Local BRST cohomology and covariance

The paper provides a framework for a systematic analysis of the local BRST cohomology in a large class of gauge theories. The approach is based on the cohomology of s+d in the jet space of fields and antifields, s and d being the BRST operator and exterior derivative respectively. It relates the BRST cohomology to an underlying gauge covariant algebra and reduces its computation to a compactly formulated problem involving only suitably defined generalized connections and tensor fields. The latter are shown to provide the building blocks of physically relevant quantities such as gauge invariant actions, Noether currents and gauge anomalies, as well as of the equations of motion.

A conjectural generating function for numbers of curves on surfaces

I give a conjectural generating function for the numbers of $δ$-nodal curves in a linear system of dimension $δ$ on an algebraic surface. It reproduces the results of Vainsencher for the case $δ\le 6$ and Kleiman-Piene for the case $δ\le 8$. The numbers of curves are expressed in terms of five universal power series, three of which I give explicitly as quasimodular forms. This gives in particular the numbers of curves of arbitrary genus on a K3 surface and an abelian surface in terms of quasimodular forms, generalizing the formula of Yau-Zaslow for rational curves on K3 surfaces. The coefficients of the other two power series can be determined by comparing with the recursive formulas of Caporaso-Harris for the Severi degrees in $¶_2$. We verify the conjecture for genus 2 curves on an abelian surface. We also discuss a link of this problem with Hilbert schemes of points.

On the algebras of BPS states

We define an algebra on the space of BPS states in theories with extended supersymmetry. We show that the algebra of perturbative BPS states in toroidal compactification of the heterotic string is closely related to a generalized Kac-Moody algebra. We use D-brane theory to compare the formulation of RR-charged BPS algebras in type II compactification with the requirements of string/string duality and find that the RR charged BPS states should be regarded as cohomology classes on moduli spaces of coherent sheaves. The equivalence of the algebra of BPS states in heterotic/IIA dual pairs elucidates certain results and conjectures of Nakajima and Gritsenko & Nikulin, on geometrically defined algebras and furthermore suggests nontrivial generalizations of these algebras. In particular, to any Calabi-Yau 3-fold there are two canonically associated algebras exchanged by mirror symmetry.

Special Kahler Manifolds

We give an intrinsic definition of the special geometry which arises in global N=2 supersymmetry in four dimensions. The base of an algebraic integrable system exhibits this geometry, and with an integrality hypothesis any special Kahler manifold is so related to an integrable system. The cotangent bundle of a special Kahler manifold carries a hyperkahler metric. We also define special geometry in supergravity in terms of the special geometry in global supersymmetry.

A lecture on Arithmetic Mirror Symmetry and Calabi-Yau manifolds

We extend our variant of mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces \cite{GN3} and clarify its relation with mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau manifolds. We introduce two classes (for the models A and B) of Calabi-Yau manifolds fibrated by K3 surfaces with some special Picard lattices. These two classes are related with automorphic forms on IV type domains which we studied in our papers \cite{GN1}-\cite{GN6}. Conjecturally these automorphic forms take part in the quantum intersection pairing for model A, Yukawa coupling for model B and mirror symmetry between these two classes of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Recently there were several papers by physicists where it was shown on some examples. We propose a problem of classification of introduced Calabi-Yau manifolds. Our papers \cite{GN1}-\cite{GN6} and \cite{N3}-\cite{N14} give a hope that this is possible. They describe possible Picard or transcendental lattices of general K3 fibers of the Calabi-Yau manifolds.

Automorphic forms with singularities on Grassmannians

We construct some families of automorphic forms on Grassmannians which have singularities along smaller sub Grassmannians, using Harvey and Moore's extension of the Howe (or theta) correspondence to modular forms with poles at cusps. Some of the applications are as follows. We construct families of holomorphic automorphic forms which can be written as infinite products, which give many new examples of generalized Kac-Moody superalgebras. We extend the Shimura and Maass-Gritsenko correspondences to modular forms with singularities. We prove some congruences satisfied by the theta functions of positive definite lattices, and find a sufficient condition for a Lorentzian lattice to have a reflection group with a finite volume fundamental domain. We give some examples suggesting that these automorphic forms with singularities are related to Donaldson polynomials and to mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces.

Plane curves of minimal degree with prescribed singularities

We prove that there exists a>0 such that for any integer d>2 and any topological types S_1,...,S_n of plane curve singularities, satisfying $μ(S_1)+...+μ(S_n) \leq ad^2$, there exists a reduced irreducible plane curve of degree d with exactly n singular points of types S_1,...,S_n, respectively. This estimate is optimal with respect to the exponent of d. In particular, we prove that for any topological type S there exists an irreducible polynomial of degree $d \leq 14\sqrt{μ(S)}$ having a singular point of type S.

Holomorphic Curves and Toda Systems

Geometry of holomorphic curves from point of view of open Toda systems is discussed. Parametrization of curves related this way to non-exceptional simple Lie algebras is given. This gives rise to explicit formulas for minimal surfaces in real, complex and quaternionic projective spaces or complex quadrics. The paper generalizes the well known connection between minimal surfaces in $\EE^{3}$, their Weierstrass representation in terms of holomorphic functions and the general solution to the Liouville equation.

A blow-up construction and graph coloring

Given a graph G (or more generally a matroid embedded in a projective space), we construct a sequence of varieties whose geometry encodes combinatorial information about G. For example, the chromatic polynomial of G (giving at each m>0 the number of colorings of G with m colors, such that no adjacent vertices are assigned the same color) can be computed as an intersection product between certain classes on these varieties, and other information such as Crapo's invariant find a very natural geometric counterpart. The note presents this construction, and gives `geometric' proofs of a number of standard combinatorial results on the chromatic polynomial.

Chiral Rings Do Not Suffice: N=(2,2) Theories with Nonzero Fundamental Group

The Kahler moduli space of a particular non-simply-connected Calabi-Yau manifold is mapped out using mirror symmetry. It is found that, for the model considered, the chiral ring may be identical for different associated conformal field theories. This ambiguity is explained in terms of both A-model and B-model language. It also provides an apparent counterexample to the global Torelli problem for Calabi-Yau threefolds.

Nonperturbative 2D Gravity, Punctured Spheres and $Θ$-Vacua in String Theories

We consider a model of 2D gravity with the coefficient of the Einstein-Hilbert action having an imaginary part $π/2$. This is equivalent to introduce a $Θ$-vacuum structure in the genus expansion whose effect is to convert the expansion into a series of alternating signs, presumably Borel summable. We show that the specific heat of the model has a physical behaviour. It can be represented nonperturbatively as a series in terms of integrals over moduli spaces of punctured spheres and the sum of the series can be rewritten as a unique integral over a suitable moduli space of infinitely punctured spheres. This is an explicit realization à la Friedan-Shenker of 2D quantum gravity. We conjecture that the expansion in terms of punctures and the genus expansion can be derived using the Duistermaat-Heckman theorem. We briefly analyze expansions in terms of punctured spheres also for multicritical models.

Universal Teichmüller space in geometry and physics

Lipman Bers' universal Teichmüller space, classically denoted by $T(1)$, plays a significant role in Teichmüller theory, because all the Teichmüller spaces $T(G)$ of Fuchsian groups $G$ can be embedded into it as complex submanifolds. Recently, $T(1)$ has also become an object of intensive study in physics, because it is a promising geometric environment for a non-perturbative version of bosonic string theory. We provide a non-technical survey of what is currently known about the geometry of $T(1)$ and what is conjectured about its physical meaning.

Super Elliptic Curves

A detailed study is made of super elliptic curves, namely super Riemann surfaces of genus one considered as algebraic varieties, particularly their relation with their Picard groups. This is the simplest setting in which to study the geometric consequences of the fact that certain cohomology groups of super Riemann surfaces are not freely generated modules. The divisor theory of Rosly, Schwarz, and Voronov gives a map from a supertorus to its Picard group, but this map is a projection, not an isomorphism as it is for ordinary tori. The geometric realization of the addition law on Pic via intersections of the supertorus with superlines in projective space is described. The isomorphisms of Pic with the Jacobian and the divisor class group are verified. All possible isogenies, or surjective holomorphic maps between supertori, are determined and shown to induce homomorphisms of the Picard groups. Finally, the solutions to the new super Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (super KP) hierarchy of Mulase-Rabin which arise from super elliptic curves via the Krichever construction are exhibited.

Operator Formalism on General Algebraic Curves

The usual Laurent expansion of the analytic tensors on the complex plane is generalized to any closed and orientable Riemann surface represented as an affine algebraic curve. As an application, the operator formalism for the $b-c$ systems is developed. The physical states are expressed by means of creation and annihilation operators as in the complex plane and the correlation functions are evaluated starting from simple normal ordering rules. The Hilbert space of the theory exhibits an interesting internal structure, being splitted into $n$ ($n$ is the number of branches of the curve) independent Hilbert spaces. Exploiting the operator formalism a large collection of explicit formulas of string theory is derived.

Holomorphic Anomalies in Topological Field Theories

We study the stringy genus one partition function of $N=2$ SCFT's. It is shown how to compute this using an anomaly in decoupling of BRST trivial states from the partition function. A particular limit of this partition function yields the partition function of topological theory coupled to topological gravity. As an application we compute the number of holomorphic elliptic curves over certain Calabi-Yau manifolds including the quintic threefold. This may be viewed as the first application of mirror symmetry at the string quantum level.
