theoreme über Bewegungsintegrale und ihre Anwendungen in Bahntheorien", Verlag der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, volume 212, 2005.] to iteratively remove oscillatory terms in the equations of motion for different masses that were not present in the case of equal masses. Our smallness parameter is chosen to be the difference of the symmetric mass ratio to the value 1/4. Before the first Lie transformation, the set of conserved quantities consists of the total angular momentum, the amplitudes of the orbital angular momentum and of the spins, $L, S_1,$ and $S_2$. In contrary, the magnitude of the total spin $S=|S_1+S_2|$ is not conserved and we wish to shift its non-conservation to higher orders of the smallness parameter. We perform the iterations explicitly to first order, while performing higher orders would mean no structural difference or harder mathematical difficulties. To apply this method, we develop a canonical system of spin variables reduced by the conservation law of total angular momentum, which is imposed on the phase space as a constraint. The result is an asymptotic series in $ε$ that may be truncated appropriately considering the physical properties of the regarded system.

Fermionic Casimir densities in anti-de Sitter spacetime

The fermionic condensate and vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor, for a massive fermionic field on the background of anti-de Sitter spacetime, in the geometry of two parallel boundaries with bag boundary conditions, are investigated. Vacuum expectation values, expressed as series involving the eigenvalues of the radial quantum number, are neatly decomposed into boundary-free, single-boundary-induced, and second-boundary-induced parts, with the help of the generalized Abel-Plana summation formula. In this way, the renormalization procedure is very conveniently reduced to the one corresponding to boundary-free AdS spacetime. The boundary-induced contributions to the fermionic condensate and to the vacuum expectation value of the energy density are proven to be everywhere negative. The vacuum expectation values are exponentially suppressed at distances from the boundaries much larger than the curvature radius of the AdS space. Near the boundaries, effects related with the curvature of the background spacetime are shown to be subdominant and, to leading order, all known results for boundaries in the Minkowski bulk are recovered. Zeta function techniques are successfully used for the evaluation of the total vacuum energy in the region between the boundaries. It is proven that the resulting interaction forces between them are attractive and that, for large separations, they also decay exponentially. Finally, our results are extended and explicitly translated to fermionic Casimir densities in braneworld scenarios of Randall-Sundrum type.

Curvature Singularities from Gravitational Contraction in f(R) Gravity

The discovery of the accelerated expansion of the Universe has had a vast resonance on a number of physical disciplines. In recent years several viable modified gravity models have been proposed, which naturally lead to a late-time de Sitter stage while basically reducing to General Relativity in the early Universe. We consider a contracting cloud of pressureless dust, having arbitrary mass and initial density, and discuss some aspects of these modified gravity models. We show how the increasing energy/mass density may lead to a curvature singularity and discuss the typical timescales for its development.

PM = EM: Partially Massless Duality Invariance

In d=4 de Sitter space, novel conformally invariant photon-like theories consistently couple to charged matter. We show that these higher spin, maximal depth, partially massless systems enjoy a Maxwellian, "electric-magnetic" duality.

Accretion Disks Around Binary Black Holes: A Simple GR-Hybrid Evolution Model

We consider a geometrically thin, Keplerian disk in the orbital plane of a binary black hole (BHBH) consisting of a spinning primary and low-mass secondary (mass ratio q < 1). To account for the principle effects of general relativity (GR), we propose a modification of the standard Newtonian evolution equation for the (orbit-averaged) time-varying disk surface density. In our modified equation the viscous torque in the disk is treated in full GR, while the tidal torque is handled in the Newtonian limit. Our GR-hybrid treatment is reasonable because the tidal torque is concentrated near the orbital radius of the secondary and is most important prior to binary-disk decoupling, when the orbital separation is large and resides in the weak-field regime. The tidal torque on the disk diminishes during late merger and vanishes altogether following merger. By contrast, the viscous torque drives the flow into the strong-field region and onto the primary during all epochs. Following binary coalescence, the viscous torque alone governs the time-dependent accretion onto the remnant, as well as the temporal behavior, strength and spectrum of the aftermath electromagnetic radiation from the disk. We solve our GR-hybrid equation for a representative BHBH-disk system, identify several observable EM signatures of the merger, and compare results obtained for the gas and EM radiation with those found with the Newtonian prescription.

The parameter space in Galileon gravity models

We present the first constraints on the full parameter space of the Galileon modified gravity model, considering both the cosmological parameters and the coefficients which specify the additional terms in the Lagrangian due to the Galileon field, which we call the Galileon parameters. We use the latest cosmic microwave background measurements, along with distance measurements from supernovae and baryonic acoustic oscillations, performing a Monte Carlo Markov Chain exploration of the 9-dimensional parameter space. The integrated Sachs-Wolfe signal can be very different in Galileon models compared to standard gravity, making it essential to use the full CMB data rather than the CMB distance priors. We demonstrate that meaningful constraints are only possible in the Galileon parameter space after taking advantage of a scaling degeneracy. We find that the Galileon model can fit the WMAP 9-year results better than the standard Λ-Cold Dark Matter model, but gives a slightly worse fit overall once lower redshift distance measurements are included. The best-fitting cosmological parameters (e.g. matter density, scalar spectral index, fluctuation amplitude) can differ by more than 2σ in the Galileon model compared with ΛCDM. We highlight other potential constraints of the Galileon model using galaxy clustering and weak lensing measurements.

Gravitational modulated reheating and non-Gaussianity in Supergravity R^2 inflation

Reheating after R^2 inflation proceeds through gravitational particle production of conformally noninvariant fields. We argue that the nonvanishing expectation value of flat directions generic in supersymmetric theories break conformal invariance of the fields coupled to them in a position-dependent manner due to quantum fluctuations. As a result modulated reheating can occur after the supergravity R^2-inflation. The resultant curvature fluctuation is a mixture of the one produced during inflation and that produced by modulated reheating. The spectral index takes a value between n_s=0.960 and 0.983, the nonlinearity parameter of the local-type non-Gaussianity can be f_nl\sim \pm 10, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio is r \le 4\times 10^{-3}.

Smoking guns of a bounce in modified theories of gravity through the spectrum of the gravitational waves

We present an inflationary model preceded by a bounce in a metric theory a lá $f(R)$ where $R$ is the scalar curvature of the space-time. The model is asymptotically de Sitter such that the gravitational action tends asymptotically to a Hilbert-Einstein action, therefore modified gravity affects only the early stages of the universe. We then analyse the spectrum of the gravitational waves through the method of the Bogoliubov coefficients by two means: taking into account the gravitational perturbations due to the modified gravitational action in the $f(R)$ setup and by simply considering those perturbations inherent to the standard Hilbert-Einstein action. We show that there are distinctive (oscillatory) signals on the spectrum for very low frequencies; i.e. corresponding to modes that are currently entering the horizon.

The blackness of the cosmic microwave background spectrum as a probe of the distance-duality relation

A violation of the reciprocity relation, which induces a violation of the distance duality relation, reflects itself in a change in the normalisation of the cosmic microwave spectrum in such a way that its spectrum is grey. We show that existing observational constraints imply that the reciprocity relation cannot be violated by more than 0.01% between decoupling and today. We compare this effect to other sources of violation of the distance duality relations which induce spectral distortion of the cosmic microwave background spectrum.

Relativistic effects in galaxy clustering in a parametrized post-Friedmann universe

We explore the signatures of quintessence and modified gravity theories in the relativistic description of galaxy clustering within a parametrized post-Friedmann framework. For this purpose, we develop a calibration method to consistently account for horizon-scale effects in the linear parametrized Post-Friedmann perturbations of minimally and nonminimally coupled scalar-tensor theories and test it against the full model-specific fluctuations. We further study the relativistic effects in galaxy clustering for the normal and self-accelerating branches of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati braneworld model as well as for phenomenological modifications of gravity. We quantify the impact of modified gravity and dark energy models on galaxy clustering by computing the velocity-to-matter density ratio F, the velocity contribution R, and the potential contribution P and give an estimate of their detectability in future galaxy surveys. Our results show that, in general, the relativistic correction contains additional information on gravity and dark energy, which needs to be taken into account in consistent horizon-scale tests of departures from LCDM using the galaxy-density field.

Antiscreening in perturbative quantum gravity and resolving the Newtonian singularity

We calculate the quantum corrections to the Newtonian potential induced by a massless, nonminimally coupled scalar field on Minkowski background. We make use of the graviton vacuum polarization calculated in our previous work and solve the equation of motion nonperturbatively. When written as the quantum-corrected gauge invariant Bardeen potentials, our results show that quantum effects generically antiscreen the Newtonian singularity 1/r. This result supports the point of view that gravity on (super-)Planckian scales is an asymptotically safe theory. In addition, we show that, in the presence of quantum fluctuations of a massless, (non)minimally coupled scalar field, dynamical gravitons propagate superluminally. The effect is, however, unbservably small and it is hence of academic interest only.

QFT on quantum spacetime: a compatible classical framework

We develop a systematic classical framework to accommodate canonical quantization of geometric and matter perturbations on a quantum homogeneous isotropic flat spacetime. The existing approach of standard cosmological perturbations is indeed proved to be good only up to first order in the inhomogeneities, and only if the background is treated classically. To consistently quantize the perturbations \emph{and} the background, a new set of classical phase space variables is required. We show that, in a natural gauge, a set of such Dirac observables exists, and their algebra is of the canonical form. Finally, we compute the physical Hamiltonian that generates the dynamics of such observables with respect to the homogeneous part of a K-G "clock" field $T$. The results of this work provide a good starting point to understanding and calculating effects that quantum cosmological spacetime in the background has on the quantum perturbations of the metric tensor and of matter fields.

Awaking the vacuum with spheroidal shells

It has been shown that well-behaved spacetimes may induce the vacuum fluctuations of some nonminimally coupled free scalar fields to go through a phase of exponential growth. Here, we discuss this mechanism in the context of spheroidal thin shells emphasizing the consequences of deviations from spherical symmetry.

Quantum singularities in spherically symmetric, conformally static spacetimes

A definition of quantum singularity for the case of static spacetimes has recently been extended to conformally static spacetimes. Here the theory behind quantum singularities in conformally static spacetimes is reviewed, and then applied to a class of spherically symmetric, conformally static spacetimes, including as special cases those studied by Roberts, by Fonarev, and by Husain, Martinez, and Núñez. We use solutions of the generally coupled, massless Klein-Gordon equation as test fields. In this way we find the ranges of metric parameters and coupling coefficients for which classical timelike singularities in these spacetimes are healed quantum mechanically.

Stringent constraint on neutrino Lorentz-invariance violation from the two IceCube PeV neutrinos

It has been speculated that Lorentz-invariance violation (LIV) might be generated by quantum-gravity (QG) effects. As a consequence, particles may not travel at the universal speed of light. In particular, superluminal extragalactic neutrinos would rapidly lose energy via the bremssthralung of electron-positron pairs (nu -> nu e+ e-), damping their initial energy into electromagnetic cascades, a figure constrained by Fermi-LAT data. We show that the two cascade neutrino events with energies around 1 PeV recently detected by IceCube -if attributed to extragalactic diffuse events, as it appears likely- can place the strongest bound on LIV in the neutrino sector, namely delta =(v^2-1) < O(10^(-18)), corresponding to a QG scale M_QG ~ 10^5 M_Pl (M_QG >~ 10^(-4) M_Pl) for a linear (quadratic) LIV, at least for models inducing superluminal neutrino effects (delta > 0).
