Precision $\bar ν_e$-electron Scattering Measurements with IsoDAR to Search for New Physics

IsoDAR provides a pure and intense $\bar ν_e$ source with an average energy of 6.5 MeV produced through $^8$Li $β$-decay. This source can be paired with a large scintillator detector, such as KamLAND, to produce a sample of $\bar ν_e$-electron scatters that is more than five times larger than what has been collected before. Such a sample would allow for a 3.2% measurement of $\sin^2θ_W$ and a sensitive search for non-standard interactions.

Beam-spin asymmetries from semi-inclusive pion electroproduction

We have measured the moment $A_{LU}^{\sinϕ}$ corresponding to the polarized electron beam-spin asymmetry in SIDIS. $A_{LU}^{\sinϕ}$ is a twist-3 quantity providing information about quark-gluon correlations. Data were taken with the CLAS Spectrometer at Jefferson Lab using a 5.498 GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam and an unpolarized liquid hydrogen target. All three pion channels ($π^+$, $π^0$ and $π^-$) were measured simultaneously over a large range of kinematics within the virtuality range $Q^2 \approx$ 1.0-4.5 GeV$^2$. The observable was measured with better than 1% statistical precision over a large range of $z$, $P_T$, $x_B$, and $Q^{2}$, which permits comparison with several reaction models. The discussed measurements provide an upgrade in statistics over previous measurements, and serve as the first evidence for the negative sign of the $π^{-}$ $\sinϕ$ moment.

$γ^\ast N \to N(1710)$ transition at high momentum transfer

In a relativistic quark model we study the structure of the $N(1710)$ resonance, and the $γ^\ast N \to N(1710)$ reaction focusing on the high momentum transfer region, where the valence quark degrees of freedom are expected to be dominant. The $N(1710)$ resonance, a state with spin 1/2 and positive parity ($J^P = \frac{1}{2}^+$), can possibly be interpreted as the second radial excitation of the nucleon, after the Roper, $N(1440)$. We calculate the $γ^\ast N \to N(1710)$ helicity amplitudes, and predict that they are almost identical to those of the $γ^\ast N \to N(1440)$ reaction in the high momentum transfer region. Thus, future measurement of the helicity amplitudes for the $γ^\ast N \to N(1710)$ reaction can give a significant hint on the internal structure of the $N(1710)$ state.

QCD Evolution of the Sivers Asymmetry

We study the QCD evolution of the Sivers effect in both semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and Drell-Yan production (DY). We pay close attention to the non-perturbative spin-independent Sudakov factor in the evolution formalism and find a universal form which can describe reasonably well the experimental data on the transverse momentum distributions in SIDIS, DY lepton pair and $W/Z$ production. With this Sudakov factor at hand, we perform a global fitting of all the experimental data on the Sivers asymmetry in SIDIS from HERMES, COMPASS and Jefferson Lab. We then make predictions for the Sivers asymmetry in DY lepton pair and $W$ production that can be compared to the future experimental measurements to test the sign change of the Sivers functions between SIDIS and DY processes and constrain the sea quark Sivers functions.

BBN And The CMB Constrain Light, Electromagnetically Coupled WIMPs

(Abridged) In the presence of a light WIMP (< 30 MeV), there are degeneracies among the nature of the WIMP, its couplings to standard model particles, its mass m_chi, and the number of equivalent neutrinos beyond the standard model, Delta N_nu. These degeneracies cannot be broken by the CMB constraint on the effective number of neutrinos, N_eff. However, big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) is affected by a light WIMP and equivalent neutrinos, so the combination of BBN and CMB can break some of the degeneracies. Here, BBN predictions for abundances in the presence of a light WIMP and equivalent neutrinos are explored, and estimates of their observationally determined relic abundances are used to limit m_chi, Delta N_nu, and the present Universe baryon density (Omega_B h^2). These constraints are explored for Majorana and Dirac fermion WIMPs, as well as for real and complex scalar WIMPs that couple to electrons, positrons, and photons. In a separate paper this analysis is repeated for WIMPs that couple only to the standard model neutrinos, and constraints for the two cases are contrasted. Without a light WIMP but allowing for equivalent neutrinos, the combined BBN and CMB constraints favor N_eff = 3.46 +/- 0.17, Omega_B h^2 = 0.0224 +/- 0.0003, and Delta N_nu = 0.40 +/- 0.17. In this case, standard BBN (Delta N_nu = 0) is disfavored at ~98% confidence, and the presence of one sterile neutrino (Delta N_nu = 1) is disfavored at > 99% confidence. Allowing a light WIMP and Delta N_nu equivalent neutrinos together, the combined BBN and CMB data provide lower limits to the WIMP masses (> 0.5 - 5 MeV) that depend on the nature of the WIMP, favor m_chi ~8 MeV slightly over no WIMP, and loosen constraints on equivalent neutrinos, Delta N_nu = 0.65+0.46-0.35. While Delta N_nu = 0 is still disfavored at ~95% confidence with a light WIMP, Delta N_nu = 1 is now allowed.

An operator definition and derivation of collisional energy and momentum loss in relativistic plasmas

We present an operator definition of the collisional energy and momentum loss suffered by an energetic charged particle in the presence of a medium. Our approach uses the energy-momentum tensor of the medium to evaluate the energy and momentum transfer rates. We apply this formalism to an energetic lepton or quark propagating in thermal electron-positron or quark-gluon plasmas, respectively. By using two different approaches to describe the energetic charged particle, an external current approach and a diagrammatic approach, we show explicitly that the operator method reproduces the known results for collisional energy loss from the scattering rate formalism. We further use our results to evaluate the collisional energy and momentum loss for the cases of heavy quark propagation through a quark-gluon plasma and energetic muon propagation in an electron-positron plasma produced in a high-intensity laser field.

Search for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay of $^{100}$Mo with the NEMO-3 Detector

We report the results of a search for the neutrinoless double-$β$ decay (0$νββ$) of $^{100}$Mo, using the NEMO-3 detector to reconstruct the full topology of the final state events. With an exposure of 34.7 kg.y, no evidence for the 0$νββ$ signal has been found, yielding a limit for the light Majorana neutrino mass mechanism of $T_{1/2}(0νββ)>1.1 \times 10^{24}$ years (90% C.L.) once both statistical and systematic uncertainties are taken into account. Depending on the Nuclear Matrix Elements this corresponds to an upper limit on the Majorana effective neutrino mass of $< m_ν > < 0.3-0.9$ eV (90% C.L.). Constraints on other lepton number violating mechanisms of 0$νββ$ decays are also given. Searching for high-energy double electron events in all suitable sources of the detector, no event in the energy region [3.2-10] MeV is observed for an exposure of 47 kg.y.

Measurement of the resonant and CP components in $\overline{B}^0\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-$ decays

The resonant structure of the reaction $\overline{B}^0\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-$ is studied using data from 3 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected by the LHCb experiment, one-third at 7 Tev center-of-mass energy and the remainder at 8 Tev. The invariant mass of the $π^+π^-$ pair and three decay angular distributions are used to determine the fractions of the resonant and non-resonant components. Six interfering $π^+π^-$ states: $ρ(770)$, $f_0(500)$, $f_2(1270)$, $ρ(1450)$, $ω(782)$ and $ρ(1700)$ are required to give a good description of invariant mass spectra and decay angular distributions. The positive and negative CP fractions of each of the resonant final states are determined. The $f_0(980)$ meson is not seen and the upper limit on its presence, compared with the observed $f_0(500)$ rate, is inconsistent with a model of tetraquark substructure for these scalar mesons at the eight standard deviation level. In the $q\overline{q}$ model, the absolute value of the mixing angle between the $f_0(980)$ and the $f_0(500)$ scalar mesons is limited to be less than $17^{\circ}$ at 90% confidence level.

The detection of back-to-back proton pairs in Charged-Current neutrino interactions with the ArgoNeuT detector in the NuMI low energy beam line

Short range nucleon-nucleon correlations in nuclei (NN SRC) carry important information on nuclear structure and dynamics. NN SRC have been extensively probed through two-nucleon knock- out reactions in both pion and electron scattering experiments. We report here on the detection of two-nucleon knock-out events from neutrino interactions and discuss their topological features as possibly involving NN SRC content in the target argon nuclei. The ArgoNeuT detector in the Main Injector neutrino beam at Fermilab has recorded a sample of 30 fully reconstructed charged current events where the leading muon is accompanied by a pair of protons at the interaction vertex, 19 of which have both protons above the Fermi momentum of the Ar nucleus. Out of these 19 events, four are found with the two protons in a strictly back-to-back high momenta configuration directly observed in the final state and can be associated to nucleon Resonance pionless mechanisms involving a pre-existing short range correlated np pair in the nucleus. Another fraction (four events) of the remaining 15 events have a reconstructed back-to-back configuration of a np pair in the initial state, a signature compatible with one-body Quasi Elastic interaction on a neutron in a SRC pair. The detection of these two subsamples of the collected (mu- + 2p) events suggests that mechanisms directly involving nucleon-nucleon SRC pairs in the nucleus are active and can be efficiently explored in neutrino-argon interactions with the LAr TPC technology.

High precision determination of the $Q^2$-evolution of the Bjorken Sum

We present a significantly improved determination of the Bjorken Sum for 0.6$\leq Q^{2}\leq$4.8 GeV$^{2}$ using precise new $g_{1}^{p}$ and $g_{1}^{d}$ data taken with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. A higher-twist analysis of the $Q^{2}$-dependence of the Bjorken Sum yields the twist-4 coefficient $f_{2}^{p-n}=-0.064 \pm0.009\pm_{0.036}^{0.032}$. This leads to the color polarizabilities $χ_{E}^{p-n}=-0.032\pm0.024$ and $χ_{B}^{p-n}=0.032\pm0.013$. The strong force coupling is determined to be $α_{s}^{\overline{\mbox{ MS}}}(M_{Z}^{2})=0.1124\pm0.0061$, which has an uncertainty a factor of 1.5 smaller than earlier estimates using polarized DIS data. This improvement makes the comparison between $α_{s}$ extracted from polarized DIS and other techniques a valuable test of QCD.

Pion-assisted charmed dibaryon candidate

The Lambda_c(2286)-N system is studied in a chiral constituent quark model and the resulting s-wave interaction is used in separable form within three-body models of the pi-Lambda_c-N system with quantum numbers (C,I,JP)=(+1,3/2,2+). Separable interactions are also used for the dominant p-wave pion-baryon channels dominated by the Delta(1232) and Sigma_c(2520) resonances. Faddeev equations with relativistic kinematics are solved on the real axis to search for bound states and in the complex plane to search for three-body resonances. Some of the models considered generate a very narrow bound state, requiring isospin violation for its strong decay. Other models lead to a narrow resonance (Gamma < 0.4 MeV) for resonance mass below the Sigma_c(2455)-N threshold. This would be the lowest-lying C=+1 dibaryon, with mass estimated approximately as 3370+/-15 MeV.

Diphoton production in high-energy p+A collisions

We consider semi-inclusive diphoton+jet and inclusive diphoton production in high-energy proton-nucleus collisions, treating the target nucleus as a Color-Glass-Condensate and the projectile proton in the parton model. We obtain the prompt diphoton production cross-section in terms of fragmentation and direct contributions. The fragmentation part is given in terms of single-photon and double-photon fragmentation functions. We study prompt, direct and fragmentation diphoton correlations in p+p and p+A collisions at the LHC, and show that at low values of transverse momenta of the produced photon pair, these correlations are sensitive to saturation effects. We show that back-to-back (de)-correlations in prompt diphoton production are stronger in fragmentation part than in the direct one.

The 1-Jettiness DIS event shape: NNLL + NLO results

We present results for the complete NNLL+NLO (~ α_s) 1-jettiness (τ_1) event shape distribution for single jet (J) production in electron-nucleus (N_A) collisions e^- + N_A \to e^- + J + X, in the deep inelastic scattering (DIS) region where the hard scale is set by the jet transverse momentum P_{J_T}. These results cover the entire τ_1-spectrum including the resummation (τ_1<<P_{J_T}) and fixed-order (τ_1~ P_{J_T}) perturbative QCD regions. They incorporate non-perturbative soft radiation effects, the anti-k_T jet algorithm in the fixed-order calculation, and a smooth matching between the resummation and fixed-order perturbative QCD regions. The matching smoothly connects the spectrum in the resummation region, which can be computed without reference to an external jet algorithm, and the fixed-order region where an explicit jet algorithm must be specified. Our code, used for generating the numerical results, is flexible enough to incorporate different jet algorithms for the fixed-order calculation. We also perform a jet shape analysis, defined within the 1-jettiness framework, which allows one to control the amount of radiation included in the definition of the final state jet. This formalism can allow for detailed studies of jet energy-loss mechanisms and nuclear medium effects. The analysis presented here can be used for precision studies of QCD and as a probe of nuclear dynamics using data collected at HERA and in proposed future electron-ion colliders such as the EIC and the LHeC.

Pion TMDs in light-front constituent approach, and Boer-Mulders effect in the pion-induced Drell-Yan process

At leading twist the transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions of the pion consist of two functions, the unpolarized $f_{1,π}(x,\boldsymbol k^{\, 2}_\perp)$ and the Boer-Mulders function $h_{1,π}^{\perp}(x,\boldsymbol k^{\, 2}_\perp)$. We study both functions within a light-front constituent model of the pion, comparing the results with different pion models and the corresponding nucleon distributions from a light-front constituent model. After evolution from the model scale to the relevant experimental scales, the results for the collinear pion valence parton distribution function $f_{1,π}(x)$ are in very good agreement with available parameterizations. Using the light-front constituent model results for the Boer-Mulders functions of the pion and nucleon, we calculate the coefficient $ν$ in the angular distribution of Drell-Yan dileptons produced in pion-nucleus scattering, which is responsible for the violation of the Lam-Tung relation. We find a good agreement with data, and carefully discuss the range of applicability of our approach.

Distinguishing axions from generic light scalars using EDM and fifth-force experiments

We derive electric dipole moment (EDM) constraints on possible new macroscopic time reversal and parity violating (TVPV) spin-dependent forces. These constraints are compared to those derived from direct searches in fifth-force experiments and from combining laboratory searches with astrophysical bounds on stellar energy loss. For axion-mediated TVPV spin-dependent forces, EDM constraints dominate over fifth-force limits by several orders of magnitude. However, we show that for a generic light scalar, unrelated to the strong CP problem, present bounds from direct fifth- force searches are more stringent than those inferred from EDM limits, for the interaction ranges explored by fifth-force experiments. Thus, correlating observations in EDM and fifth-force experiments could help distinguish axions from more generic light scalar scenarios.

Quark stars under strong magnetic fields

Within the confined isospin- and density-dependent mass model, we study the properties of strange quark matter (SQM) and quark stars (QSs) under strong magnetic fields. The equation of state of SQM under a constant magnetic field is obtained self-consistently and the pressure perpendicular to the magnetic field is shown to be larger than that parallel to the magnetic field, implying that the properties of magnetized QSs generally depend on both the strength and the orientation of the magnetic fields distributed inside the stars. Using a density-dependent magnetic field profile which is introduced to mimic the magnetic field strength distribution in a star, we study the properties of static spherical QSs by assuming two extreme cases for the magnetic field orientation in the stars, i.e., the radial orientation in which the local magnetic fields are along the radial direction and the transverse orientation in which the local magnetic fields are randomly oriented but perpendicular to the radial direction. Our results indicate that including the magnetic fields with radial (transverse) orientation can significantly decrease (increase) the maximum mass of QSs, demonstrating the importance of the magnetic field orientation inside the magnetized compact stars.

Transverse polarization of $Λ$ hyperons from quasireal photoproduction on nuclei

The transverse polarization of $Λ$ hyperons was measured in inclusive quasireal photoproduction for various target nuclei ranging from hydrogen to xenon. The data were obtained by the HERMES experiment at HERA using the 27.6 GeV lepton beam and nuclear gas targets internal to the lepton storage ring. The polarization observed is positive for light target nuclei and is compatible with zero for krypton and xenon.
